LENA GAL 0 From my heart I thank Mariana Inverno for all her support. I feel honoured to belong to the Art for All Project. Her support and drive have been, for me, a balsam during times of difficulty, doubt and insecurity. The way in which she sees art and the artist makes her special, a rarity amongst those who deal with artists. In particular I thank her for her interest from the start, in my dream to bring this book into reality. I also wish to thank those who over the past twenty years have written impartially for catalogues concerning my work, especially the journalist Maria Augusta Silva. Not least, I offer my thanks to the Municipality of Cascais, whose patronage has contributed so greatly to the fruition of this dream. Mariana Inverno Fundadora do Projecto Art for All 011 Lena Gal Mulheres Terra Mãe | Mother Earth Women Preface Woman Mother Earth 20 Years of Lena Gal’s Painting R unning with the inner eye through Lena Gal’s fascinating work constitutes a dive into the inexhaustible river of mysteries represented by women and their ancestral heritage. Even in her personal course this artist embodies the multiple faces of the feminine subjected to the cultural perversions created by the patriarchal era which can only be altered truly by a profound work on identifying the beliefs hidden in the depths of the subconscious. I would say that it is this evolutionary and ascending movement that we witness in Gal’s work. Her early years as an artist reflect a search for a personal style. The feminine figures are, however, present from the start. And, very early on, Lena Gal shows us that she has discovered the modus faciendi of her work, be it technically or thematically. Her soul’s expressed wounds take shape through the first static women, roughly hewn, stiff, although poetically framed in their respective environments. One hears the cry of the trapped feminine soul, nostalgia, longing, attendance, enigma and mystery in the titles of the paintings. It is not a cry of despair, for there is no giving up on the dream (“The Bag of Dreams”, 1999). “The Shawl of Longing”, a work from 2000, begins to point in the direction of that lost feminine, for within is a face, hidden by the shawl 012 and the white hands of a woman who appears to be crying that pain which the Portuguese call ‘longing’. In the realm of colour, this artist’s work is to be found between the blues of sky and sea and the ochre of the land, references of insular imagination. Despite being fettered, the lives of women demand to be sung so that they become self-conscious and can transcend themselves. From 2002 onward, these women effectively begin to break free (“Transmutation”, 2002). Then in rapid progression show their hair and their arms and legs, which can only originate in a dream of transformation in liberating movements from which only the transmuting dream gives origin. There appears a magical foretelling of flying in the wavy hair, raised like wings on either side of the faces animated by a new expression (“The Nymphs”, 2004; “The Land of Scented Breezes”, 2005). The coming closer to and identification with Mother Earth are increasing. The rediscovered power expresses itself more and more until it reaches celebratory heights in that work suspended between heaven and earth which is “Encounter with the Goddess” (2007). There are no longer any limits. Women ostentatiously lie with the Moon (“Sleeping with The Moon”, 2007), thus claiming their true nature in a movement of sensual and almost spasmodic abandonment to the energy of the Moon. Women take on their bewitching mastery in a defiant and modern figure (“The Witch of the Silver Gaze”, 2007) and their access to the ancient healing codes (“The Healers”, 2007). And so, in Gal’s work, women release themselves from that which enslaves them, they are birds, the turbulent land, perfume of the cornfields, doves and moonlight. They are re-born into their ancestral dominions, dance with wolves (“Dance with a Wolf ”, 2007), and re-create themselves as guardians of the Holy Grail (“Guardians of the Grail”, 2007). Meeting the great Bolivian painter, Fernando Montes, who passed away in 2007, gave Gal an impulse toward Shamanism. This is already clearly visible in “The Meaning of Silence” (2008), a work in memoriam of Montes. One would say that, as from this influence, Gal’s women move into a more mature stage for they have reclaimed and assumed again their longforgotten powers. They definitively let go of their asphyxiating and cloistered state. In “The Shamans” (2008), we see confident women, their loose hair dancing in the wind, draped anew in the long robes of the priestess, the wise woman, imposing themselves per se in a diffused and watery scenario. Only the white dove of the Holy Spirit flies between them and their gestures like a messenger, confirming the promise of a different and re-structured