Greene’s fiction must be divided into two groups: on the one hand there are the crime and spy
books mainly written for entertainment (i.e. his early novels), and on the other the novels from
1938 onwards, where the same subject matter is presented on a higher level of moral seriousness.
What has always fascinated Greene’s readers are the exotic settings of his books: Mexico, Haiti,
