Located in the east of Paris, where the arts have flourished in recent years on account of such sophisticated venues as Le Plateau, Galerie Jocelyn Wolff, Galerie Maisonneuve and Cosmic Gallery café au lit showcases current artwork in a contemporary-designed studio apartment. café au lit is an apartment for rent, situated in the charming and quiet quartier Mouzaïa. Exhibitions of young contemporary artists’ work, mostly in situ-works, rotate roughly every five months in the café au lit gallery/apartment. During openings and closings, café au lit becomes a public space. Afterwards, and for the duration of the exhibition, only apartment guests have the pleasure of living – like a collector – in an intimate tête à tête with the artwork. Accommodations at café au lit can be booked from one week to several months. Art-minded travelers such as gallerists, curators, museum directors, artists and art-lovers are particularly encouraged to enquire. Whether you are in Paris for the International Photo Salon "Paris Photo," the Paris International Contemporary Art Fair (FIAC), or in preparation for an exhibition — café au lit offers a place where you can meet with professional colleagues and lodge comfortably within close range of central Paris. café au lit is the brainchild of Andrea Weisbrod and Jens E. Sennewald, who initially tried the idea of renting an "art space" with a guest room in their private apartment. Both work as freelance publicists and art critics for german language publications. In addition to her painted canvasses, Basch creates cut paper pieces and wall drawings that expand the gallery into an exuberant, imaginative space. A colourful imagination covering notably her recents works in oil on canvas or a newly added series of gouaches. While Basch's work may appear as permeated with peaceful memories as a lace-edged handkerchief, something dark and ambivalent lurks behind the promise of happiness, enticing the viewer down a winding path. Numerous exhibitions and exhibition involvement in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Israel, and Italy. Awards, academic appointments, and grants – most recently a residency at Villa Massimo awarded by the Deutsche Akademie Rom in 2005 and a foreign exchange fellowship to Istanbul from the Berlin state senate in 2004. "Basch associates her own vocabulary of the remembered with the elements of her surroundings, dissolving the accustomed relation little by little into an infinite ornamental loop. The individual elements remain nonetheless recognizable because Gabriele Basch doesn't wish to part with their meaning; [...] Gabriele Basch establishes a link between collective history and personal memories, both of which, for her, Gabriele Basch sitting by one of her paper cut-outs inevitably belong together as the basis for distrusting the things around us. Now what was that again – a world at peace?"