future. This is also the spirit underlying the work “Magic Flies on the Wings of the Wind” (2008), where the previous scenario is intensified and gains strength as the group closes in. The postures are richer and more complementary, the wings multiply and consequentially so does the length of the flight. The great contribution of this work, expansive of our consciousness, lies in the fact that it holds firm to real women and their attempt to restore sensuality, source of power and self-discovery in a framework of innocence and great poetic beauty. Well or badly drawn, fat or slim, incarcerated by others in spaces and deliberate concepts, or gradually freeing themselves from that which impedes plenitude, these women who are earth and mother, who suffer and dream and express themselves with the elements, are a guarantee of the return of the natural feminine powers, lost in time in the darkness of memory. They somewhat promise a return to true consciousness of the feminine identity and those powers associated with her, without masks and manipulations deviant of an ascending path. Mariana Inverno Founder of the Art for All Project 013 Lena Gal Mulheres Terra Mãe | Mother Earth Women Introdução | introduction Women of the Mist Mulheres das Brumas N as brumas, elas são as formas quase indiferenciadas do ar. Mariana inverno Fundadora do Projecto Art for All in catálogo Mulheres das Brumas - exposição S. Miguel, Açores T hrough the mist they are forms almost indistinguishable from the air. They move as murmurings, mobile statues emerging from the pulsating earth. Their dance is illusory and remote in the density of the fog, uniting air, water and fire. Everything from afar, like a poetic sketch preceding the revelation we apparently await. All occurs and all moves between them and the earth. Rooted in the trembling ground, they climb mountains of pain and sing the life that breeds in their wombs. They comfort the crying soul with the wayside flowers, the scent of the air, the skin of the child, still only their own, the soothing prayer. All is prelude. There is something in the air, forebodings, suggested footsteps; foretelling of things to come, the womb opening, the weeping waters. In these women to whom the fog permits allusion, their travel impressions as old as the rocks, millennial secrets, streaks of dreams, cantatas of blood and pain, destruction and life, and gestures of love through the coming dawn. They come and go in the mist. Mothers, daughters, daughters, mothers, in a tapestry of eternal beginnings. Embroidered in the blue breeze by the hand of the Goddess, they walk in the aridity as a divine breath, a major note, concordant with earth and sea, aspiring to the heavens, women with half open wings, women who are ready, so ready to fly… Mariana inverno Founder of the Art for All Project in Catalogue: ‘Women of the Mist’ - Exhibition in São Miguel, Azores 015 Lena Gal Mulheres Terra Mãe | Mother Earth Women Lena Gal N asci ao embalar do mar, na ilha feminina, majestosa, deusa da bruma. I * was born lulled and rocked by the sea, on the Feminine Island, majestic goddess of the mist. On that Island I walked barefoot in the wheat fields, running alongside the wind, and playing with rain water, I made dolls with mud and wandered in the caves, I rolled down the mountains, counted the stars, fell in love with the moon and warmed myself in the sun. From the women in black shawls with scarves and hair in the wind, I absorbed stories of mysteries, dreams and journeys. We had our friends’ get-togethers, organised picnics, games, there was laughter and secrets. I played in the scent of the firewood and hot bread, in the surging seas and wet soil, in the sound of the waves on the seagulls’ rocks and hearing the cockerel’s crow. In the silence of the night, to the sound of crickets, there appeared words in my mind and I wrote poems, I drew feminine faces with crayons. I learned to love on this Island, to cry, to suffer and experience loneliness, inequality and disquiet. I left the Island but brought her with me, she’s in my heart and my deepest memories, in my history. She is on the paths of my imagination, the mysteries, the search between homesickness and nostalgia. My memories submerge in my consciousness, surfacing as emotions on canvas, as tenderness and thoughts. A painting is my refuge, that magical place where I go in my entirety, a space for the my sacred universe and my restlessness to manifest themselves. Painting is for me, a necessity far deeper than a mere desire for recognition. It is the healing of something lost, something which brought doubts and anxieties to the surface, the anticipation ofchanges and the revealing of that which wishes to remain hidden – it is the growing as a person and being in harmony with nature. It is the aim of my painting to awaken feelings and to share complicity and