Curso Internacional de Percussão Este curso é dirigido a todos os percussionistas, músicos em geral e compositores que queiram conhecer, experimentar e especializar-se nas áreas da percussão, em particular nas mais inovadoras e menos comuns nas instituições europeias de ensino. Contemplará formação em gamelão (conjunto de instrumentos da Indonésia) por Andy Channing e Paulo Zé Neto; em percussão digital do Médio Oriente, Sul da Índia, Mundo Mediterrânico Antigo e Moderno (diversos frame drums, bodhrans, tars e bendirs), por Glen Velez; e em improvisação nas percussões de lâminas por Jeffery Davis. Haverá a possibilidade de assistir a ensaios abertos do Drumming–GP e estabelecer contactos com os compositores presentes. O Grupo tem vindo a sintetizar a evolução da percussão erudita em Portugal e na própria cultura ocidental. Sob direcção de Miquel Bernat, percussionista e pedagogo de prestígio internacional, membro fundador do Ictus Ensemble de Bruxelas e colaborador assíduo da Companhia de Dança Contemporânea Rosas de Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Drumming–GP destaca-se pela singularidade da sua programação, que resume as experiências da vida profissional do director, com a variedade e diversidade de estilos e formação dos membros que o compõem, tem vindo a concretizar diversas linhas de apresentação, que vão da música contemporânea ao Rock-Jazz-World Music, à música de cena para teatro, ópera e bailado, passando pela colaboração com outros agrupamentos e solistas, como a Orquestra da Gulbenkian, Orquestra Nacional do Porto, RemixEnsemble, Quarteto Montagnana, Ivan Moniguetti, Maria João, etc. Drumming – Grupo de Percussão mantém sempre a coerência estilística e temática, percorrendo as vias da inovação sonora e da poética do espectáculo enquanto momento cénico único e total. Glen Velez é um mestre percussionista e compositor, galardoado já quatro vezes com um Grammy Award, e visto como um dos mais influentes percussionistas e compositores de world music do seu tempo. Ele é responsável pela crescente popularidade dos frame drums nos Estados Unidos e no resto do mundo e por criar um novo modelo mundial para a performance em percussão. Os seus ensinamentos e apresentações inspiraram a Remo Drum Co. e Cooperman Drum Co. no desenvolvimento de uma linha de frame drums à qual chamaram a Glen Velez Signature Series. Drumming – Percussion Group emerged in Porto in 1999. The group has been synthesising the evolution of erudite percussion music in Portugal and in Western culture. It quickly gained the acceptance of the public and critics, and today it is a reference in the Portuguese musical life, counting in its curriculum dozens of performances in all of the main theatres of the country: Centro Cultural de Belém, Fundação Gulbenkian, Culturgest, Teatro Camões, Teatro Rivoli, Teatro Nacional São João, Fundação de Serralves, etc., as well as performances abroad in Spain, Belgium, France, Germany, Brazil... Resident group for the musical program of Porto European Capital of Culture in 2001, it has been contributing to the divulging of important contemporary pieces and creating its own repertoire motivating dozens of national and international composers to write music especially for the group. These have been exploring various, varied and imaginative ways and forms of expressing percussion, allowing for the progressive reach of diverse audiences within this speciallity. Under the direction of Miquel Bernat, an internationally renowned percussionist and teacher, founding member of the Ictus Ensemble from Brussels, and constant collaborator of Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s Contemporary Dance Group Rosas, Drumming–GP is noted for the singularity of their programs — reflecting the professional experiences of its director and the diversity and variety of styles and training of its members — and presents itself in different lines from Contemporary Music to Rock-Jazz-World Music, Stage Music for theatre, opera and dance, collaborating with other groups and solo players such as the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Porto