Science without borders:
Alumni reunion in São Paulo
Farewell to barbara and Daniel
„Oscar“ der Fachliteratur geht
an Prof. Andrzej Górak
the “Oscars” of academic
publishing go to Prof. Górak
Jane Kniffka, our colleague from TU Dortmund’s International Office, had the opportunity to meet with
three generations of “Science without Borders”Alumni from the São Paulo area! Together, they
reminisced about their study abroad experience at
TU Dortmund University and were excited to share
their individual Dortmund memories.
As we joined the TU Dortmund Alumni Team, we
were eager to learn and excited to help shape a
growing international network. For the past two and
half (Barbara)/ four (Daniel) years we have been
lucky enough to gain a wealth of knowledge, be part
of a great team and gain a network of international
support. It is for all these reasons that our decision
to leave the International Alumni Team is so bitter
sweet.
Prof. Andrzej Górak von der Fakultät Bio- und Chemieingenieurwesen (BCI) ist als Herausgeber des
dreibändigen Fachbuchs „Distillation“ der PROSE
Award in der Kategorie Chemie&Physik verliehen
worden. Die Bücher werden vom renommierten
internationalen Verlag Elsevier gedruckt.
der „Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division”,
der Vereinigung Amerikanischer Verlage.
Professor Andrzej Górak from the Biochemical Engineering Faculty at TU Dortmund University was awarded the PROSE Award for the chemistry and physics
category for his textbook, “Distillation”. The book was
recently released by the world renowned Elsevier
publishing company. Each year, PROSE Awards are
given to the top textbook authors in diverse subject
areas. PROSE Awards are known as the “Oscars” of
academic publishing and are the highest distinction that can be achieved amongst textbook writers.
Since 1976 the “Professinal and Scholarly publishing
Division” has been granting PROSE Awards in connection with American publishing companies.
TU Dortmund University’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Ursula
Gather, was one of the first to be able to congratulate
Professor Andrzej Górak, as she said, “I am so honored that Dr. Górak was recognized for his decades of
successful research. We are proud to have him as a
professor and researcher at TU Dortmund University.”
After studying one year in Dortmund within the
“Science without Borders” program, a scholarship
by the Brazilian government for students in natural
and technical sciences, the Brazilian students are
now about to finish their Bachelor programs at their
universities back in Brazil. Talking about exams and
recent career opportunities with Jane Kniffka, who
is also the Program Coordinator at TU Dortmund
University, the students agreed that their studies at
TU Dortmund University and the numerous experiences they gathered during their stay abroad
influenced their ideas for their careers strongly.
While some students plan to subscribe for a Master
program at a Brazilian university, others will start a
career in a branch of a German company in Brazil.
The alumni reunion took place in the context of Jane
Kniffka’s visit to the UA Ruhr Liaison Office in Brazil
and the participation in the “EuroPós” study fair
for Brazilian students and graduates in São Paulo.
“The reunion was a magnificent opportunity that
really strengthened and developed the bond with
the Alumni”, says Jane. “We are glad to have new
and dedicated TU Dortmund University alumni in
Brazil. Obrigada - Thank you for the warm welcome
in Brazil!”

The TU Dortmund International Alumni Network has
gradually grown into a web of support, friendship
and cultural exchange. We are grateful to have been
able to be part of this growth and are even more
grateful to know that we will forever be a part of
such an international web of individuals. We look
forward to further being actively involved in the
alumni network and glad that we will be able to stay
informed via the Facebook page and through the
newsletter!
We would like to thank all of the incredible people
that we were lucky enough to work with throughout
our time in the International Office, especially my direct “teammates” Anna-Julia Toll, Jane Kniffka and
Julia Pehle.
Dear Barbara and Daniel, thank you for your passion
and effort for the international alumni! We will miss
you and will keep in touch via our network!

