WALK. WALK A LOT. This is the hint
from Brazilians who live or spend a lot of
time in New York. They are unanimous in
their opinion that the best way to know the
city is on foot — this is the only way to find
that restaurant that is not in any guide, that
little store only the locals know, or even that
park a tourist could never imagine existed.
“I like to hunt for little stores, rummage in
flea markets, and this is why I like walking.
Besides being great exercise, it’s the best way to
find new places,” says Brazilian model Luciana
Curtis. One of her favorite routes brings her to
Williamsburg, “a little corner of Brooklyn full of
artists, sculptors, designers and photographers.”
Some Brazilians prefer walking in betterknown, but equally charming areas. It is in
Soho, for example, that stylist Amir Slama
spends most of his time in New York when he
is there to show each season’s new Rosa Chá
collections. He’s not the only one: for economist Ricardo Amorim, host of the TV show
Manhattan Connection, “it’s hard to think of
better things to do than walking in Soho in a
sunny day, in any season.”
Slama has two more tips for walks in New
York: Nolita (North of Little Italy) and the
Meatpacking District. Nolita is an area that
combines charming restaurants and the “family” feeling of an Italian district. Meatpacking is
an area next to the Hudson river where longstanding warehouses now share the space with
clubs, restaurants and fancy boutiques.

AVENTURE-SE PARA FORA DE MANHATTAN
Entre uma sessão de fotos e outra, Luciana Curtis pega sua bicicleta e
cruza a Brooklyn Bridge para ir até o Prospect Park. É lá também um
dos destinos preferidos do artista plástico Vik Muniz quando leva sua
filha Mina, de 2 anos, para passear. Localizado no Brooklyn, o parque
de 2 quilômetros quadrados foi desenhado por Frederick Olmstead, o
arquiteto que projetou o Central Park. A diferença é que o Prospect
Park é “mais bonito, mais tranqüilo e vazio”, acha Muniz.
Mas a vida em Nova York não se resume a programas ao ar livre,

CAMINHE, CAMINHE MUITO. Essa é a recomendação dos
brasileiros que moram ou passam boa parte do ano em Nova York. Eles
são unânimes em dizer que a melhor maneira de conhecer a cidade é
andando – só assim descobre-se aquele restaurante que não está nos
guias, aquela loja que só os locais conhecem ou até mesmo aquele
parque que um turista jamais imaginaria existir.
“Gosto de achar lojinhas, fuçar em brechós, por isso gosto de caminhar. Além de um bom exercício, é a melhor maneira de conhecer
lugares novos”, diz a modelo brasileira Luciana Curtis. Um de seus passeios prediletos é ir até Williamsburg, “um cantinho do Brooklyn
preferido por artistas, escultores, designers e fotógrafos”.
Há brasileiros que preferem caminhar por bairros mais conhecidos,
mas não menos encantadores. É no Soho, por exemplo, que o estilista
Amir Slama passa a maior parte do tempo quando está em Nova York
para apresentar as novas coleções da Rosa Chá na New York Fashion
Week. Mas ele não é o único a gostar do lugar. O economista Ricardo
Amorim, apresentador do Manhattan Connection, acha “difícil pensar
em um programa melhor do que passear pelo Soho num dia ensolarado
de verão, outono ou primavera”.
Slama ainda recomenda dois outros passeios: Nolita (North of Little
Italy) e Meatpacking District. Nolita é um bairro que combina restaurantes charmosos com clima “família” de bairro italiano. Já o
Meatpacking é a zona de galpões de frigoríficos que agora divide espaço
com clubes, restaurantes e butiques chiques, junto ao rio Hudson.
Há quem não dispense o tradicional passeio pelo Central Park. “Vou
muito aos shows do Central Park Summerstage no verão. Outro programa é passear pelo calçadão reformado da West Side Highway. É o local
perfeito para fotografar a cidade e ver aquele pôr-do-sol”, comenta o produtor musical Béco Dranoff, um dos promotores da música brasileira no
exterior e co-fundador do selo Ziriguiboom, que lança internacionalmente discos de artistas brasileiros como Bebel Gilberto.
Amorim também recomenda o pequeno e charmoso Bryant Park,
bem no coração de Manhattan. “Aproveito o fato de o parque ser próximo ao meu trabalho para dar uma volta e relaxar na hora do almoço.”

