2 free skill level RUFFLE EDGE PILLOW SUPPLIES & TOOLS: • Stonehill Collection Ribbon Dance quilting fabrics: 5/8 yd Pink Tonal Vine 1/2 yd Aqua Floral • 17"x17" muslin • 17"x17" quilt batting • 16" square pillow insert • Sewing machine and basic sewing supplies • Thread • Iron and ironing surface • Optional: rotary cutter, mat and ruler DIRECTIONS: FIG 1 CUTTING: 1. From Pink Tonal Vine cut 3 crosswise strips 421⁄4"x6" for ruffle. 2. From Aqua Floral cut two 17"x17" squares. ASSEMBLY: 1. Sandwich batting between one Aqua Floral square & the muslin square. Quilt as desired for pillow top. FIG 2 2. Stitch ruffle pieces together at ends using 1/4" seam allowance. Press seams open. Fold ruffle in half lengthwise & press. Make rows of gathering stitches 1/4" and 1/2" from the raw edges. (FIG 1) 3. Fold ruffle into quarters with ends of thread at 1 fold. Mark folds along seam allowance with pins. Pull thread at ends and at folds to gather ruffle. (FIG 2) 4. Place ruffle around pillow top adjusting gathers evenly & pin in place. Arrange more fullness at corners. Secure thread ends around pins. Stitch ruffle to pillow top inside inner row of gathering stitches. (FIG 3 & 4) 5. Right sides together, stitch pillow front to back using 1/2" seam allowance leaving an opening on 1 edge. Turn pillow right side out and place insert in pillow. Turn seam allowance to inside and slip-stitch opening closed. Baste cording in place 1/2" from edges. (FIG 5) FLORAL BOLSTER PILLOW SUPPLIES & TOOLS: • Stonehill Collection Ribbon Dance quilting fabrics: 5/8 yd Large Pink Tonal Flower 3/8 yd Pink Packed Dahlias 1/2 yd Aqua Floral • 11⁄4 yd cotton cording • 15"x20" quilt batting • 15"x20" muslin for backing • Thread • 5"x14" bolster pillow insert • Sewing machine and basic sewing supplies • Iron and ironing surface • Pencil and ruler • Very long needle to attach buttons • Optional: rotary cutter, mat and ruler 8. Stitch end pieces to outer side edge of pillow right sides together using 1/2" seam allowance. (FIG 6) FIG 4 9. Fold pillow piece in half, right sides in matching seamlines of strips & end pieces. Stitch 1/2" from edge to make tube shape. Turn right side out. (FIG 7) 10. Place bolster insert inside quilted center of tube. Fold end pieces down over sides turning under edge to cover half of circle. Pin hem. Make row of tiny running stitches along the folded edge. (FIG 8) DIRECTIONS: 11. Gather end pieces over circular ends. Knot thread securely. (FIG 9) CUTTING: 1. From Large Pink Tonal Flowers cut one 7"x20" lengthwise strip centered over flowers. 2. From Pink Packed Dahlias cut two 11⁄4"x20" strips. Measure the amount needed to go around circumference of cording plus 1" seam allowance. Cut 3 bias strips 16" by this measurement. The ends of the bias strips should remain diagonal and on the straight grain. 3. From Aqua Floral cut 2 strips 33⁄4"x20", 2 end pieces 4"x20". 12. Cover 2 buttons with circles of Pink Packed Dahlia fabric following manufacturer’s directions. (FIG 10) 13. Use long needle to sew buttons to center of gathers on end, through bolster. Pull thread tightly to indent buttons slightly. FIG 5 FIG 6 FIG 7 FIG 1 ASSEMBLY: 1. Stitch Pink Packed Dahlia strips to each side of Large Pink Tonal Flower strip right sides together using 1/4" seam allowance. (FIG 1) Fig 2 2. Stitch Aqua Floral strips to sides of Pink Packed Dahlia strips. (FIG 2) 3. Place quilt batting on top of backing fabric. Center pillow piece on batting right side up & pin layers together. 4. Quilt in the ditch along seamlines on pillow. Baste 3/8" from the outer edges of the square. Quilt along outer edges of large flowers. Quilt around center of flower using “stipple” motion. Quilt around flower shapes on the Aqua Floral strips. 