It’s in its nature... We are right at the start of spring, and those of us who live in places where farming is a reasonably important activity will know that this is a time of hard work, but also one of hope for a good harvest. These routines that nature fortunately imposes on us are being somewhat disrupted by present difficulties. Portugal has first rate natural conditions – a temperate climate, good soil, a large coastline - which, if utilised in what we now refer to as a sustainable manner, could nurture all kinds of economically profitable activities. People and politics have decided otherwise, however. They have made it pay to relinquish farming and fishing and relocate traditional industries in exchange for structural funds (all trace and consequence of which have faded away) and the growing importation of goods and services which flowed into a dangerously excessive trade deficit. We are therefore very vulnerable, and the resurgence of any “continental system” would leave us teetering on the verge of starvation and ruin. But there is always calm after a storm. We should not become disheartened or lose courage. The time has come for the country to back its small and medium sized enterprises, and give up on the myth of major projects and multinationals which come along in times of favours and subsidies, but vanish at the first hint of difficulties, giving back nothing of what they have unfairly, and quite wrongly, received. For us businessmen, the time has come to do what we’ve always done: work, manage and save. The expression “sustainable production” clearly identifies the modern-day challenge. The best answer from the ceramics industry lies in the correct coordination of several factors: specialisation, improvement of processes, good environmental quality, good technical performance, durability of materials and production components, low requirement of natural resources and the selection of technologies that reduce energy consumption. This was the message that Paulo Noguês, representing Recer, expressed at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon during the V Construlink Workshop. This took place last November and focused on the technical issues related to construction products and systems, which must be born in mind in light of the new regulatory requirements. Apart from promoting this citizenship attitude, particularly in relation to the environmental implications of the Company’s business operations, he also pointed out that Recer has adopted a cogeneration system for producing thermal energy and electricity. He added that, taking the ceramics industry as a whole, the company has led the way by installing the first waste water treatment plant (WWTP) in the ceramics sector in Portugal - even anticipating current legislation. Regardless of how often we celebrate Christmas, there is always a way to add a new twist to it. At Recer, this spirit of regeneration, which is so evident in our creative and technological process, had yet another high point during the final month of 2008. On the 19th of December, more than 200 employees joined the Management for lively and fun-filled Christmas Eve celebrations at the Residencial Paraíso (Oliveira do Bairro). The Mixed Choir of the Portuguese Red Cross in Águeda set the tune for the celebrations, with seasonal songs. The event also provided an opportunity to announce the winners of the “Team Spirit” Competition. This initiative is designed to reveal the artistic skills of Recer staff in creating nativity cribs using everyday materials. Although it was a close contest, the highest award was given to the trio of Bruno Silva (Presses), Vânia Tavares (Colouring) and Sara Silva (Lines). And because Christmas ultimately belongs to children, three days before the most longed-for night of the year, the children of Recer’s workers were also given their own party. A clown, a juggler and, of course, Father Christmas, with his bag of presents, did the honours at the Cerpol (a company in the Recer Group) facilities, in an afternoon that these kids will hopefully remember for some time to come. Recer is being asked more and more often to open its doors to school visits and other initiatives that aim to supplement the theoretical or practical courses in Portuguese schools with technical or higher training in construction or related activities. In much the same way as many previous visits, on the 9th of December Recer welcomed 15 architecture students from the Catholic University of Portugal, in Viseu. They were accompanied by their lecturer, António Canha da Piedade. The group members were able to gain deeper insights in terms of practical knowledge of the world of finishing ceramics in the light of their course plan. During the festive season, Recer invited anyone visiting it to admire another type of ceramic art: the art of the master Ferreira da Silva. With the backing of the Vocational Training Centre for the Ceramics Industry (CENCAL), the display THE ART OF CHRISTMAS was on show in the Recer showroom in Oliveira do Bairro from the 8th of December 2008 to the 6th of January 2009. It included nativity scenes where the author revealed a style characterised by powerful forms. Ferreira da Silva was born in Porto in 1928. He was a ceramic painter, and it was in this role that he would later break with the current production of the ceramics factories of Alcobaça where he worked, aiming to produce original and creative pieces. Ferreira da Silva defines