Join us for great seminars and the USPTA NorCal Touch Tennis Fall Classic. See pages 6 and 7 for more information. NorCal Profiles 2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow NorCal Professionals, I’ve always wondered what it takes to stay and to survive in this great business of ours. I’ve always thought of myself as a pro with many traits but a master of none. I have worked on private courts, in parks and rec, and now for the last 27 years in private clubs, one commercial and the current one, member owned. I am also fortunate to work around a lot of great USPTA pros in the Lamorinda area: Mark Orwig, Scott Borowiak, Gavin Havrilenko, Keith Wheeler, Patric Hermanson, Jim Coyne, Hunter Gallaway, Brian Thomas, Michael Wayman and Brent DeGroot. Listed are a few of my thoughts about what qualities we need to develop as pros. I’d love to hear from you about what you think. Passion for the game and coaching. This is a must. We don’t get rich at this profession so something must drive us. I always wanted to be a coach – my dad said I was crazy and couldn’t make a living with tennis. I proved him wrong about making a living but not sure about the other! People-oriented. We interact with people all the time. We must like being around others, and be flexible in dealing with all types of personalities. Passion for learning. We must update ourselves to the newest trends in the game as well as the latest technology to help us do our job. The USPTA website is full of educational material such as Coaches Resource Center, TennisResources.com and a great iPhone app, USPTA Tennis Tips. Divisional and World Conferences are another great opportunity to learn. Message: don’t get stale. The 2011 Fall NorCal USPTA Conference is coming on November 12 and 13. See the information in this newsletter or go to www.norcaluspta.com to view details and register. Programming! How do we get players playing more to grow the game? Programs: whether it be Friday Night Socials, junior mixers, club tournaments, junior and adult classes, team practices, or just pushing the USTA leagues for adults and juniors. One of the most successful events I ran at Moraga Tennis and Swim was Monday Night Team Tennis. As well as being competitive, it was social (centered on food and Monday Night Football). At Rancho, it’s Friday Night Mixed Socials (again friends and food). With USTA leagues dominating these days I think players want more social tennis activities that are fun. NorCal USPTA is offering a great Specialty Course on September 18 at the Claremont Resort on Creative Programming presented by Hans Römer – go to www.norcaluspta.com to sign up. Administration. Many pros just want to be on the court. I like the change of pace that comes with being creative off the court: answering and returning emails or phone calls, doing my book keeping, watching over existing programs or creating new ones, working with staff, or with member volunteers helping to grow our program. Serving as the President of NorCal USPTA has been very rewarding in both meeting the challenges and enjoying the creative efforts the board members bring to the table. Never before in history have so many independent research agencies recognized the healthy benefits of playing tennis. From social development to physical fitness and brain development to disease prevention, tennis tops all therapies and sports for wellness benefits! Playing tennis is one of the best sports/ activities for anti-aging. (Please see the website www.tennis-health.com “Reasons to Play Tennis” for exact details and specifics.) Having healthy people play tennis to maintain their wellness will reduce their insurance/healthcare costs. Plans are being developed to offer a complimentary 30 minute tennis lesson to all Kaiser Permanente health insurance clients through out the San Francisco Bay Area. This summer I sent out an email soliciting USPTA tennis professionals for this initiative. Eleven pros responded and we should have opportunities for more USPTA tennis professionals throughout the entire Bay Area. If you are interested and still want to take part in this innovative initiative email me at [email protected]. TOP FIVE “HEALTHY” REASONS TO PLAY TENNIS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The Timing Light for a ball machine allows this type of training. The 12th year of this high school tournament, the first seven years were for boys and the last five for girls. The format is one often used in Southern Cal CIF sections: round robin, three singles, three doubles. Each singles player plays each of the three singles players on the opponents’ teams for one set and the same for doubles. One point is awarded for each set won. This format will most likely soon be adopted by NorCal CIF in an attempt to create an official