affinities where the light transfigures through the discovery of the goddesses within each woman – and where my message with colour and form is to create the emergence of the feminine in women and men and the uniting of humanity. The women in my paintings embody the feminine Archetype of the Great Mother, the Eternal Feminine of God, and revere the female principles man/woman. These women are, after all, the ones we have in our hearts and our lives, mother, sister, friend, daughter, granddaughter, supportive women, wise women, poets, artists, heroines, Liliths, Eves, ugly, beautiful, fat, thin, young and old, passionate women with a propensity for dreams and inexplicable sadness, priestesses, shamans, therapists… these are the Women of Mother Earth. Pintou marinhas, paisagens, casarios, figuras diversas, crianças, homens, as ceifeiras. Lena has always been an artist and began her career aged fifteen with poetry and regional themes in collaboration with Azorean newspapers; she drew feminine faces in charcoal and crayon. In 1978 she goes to Lisbon and continues drawing with charcoal and dry pastels. On visiting exhibitions and seeing the works of Graça Morais she experiences a strong desire to paint. In 1986 she attends the Cooperative of Portuguese Engravers and meets the painter José Júlio, and for a short while frequents his studio and in 1988 the Society of Fine Arts and of Arco. She does, however, consider herself self-taught. Besides using canvas and paper she also dedicated her time to studying traditional techniques of embossing on leather with Master José Guerra in Sintra for two years, thus creating her own artistic and pictorial philosophy, painting it on hide, and restoring and re-creating old artisan items. For five years she sought her personal path. She painted seascapes, landscapes, groups of houses, various figures, children, men and women reapers. In 1990 she befriended naif artists Luiza Caetano, Edna Araraguara, Zé Cordeiro Ló, Fernanda Mourão, and later gets to know the painters Mário Vinte e Um, critic and artist 022 Edgardo Xavier, Maria Almira Medina, Ernesto Neves, Luís Vieira-Baptista, Pé Leve, Artur Bual, Fernanda Páscoa, Eduardo Nascimento, Felippa Lobato, Alfredo Luz and the sculptor Rogério Timóteo, among many others. In 1996 she begins painting from a deeper inner space, subconsciously drawing the women within onto the canvas. She took part in innumerable pedagogic activities, of which animated expression in preparatory schools and groups of extra-curricular activities stand out. Lena Gal was a monitor for the programme “Artes e Ofícios” (Arts and Crafts), part of the Socio-Educational Project for the Education Department of the Municipality of Lisbon. She was also invited to help teach about Art and Leather at Durfee High School, Bishop Connelly High School and the University of South Carolina in Spartanburg, USA. The artist organised various exhibitions including the International Exhibition “The Emotion of Painting” in Espaço Santa Catarina (Lisbon) in 2004 and the International Exhibition “Art for Peace” in 2008 at the Legislative Assembly for the Autonomous Region of the Azores in the city of Horta. She is a member of the artistic circle of Artur Bual in Amadora. In 2005 she became an Associate Artist of the Art for All Project. Soa-me a grande troféu. LG – Em voz alta, precisamente. Faz-me confusão ter gente à minha volta, parece-me que a qualquer momento me podem interromper, dizer coisas. Não 027 Lena Gal Mulheres Terra Mãe | Mother Earth Women Mariana Inverno talks to Lena Gal On the occasion of the ‘Women Mother Earth’ Exhibition October-November 2005 me sinto à vontade. Hoje, parece-me que as mulheres puramente feministas andam perdidas. MI – Esta é a sua primeira exposição com o Projecto Art for All. The gaze of the inner child blooms frequently on her open and smiling face. She speaks sincerely, demonstrating a simplicity altogether rare these days. From her place of origin there lingers in her earthly memory a capacity to dream and access new worlds. Women, as direct representatives of the feminine on Earth, fascinate her, and so, since early school days, she drew them, unconsciously searching for the true face of the woman within, a creative act which leads to the unfoldment of consciousness. She paints women in these tonalities, as they are the colour of inner earth… they are the women amongst whom she lived as a child in the Azores, and who, little by little, released themselves within her. They have gradually assumed their own course, breathing independently, sensual, innocent and very feminine. Moving like the Earth, their Mother. MARIANA INVERNO – How did it all begin? LENA GAL – Painting has always existed within me ever since those school days and first crayons. I remember one of my drawings was remarked on by the teachers. At that time I was very young