a style in both ceramic and metal sculpting, as well as in engraving. He shows a clear preference for materials that offer some resistance, for powerful forms, for sgraffitoed decorations, for patinae obtained from black engobes and glass with metallic effects. É preciso prevenir! Prevention is the key! Recer is taking part in the programme PREVENIR – Prevention as a Solution, which is being developed in partnership between the Portuguese Business Association (AEP) and the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT), and which aims to intervene directly in the field of Safety, Hygiene and Health in the Workplace, working at the level of small and medium companies in the ceramics and glass sector. PREVENIR aims to promote change in the organisational culture of the business world and to further the development of Portuguese industry, economic progress and the increased wellbeing of society as a whole. It does so by intervening directly in companies at the level of Safety, Hygiene and Health in the Workplace. Through this programme, the AEP has already collaborated with the following sectors: Metallurgy and Metal, Wood and Furniture, and Textile and Clothing. Aqui a equipa funcionou. Sometimes, happily, you get works like this, the result of fortuitous collaboration. In the case of “the Moleirinho” (the little miller), the space is not very big. But more important is whether the end result made a difference. And here this seems to be the case! Team work started at the design stage and was occasionally carried over to the work itself. Here, the team worked. Everyone pulled together. The developer, the architect, the designer and the workforce were in spiritual harmony. It seems simple and logical, but the architect is often faced with complex scenarios, where he has to make compromises to ensure that nothing is lost in the end result. In their day-to-day work architects often find themselves divided. They have to know how to understand and meet a Client’s expectations, but they also have a duty to society that cannot be neglected when the work is destined for public use. Because architecture is put on show and has to be able to convey a strong message concerning the factors of quality of the built spaces, contributing to a stimulating environment and so fostering a better life setting. The Moleirinho project was carried out in the second half of 2008, and in fact it is a breath of fresh air. The end result reflects the initial idea created for this catering establishment and bakery. Located in Cernache, 12 km from Coimbra, the housing, trade and services building in which it is housed is strategically situated at the entrance to the town, next to the IC 2 highway, the former EN1. With a large adjacent car park, the Moleirinho occupies two adjoining fronts on the ground floor of the building, and is clearly visible from the access roads nearby. HOMAGE TO THE WORK OF THE MILLER No two works are the same and this one resulted in a scenario of involvement and easy exchange between the various actors, and when this is the case, the work can be quite enjoyable. The overall care with which the whole space has been treated is highlighted, as would be expected, in the attention given to the customer area and, in particular, to the entrance. Here, a decorative motif was designed which pays homage to the work of the miller and to the place where his activity was traditionally carried out - the windmill, which is still a vital part of our collective memory. This idea is further reinforced by placing an original limestone millstone in this entryway. It also blends in with the graphical layout designed to give the establishment its identity. The material chosen for the panel was ceramics, due to its versatility and because it is also a timeless and flexible material which performs well both indoors and outdoors. In this particular case, its application begins on the outside to herald the atmosphere and “invite” people to go inside. The panel literally crosses the shutters REVISTA RECER MARÇO - JUNHO 2009 Criação de baixo-relevo, utilizando a técnica de gravação por jacto de areia. Produto: Arts Antracite, 60x120 Bas-relief creation, using the technique of embossing by sand blasting. Product: Arts Antracite, 60x120 “The Little Miller” in ceramics and goes through to the inside. It was created in porcelain stoneware, with rectangular pieces placed below, which draw on the original blueprint of the market part already supplied with a normal frame placed along its length. The motif was etched onto the panels, and the desired result was achieved by stripping the surface layer of the pieces laid out in mosaic. The ceramic panel is cut into the integral coating of the wall, for which wood backed with marine plywood or phenolic resin was chosen because here too we move from the outside to the inside. The lighting is continuous LED strips with various colours. The ceramics coexists with three other noble materials: wood, glass and metal. No caso vertente, a aplicação é iniciada no plano exterior anunciando o ambiente e “convidando” à entrada. In spite of the economic downturn, Recer has not abandoned its commitment to social sustainability, especially when two crucial elements for the future are at stake: urban regeneration and social welfare for children. The Casa Céu Aberto – Temporary Accommodation Centre for children and young people at risk, of the MSV - Movimento ao Serviço da Vida (Movement for