National Orchestra, Remix-Ensemble, Montagnana Quartet, Ivan Moniguetti, Maria João, etc. Drumming – Percussion Group keeps coherence in terms of style and theme while following the ways of sound innovation and of a poetic of the show as a unique and whole scenic moment. Glen alcançou o reconhecimento internacional enquanto artista solo e é conhecido pelos seus 15 anos de gravações e colaborações com o compositor Steve Reich assim como com o Paul Winter Consort. Até o compositor John Cage, um dos notáveis do séc. XX, reconheceu a mestria de Velez quando compôs uma peça de frame drum especialmente para ele em 1989. Glen escreveu música para teatro e dança e gravou centenas de álbuns na ECM, CBS, RCA, GRP, Warner Brothers, Deutsche Gramophone, Geffen, Nonesuch, Capital, e Sony. Glen Velez tem sido um dos compositores preferidos na área da dança moderna e compôs música para companhias de dança tais como a Buglisi Dance Theater, a Bridgman/Packer Dance, a Mimi Garrard Dance Theater (VideoDances) e a Nai-Ni Chen Dance Co. Glen é um professor e mestre que conduz workshops no mundo inteiro. Tem vários vídeos e livros instrucionais e mais de uma dezena de gravações da sua música nas CMP, Music of the World, Sounds True, Interworld, Ellipsis Arts e DafTof Records. Velez desenvolveu a sua própria estratégia de ensino chamada “The Handance Method” [O Método da Dança das Mãos]. Este método integra voz e movimento corporal num processo de aprendizagem do modo de tocar Frame Drum e Shakers. Sendo um especialista em Asian Overtone Singing [Canto Asiático em Sobretom], Glen incorporou-o também nas suas acções educacionais e nas suas apresentações. Ele toca e grava regularmente com Coleman Barkes, um académico/tradutor da poesia Rumi e permanece activo no seu próprio Glen Velez Ensemble, no Trio Globo (com Howard Levy e Eugene Friesen), assim como em apresentações em dueto com a celebrada vocalista rítmica Lori Cotler. “ Mr. Velez’s music is unimaginable without his own technical mastery ... he uses that mastery to focus listeners’ concentration, like his own, on the wonders of sound and rhythm.” The New York Times “The marvelous Glen Velez creates miraculous sounds on the tambourine.” Daily Gazette, Schenectady, NY Glen Velez is a four-time Grammy Award winning master drummer and composer who is regarded as one of the most influential percussionists and world music composers of our time. He is responsible for increasing the popularity of frame drums in the US and around the World and for creating a new template for world percussion playing. His teaching and performances inspired the Remo Drum Co. in 1983 to develop a line of frame drums called the Glen Velez Signature Series. The Cooperman Drum Co. introduced a handcrafted Signature Series Glen Velez Tambourine and Frame Drum line in 1999. In addition, Glens innovative style of Shaker playing inspired Anklang Musikwelt to design a handcrafted Glen Velez Signature Series Shaker set, which were released in 2008. Glen has gained international recognition as a solo artist and is known for his 15 year recording and performing collaborations with composer Steve Reich as well as the Paul Winter Consort. Even twentieth century composer, John Cage acknowledged Velez’ mastery when he composed a solo frame drum piece especially for him in 1989. Glen has written music for theater and dance and recorded hundreds of albums on ECM, CBS, RCA, GRP, Warner Brothers, Deutsche Gramophone, Geffen, Nonesuch, Capital, and Sony. Glen Velez has a been a favorite composer on the modern dance scene and has composed scores for such dance companies as Buglisi Dance Theater, Bridgman/Packer Dance, Mimi Garrard Dance Theater (VideoDances) and Nai-Ni Chen Dance Co. Glen is a master teacher who conducts workshops worldwide and has published numerous books and articles on the subject. In addition, he has several instructional videos, instructional books and over a dozen recordings of his own music on CMP, Music of the World, Sounds True, Interworld, Ellipsis Arts and DafTof Records. Velez developed his own teaching approach called “The Handance