and naïve and couldn’t understand why my work had been the cause of such attention. I even feared it might be bad. The brushes and canvasses only came much later when I was about twenty years old. MI – You are a woman and a painter, you paint women and their universes at a time when the feminine breaks free, exceeding the limits imposed by the existing order. I should like to hear about the energy behind your work. LG – My painting and my women haven’t always been free and sensual. At first they were timid and their evolution has to do with my own, with my personal process of self liberation, with all that I have been discovering within me. I should like to feel that this liberation also took place with the women I knew in the earlier days of my life. MI – So these women speak of you, your soul, your ever-expanding consciousness… LG – Exactly. MI – What is the role you see your creativity playing in the society you belong to? LG –As I said, the women I paint today are free and sensual. That is my desire for women in general. Women who know who they are; free, free as birds. MI – You are from the Azores which many see as the lost remains of Atlantis… The Islands of the Azores, fertile with creative people – are they women, too? LG – Yes, the islands are women, I sense their energy. I was there recently and re-lived an enriching experience in contact with that land. Having grown up in that environment has made me different. I thank my parents who always allowed me the liberty of that direct connection with the earth. MI – That’s an important message for the world – whose decadent society is connected to disrespect and abuse of the earth. There exists a corresponding ethic in the manner of treatment of woman, used and abused and above all denied her ancestral heritage. LG – That’s the reason for wishing that women today and everywhere should have that same freedom conferred on them as those on my canvasses, and above all on my home Island. I retain memories of those concealed women, black shawls, many of them embroiderers, sitting at windows working, with their eyes lost on the horizon. They were totally under the thumbs of their parents and communities at large. Today this is somewhat different but there remains a long way to go. 029 Lena Gal Mulheres Terra Mãe | Mother Earth Women MI – These women were unaware of their sensuality… LG –Very little. It was all channelled to the children. Remember, sensuality was linked to sin, and the church was very controlling. I myself was removed from the church on three occasions. MI – In a recent text you stated that you paint alone. Is that circumstantial or a personal necessity? LG – A personal necessity. I love being alone with my canvasses, analysing them, sensing intimacy and talking with them. MI – Tell me about it – it feels like a triumph. LG – On all occasions I felt deeply hurt. The first time I was fifteen and wearing trousers. The priest said ‘That girl over there, please leave the church’. I left humiliated with a thousand eyes watching me. Another time I was out because I refused to wear a veil. But the worst was the third occasion. I was a single mother and one day, I was about twenty, and preparing to receive Holy Communion, the priest refused, saying I wasn’t worthy and would I please leave. MI – Aloud? LG – Yes, precisely. I sense confusion with people around me, I feel they may interrupt me at any time, say things. I don’t feel at ease. MI – Is that why you left the Island? LG – Partly. My girlfriends stopped speaking to me after that incident, forbidden by their parents – to them I was a sinner. MI – You say you are feminine rather than feminist… LG – Indeed, I am even part of the Women’s Democratic Movement. I am not a feminist in the sense of political feminism, of involving myself in radical public struggles because as a friend of ours says ‘it is necessary to free the inner woman in order to help free others’. Nonetheless, I hold nothing against those movements or their achievements past and future – rather more, the Rights of Women. I am not a feminine activist in the literal sense. I don’t know if I am making myself clear… MI – You come from a certain world and yet, on the canvas, today, you project the opposite of that which you experienced socially and ideologically. You used the earth energy and your capacity to dream, transmuting a narrow vision into an ever-growing liberation of sight and feeling. LG – In my youth I felt free, I always sensed an inner and latent creativity. I could never understand why I was censured for laughing, for observing. After coming here I began releasing those shackles and acquired more knowledge which is visible on my canvasses. MI – Perfectly. I recognise the crucial importance of certain historical victories for women, even for their chosen paths. I believe we have reached a point where it is not important