Life), which was inaugurated on the 20th of November following the restoration of a dilapidated building in the Parque da Belavista, granted by Lisbon City Council, therefore merited Recer’s full support when it came to the ceramic tile finishing. The company donated various ceramic collections (the Tecno and Unicolor porcelain tiles and the Neve series), all with characteristics suitable for this purpose, which will see heavy use and so require strong resistance to wear and tear. With a living room and a dining room, individual and double bedrooms, administrative offices and revamped outdoor areas, the accommodation centre will be able to house 12 children at risk, providing them with an environment resembling a family structure as closely as possible, to try and ensure their overall development and integration in society. The building is of traditional Portuguese design. It is the old Quinta do Pombeiro manor house, which saw its outer design finally completed at the beginning of the 20th century. Its poor state of repair required restoration work beyond that needed for the ultimate purpose of the building. The Movimento ao Serviço da Vida (MSV) is an organisation that has been devoted to social and humanitarian work for over ten years, developing projects to support children who fall Sempre com uma atitude de cidadania, todos sabem na Recer que a actividade industrial não se compadece apenas com perspectivas empresariais. Purchased in November 2001 by the Queiroz Pereira Group from the Shiayama family, from Osaka, the Villa Magna Hotel is one of the most emblematic hotels in the Madrid city centre. This Hotel was recently renovated using 80% Portuguese materials, including various Recer ceramics series, in a wide range of environments and spaces (see technical information): patios, terraces, laundries and kitchens. The restoration of this leading example of the hotel industry in the Spanish capital, which is now classed as a 6 star hotel, with 150 luxury rooms, is revealing of the particular competence of Portuguese companies in two of the currently most important segments in construction: construction for the hotel/tourism industry and restoration. Located in one of the noble parts of the city, the Paseo da Castellana, the hotel underwent building work that was completed at the end of last year, in a 14-month intervention that, with the exception of the façades and the floor tiles, involved the almost total demolition of the original building. Set in the countryside, in the Quinta da Vista Alegre housing development, a few hundred meters from the Aveiro estuary, the forest and a range of leisure facilities, and just a few minutes away from the urban centre and the University of Aveiro, this development, where various Recer ceramics series were used, combines the proximity of nature with the contemporary comfort of the city. It is set in an area where the aromas of the earth and the water blend in with the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With a quality that exceeds that of conventional buildings, nothing is left to chance. The right orientation, glassed areas suitably sized for their orientation, the right thermal and acoustic insulation, the necessary shade and exposure to sunlight and the balanced natural ventilation help create an intimate and welcoming environment, perfect for comfortable and peaceful everyday living. This development, currently being marketed by Arlindo & Jesus Construções, Lda, the company also responsible for its construction, places the emphasis on peace and quiet, through an architecture that is in constant dialogue with nature, «As preocupações no domínio da decoração são bastantes, muito pormenorizadas e diversificadas, tendo em conta o facto do edifício estar vocacionado para um público-alvo entre os 20 e os 35 anos, que aprecia o que é moderno e o que está na moda», explica Arlindo Neves, que se dedica ao sector da construção desde 1996. As séries porcelânicas Ardósia e Ton-Sur-Ton, na fachada, as diversas propostas Ana Salazar, os rectificados Xangai e Palace, o revestimento Twist e o porcelânico Soho, nos espaços interiores, foram algumas das colecções Recer privilegiadas, conferindo uma ambiência serena, de paz, que se vive em todos os instantes. which can not only be seen, but also felt. “The concerns in terms of decoration are plenty, very detailed and varied, given that the building is targeting people aged between 20 and 35, who enjoy everything modern and in fashion”, Arlindo Neves, who has been working in the construction sector since 1996, explains. The porcelain series Ardósia and Ton-Sur-Ton series, on the façade, and several Ana Salazar series, the rectified products Xangai and Palace, the wall tile Twist and the porcelain tiles Soho, in the interiors, were the Recer collections chosen, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere, that can be experienced in every moment. Combining novel design and technology with high-quality finishings, including various Recer ceramic series, these 12 type 2 apartments enjoy a privileged view over a branch of the Aveiro estuary. The Tibete Neutro and Antracite 60x60 porcelain tiles on the façades and the Roubion Cristal Peróla 33x66.5 rectified tiles and the Arts 30x60 and Soho 60x60 porcelain tiles for the interiors were the Recer collections used on this project, the first ever built by Otília Carvalhais in her own name. With a long history of managing similar construction projects, this