In the April 18th is commemorate the
International Day on Monuments and
Sites. This day was created on 18th April,
1982, by ICOMOS and later approved at
the 22nd UNESCO General Conference
in 1983. This special day offers an
opportunity to raise public’s awareness
concerning the diversity of the world’s
heritage and the efforts that are required
to protect and conserve it, as well as to
draw attention to its vulnerability.
In Madeira there are a few iniciatives. In
the Município da Cultura in Ponta do Sol,
there is a exhibition about Ponta do Sol
Heritage and a conference about Ponta
do Sol Religious Heritage.
In Funchal, the São Lourenço Palace
promotes visited guides, an iniciative
entitled «Histórias de um Palácio na
História» and a Guitar Recital.

Once again, Funchal is staging an
amazing event not only visually but also
the aroma of “The Flower Festival”. It
takes place between the 19th and the 22nd
of April under the theme, “From Madeira
- One Flower for Peace”. This Festival
started in 1979 and it is a homage to the
local flowers and a continuity to Madeira’s
real traditions, which changes the city
for several days in a huge stage where
a number of artistic and cultural events
take place.
Besides, the “flower wall”, “the wall of
hope” and the big Flower parade, floral
carpets are laid in the heart of the
city. There are also classical music and
traditional concerts and there is a flower
exhibition which can be visited in “Largo
da Restauração” and the Flower market
along the “Avenida Arriaga.”
