goodbye to another Senior class. Over the past nine graduations, I have had to say goodbye to
our seniors, knowing that they were moving into the next level and phase of their walk towards
adulthood. These moments were always difficult, watching students who I had grown with over
four years and helped transform from skinny immature youths to mature young adults. This year
will be particularly sentimental for me as I watch my own daughter become one of the treasured
alumni of ACND. As difficult as it is, the change is necessary and positive as we send forth
these students to live out the mission instilled in them at ACND.
The Awards Assembly and the two Graduation Ceremonies, Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement, will call attention to the achievements of our students, the caring and very successful guidance of their teachers, and the warm support of their families.
At this time I would like to thank each student, teacher, coach, staff and parents whose engagement in our school has made the year better for our whole community. Students involved in athletics, speech and debate, Knightingales, Troubadours and the many other activities and clubs
we offer makes a better community and a more solid school.
The core group of the Parents’ Council deserves a special word of commendation. They have
raised the bar in promoting hospitality, being a living embodiment of our mission here and offer14-16 Senior Exams
ing dedicated service. Special thanks to Art and Catherine Salow, the co-presidents of the Par16th Baccalaureate Mass ent Council for taking the job and ensuring throughout the year that the parent council not only
7pm—St. Mary’s Cathedral lived up to their commitments but growing the council as well.
17th Graduation Practice
I ask that during the summer months we pray for our graduates, so that they may find their path.

By tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain
devotion. In May, it is the Blessed
Virgin Mary. This devotion arose among
Jesuits in Rome in the late 18th century and
quickly spread throughout the Western Church.
By the time of Pope Pius IX's declaration of
the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in
1854, it had become universal. May crownings
and other special May events in honor of
Mary, such as public recitation of the rosary,
stem from this time. Some prayers to the
Blessed Virgin can be incorporated into our
daily prayers during this month.

VICE PRINCIPAL FOR ACADEMICS
Br. James DePiro
At this time we are preparing for the end of the year activities which include final exams and graduation. Below are the dates
and times for specific exams. Parents of seniors have already received information regarding exams and end of the year activities and responsibilities in the mail. Please be attentive to them and help to make sure your child does the best he/she can
in order to properly reflect what has been learned throughout the year. For graduation activities, all seniors need to make sure
all is in order – academically, financially, resource obligations like athletic uniforms and school materials. Please be aware,
that senior i-Pads must be turned in as a condition for participating at the graduation ceremony on May 18.
Parents of the middle school will be, or already have received, specific information regarding the exams for middle school.
Please be attentive to the details regarding dismissal and student pick up.
Our Academic Awards ceremony is Tuesday evening, May 7, starting at 7pm. Invitations have gone out so please respond favorably to the invite. It is a great way to recognize those who have achieved academically throughout the year(s). Even if your
child receives only one award, it is an accomplishment and should be treated as such. I am expecting 100% attendance by all
invitees and their parents.
On a personal note, I am stepping down as the Vice principal for Academics as of July 1, 2013. I am remaining at ACND as a
full time teacher and will be director of our foundations program, working with the students, parents and faculty to better serve
the needs of those students. Over these last three years, I have tried to see that the Essential Elements of a Christian Brothers Education have been incorporated into the curriculum and into the instructional styles of the instructional staff. And, while
I may miss some aspects of the position, I am certainly looking forward to being that classroom instructor again.

CULTURAL ARTS
Troubadours
The Troubadours are very pleased to announce that there were only two students from all of the private schools in MiamiDade County selected for the summer “Nine-Star All-State Honors Band” to perform at the summer Music Educators Conference in Altamont Springs, Florida on July 13 th, and one of the two students was Dylan Foster. This is an Honor Band consisting of only 9th graders from across the entire State that has been created to give them the preparation experience to be
selected in the High School All-State Honors Band. Dylan is going to perform with some of the best ninth grade musicians
in the State and make memories that will be with him for a lifetime.
The annual Spring Concert held on Thursday, April 25 th was a big success, with the evening featuring a wide variety of musical styles. Included was a great guest artist by the name of Ms. Elizabeth Galvan (a professor from the Miami Dade College), who performed Solos on both her nine and a half long five octave Marimba, and our three octave Vibraphone. She
was brought in for the performance to show the students what is possible, to mentor them, and to help teach them the real
joy of performing music. It was incredible to see her mallets fly in the performance. She then performed with our two mallets students as a trio featuring Beatriz Teixeira and Jazz Thompson with perfect coordination between them. It was an incredible performance by the three of them and the best part is that both Beatriz and Jazz are first year mallets students.
Our Knightingales also exceeded quality levels this year with their medley of songs from “Les Miserables”. Then the evening finished with Ms. Galvan joining the Troubadours in performing “Phantom of the Opera”, and the evening brought
“standing ovations” from a very appreciative audience.
The Troubadours now move on to new music with more of a patriotic emphasis because of the coming holidays of Armed
Forces Day and Memorial Day with a performance for our neighbors at the Jewish Hospital on May 23 rd. We are waiting for
the news of how many of our Troubadours will be selected for the “Mayors Honors World Music Ensemble” to be held at the
Miami Dade College North Campus on May 20th. Finally, on May 30th the Troubadours will hold their annual “Directors
Awards Banquet” to recognize those students that have earned special recognition in what they have achieved that is beyond those awards given out at the Academic Awards Ceremony on May 7 th. ACND has established a very creditable program in Music with many students receiving recognition as some of the “best in the State” that has resulted in most Universities honoring their High School Music Credits for acceptance and for opening doors for Music Scholarships at those Universities. Participation with the Troubadours at the High School level is an “Elective”, but also a privilege and a very fun
way to satisfy school credits (plus many Community Service hours). it’s not too late for new students to join our Beginning
Band and Orchestra classes. If students begin now, it is possible for them to qualify for the Advanced Ensemble when
school begins in the fall. A “Full Credit” is required by ACND to qualify for High School Graduation, and it is wise to not
leave fulfilling that requirement until the Junior or Senior year when the academic schedule is more demanding. Some instruments are available for students to use without needing to rent or buy one, but they are limited. See the Music Director,
Mr. Johanson, immediately for more details. And continually check Ed-line for updates, performance schedules and newsletters.
The Knightingales
Mrs. Dominique, the Knightingales and the Drama Club would like to thank all who contributed in making the presentation
of “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” a success. Special thanks to the parents who helped with stage and
costumes, the Parent Council and Mrs. Alma Metcalf for coordinating the concession stand, Mrs. Yanick Francois and her
family for preparing the room for the Saturday Dinner-Show and Mr. Jerry Dominique for cooking dinner on Saturday
night. We are all forever grateful.
Mrs. Dominique also would like to particularly thank Mr. Ralph D’Ovidio for his help in putting together the band for the
show. The experience was a very exciting one.
All students, performers and stage crew deserve a special recognition as the success of the production depended mainly
on their commitment. We took the show on the road to St. Joseph Church and to St. Rose of Lima School where our student were able to showcase their professionalism and Knighthood. Congratulations on a job well-done!
Moving on…. the Knightingales are now getting ready for all the services associated with the end of the year and
graduation. They will also make an appearance at the Miami Dade County Courthouse on May 21 to honor the Marine
Corps and the Navy. The performance will consist of a 15-minute a cappella singing of patriotic music that will include:
“The Star Spangled Banner, Taps, and the Navy and Marines Corps Anthems.”