Method.” It integrates voice and body movement into the process of learning to play the frame drum and Shakers and has been presented in hundreds of universities worldwide. Glen expertise in Central Asian Overtone Singing (split-tone/harmonic singing) is also incorporated into his teaching and performances. He regularly performs and records with Coleman Barkes, world renown scholar/translator of the poetry of Rumi and is active with his own Glen Velez Ensemble, Trio Globo (Howard Levy and Eugene Friesen), along with his duo performances with celebrated rhythm vocalist Lori Cotler. JEFFERY DAVIS ANDY CHANNING Jeffery Davis nasceu no Canadá, em 1981 e vive em Portugal desde 1985. Concluiu o curso na Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho (EPME) com 19 valores. Jeffery Davis was born in Canada in 1981 and lives in Portugal since 1985. He completed his course at the Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho (EPME – Professional School of Music of Espinho) with a classification of 19 (out of 20). É com o Drumming–GP que efectua variados concertos na Europa e fazendo várias estreias mundiais de obras escritas por compositores nacionais e internacionais como: Mário Laginha; João Pedro Oliveira; Emanuel Nunes; Carlos Azevedo; Jesus Torres; Emmanuel Séjourné, entre outros. It is with Drumming–GP that he performs in various concerts in Europe participating in several world premieres of pieces by national and international composers such as: Mário Laginha, João Pedro Oliveira, Emanuel Nunes, Carlos Azevedo, Jesus Torres, Emmanuel Séjourné, among others. Em Março de 2002 obtém o primeiro prémio no Concours International de Jazz, em Paris, conquistando uma bolsa de estudo para frequentar o curso na Berklee College of Music. Em Novembro desse ano, conclui o curso da ESMAE com nota máxima de 20 valores, sob orientação dos professores Miquel Bernat e Manuel Campos. Em Janeiro de 2003 desloca-se para os Estados Unidos, onde inicia o curso de Jazz Performance Vibraphone, na Berklee College of Music, que termina em Maio de 2006 com o estatuto de Summa Cum Laude. Destaca-se o vibrafonista de topo da Escola. Ganha inúmeros prémios atribuídos pela Berklee, designadamente: o prémio de Most Active Mallet Player; o Gary Burton Scholarship e o prémio por excelência académica Dean of Curriculum. Recebe também do IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) o prémio de Outstanding Musicianship. Nos Estados Unidos surge, de novo, a oportunidade de trabalhar com músicos de jazz, nomeadamente: Hal Crook; Joe Lovano; Gary Burton; Dave Liebman; Dave Samuels; Phil Wilson; Terrence Blanchard; Michel Camilo; Steve Swallow; Bob Mintzer; Ed Saindon; Vitor Mendoza; Roswel Rudd; Alex Terrier; Brian Baker, entre outros. Jeffery Davis mantém-se activo no mundo do jazz e clássico e integra vários projectos nacionais e apresenta vários recitais a solo, por toda a Europa, com um reportório escrito para si; lecciona na Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo do Porto e na Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho. In March 2002 he is awarded the first prize at the Concours International de Jazz (Jazz International Competition), in Paris, winning a scholarship for a degree at the Berklee College of Music. In November of that same year, he finishes his degree at Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo do Porto (ESMAE – Higher Education School of Music and the Performing Arts of Porto) with the maximum grade of 20 (out of 20), under the guidance of lecturers Miquel Bernat and Manuel Campos. Andy Channing estudou Gamelão na Indonesian Academy of Performing Arts (Academia de Artes Performativas da Indonesia) em Surakarta, Java Central. Desde 1991 tem tocado e ensinado Gamelão de Java e do Bali por toda a Europa incluindo Paris, Marselha e Porto assim como o Southbank Centre, a City University, e a SOAS (School of Oriental & African Studies – Escola de Estudos Orientais e Africanos) e a LSO StLuke’s (todas em Londres). É fundador e director artístico do Lila Cita, o mais importante grupo de Gamelão do Bali do Reino Unido e é também um