Armand Angster (clarinet, bassclarinet, contrabassclarinet)
Born in 1947 in Strasbourg. His repertoire as a soloist comprises the music of Mozart as well as modern
and contemporary music of the 20th and 21st century, Jazz and Improvised Music. Many composers
dedicated him their works, including Pascal Dusapin, Georges Aperghis, Franco Donatoni, James
Dillon, and François Bernard Mâche. He is lecturing at the Strasbourg Music Conservatory
(clarinet and chamber music) since many years.
With Françoise Kubler (soprano) he co-founded the renowned Ensemble Accroche Note, playing a
wide range of notated music: modern and contemporary vocal- and instrumental music from the
Vienna School to Mauricio Kagel, Stravinsky, Dallapiccola, Boulez and Berio as well as Jazz,
Improvised Music and music theatre pieces. They performed with Accroche Note at all leading
international festivals. He is a much in demand soloist with Music Project (London), L’Orchestre
Philharmonique de Radio France, Niew Ensemble (Amsterdam), Ensemble Recherche, Carme Di
Milano, Ensemble Alternance (Paris), Ensemble de l´Itinéraire and SWF-Orchester Baden Baden.
He is a member of L’aventure de Passagio (feat. Jean Paul Céléa, François Couturier, Wolfgang Reisinger
and Françoise Kubler) and often collaborates with Jazz musicians and Improvisers such as Barre Philips,
Paul Lovens, Pascal Contet, Carlo Rizzo, Eric Watson, Wolfgang Fuchs, et al.

Jean-Marc Foltz (clarinet, bassclarinet)
Born in 1968 in Strasbourg. Since his graduation at CNR/Conservatoire Strasbourg where he studied
clarinet with Armand Angster he became an active member of the contemporary and improvised music
scene. He plays Jazz in duo and trio with Stéphan Oliva (p) and Bruno Chevillon (b) as well as with
Raymond Boni, Joe Mac Phee, Claude Tchamitchian and Latif Chaarani. He is a member of Bernard Struber´s
Jazztet, of quintet Improvista, of Claude Tchamitchian´s Lousadzak, a.o. Jean-Marc Foltz is also a much
in demand interpeter of contemporary music (Aperghis, Boulez, Dusapin) and frequently collaborates with
Ensemble Accroche Note, Musikfabrik Düsseldorf, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble United
Instruments of Lucillin (Luxemburg) and Alternance (Paris). He performs with eminent musicians
of the European Jazz and Improvising scene, but also as soloist. Jean-Marc Foltz has contributed to USpianist Bill Carrothers´Project ´Armistice 1918´ and founded in 2005 his own trio featuring bassist
Sébastien Boisseau and drummer Christophe Marguet which has received wide critical acclaim. Jean-Marc
Foltz is represented on fourteen CD´s, six of them with contemporary music (Pascal Dusapin, Accroche
Notes, Ensemble Intercontemporain...) and on eight CD´s als sideman (Bill Carrothers, Stephan Oliva,
Bernard Struber...). Presently he serves as teacher at the CNR (clarinet, collective improivsation).
Sylvain Kassap (clarinets, saxophones, composition, arrangements)
Born in 1956, studied musicology and graduated in 1977. Since 1978 he has been playing in trio with John
Surman, Barre Phillips and Stu Martin, with Sam Rivers, Evan Parker, Louis Sclavis, Han Bennink,
Dominique Pifarely, Günter Baby Sommer, Gianluigi Trovesi, Steve Lacy, Lol Coxhill, Aldo Romano, Okay
Temiz, Phil Minton, Claude Barthélemy, Michel Portal, Bernard Vitet, Louis Sclavis, Henri Texier, Bernard
Lubat, François Tusques, Yves Robert, Michel Godard, Jacques Bonaffe, Didier Petit, Okay Temiz, François
Corneloup, Helene Breschand, Hélène Labarrière, Christophe Marguet, Didier Levallet, a.o.
As a composer, he is often requested to write music for movie (T´ES HEUREUSE? MOI TOUJOURS...,
VAUDEVILLE, GRAND GUIGNOL, LES PETITS OBJECTS D´AMOUR, NEVAZNI JUNACI, LA VIE SECRET DE
WALTER NIONS), TV, theatre and dance. Aside from jazz and improvisation he played as a soloist or in
different ensembles compositions by John Cage, Mauricio Kagel, Mozart, François Rossé, Karlheinz
Stockhausen, Igor Stravinski, Luc Ferrari, Bernard Cavanna, Luciano Berio, Jacques Rebotier and Toru
Takemitsu. He founded various own ensembles (Molto Mobile; Saxifrages!; a quartet with Jean François
Canape, Hélène Labarrière and Christophe Marguet; a quartet with Petit/Cuisinier/Perraud) and served as
founding member of ´Collectif Zhivaro´(w/ Claude Barthélemy, Didier Levallet, Jacques Mahieux, Gérard
Marais and Henri Texier) and of the ´Collectif Incidences´.
In the 90´s he was commissioned to write several pieces for soloists (harpist Hélène Breschand, tubaplayer François Thuillier, saxophonist Jean Pierre Baraglioli) and for ensembles (Ars Nova,
Alternance, Laborintus, L´Ensemble de trompettes de Paris, Sextuor Baermann).
His comprehensive discography contains releases with Sam Rivers, John Greaves, Claude
Barthélémy, Pierre Bensusan, Ricardo Del Fra, Eddy Louiss, Guesh Patti, Jacques Mahieux, Okay
Temiz, Günter Sommer, Sapho, Anthony Ortega, Ensemble ARS Nova, Ensemble Laborintus, Trio
de clarinettes. More than a dozen CD´s have been additionally released under his name.