Since the early 1970s the detective-crime series Tatort has been a German Sunday night tradition. Each
week the series focuses one of twenty-one detective
teams based in different German, Austrian or Swiss
cities. The German based series also follows the personal and professional lives of the diverse detective
teams as they solve topical crime cases.
The new ZDF series “Dr.Klein” (Dr.Little) follows a
senior physician who is professional and a little
person. The series has inspired the formation of a
new research group at TU Dortmund University that
is looking into the series’ influence on the elimination of stereotypes, especially those about physical
handicaps.
TU Dortmund University and Ruhr University Bochum
will collaborate to offer future master students a one
of a kind learning experience. The Medical Physics
degree will be split between the two universities.
The crime series is the longest-running German
language television series and attracts viewers of all
ages. The show’s original writer Gunther Witte strove
to create a crime series that conveyed characters and
cases that were realistic and conceivable within German society. The Sunday night classic is still based on
these principals.
As the head doctor of a children’s hospital, Christine
Urspruch portrays the life of a typical professional
who has to balance her family and career. Her small
stature is presented as an advantage in her daily life,
as she is really on one level with her patients. “That is
the magic of the story”, commented the show’s editor
on a recent visit to TU Dortmund University along
with the show’s head author Torsten Lenkeit. The two
ZDF employees both noted that Dr.Klein’s physical
handicap should not be the show’s focus but rather
an integrated part of her character.
The UA Ruhr is an alliance between Ruhr University
Bochum, TU Dortmund University, and the University
of Duisburg-Essen, the three strongest universities
in Germany’s thriving Ruhr Area. The Ruhr Area is
not only Germany’s largest academic hub, but also
an epicenter of innovation that fosters close interaction between academia and the private sector. It
also provides students and researchers from around
the world with an open gateway to our region.
In 2012, the Dortmund Tatort had its premier. The
four-person detective team is unique, entertaining
and symbolic for the diversity that makes Dortmund
special. Dortmund has been featured four times since
its premier and each case has shown Dortmund from
a unique angle.
Tatort airs nearly every Sunday night of the year, yet
every now and again its 8:15 pm time slot is reserved
for “Polizieruf” a comparable detective series that
stems from the GDR. We encourage you to tune in
and watch Tatort Sunday nights or to watch it online
through the ARD streaming service!
The research at TU Dortmund University will be done
over an extended time period to give viewers a chance to better connect to the show’s leading character.
However, the research team hopes to have initial
results as soon as late March which can then be
used to help the producers with the show’s second
season. The ZDF production team is positive about
TU Dortmund University’s data collection which
should provide them detailed, practical and current
feedback from the show’s viewers.

TU Dortmund University’s Faculty of Physics and
Ruhr University Bochum’s Faculty for Astronomy will
guide students through courses as well as research.
Physics majors will now have the opportunity to
focus their master’s studies in the medical field with
the goal to improve the medical treatments available
to patients.
The collaborative endeavor enhances the research
opportunities available to students. With two full
university research departments, the research specialization options are expansive. Medical physics
covers areas of biophysics, neuroinformatics, plasma
medicine and so much more. The DGMP (The German
Medical Physics Community) has emphasized the
need for such programs to help fill gaps especially in
the many areas of medical physics research.
You can find more information about the study program on these websites:

The UA Ruhr universities cooperate with other
universities and research institutions worldwide
and are active in numerous international networks.
In order to support international exchange, UA Ruhr
has established liaison offices abroad and operates
offices in New York, Moscow, and Rio de Janeiro/São
Paulo.
These offices also work to establish new research
contacts and provide organizational support for
various academic projects. Furthermore, they have
initiated many exchange and scholarship programs,
as well as research agreements, and therefore
provide a valuable contribution to the international
orientation of the Ruhr Area. For example, through
the work of these offices, the UA Ruhr universities
have become hosts to top students from the United States as well as the largest group nationwide
of Brazilian exchange students as part of the CsF
scholarship program.