businesswoman recently undertook an individual challenge with the firm conviction of making a difference by investing in quality. “To make something different. I don’t like to do what’s normal. My goal is to invest in what’s good, in quality. And to look for neutral things that will satisfy different aesthetic sensibilities. Recer’s agent, Eduardo Carvalho, helped me find the right solutions to put my ideas into practice”, she explains. What sets this urban development project apart is its modern feel. This building is set in a noble area, in harmony with the topography of the land, creating a dynamic of wide spaces. The care taken to endow the apartments with the best possible view of the estuary is combined with a clear separation between areas for daytime living and areas that require more tranquility, and make it possible to live in tune with each individual’s natural balance. Tendo começado a escrever há vinte anos, Graça Anyone who can remember the world of fairy tales is easily transported back to this other reality when they visit the Lugar dos Afectos, a theme park associated with emotions and feelings, in Eixo, Aveiro, which is part of a nonprofit foundation. Made up of houses in many shapes and colours, here you will find emotion games, exhibitions and other activities that give everyone the opportunity to find a way to open up their heart. The Lugar dos Afectos includes seven houses, set in the Jardim das Emoções (Garden of Emotions), and uses Recer ceramics, created specifically to suit this artistic project. Its interior and exterior architecture was conceived by Graça Gonçalves, a writer and doctor, following on from her work as an author of books and emotion games. “Throughout the time (almost seven years) I have been involved in building this place I gradually broadened the concept underlying the Language of Emotions and created the Colecção Afectos (Emotions Collection), for which I have been able to develop projects in a whole range of areas, from tiles, to furniture, textiles, kitchenware and jewellery”, the author explains. I love you, You are Special, Give me a place in your Heart, Gentleness is a tender love, Flavours of Gentleness, the Food of Love, Love Candy, Sweet love, Harmony, Love Rose and Perfect-Love (Buttercup) are some of the lines in the collection that she has created. “The underlying principle behind this collection was not, is not and will never be confined only to the Lugar dos Afectos. The Language of the Emotions is the only one that Gonçalves foi pioneira nos livros e jogos de afectos, e, hoje, está também lançada em outros voos afectuosos. O Lugar dos Afectos é, assim, um espaço – para todas as idades – profundamente inovador e onde o mais ínfimo detalhe tem significado. is common to us all, in all stages of life, in all places, in all homes”, Graça Gonçalves adds. She also admits there has been a lot of public interest in acquiring her ceramic creations, at least by those who visit the park. Graça Gonçalves, who started writing twenty years ago, has been a pioneer in books and games dealing with emotions, and today she is once again heading off on other flights of feeling. From words, which she publishes through Gostar, she has moved on to the design of furniture, textiles, kitchenware, ceramics, jewels and even a wedding dress. And all this with the same aim: to collect funds to maintain and develop the Lugar dos Afectos. A lot of hard work and creativity, which have led to the development of more than 700 prototypes in the many areas in which she works. The Lugar dos Afectos is, thus, a highly innovative space, for all ages, and somewhere where even the smallest detail is filled with meaning. Located in Santo Amaro, in Chaves, one of the six buildings that make up the Quinta da Feliciana housing project is virtually finished. At first sight, the building immediately stands out when we catch a glimpse of the tricolour palette – green, grey and beige – of the Arts porcelain tile collection, an outdoor tiling solution by Recer for ventilated façades. The end result encouraged António Vidal, manager of the construction and promotion company behind Quinta da Feliciana – Castro & Filhos – to use the ventilated façade technology in the remaining five buildings planned. This choice is largely due to the suggestions given by António Fontora, the director of Flavigrés, Comercialização de Materiais de Construção, Lda. This distributor from Chaves, together with the architecture company in charge of designing the project, suggested this system for covering the building, using the Recer 60x120 ceramic tiles. “The quality/price ratio was crucial for the choice of product”, António Fontora remarks. The suggestion and arguments given by the distributor make even more sense when we realise we are also in the presence of the company in charge of applying the tiles. Luxus, António Fontora’s company of ventilated façade systems, fitted the suggested ceramic wall tiles on the outside of the first building (with approximately 2000 m2), at Quinta da Feliciana. The new building project will be ready in six months in a residential complex essentially made up of 3 bedroom flats. Apart from the large size of the apartments, Quinta da Feliciana also benefits from a central location, which, according to António Vidal, will attract many buyers. Castro & Filhos has been in the construction market for 30 years and has a “turnkey” company philosophy: it buys land, builds on it