High School State Championship for California. The beauty of the format is there is no stacking and it can be much more socialized, and one sees more players per match. Ken Robinson reports, “Had a busy summer at Menlo Country Club with all the kids. Lots of energy, I wish I could bottle some of it. I’m still playing nationals and some locals. I'm teaching a limited amount of students on the side, as I feel it would be stretching it to take on more. I love the game and have been teaching off and on since starting the Foster City Tennis Club in 1974. Thanks to the above pros for sending their information. Here’s to a great fall for all! NorCal Profiles 17 SANTA CRUZMONTEREY Gay Finch [email protected] Fall is upon us and I hope everyone has had a productive summer. With fall comes the girls’ high school season. The area pros that are coaching are Wendy Grover, Stevenson School; Alice Cory, Notre Dame; Bill Scott, Santa Catalina; Judy Newman, Scotts Valley; Steve Striffler, Monte Vista Christian, and Gay and Bill Finch, St. Francis. Gay and Bill Finch completed their summer program of junior clinics and team tennis for the 26th year, having interclub matches with La Madrona, Jade Street, Rio Del Mar, Spanish Bay, and Stevenson School. Gay continues teaching and mentoring women, captaining USTA teams, and teaching cardio tennis. Hans Romer, at Monterey Tennis Center, coached a USTA boy’s and girl’s 14 zonal team in Colorado Springs to a gold medal for the first time. Coaching ninety matches in five days, Hans said “These kids showed great adaptability skills playing these matches at 7200 feet.” Hans will present a USPTA NorCal Specialty Course on September 18 on “Creative Programming” at the Claremont Resort from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Register at www.norcaluspta.com Wendy Grover taught tennis at the Stevenson School this past summer to students from around the globe. Top star Anna Romeka will lead this year’s team as they head to Clovis in September for the California High School Girls’ Tennis Championships. NorCal Profiles REDWOOD Rod Koehler [email protected] The College of the Siskiyous second yearly summer tennis camp for high school tennis players took place in June in Siskiyou County in the far northern Redwood region. Next came the 15th annual Alpine Doubles tournament in July, followed by the 16th annual Mount Shasta Hardcourt in August. College of the Siskiyous tennis classes got off to an early start in mid-August, and are being played on freshly resurfaced courts. Yreka will kick off its annual doubles tournament on October 1 with its infamous “Yreka Wire Rule” requiring a point to be replayed when a lob hits the telephone wire running over one of the courts. 18 Below: Rod Koehler presents plaque to 15-year-old Thunder Shaffer of Red Bluff after his marathon victory over 71-year-old Jon "Fergie" Ferguson of Chico in the Mt. Shasta Hardcourt 4.0 Singles. NorCal Profiles ALAMEDA Wendell Pierce [email protected] Hello to all. I hope this summer has been rewarding. My summer has been playful. As many of you know, I have been playing left-handed (due to a wrist injury). I have played in five tournaments and I won two of them. It has great to experience some match wins, after having played three tournaments last year and not having any! I defeated Russell Jilot 6-2, 6-2 in the finals of The Bert Robinson Seniors (55s) at Hidden Hills in Hayward, and the Foothill Swim and Tennis Club Seniors (55s) in Palo Alto. Excuse me for giving myself a big bravo!!! Speaking of Hidden Hills, Jason Beardslee did an excellent job organizing The Bert Robinson Tennis Tournament. In the past, this tournament was a premiere event in the city of Hayward, attracting players from all over the Bay Area. It is smaller now but the chemistry of the event is still there. It was wonderful to see Bert 19 Robinson (he played in the 80's division) and his wife, Betty. At Chabot Canyon Racquet Club, Steve Squire is keeping the members moving with high powered clinics and workshops. Each weekday evening there are clinics of some kind. Lynne Rolley has had a successful summer at the Berkeley Tennis Club, the summer junior program had fantastic enrollment. The courts were packed with youngsters. (Let's keep those kids loving tennis!!!) The Berkeley Tennis Club is having a farewell party and round-robin on September 11, for Andy Salonen. Andy was the head pro at the Berkeley Tennis Club for 15 years as well as manager and assistant manager. Carl Mendoza says things are going well at Bay-O-Vista. Carl recently had a 10-and-under drop-in clinic at the club. Peter Benko of Berkeley is looking to head down under to the Australian Open in 2012. NorCal Profiles 20 MARIN-SONOMA Audra Silman [email protected] David Johnson has energized and