Cavalier Baseball Downs South Georgia
before Dropping Series to Middle
Georgia College
The Cavalier baseball team defeated South Georgia College, 7-6, last Wednesday to sweep
the season series. Matt Weaver (3-3) earned the win, throwing six innings and striking out
three, while Michael Chovonec, Luis Cintron and Jeremy Boyd all smacked doubles in the
win. The victory preceded a three game series with Region XVII power Middle Georgia
College.
In game one versus MGC, Darton College erupted for 12 runs in the first inning as the
Cavaliers cruised to a 15-4 win in seven innings. The Cavaliers connected for eight hits in
the bottom of the first inning and were helped by some MGC defensive miscues as they
jumped to the early lead.
"We got a couple of guys on, got a couple of bunts down that were in the right place and it
kind of snowballed on them after that," Darton head coach Glenn Eames said. "It's just one
of those innings."
Sophomore pitcher Levi Futo pitched a complete game as his record improved to 8-3
overall. Futo allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts.
Luis Cintron and Dionis Bryant went 2-for-4 with two RBI to help lead Darton. Erick
Gaylord added three hits in the win.
On Saturday, the Cavaliers dropped both games of the double header versus MGC 5-1 and
6-5 respectively.
Two of the Cavaliers' top hitters, Tagg Lanier and Trent Dooly, were not in Saturday's
lineup because of broken wrists after getting hit by pitches.
Lanier suffered his injury earlier in the season and is day to day. Dooly will likely be lost
for the remainder of the season.
Darton scored its lone run in the first game on a Luis Cintron groundout.
In the second game trailing 6-3, a run-scoring single by Erick Gaylord and an error allowed
for the Cavs to pull within one run. Jeremy Boyd walked to load the bases before Dylon
Murk flied to right to end the game.
Lady Cavalier Basketball Introduces New
Faces
Darton College’s basketball coach Laura Blackwell signed five players recently to add to the
strong returning class fresh off a perfect 10-0 in the GJCAA and 21-7 overall.
The Lady Cavaliers on Thursday singed Terrell County's Abril Smith and Shaylia Jester,
Bainbridge's Zaikia Dawson, Westover's Brittany Gilbert and Lowndes' D-Arcy Williams.
"I think we just kind of hopefully reloaded," said Blackwell, whose team finished last
season 21-7 and was the top seed going into the region tourney before losing, 93-83, in
overtime against Middle Georgia. "I like that for the first time in several years, we've got
some good returning freshmen coming back and I feel we've got some really talented
athletes from the area coming in."
Darton returns two starters in NJCAA Third Team All American Monshay Thomas and All
Region Performer Marah Wright.
Jester and Bryant will add a much-needed presence in the post, and Dawson can play
either guard or post. Williams, Blackwell said, is consistent at 3-point range.
"I'm pretty excited about the inside depth that we are obtaining," Blackwell said. "And at
point guard, we've got several players now we can interchange. Brittany had to play down
low all season for Westover, so she's fired up about possibly returning to point guard."
Cavalier Softball Splits with GMC;
Sweeps Truett
The Darton College Lady Cavalier Softball tam lost game one versus GMC 2-1 on a
controversial call in the 7th inning. Natalia Morozova pitched six innings giving up one run
and scattering six hits. Hannah Billingsley pitched one inning in relief and took the loss on
an unearned run. Destiny Echols was 2 for 4 and Kari Barnes was 2 for 2 at the plate.
The second game DC won 12 -2 with Carly Keane getting the win. She pitched a complete
game giving up one earned run. Natalia Morozova was 4 for 5 with a HR, Kari Barnes was
3 for 5 with a HR and Alix Cooper was 3 for 3 with a double and a triple.
On Saturday the Lady Cavs swept Truett 19-1 and 5-0 to improve the team’s record to 258 overall and 11-2 in conference. Hannah Billingsley got the win in game one striking out
5 and scattering 4 hits. Natalia Morozova was 4 for 5 hitting for the cycle with 6 RBI’s,
Destiny Echols was 3 for 4 with a HR and a double, and Kari Barnes was 3 for 3 with a HR
and a double. The Cavs pounded out 20 hits in the game one route.
Sophomore Stephanie Martin picked up the win in game 2 throwing another no-hitter and
striking out 9. Natalia Morozova was 3 for 4, Destiny Echols was 2 for 3 and Hannah
Layton was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple. The Lady Cav’s are currently tied for first
place with Middle Georgia College.
DC is back in action on Wednesday hosting MGC for the top spot in the conference.
