PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AT GRADED
PROPOSAL FOR EARLY DISMISSAL ON WEDNESDAYS (as of May 2010)
Rationale
The intent of having a slightly earlier dismissal on Wednesdays is to provide a 70 or 80-minute block of
common meeting time within normal contract hours for all Graded teachers one time per week. As teachers
are being encouraged to be more consistent, collaborative, and reflective about improving student learning,
this regularly scheduled time is necessary.
Proposed Schedule Modification and Impact on Instructional Time
On Wednesdays, students will be dismissed at approximately 2:40 pm rather than 3:10 pm.


In middle and high school, no instructional time will be lost. In these divisions, we are simply removing
Flex Time and Community Time one day per week.
In the Lower School, we anticipate a slight loss in “instructional minutes” each week. This represents
just a few hours over the course of an entire semester, an amount of time easily returned to students by
just having two less professional half days throughout the year.
Anticipated Benefits

A well-articulated professional development plan for the entire school year that emphasizes identified
school-wide, department, and team goals.
 Common meeting time for teacher teams to work on curriculum, instruction and assessment strategies,
professional development, technology integration, and much more.
 The potential for more meaningful instructional time in some classes as a result of reducing the number
of days when classes are shortened (professional half days).
 The potential for increased structured study time for students, as well as the opportunity for several
clubs and activities to meet on Wednesdays.
 Some “breathing room” for high school students in which they can have some unstructured work time
for themselves, something that has been identified as an urgent need at the school for many years.

school day, we anticipate that very little, if any, instructional time will be lost in each division. The fact
that this time will be distributed across multiple subject areas makes the impact negligible.
 Bus transportation: We have confirmed that Graded’s bus transportation service is capable of handling
this proposed change on Wednesday afternoons. The 16:15 and 18:00 bus times will not change.
 After-school activities and sports: We are in the process of ensuring that activities, sports, and classes
that take place between 3:15 and 4:00 are not negatively affected by this change. Some activities might
be scheduled on different days than during this school year, but we are committed to making sure
students can still take advantage of the many wonderful opportunities available to them at Graded.

DESENVOLVIMENTO PROFISSIONAL NA GRADUADA
PROPOSTA DE SAÍDA ANTECIPADA ÀS QUARTAS-FEIRAS (a partir de maio 2010)
Objetivo
A intenção de ter uma saída ligeiramente antecipada às quartas-feiras é obter um bloco de 70 ou 80 minutos
em comum para reunião de todos os professores da Graduada, dentro do horário normal de trabalho, uma
vez por semana. Como os professores têm sido estimulados a ser mais coerentes, colaboradores e reflexivos
a respeito do aprendizado dos alunos, esse tempo regularmente agendado é necessário.
Proposta de mudança de horário e impacto sobre o tempo de aulas
Às quartas-feiras, os alunos serão liberados às 2h40, aproximadamente, em vez de 3h10.
 No Middle e no High School, não se perderá nenhum tempo de aula. Nessas divisões, estamos
simplesmente removendo o Flex Time e o Community Time, um dia por semana.
 No Lower School, haverá uma pequena perda de alguns minutos de aula, a cada semana. Isso
representará somente algumas horas, durante um semestre, tempo facilmente devolvido aos alunos
por termos dois "Professional half days " (tradicionais tardes de desenvolvimento profissional, sem
aulas) a menos no ano.

Um plano de desenvolvimento profissional bem articulado para todo o ano escolar, que prioriza as
metas identificadas por toda a escola, departamentos e grupos de trabalho.
Tempo comum de trabalho para os grupos de professores se dedicarem a currículo, metodologia e
estratégias de avaliação, desenvolvimento profisisonal, integração com tecnologia e muito mais.
Possibilidade de mais tempo significativo de aula para algumas matérias, como consequência da
redução do número de dias em que há aulas mais curtas (professional half days).
Possibilidade para aumento do tempo de estudo estruturado para os alunos, assim como
oportunidade para clubes e atividades se encontrarem às quartas-feiras.
Possíveis preocupações



Tempo de aula: Não havendo professional half days agendados durante o ano
escolar,acrescentando-se um dia extra no calendário e sendo criativos como alguns momentos de
transição durante o dia de aula, prevemos que muito pouco tempo de aula, se isso for necessário,
será perdido em cada divisão. O fato de que esse tempo será distribuído pelas diferentes disciplinas
tornará o impacto insignificante.
Ônibus escolares: Já verificamos que os ônibus escolares que servem a escola poderão se adaptar
às mudanças das quartas-feiras à tarde. Os ônibus das 16h15 e das 18h manterão esses mesmos
horários.
Atividades de after-school (3h15) e esportes: Estamos prestes a afirmar que atividades, esportes e
aulas dos horários entre 3h15 e 4h não serão prejudicados por essa mudança. Algumas atividades
poderão ser agendadas para diferentes dias, durante o ano escolar, mas estamos comprometidos
em garantir que os alunos possam continuar desfrutando das excelentes oportunidades a eles
disponíveis na Graduada.
