Southern India. The University has been ranked 6 by the department of Science and Technology, India,
among the Universities in country in terms of Science and Technology output. The University has also
been ranked 15 among the top 35 national institutions in terms of scientific output in the form of
publications. The NAAC has assessed the University in all respects and based on the excellent
performance, University of Madras has been accredited “Five Star Level” at first instance, with an “A”
status in the second instance.
About the National Centre for NSNT
To mark the 150th year celebrations of the University, the University of Madras has come forward to
establish a National Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (NCNSNT) in India based on its
existing strength with full academic and administrative autonomy. The Mission of NCNSNT is to
concentrate and develop world class research under a single roof and support the researchers who are
working in the area of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The centre stands as a shining example of
creation of an advanced research facility of multidisciplinary research linkages with industry and
national laboratories to create cutting edge technologies.
