We fly beyond the common, being respectful to all people, in all we do at Eastvalley. A look Inside this Issue ..... - Practicing for the CRCT - Classified Employee of the Year - Mother / Son Bowling - School Council Application Jump Rope for Heart Thank you to everyone who participated in our 2010 Jump Rope for Heart event! On Friday, February 12th, all grade levels came to the gym during their specials time to take part in our annual Jump Rope for Heart event. There were a variety of activities set up on a rotation for all students to participate in and show off their jumping skills. We had music, balloons and a lot of smiling students! The teachers even got in the act and showed off their jumping skills for their students. And we can’t forget to mention the appearance of Super Chicken and Mr. Heart during 5th Eastvalley jumps to help others grade’s time slot! The “jump-off” will go down in the Eastvalley history books! They both gave an excellent showing! Our top fundraiser was Jordan Davis in Ms. Branham’s 5th grade class. Our second place runner up was Sydney Spessard in Ms. O’Meara & Ms. Pitoniak’s 1st grade class. And our third place winner was Devon Walcott in Ms. Magee’s kindergarten class! Congratulations to you all! There were a total of 20 students who raised at least $100! Those students will have the opportunity to throw a “pie” at Coach Albert on their Field Day in May. But most of all, we are proud of the great Super Chicken and Mr Heart contributions our Eastvalley families made to the American Heart Association! We raised a total of $6,520.10! That’s more than double what we raised last year! All the funds raised will go to help put an end to heart disease. Thank you again for your support! School website: www.EastvalleyElementary.com PTA website: www.eastvalleypta.org Eagle Eyes a Publication of your Eastvalley PTA® August March2009 2010 A Letter From Our Principal Page Dear Eastvalley Family, Spring Break is almost here. I hope that all of you have plans to spend some time together as a family relaxing and re-energizing your batteries. If you are traveling, please be safe. The building will be closed from April 5th - 9th. When we return on April 12, the time for settling back into a routine prior to Karen Wacker, Principal CRCT for 1st-5th grades will be brief. Testing will begin Wednesday, April 14 and continue through April 23 including make up tests. We need you to help us have all students ready for testing by: 1. Have your child well rested. Bedtime may need to be adjusted to give students well needed sleep, so they will be alert during testing. 2. Feed your child a protein filled breakfast. Sugar cereals or other sugary treats will lead to a sugar crash during testing. Protein will help them stay awake and alert. 3. BE ON TIME!!! It’s critical to be at school early to give your child time to settle in before testing begins. Testing will begin right after morning announcements, at approximately 8:05. Late students are sent to the Media Center for up to 2 hours while others are testing. Make up testing can be stressful to your child. 4. Keep your child home ONLY if they are throwing up or running a fever. Sometimes children will feel a headache or stomachache if they are nervous about testing. Try to reassure your child that all will be well and send them to school. 5. Be positive about testing. Do not stress your child more by “studying” for the test. The children have been taught the Georgia Performance Standards and if they have put in the time practicing and learning along the way, they will be fine. 6. Talk to them each day about the test they took and how they think they did. Be positive about their efforts and hard work. 7. Relax! The CRCT is one “snapshot” of their learning through the year. Be proud of the progress your child is showing every day. As you will find on page 11 of this Eagle Eyes, there is an application for parents to submit to run for the Eastvalley School Council. Please give some consideration to this service to our school. We need 3 parents (2 of whom are also business people) to fill the vacancies for next year. Fill out the application and return it by April 30 to the Eastvalley office. We will have elections in May. All parents (except those who only have 5th grade students) are eligible for election to School Council. The School Council meets once every 9 weeks to discuss issues of concern to Eastvalley. Please call me at 770-578-7214 if you have questions. We have had a little bit of everything this year and now it is time for some sunshine and warm weather! We celebrated our magnificent staff this month with a week of goodies and fun! Thank you to all of you who made such generous donations to let our staff know how much they are appreciated! With these donations we were able to give each staff member a gift, a gift card for some ice cream, an afternoon cookie break, donuts and coffee, and a delicious luncheon! We could not have done all of this without the help of some super businesses and partners in our community. Please help us thank these folks the next time you go in! Many thanks to: Kroger at Eastlake Saporito’s Panera Bread Company Zaxby’s Dunkin Donuts (new location at Piedmont & Roswell Rd) Coggins Shoes Chick-fil-A Our teachers and staff do such a great job every single day for and with our children. A fabulous resource to help your child prepare for the CRCT is CRCT Online from the Georgia Department of Education. Did you know that your child can take practice tests on the computer anywhere there is internet access? They have been practicing logging in and taking online tests in the computer lab with their class. In order to take these from home, go to www.eastvalleyelementary.com. On the left hand navigation bar under Resources is a link to CRCT Practice On Line. Click this link and it will take you to the site where they need to put in their 10 digit GTID number (if you don’t have this, you can get it from your child’s teacher) and the password is education. Make sure you don’t have pop-ups blocked and a new window will appear. Your child can choose either Student Tests or Teacher Assigned Tests. Both of these options have many tests in all subject areas for them to practice. After they have taken the test, they can then see which questions they missed as well as the standard in which the questions are from. With spring break the week before the CRCT, this is a great resource to use while on vacation to help keep your child’s brain focused on the upcoming test. I hope you will check it out! March 2010 Page students and faculty. Fabulous trips, sporting events, home décor items and personal service items will be up for bid!! Go to www.WheelerMagnetFoundation.com to purchase your tickets…$25 in advance, $30 at the door. Thanks for the Box Tops!! Thank you Eastvalley families for clipping and saving. School website: www.