grown the tennis program built by Aaron Grant at Bay Club Ross Valley. Grant recently moved into the role as General Manager at SFTC and Johnson took over as Tennis Director at Bay Club Ross Valley. David worked as the junior development coach at Indian Wells Tennis Gardens (where BNP Paribas is played) and at Austin Country Club in Texas. We’re lucky to have David who brings his coaching skills acquired while working directly under world-renowned tennis coach Jose Higueras, along with much competitive playing experience. Besides providing the members at Mt. Tam with newly resurfaced indoor tennis courts, General Manager Rod Heckelman has authored two new books to benefit the entire tennis community. Playing Into the Sunset, published by www.TennisBoomers.net is an instructional manual for anyone over 35, especially seniors. It provides a path for players with goals of playing for the first time or improving an already established game. Tennisboomers.net has launched a revolutionary site that offers connectivity for the baby boom era players who seek partners, competition, and information about the game. Heckelman’s second manual, A Business Handbook for Tennis Pros is being distributed by the Tennis Industry Association. A work in progress, it is available for free on the TIA website and aims to furnish our tennis teaching pros with business skills so their programs can thrive even in the present economy. Jay Potter, General Manager of Belvedere Tennis Club, will put on a fundraising tournament for UC Berkeley’s tennis program on September 10. The Annual Cal Pro-Am will showcase top-notch college competitors on the Cal women’s and men’s teams at BTC. BTC also welcomes Jenno Morson as their new Assistant Professional. Morson will be taking over for Tony Delario, who left to accept the Director of Tennis position at the Petaluma Valley Athletic Club. Jenno was formerly at Scott Valley Swim and Racquet Club and was also the boy’s high school coach at Drake for two years. Morson played on the BTC Men’s 5.0 USTA team and is also the girl’s tennis coach at Branson High School. Marin Country Club Tennis Director Jerry Mehciz and his staff sent two of their summer teams to districts and coached another team to its third consecutive 6.5 Marin Twilight League title! With only 450 members in the golf and tennis club, the tennis program participation has grown enormously and MCC has nine teams lined up to compete in different leagues this fall! West County Tennis Association’s Tennis Director Richard Cardiff celebrated the 40th year running his summer camp this year in Sebastopol. Cardiff had over 175 registrants for his camp, and many of his students are secondgeneration attendees, whose parents were coached by Cardiff some 28 years ago! To achieve longevity, Cardiff explains his “winning formula” as fun, first and foremost; hyperactive drills that camouflage all the learning that’s happening on each court rotation, and his invaluable assistants who often work for each summer from high school through college. Cardiff has created a tennis program that goes beyond structured tennis teaching to one that has brought people together and formed lifelong relationships! Besides running this program Cardiff has organized 11 USTA teams that will compete this fall in the West County Tennis Association and he is the sectional head verifier for USTA Northern California. Tiburon Peninsula Club Tennis Director Scott Potthast has been very busy organizing the RBC Tiburon Challenger which will take place October 8-16. The prize money has been doubled from $50,000 to $100,000 after partnering with the First Republic Bank. This ATP tournament has attracted some of the up and coming players and is certain to be an amazing show for all tennis fans! Tennis enthusiasts get to experience the excitement and competition of the USTA Pro circuit right here in our own backyard! NorCal Profiles 21 NAPA/SOLANO Mark Hansen [email protected] I hope all of you had a productive and profitable summer! Here is a small sample of what some of the pros in our area are doing: Stephanee Lawrence had a great summer as Director of Tennis for Camp Romaca in Massachusetts. Stephanee had two pros from England on her staff to help with over 230 girls in attendance. The camp used the QuickStart program with great success for the 10-and-under girls. Stephanee made the semi finals in the Senior event in Berkeley and is now coaching the Napa High girl’s team along with her private lessons. Sam Levy is happy to be back at Sonoma Valley Tennis Association after a summer of being “mister mom”. Sam has a QuickStart junior program, men’s and women’s league practices and private lessons going strong at Maxwell Park. Sam is also running a junior tournament this fall in conjunction with the Gorin Tennis