Amorim also recommends the small and charming Bryant Park, in the
heart of Manhattan. “I take advantage of the fact that it’s close to work to
take a walk and relax in my lunch hour.”
In between one photo shoot and the next, Luciana Curtis climbs on her
bike and crosses the Brooklyn Bridge to reach the Prospect Park. This is also
one of the favorite destinations of artist Vik Muniz when he takes his
daughter, Mina, for a ride. Located in Brooklin, the 2-square kilometer
park was designed by Frederick Olmstead, the same architect behind the
Central Park. The difference is that the Prospect Park is “more beautiful,
more peaceful and less crowded,” says Muniz.
But life in New York is not limited to outdoor walks: many of the best
are in the city’s thousands of museums, theaters, bars and restaurants.
Muniz tips us off to two relatively unknown, but great addresses for art:
The PS1 Contemporary Art Center and the Isamu Noguchi Museum. “You
just have to see the Zen garden at Noguchi,” concurs shoe designer
Constança Basto, who keeps a showroom in town.

secret,” says Muniz. One of his favorites is the “fantastic program” at the
Brooklyn Academy of Music, with concertos, operas, ballets, dance and music
festivals. Ricardo Amorim prefers the Time Warner Center, with its “delightful

coffee, spectacular bookstore, Jazz at Lincoln Center, some of the best restaurants

jantares tarde da noite”. Já Luciana recomenda o Taj Mahal, “o melhor restaurante indiano de NYC”. Béco Dranoff está encantado com sua última descoberta: o River Café,
embaixo da Brooklyn Bridge.
“Nova York e Tóquio são para mim as
capitais do mundo gastronômico. Em
Manhattan, vamos sempre ao imperdível
Daniel. Daniel Boulud é um grande amigo e
um artista genial. Um novo segredo meu é
o Sakagura, escondido num prédio de
escritórios entre a Segunda e a Terceira
Avenidas”, ensina Muniz, que ainda sugere

“NYC’s best Indian restaurant.” Béco is in awe of his latest find: the River
Café, under the Brooklyn Bridge.
“Nova York and Tokyo are the capitals of gastronomy for me. In
Manhattan, we always go to Daniel. Daniel Boloud is great friend and a
genius of an artist. One of my new secrets is Sakagura, hidden in an office
building between Second and Third Avenues,” Muniz lectures, and goes
on to recommend Locanda Vini i Olli, an old drugstore converted into an
Italian restaurant, and the Brooklyn Blue Ribbon Sushi, where “chef Toshi
Ueki translates the goodies of his homeland into great ambience.”
Who better to point out a place with good music than Dranoff? His
suggestion is the Cielo, where Mondays offer the DeepSpace party, with
DJ François Kevorkian. “It’s a small club, but with a perfect sound system,
and FK plays a very interesting selection of different sounds and beats.”
Nublu, at Avenida C, in the East Village, is another small bar worthy of
praise from the musical producer, for its “relaxed air where musicians
gather and play innovative music until late at night.”