to be feminist but rather to understand the role of Femininity. Woman should be a clear and direct representative of that feminine – isn’t that so? LG – I think that maybe there should be another sort of Women’s Movement, a movement that would transmit a Woman’s language as a human being, of her inner freedom, of her feminine being, and what she can represent to the world and to society, in a 030 clarification of herself as she stands. It is not only relevant to be radical and to fight for the rights of women workers. In my view, it would be important that there was a movement that would join these two aspects. Today, I feel that women who are purely feminist are a bit lost. MI – This is your first Exhibition with the Art for All Project. Why did you adhere to this Project? Another important aspect is the ego. There are many who say we need to get rid of our ego. That is not my belief. We cannot live without it – it is an important regulatory aspect. But it must be contained within certain parameters and not allowed to attain excessive relevance. MI – Specifically, relative to Portuguese women, would you care to leave an important message? LG – The fundamental issue would be to look in the mirror, but look deeply and courageously and initiate the process of real and lasting liberation. Many women consider themselves to be free but are not, they limit themselves to mimicking men in their day-to-day actions. Landscapes involve 032 these figures without decreasing their relevance, panoramas which, to the contrary, accentuate the poetry of those women. These canvasses are almost animated, figures heavy with symbolism who communicate with the delicate and serene gestures of their hands, and above all through a shared look, which combined with the facial expressions, almost devastate everything around them. These are canvasses which transform the figurative element into free-floating sentences of a deeply felt poem. Dulce Matos Cais de Culturas Presidente * Woman and Island f the multiplicity of aspects which confront us in Lena Gal’s work, the most outstanding is the Feminine Universe. The artist could have restricted herself to a portrayal of faces and women’s bodies with the sole objective of impressing us with her fascination for colour. But she goes far beyond that: she conveys an extraordinary pressure which leads us to cross-examination and leaves us in a state of profound disquiet. The vast gallery of female types revealed in her paintings indicate at the same time a tendency to place Woman in Nature, establishing an intimate dialogue between the two, a type of subtle and accusatory complicity of intervention and disenchantment, of the bitterness of Woman in society. This reading is surely related to the fact that the artist was born and lived her childhood on an island, the Island of São Miguel. The chromatic magic of her pallet discovers there an inexhaustible source: the browns of the earth, the dazzling greens of a luxuriant flora, the blues of sea and sky, are all faithfully and impressively transcribed onto her canvasses. Equally portrayed are the isolation, both earthly and spiritual, the frustration and apparent passivity of the Azorean woman. These “roots”, so well developed by Lena Gal, surely lead us to say that she carries the Island within herself. The pictorial space understood as soil and sky, as limit and reason, as path and aesthetics, re-invents itself to the discovery of colours, heats itself in the ochre, decorates itself in the symbolism of the often static figures, and weaves a language which Lena Gal has uprooted through her day-to-day life and definition of her art. This artist arms herself with gestures and will on a level of maturity and senses, evidence hidden in the female bodies, like goal posts of truth and charm, of fights directed to the justice of being and existing where liberty demands, and where emotions and winds cease. With roots evocative of an original loneliness and insularity, Lena Gal’s paintings allude to a life of multiple conquests. It is her rich world that permits a creativity of all things that she illuminates through the colours in her extraordinarily beautiful art. It is the gesture of an expressive language, not always defined by line but imagined. This is the advantage of this painter, when her soul, multi-faceted through experience, gains strength, grabs onto talent and reaches into memory which flows through into the coloured message, offering to others the desire to travel through the figures, the lands, the muted tones which poets extol through the freedom they assume. There is an Island which surges from her soul and expands universally in her pictorial language, there are reasons for the colour and light which transfigure, as in a dream slowly discovered in the truth of who she is as an artist. Evidently art school served as a basis, but Lena Gal