dos membros da formação original do Southbank Gamelan Players (Tocadores de Gamelão de Southbank), um dos mais significativos grupos de Gamelão de Java da Europa. Compôs diversas peças para Gamelão. In January 2003 he goes to the United States where he enrolls in the Jazz Performance Vibraphone, at the Berklee College of Music. He finishes this degree in May 2006 with a classification of Summa Cum Laude. He stands out as one of the school’s top vibraphone players. He wins various awards attributed by Berklee, namely: the Most Active Mallet Player Award; the Gary Burton Scholarship and the academic excellence award Dean of Curriculum. He also receives the Outstanding Musicianship Award from the IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education). In the United States he has, again, the chance of working with Jazz musicians, namely: Hal Crook, Joe Lovano, Gary Burton, Dave Liebman, Dave Samuels, Phil Wilson, Terrence Blanchard, Michel Camilo, Steve Swallow, Bob Mintzer, Ed Saindon, Vitor Mendoza, Roswel Rudd, Alex Terrier, Brian Baker, among others. Jeffery Davis is active in the jazz and classical musical worlds; is part of various national musical projects; and presents solo recitals, across Europe, with a repertoire written particularly for him. He lectures at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo do Porto (ESMAE – Higher Education School of Music and the Performing Arts of Porto) and at the Escola Profissional de Música de Espinho (EPME – Professional School of Music of Espinho) PAULO ZÉ NETO Paulo Zé Neto, licenciou-se em Ensino de Música, Teoria e Formação Musical na Universidade de Aveiro e terminou o Curso Geral do Instituto de Pedagogia Musical Zoltán Kódaly, em Kecskmét (Hungria). Frequentou diversos estágios de Pedagogia Musical e de Direcção Coral/Orquestra. Participa actualmente nos projectos: Flauta quase Mágica, Grande Bichofonia, Zoológico, Bebe Plim Plim, entre outros. É professor de Formação Auditiva no I.S. Piaget de Viseu e de Formação Musical, no Conservatório de Música de Águeda. É ainda director artístico do coro Orfeão de Águeda. Pertence à equipa da área educativa da Casa da Música desde Janeiro de 2007, onde desenvolve diversos workshops como os de Gamelão onde trabalha regularmente com Andy Channing. Participou no Gamelan Weekend no Southbank Centre, em Londres, onde trabalhou com o mestre indonésio Rahayu Supanggah e com Duncan Chapman. Andy Channing studied gamelan at the Indonesian Academy of Performing Arts, Surakarta, Central Java. Since 1991 he has taught and performed Javanese amd Balinese gamelan throughout Europe, including the Southbank Centre, City University, SOAS (School of Oriental & African Studies) and LSO StLuke’s (all in London) and in Paris, Marseille and Porto. He is founder and artistic director of Lila Cita, the UK’s premier Balinese gamelan performing group, and is also an original member of Southbank Gamelan Players, one of the foremost Javanese gamelan groups in Europe. He has composed several pieces for gamelan. Paulo Zé Neto holds a degree in Music Teaching, Theory and Musical Training from Universidade de Aveiro (Aveiro University) and finished a degree in Musical Pedagogy at the Zoltán Kódaly Musical Pedagogy Institute, in Kecskmét (Hungary). He has completed several internships in Musical Pedagogy and Choir/Orchestra Direction. He currently participates in the projects: Flauta quase Mágica, Grande Bichofonia, Zoológico, Bebe Plim Plim, among others. He is a lecturer in Auditory Training at the Instituto Superior Piaget de Viseu (Piaget Higher Education Institute of Viseu) and teaches Musical Training at the Conservatório de Música de Águeda (Music Conservatory of Águeda). He is still the artistic director of the choir Orfeão de Águeda. He is a member of the educational team of Casa da Música since January 2007 where he develops various workshops such as the Gamelan workshops, where he regularly works with Andy Channing. He took part in the Gamelan Weekend at the Southbank Centre, in London, where he worked with the Indonesian Master Rahayu Supanggah and with Duncan Chapman.