o Locanda Vini i Olii, uma antiga farmácia transformada em restaurante italiano, e o Blue Ribbon Sushi no Brooklyn, onde “o chef Toshi
Ueki traduz em grande ambientação as delícias da sua terra natal”.
Ninguém mais indicado para recomendar um lugar com boa música do que Dranoff. Ele indica o Cielo, onde às segundas-feiras acontece
a festa Deep Space do DJ François Kevorkian. “O clube é pequeno, mas
tem um sistema de som perfeito e o François K. toca uma mistura
muito interessante de sons e ritmos sempre diferentes.” O Nublu, na
Avenida C no East Village, é outro bar pequeno que o produtor musical
recomenda por ser “muito descontraído, onde os músicos se encontram e tocam sons inovadores até tarde da noite”.
Amorim também tem sua recomendação: o bar Ava Garden.
“Além da vista maravilhosa de Manhattan, esse bar na cobertura do
Dream Hotel normalmente é povoado por gente bonita e não está
entre os bares mais complicados para conseguir uma mesa.” O joalheiro Jack Vartanian, que vem a cada dois meses a Nova York e
mantém um estúdio no Upper East Side, não perde a balada do
Beatrice Inn. “É tipo um pub, mas superdifícil de entrar. É do irmão
da Chloë Sevigny, Paul, que é o DJ.” Dranoff ainda lembra de outro
ótimo lugar para tomar um drink: o Brandy Library, na North Moore
Street, em Tribeca. “É um bar perfeito”, garante ele.

Hotel is normally full of beautiful people and
not one of the hardest to get a table at.” Jeweler
Jack Vartanian, who comes to New York every
two months and keeps a studio in the Upper
East Side, won’t miss partying at the Beatrice
Inn. “It’s like a pub, only really hard to get in. It
belongs to Chloë Sevigny’s brother, Paul, who is
a DJ.” Dranoff has one more place for drinks:
the Brandy Library, on North Moore Street.
“It’s the perfect bar,” be promises.
BOOKS, STATIONERY AND OTHER TRINKETS
There is no such thing as talking about New
York without talking about shopping. For the
book buffs, Dranoff suggests Strand, “the
city’s biggest, like a museum for books.”
Luciana Curtis recommends Spoonbill & Sugartown, “an bookstore specializing in arts,

Falar sobre Nova York sem falar em comprar é uma impossibilidade.
Para os apaixonados por livrarias, Dranoff sugere a Strand, que “é a
maior da cidade, como um museu de livros”. Luciana Curtis indica a
Spoonbill & Sugartown, “livraria de arte, das melhores da cidade”.
“Flanar por papelarias em NY é um programa à parte. Elas têm
de tudo, de todas as cores, texturas e tamanhos”, diz Jack
Vartanian. A Pearl, um prédio inteiro de suprimentos para arte,
situado no coração de Chinatown, é a sua preferida.
Para os ligados em moda e design, a cidade oferece desde as marcas mais famosas do mundo de roupas, sapatos e jóias até os brechós
onde é possível encontrar aquela roupa de grife a preços acessíveis. É o
caso do Beacon’s Closet, onde, segundo Luciana Curtis, com “paciência dá para encontrar muita coisa boa”, e da Ugly Luggage, uma loja de
móveis usados “superbacana”.
Constança recomenda o brechó Jeffrey, onde, diz, existe a melhor
seleção de roupas de grife a preços “convidativos”, e Cherry Vintage,
para quem gosta de sapatos vintage. Vem também da carioca a dica
para descansar o corpo depois de tanta bateção de perna: fazer uma
aula de yoga no Jivamukti Yoga Center. O arremate perfeito para quem
quer se sentir um verdadeiro nova-iorquino.

“Browsing through stationeries in NY is in a
class of its own. They have it all, in every color,
shape and size,” says Jack Vartanian. Pearl, a
whole building full of art supplies in the heart of
Chinatown, is his favorite.
For fashion and design aficionados, the city
has from the world’s top clothing, footwear and
jewelry labels to flea markets where you can find
designer clothes at reasonable prices. Case in
point, the Beacon’s Closet, where, according to
Luciana Curtis, “a little patience will get lots of
good stuff,” and the Uggly Luggage, a “supercool” user furniture store.
Constança recommends Jeffreys whose selection of designer labels is the best, according to her,
and at “inviting” prices, as well as the Cherry
Vintage, for lovers of vintage shoes. She also has a
tip for some much needed relaxation after covering lots of ground: a Yoga class at the Jikamuti
Yoga Center. The perfect ending for people who
want to feel like born New Yorkers.
