It happened in 2547. A wave 100 feet [30 m] high arose off the
coast of the former Kingdom of Siam and advanced inland. It
destroyed houses, drowned people and engulfed everything in
its path. It was so overwhelming that it looked like the place
was beyond salvation. Described as such, it sounds like a
remote legend. But the year 2547 in the Buddhist Era corresponds to 2004 in the Gregorian calendar, and old Siam is the
present-day Kingdom of Thailand, where 8 thousand people
fell victim to the giant tsunami in the Indian Ocean — among
them, 2 thousand tourists from 16 countries.
It was eight years on December 26th, 2012 — or 2555, as subjects of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who's been on the throne
since 1946, prefer. And, to the surprise of visitors who've been
coming every year to the country's formerly devastated southern coast (more than 5 million people, a record never achieved
before the tragedy), the region seems completely recuperated.
Its new face is fundamental for Thailand, which already welcomes 19 million foreigners each year, to reach its goal of doubling its tourism dividends by 2016.
I searched for evidence of this renovation ever since flying
from the capital Bangkok to the airport in Phuket, the main
base for exploring Thailand's exotic beaches. Meanwhile,
on the way to the hotel, I realized that the city which welcomed me with smiles was no longer weeping over its sad
past. Peaked temples and images of Buddha were here and
there, Chinese and American tourists took advantage of the

ACONTECEU EM 2547. UMA ONDA DE
30 metros de altura ergueu-se no litoral
do antigo Reino do Sião e avançou terra
adentro. Destruiu casas, afogou pessoas,
engoliu o que viu pela frente — e de forma tão avassaladora que pareceu deixar
o lugar irrecuperável. Descrito assim, soa
até como uma lenda remota. Mas o ano
de 2547 da era budista equivale ao de
2004 do calendário gregoriano ocidental, e o velho Sião nada mais é do que o
atual Reino da Tailândia, onde morreram
8 mil vítimas do gigantesco tsunami do
Oceano Índico — entre elas, 2 mil turistas
de 16 países.
Oito anos se completaram no dia 26 de
dezembro de 2012 — ou de 2555, como
preferem os súditos do rei Bhumibol
Adulyadej, no trono desde 1946. E, para
surpresa dos visitantes que têm desembarcado anualmente no antes devastado litoral sul do país (mais de 5 milhões
de pessoas, um recorde nunca atingido
antes da tragédia), a região parece absolutamente recuperada. Sua nova face
é fundamental para que a Tailândia, que
já recebe 19 milhões de estrangeiros por
ano, dobre os dividendos trazidos pelo
turismo até 2016.
Procurei evidências dessa renovação
desde que, vindo da capital, Bangcoc,
pousei no aeroporto de Phuket, base
para explorar as idílicas praias tailandesas. Já no caminho para o hotel percebi
que a cidade que me recebia com sorrisos não mais chorava seu passado triste.
Pontiagudos templos e imagens de Buda
se exibiam aqui e ali, turistas chineses e
norte-americanos aproveitavam os preços
baratos do comércio para encher suas sacolas com roupas e artesanato nos arredores da agitada praia de Patong, outdoors
anunciavam lutas de muay thai e delicadas
apresentações de dança e música típicas.

Em meio a muitas obras pelas ruas, a hotelaria se renovou
buscando não preservar qualquer resquício dos traumáticos
tempos de abalo — quando seis de cada dez hotéis desapareceram em praias como Khao Lak e Ko Phi Phi (esta última
celebrizada mundialmente pelo filme A Praia, protagonizado
pelo ator Leonardo DiCaprio). Com cerca de 50 mil leitos na
região de Phuket, os hotéis disputam qual é o mais cênico e original, qual ostenta mais luxo, qual traduz melhor a alma exótica
e tropical da Tailândia.
No alto dos abismos da Baía de Kamala, o staff do exclusivíssimo hotel Paresa nos recebeu com água de coco gelada e
toalhinha refrescante no check-in — além de uma vista de 270
graus do Mar de Andaman. Seu azul se confundia com o das
piscinas de borda infinita (presentes na maioria das 49 acomodações, assim como máquinas de café expresso e tocadores
de mp3). O spa, naturalmente, oferecia o que a Tailândia tem
de melhor: massagens incríveis. E, tendo ao redor um cenário
vertiginoso, avistado de qualquer parte, um conforto especial:
estar a uma altura que tsunami algum alcançaria.
Os ambientes desse e do outro hotel chique que eu conheceria — o premiado The Sarojin, na província vizinha de Phang
Nga — não escondem o fato de terem sido pensados especialmente para casais em lua de mel, 7% dos turistas que visitam
o país. No The Sarojin, tudo inspira romantismo — a começar
pela iluminação dos restaurantes. Um deles tem pé na areia
e apresentações culturais noturnas à luz de tochas; outro fica
colado a um bar com degustações de surpreendentes vinhos