flees from the world of academia to invent a real world, creating those imaginary paths which her mind peoples with so many things. The eyes of the women she paints contain mysteries and inexplicable longing for the seas of her Island – São Miguel. Her work is an exaltation of “Earth bodies in Dream-time”. Maybe the Island is to blame for her success, as the Atlantic created her disquiet and her dream – it was the starting point for her work which has travelled the world like a unifying link of territories and art. She sought to portray herself through her pictorial art, essentially transmitting a rich inner world. One senses that this artist speaks to the outer world through ‘the painter’ as well as through a profound need to communicate freely. Truth to tell, art is the hand, writing of life. We remember what we do, but sometimes unconsciously. Her work aims at reflecting on her personal time through the emergence of the feminine figures floating in their own space. Here is a course running alongside a mental voyage. As a dreaming imagination. It is a continual perambulation. 039 Lena Gal Mulheres Terra Mãe | Mother Earth Women Críticas | Critiques And it is in this enchanting and dis-enchanting continuum that Lena Gal sees herself bewitched. Art is truly communication when the latter becomes an artistic object, as it manifests and transforms itself. Her every journey may be a return to a source of inspiration, an appeal from the past. The contemplation of something may stir the artist to doing something ‘other’. Often, references of something already seen as retained within, emerges in a painting unnoticed. And, as there exist amongst the paintings many similarities, an actual work may awaken memories of others. It can be said that this is a truly complex mental exercise. The artist’s place of birth may in this case be the launch pad for her inspiration, yet also serve as a pretext for her sincerity and her conviction in seeking creativity. Hers is a strictly iconographical plan and in this sense it is a creation and succession of images, however, as such also an existing practice. This signifies that Lena left the Islands but deep down never did or will so completely. There is in her painting strong and dense markings of a double isolation. Firstly connected to the inherent spirit is the fact of being surrounded by an island and on the other hand, distant, by being far from the centre of that said island; an intense manner in which to be enclosed… In other words, Lena retrieves her memories and projects them in their entirety, some connected, sometimes painfully, to her childhood, in a mix and confusion of feelings; as if her past were merely a powerful memory, 040 both spiritual and latent, oft-times denied and now converted into potential imagination. All nature fascinates her through its enclosed mysteries and perhaps also due to its immortality. Her painting does not disconnect itself from the figurative despite turning away from realist figuration, both descriptive and chronicled; however, a certain logical and narrative theme subsists, bringing into being coherent within her visual proposals of referential discourse. In this way she breaks with conventional modes of representation. Contextually the painter tends not to flee from the figurative, yet it is transformed; a permanent transfiguration, in a reality and world of her own. The human form becomes the central theme but acting as a pretext for the exercise of painting and drawing. In so doing, figures and bodies become structured with a strong tendency to capture moments which for the artist are unforgettable. Lena reminds us that we are made up of something called “feeling” and that through this constant and sensitive proximity the vision we are offered is as immanence. The artist’s picturesque approach to reality does not restrict itself solely to the “visual” but to the sensory and tactile. Formally, we may place a part of her work into the present tendencies of the Neo-Expressionist… Stephen Oliver Departamento de Educação The RISD Museum, EUA Março 2001 I * am honoured to welcome Lena Gal, a very accomplished artist from Portugal to our community of Providence, Rhode Island. Today we are able to view collectively, a series of poems rendered in the beautiful colors and spirit of her native land, which the artist calls “Suspended Universe”. Ms. Gal’s paintings capture moments that allow us to enter her country as well as the world of her own reflections as artist and woman. Suspended Universe first captured my fascination with its colors, then began to articulate the deep connection that the people of Portugal have with their land. The skilful and pervasive pallet intimately connects those portrayed in these works with not only the landscape, but interior space as well. This technique creates the “Universe” in which we see the character