History

Portugal’s first king was D. Afonso Henriques.
In 1755, an earthquake and fire destroyed Lisbon
and the entire city had to be reconstructed.

Emergencies:
If you are lost or in trouble, policemen in Portugal
are called Polícia.
They wear dark blue uniforms with Polícia written
on the back. They also often wear a bright green
jacket, this will also have Polícia written on the

If you want to use buses and subway is better that
you buy the Viva Viagem Card.
The Viva viagem card is an electronic card that
is validated by approaching the card to the
contactless validators; it is reloadable and specially
designed for tourists.
PRICES
The Viva viagem card costs 0.50 € and can be
reloaded unlimitedly during one year after
purchase.
The following tickets can be loaded in the Viva
viagem card for use in the:
• Bus/Subway single ticket
• 1 day ticket Bus/Subway

There is tourist info on places, like what there is to
see, little bit of history.
Take the bus number 28 and get off near the Castle.
1. St. George´s Castle (Castelo São Jorge) - with
your back to the castle´s exit gates, walk down the
Chão da Feira Street (Rua do Chão da Feira) and
pass the red gate of the Belmonte Palace (Palácio
Belmonte).
Continue straight down to the street of the ruins.
Turn right at the Beco do Maldonado Street (Rua
do Beco do Maldonado), and go down the stairs.
Walk to the Sun Gates Square (Largo das Portas do
Sol) and admire the beautiful scenery of the city of
Lisbon from this site.

2. Sun Gates (Portas do Sol) – back to the view,
turn left and go down to find a small garden on the
left.
You have just arrived at the Santa Luzia viewpoint.
3. Santa Luzía Viewpoint – back to the viewpoint
turn left and down, following the tram rails to the
Cathedral Square. Facing the plate, on the left side,
is Lisbon´s Cathedral.

4. Lisbon Cathedral - back to the cathedral,
continue on the left side of the ride.

Walk down to the Santo António da Sé Street (Rua
de Santo António da Sé).

Continue straight (notice that you will find a church
on the left) and cross the road to the Conceição
Street (Rua da Conceição).
Walking down the Conceição Street (Rua da
Conceição) and turn left into the Prata Street (Rua
da Prata).
Continue ahead, now within view of the Tagus River
(Rio Tejo) in the background.
At the end of the Prata Street (Rua da Prata), you
arrive at Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio).

5. Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio) - In the
centre of the square you can see a very old statue
of our king José riding on a horse that is trampling
a lot of snakes.
Across the road near the river you can visit the
old wharf of Lisbon, the Pier Columns (Cais das
Colunas).
6. Pier Columns (Cais das Colunas) - along the river
you can see the South Rim and Christ the King.
With your back to the pier, cross the road again.
Continue straight, crossing the Commerce Square
(Praça do Comércio).
Facing the triumphal arch (Arco do Triunfo) that
opens to the Augusta Street (Rua Augusta), cross
the road and pass the arch to go to the Augusta
Street (Rua Augusta).

7. Walking Downtown Lisbon - continue straight
along Augusta Street (Rua Augusta) to find Santa
Justa Street (Rua de Santa Justa) on the left.
Enjoy a ride on this famous lift and the view across
the old part of the city.
Go up the stone stairs and turn left onto the Carmo
Street (Rua do Carmo) until you reach a crossroad
with the Garret Street (Rua Garret), (doors of the
shopping center Warehouses Chiado).
With your back to the doors of the mall, go
up Garret Street (Rua Garret), past the church
of Chiado, towards the Restaurant / Café “A
Brasileira”, taking the opportunity to see the statue
of the famous Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa.
Cross the road to Camões Square (Largo Camões).

8. Camões Square (Largo Camões) - climb the
Misericordia Street (Rua da Misericordia), continue
on the São Pedro de Alcântara Street (Rua de São
Pedro de Alcântara), to the viewpoint named São
Pedro de Alcântara.
9. São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint - enjoy the
fantastic view of the city and grab a bite to eat at
the cafe Lost In, in Principe Real, or in the Royal
Prince´s Garden (Jardim do Príncipe Real).

With the help of sightseeing or tram 15 you can
arrive at Belém.
You also have the Bus lines to get to Belém such as
714, 727, 728, 729, 751.

1. Hop off the tram at the tram stop near the Coach
Museum, visit the museum.
At the exit, back to the main gate, turn right and go
up to Belém pastry house where you can eat the
most famous Portuguese custard pastries.
At the exit, back to the door of crayons, turn right
and follow the signs to the Monastery.

2. Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos),
visit the Monastery. At the front door, your back to
the monastery, turn right towards the Planetarium
/ Museum of the Navy (Planetário/Museu da
Marinha), crossing in front of the giant Belém
Cultural Centre (CCB), (which you can visit for free).
This modern building is also a monument to the
Portuguese discoveries to pay tribute to Portugal`s
great seafaring heroes.
Continue straight until you find the underground
passage level that leads you to a startling sight
- the very very old Monument to the Discoveries
(Padrão dos Descobrimentos)

3. Monument to the Discoveries, back to the
Monument, turn left towards the Marina, past the
line of restaurants (take a break for lunch) and
go straight on to the gardens of the Belém Tower
(Torre de Belém).