Academy. I had a busy summer of junior tennis camps and adult leagues. This fall I am planning on having a QuickStart/USTA junior tennis league. On October 7, in conjunction with USTA NorCal and KGO television we are running a “Finny’s Free Friday” junior tennis event. On October 21, I’ll host a Girl Scout Tennis Carnival. I hope that all of you going to the National Convention learn lots and have a great time. NorCal Profiles 22 SAN FRANCISCO Jason Blum [email protected] On Thursday, August 26, Mike Barrell from the U.K. gave a 10-and-under tennis training at the San Francisco Tennis Club. The event was organized by USTA Northern California. Several NorCal USPTA pros attended as well as the NorCal USTA staff. A few weeks prior to Mike Barrell’s training, Todd Dissly from Los Gatos also gave a 10-andunder tennis training on Sunday, August 14. About a dozen NorCal USPTA pros turned out for the event at SFTC. The San Francisco Tennis Club has been designated an official USTA 10-and-under training facility. Ana took part in a question-and-answer session with former WTA pro Peanut Louie Harper and author Steve Jamison to discuss the concept of success with children and their parents: Giving your best every day is the only thing you can ask from yourself. Eventually you will bring out the best in yourself and your potential. Everyone of us has some kind of potential and something that is great. Only by applying yourself every day can you achieve that potential. On semi-final day of the BOW tournament, Harper for Kids hosted its Inch & Miles Sportsmanship Tennis Festival for approximately 50 kids. Harper for Kids Executive Director Tim Harper, along with NCAA champion and WTA pro Lilia Osterloh, talked to the kids about Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success and the importance of good sportsmanship. Weather was great with only a few triple digit days. During three hot days in August, the Brenda Athletic Club in Modesto held the 49th Annual Modesto Open. Prize money was $2,500 and the men’s and women’s draws were packed with well over 100 players participating. Both of the men’s finalists had long semifinal matches with the first sets lasting one hour and forty-five minutes and ending at 7-6. Then each fought hard to win tough second sets without going to tie breaks. In the finals, we had a senior player versus a player 20 years younger. It was a well played match, with the senior (experienced) player winning. Jan Tiilikainen , a previous winner, defeated nineteen year old, Eugene Muchynski. The first time Jan won was in 1998, the year his opponent Eugene was only six years old. It was nice that Santa Clara University had three players recruited from Northern California who made it to the finals: two women and one young man. Brenda Athletic Club Modesto Sport head pro and Director of Tennis, Mark Fairchilds was very happy about the tournament. Now, Mark is planning his annual member-guest tournament in October, women’s leagues and fall men’s and mixed leagues. Many thanks to Paul Garron for providing his knowledge about 10-and-under tennis at a clinic for our club in July. USPTA pro Bill Weber is keeping busy in Turlock and Oakdale teaching for their recreation departments. 23 Congrats to USPTA pro Justin Yarbrough for winning the 5.5 men’s singles tournament in Manteca. Del Rio pro Mark Weir’s grass court tennis focused on mixed doubles and men’s doubles exhibition matches this year. Mark took his juniors on tour to the northwest to Oregon for a long week of tennis for the 32nd straight year. Now, he is preparing for his fall activities with junior clinics, women’s league teams, junior twilight doubles and the annual charity tournament for the Children’s Crisis Center, called “Swing for the Kids.” My recovery from hip replacement surgery in May was slowed down by a blood clot. But, I am eager to get back out on the court! Phong Le, our USPTA pro who was badly injured in a motorcycle accident, is still recovering. Wow! Steve Tiffin has become a grandpa again, this time to Parker Diane. His new granddaughter was born on August 25, on Grandpa Steve’s birthday. What a nice birthday present! Don Purdy, head pro at Manteca Tennis Center and Modesto’s Graceada Park, was busy at both locations running camps in the morning and afternoon! During the fall, Don will run his usual clinics but will add a camp for player development in Manteca. Don put a few miles on his car this summer! His sidekick Gary Heil was busy in Lathrop and moved into Tracy where he had a very successful summer doing camps. Remember, the Fall Conference is November 12 and 13 and will be held in Sacramento! See you there! NorCal Profiles 24 TAHOE-RENO Christy Funk [email protected] Summer in the high desert and the Sierra Nevada Mountains has been great.