of the people, more specifically women, of Portugal. Their tradition, strength, longings, and dreams are all rendered against scenes that represent the different quadrants of their country. In this universe Lena Gal has suspended moments of both reflection and revelation. Within this work are reflections that show us the dreams of a young girl, the potential behind the quiet strength of a young woman in the countryside, the longings of the city woman, and the wisdom of an old woman. Revelations, a suspended moment where life may be altered, come to each of these women and also men in various forma. Many times, revelation comes as white light in the form of a portal, a clock or human figure. Other times revelation comes in the form of 045 Lena Gal Mulheres Terra Mãe | Mother Earth Women Críticas | Critiques orange vapour as a woman is overtaken by the love of music and still times it comes in the form of an animal or a completely transfigured setting. With these varied images, the artist draws attention to not only the exterior and interior life of Portuguese women but also the radiance of each human being, a more universal message. For her powerful insights we should be grateful to Lena Gal. She has come from the Island of San Miguel, a place where the wind, sand and limitless horizon puts time in a different light and undoubtedly helped mature this great artist’s insights. By bringing her glowing vision into the midst of our cold and mostly grey New England winter, she exhorts us to see life in a different light, to slow down and recognize the beauty and potential within and without ourselves. By placing ourselves in the moment we invite internal reflections as well as external revelations to alter our lives and thus we see, like the artist, the universe in a different light. Vasco Hogan Teves Jornalista da RTP-Radio televisão Portuguesa 1997 L * ena Gal’s painting is as a stain of silent complicity, spilling into form and fertile with colour. Observing what she paints with life’s most vibrant colours, we see exactly that – women and men, trees and houses, fragments of landscapes halted in time yet waiting for it to pass. From a partially open, imaginary window is viewed a serene landscape, gestures, like poses, obsessive and stilled as in meditation we observe foam and tides of tranquillity; an acquired gift, product of watching the sea, one born, like GAL, on a big island in the middle of an ocean. An intrinsic force exists in this artists’ work, one emanating from her small and enclosed world, earth on water, coming and going, damp breath enclosing the forest, uncontrolled waves eroding cliffs. Wandering throughout are fleeting images, instilling life with a sense of humanity and transcendence. These are the indispensable reality and soul without which the artist, like any other creator, cannot dispense, in making her work more temporal. Shadows, even storms, earthly rumbling drizzled with salt and spray, are the ancestral burden. Sometimes little, other times more of this she engraves on leather, later to add colour with unexpected strips of light. And so, the artist offers herself to newly discovered worlds, travelling her journey of anxiety and hopes without severing herself from her roots. Her new Universe, beyond the sea, invaded by another roaring, glorified by man’s encounter with nature under a sun, creator of colours which warm the high-noon, giving LENA GAL’s painting a magical and, above all, sublime touch of poetry. I sense thirst seeing you from afar. Your body is the inferred sketching of a wave, my Island is your universe – without being so, like a suspended beacon, forever illuminating you.” e.n. e.n. You, the firmament’s woman of fortune, long-suffering as the immortal flower in your fertile womb. Amazing love and pain, in seeing hands and sentiment; the spherical prominence, the profound involvement of being, when you touch – beyond loneliness. Lena, composed of colours and eternally warm embraces, hidden moons. She waits and waits, attendant to the melody – a tenuous affection, the touching of form, another fleeting word. These canvas-paintings-poems of Lena’s are hidden shadows of the women from an Azores, inaccessible to the flight of the occidental spume. It is of no interest to confer meaning on the frenetic content of her woven ondulations. The expressions in her paintings are naive maritime reflexions, a beautiful ingenuousness of her affections. Look – without seeing, in how many ways are we surprised by the simplicity running through the clay, reddening in the shade; a tree of many dreams leaning toward the sea of the scattered Islands. Woman, as honey, amidst the sweetest sound and the gentlest wave… Far reaching sea spume poem… Gal’s fleeting history; woven through her purposeful attempts to unite the light of her body to its roots, feelings, and the emergence of wonder.