low prices to fill their shopping bags with clothes and handicrafts in the areas surrounding the lively Patong Beach, billboards advertised muay thai fights and delicate dance and
music performances.
In the midst of several street construction projects, the hotel
industry renewed itself seeking not to preserve any remains of
the disaster — when six out of every ten hotels disappeared
on such beaches as Khao Lak and Ko Phi Phi (the latter rose
to worldwide fame thanks to the movie The Beach, starring
Leonardo DiCaprio). With around 50 thousand beds in the region of Phuket, the hotels compete to be the most scenic and
original, to flaunt the most luxury and best represent the exotic,
tropical soul of Thailand.
High above the abysses of Kamala Bay, the staff at the extremely exclusive Paresa hotel welcomed us with chilled coconut water and a refreshing towelette at the reception area —
as well as a 270-degree view of the Andaman Sea. Its blue
blends with the infinity edge pools (present in most of the 49
accommodations, as are espresso machines and mp3 players). Naturally, the spa offers what Thailand does best: amazing massages. And, in the middle of the dizzying scene viewed
from any part, a special comfort: being at an altitude which no
tsunami could reach.
The ambiences inside this and the other fancy hotel that I
would visit — the award-winning The Sarojin in the neighboring province of Phang Nga — don't hide the fact that they are
specially planned for honeymooning couples, 7% of tourists in

tailandeses. Os terraços contam com piscinas privadas. E, orgulho nacional, a gastronomia tailandesa mescla com perfeição os
sabores salgado, doce, azedo e picante em receitas que usam
e abusam de curries, coco e capim-limão — melhor: é possível
aprender um pouco dessa culinária em aulas nos hotéis.
Por mais simpáticos que sejam os funcionários de redes hoteleiras e restaurantes, eles jamais se arriscam a falar a palavra
“tsuna...”. Por culpa do dito cujo, todo mundo perdeu alguém
querido. Os turistas respeitam. E trocam ideias sobre os bons
prazeres de mergulhos nas ilhas Similan e Surin, escaladas em
rocha em Krabi, passeios de caiaque e escuna entre cavernas
marinhas e altas rochas da Baía de Phang Nga (onde fica a ilhota onde foi gravado 007 Contra o Homem com a Pistola de
Ouro) e aventuras em lombo de elefantes. Não são poucos os
relatos, por sinal, sobre esses mamíferos terem emitido sons
estranhos de alerta ou fugido para o alto das montanhas horas
antes da chegada do tsunami de 2547 — ops, de 2004 —, uma
suposta evidência de que teriam sensibilidade para captar com
antecedência as vibrações de terremotos como os que originaram aquele tsunami.
Quase uma década depois do susto, os elefantes do litoral
tailandês caminham em paz e são bem treinados para divertir
os viajantes — o meu nem se importou de cruzar um riacho e me

inspires romanticism — starting with the
lighting in the restaurants. One of them
is set on the sand and features nightly
cultural performances by torchlight; another is attached to a bar which offers
samples of Thailand's surprising wines.
The terraces include private pools.
And, the nation's pride, Thai cuisine perfectly blends salty, sweet, sour and spicy
flavors in recipes that use and abuse curries, coconut and lemon grass — the best
part is that you can learn about the food
from cooking classes at the hotels.
As friendly as the hotel and restaurant
employees are, they would never risk
saying the dreaded word “tsuna...” Because of that cursed word, everyone lost
a loved one. Tourists respect this. And
they exchange ideas about the pleasures of scuba diving off the Similan and
Surin islands, rock climbing in Krabi, kayaking and schooner trips among ocean
caves and the high rocks of Phang Nga
Bay (where the small island on which The
Man with the Golden Gun was filmed
is located) and adventures on elephant
back. Incidentally, there are numerous
accounts of these mammals emitting
strange warning cries or fleeing to the
mountains hours before the arrival of
the tsunami of 2547 — I mean, 2004 —,
one supposed piece of evidence that
they are sensitive enough to feel the vibrations, in advance, of earthquakes like
those that originated the tsunami.
Nearly a decade after the scare, the
elephants on the Thai coastline walk
in peace and are well-trained to entertain visitors — mine didn't mind crossing a stream and giving me a bath. In

dar um belo banho. Nas ruas do centro
de Phuket ou nas vilas de pescadores, só
o que faz lembrar a tragédia são os alto-falantes e placas que orientam rotas de
fuga para o caso de — toc, toc, toc — algo
parecido voltar a ocorrer. Durante todos os dias em que viajei por ali, a única
lembrança física que encontrei (além das
reconstruções impecáveis da infraestrutura turística) foi um simples memorial do
tsunami erguido em torno de um barco
policial que foi empurrado a quase 2 quilômetros da praia de Khao Lak.
Felizmente, do mesmo jeito que veio,
a onda se foi. E as praias da Tailândia,
agora voltadas para o futuro, continuam
a encantar seus visitantes.

escape routes in case something similar
happens again. On all the days I spent
there traveling, the one piece of physical evidence I found (aside from the impeccable reconstructions of the tourist
infrastructure) was a simple memorial
of the tsunami erected around a police
boat that was pushed nearly 1.25 miles
[2 km] from Khao Lak Beach.
Fortunately, the wave left the same
way that it came. And the beaches of
Thailand, now ready for the future, continue to enchant visitors.