5. Stitch bias strips together on straight grain using 1/4" seam allowance. Press seams open. (FIG 3) 6. Fold bias strip in half lengthwise right side out and insert cording inside along fold. Baste along the edge of the cording using a zipper foot. (FIG 4) Fig 8 Fig 9 Fig 10 6. Place quilt batting on top of the backing fabric. Center the pillow top on the batting right side up and pin the layers together. Quilt along seamline between flange & pillow center. Quilt along main lines of paisley, flower& geometric shapes. Baste 3/8" from outer edges of flange. (FIG 6) 8. Place front & back right sides together, stitch 1/2" from outer edge. Clip corners & turn right side out. (FIG 7) 9. Stitch along seamline between pillow & flange. Place pillow insert. (FIG 8) DIRECTIONS: CUTTING: 1. From Pink Main Floral fabric cut one 181⁄2"x181⁄2" square = front, one 18"x181⁄2" = back, one 10"x181⁄2" = back. 2. From Brown Aqua Vine fabric cut eight 243⁄4"x31⁄4" = flange pieces. ASSEMBLY: 1. Trim ends of flange pieces diagonally. (FIG 1) 2. Turn under 1" then 1" again on one 181⁄2" side edge of the pillow back pieces. (FIG 2) FIG 1 FIG 6 FIG 2 RIBBON DANCE PILLOW SUPPLIES AND TOOLS: 3. Overlap the hemmed edge of the larger back over the hemmed edge of smaller piece so back is 181⁄2" wide. Baste pieces together 1/4" from top and bottom edges. (FIG 3) 4. Right sides together, using 1/4" seam allowance, stitch shorter edge of flange piece to each edge of front and back, beginning and ending stitching 1/4" from edge. (FIG 4) Fig 3 5. Fold center diagonally, right sides together & stitch adjacent diagonal ends of flange using 1/4" seam allowance. Fold other diagonal to sew remaining flanges at 2 corners. From Brown Aqua Vine cut one 16"x18" rectangle = pillow back, one 10"x16" rectangle = pillow back, two 163⁄4"x21⁄4" strips = flange pieces, two 203⁄4"x21⁄4" strips = flange pieces. Trim end of flange strips diagonally. 2. Cut one 81⁄2"x3" each: Large Pink Tonal Flower, Aqua Floral, Purple Tonal Dots, Lime Floral, Pink Packed Dahlias, Pink Dots on Yellow, Pink Main Floral &Purple Tonal Vine. From Purple Packed Dahlias and Pink Tonal Vine cut one 41⁄2"x3" rectangle of each. 7. Overlap hemmed edges of larger back over hemmed edge of smaller piece so back is 20" wide. Baste pieces together 1/2" from top & edges. Stitch 2" along edge of hem to top and bottom of edge. (FIG 5) ASSEMBLY: 8. With right sides together, stitch front & back 1/2" from outer edge. Clip corners, turn right side out. (FIG 6) 1. Stitch all seams right sides together using 1/4" seam allowance unless indicated. Stitch rectangles in each row together along short edges. (FIG 1) FIG 1 9. Stitch along seamline between pillow center and flange. (FIG 7) Place pillow insert inside. FIG 5 2. Mark center of side edge of each large rectangle. Pin rows together matching mark to seam line of adjacent row. Use a seam allowance slightly wider than 1/4". Finished piece is 161⁄2"x121⁄2". (FIG 2) FIG 6 FIG 7 FIG 2 3. Stitch short flange strips to the side edges of the pillow center starting and stopping stitching 1/4" from ends. Then stitch the long flange strips to the top and bottom edges of the pillow center in the same manner. Stitch the diagonal edges of adjacent flange pieces together. Fold center with flanges on a diagonal right sides together, line up ends of flange and stitch. (FIG 3) FIG 3 4. Place quilt batting on top of backing fabric. Center pillow top on batting right side up and pin layers. 5. Quilt along seamline between the flange and the pillow center. Quilt along the lines of the patchwork. Baste 3/8" from outer edges of the flange. 6. Turn under 1", then 1" again on 16" side edge of pillow back pieces. Stitch hems along inner edge.