and sells the buildings through the real estate company Castro & Filhos. The ventilated façade system is the best suited for large formats for outdoor use. With the right combination of ceramic materials, it offers clear advantages as far as durability, maintenance and thermal performance are concerned. MÁRCIA MARTINS REVISTA RECER MARÇO - JUNHO 2009 21 SOLANGE JESUS SUSANA ROSA SÉRGIO NOLASCO The year has only just begun, but for ADERCUS-Recer we are already halfway through the season and all the athletes are getting ready for a second stage of high calibre competitions, under the guidance of Ricardo Esteves. Expectations are running high and reflect the results already achieved this year. The bronze medal for Solange Jesus, in the 3 000 m, in the second round of the national indoor championship at the Expo-Centro in Pombal, on the 11th of February, was a good tonic for the whole team, which managed to do very well in various competitions during the second month of the year: the GE Galan – Stockholm Meeting and the 41st District Cross-Country Championships (long distance), Junior and Juvenile classes. After these competitions, Ricardo Esteves is hoping that his team will do well in the Portuguese Indoor Championships, scheduled to be held in Pombal, and later in the national crosscountry championships, with the long-distance event in Castelo Branco, and the short-distance one in Figueira da Foz. Expectations are also focused on Márcia Martins who will once again have her sights set on a podium place in the National Mountain Running Championship. She will also be giving her best in the European competition in this category, in Estonia. Solange Jesus, in the 3000 m steeplechase, and Carla Martinho, in the 10 000 m, are also expected to make their mark in 2009. For Ricardo Esteves, “individual results will most certainly be defining the next few months, while group contributions will tend to maintain the same standards as last year, in both the women’s and the men’s teams”. At the “Moments by Recer” stand, which Recer presented between the 10th and 13th of February in Valencia (Spain) during the 27th edition of CEVISAMA, the leading novelties amid the suggestions of the Nature collection on display were the Orion and Heron series, both porcelain tile collections. But the Coral series revealed the full flexibility of its range of applications. In a 272 m2 exhibition area, in Pavilion 2 – level 2 – stand B12, Recer presented a wide range of products, with solutions for a variety of consumption styles and different decorative approaches, including the realm of special projects. Based on the new technologies and raw materials the company has at its disposal, Recer presented itself as the best partner in the development of “Special Projects”, “a field of activity which deserved its own space, where the full capacity of the company could be put on show”, according to Miguel Rosa, Export Manager for Recer. The goal was to use this space to “aim to present large scale products, designed for hotels, revamps or regeneration projects, which combine traditional techniques with modern insights”, Recer’s creative director, Fernando Simões, explains. The stand was designed in light of an innovative philosophy and architecture, as the designer explains: “Two lateral showcases were developed, one with the Shell product (recommended in particular for kitchens, bathrooms and spas) and the other with the Butterfly (a neutral product, sophisticated, suited to bathrooms, both classic and modern) and Coral series (suited to bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms and even bedrooms), together with other different spaces”. In the middle of the stand is the Moments space, which was very popular. It was a practical area, where collections, pieces and folders could be consulted. The aim was to let visitors not only see the products, but to feel them too. The stand‘s floor was covered with Orion tiles, in grey, for neutrality - though it did create some graphic movement. It could therefore support the presentation of all the collections. The public response met expectations and Recer also took the opportunity to introduce the 2009 General Catalogue where, according to the director of marketing, Daniel Santos, we can find the “testimony of those who know the world of ceramics really well and are committed to sophistication, innovation and reliability – concepts we try to develop so as to be able to satisfy the highest standards required of us, in the very best of taste”. Recer integrou projecto de casa sustentável Mudar de vida Change your life Recer takes part in project for sustainable house Over sixty architects took part in the exhibition of products, services, materials and solutions for housing, which was held between the 11th and 14th of December at Exponor. In an exhibition by and for architects, these professionals made the most of the various, and varied spaces and dynamics to unleash their creativity. Projecto Casa – Mudar de Vida (Project Home – Change your Life), to which Recer contributed, involved the exhibition of a sustainable home that was intended to integrate solutions for housing, from the perspective of quality and design. The architect Pedro Barata Castro was invited by the Portuguese Business Association to design the bedroom and the bathroom in the model home. “The small size of both spaces (the only fixed pre-design specification), led to a strategy of compression/ decompression of the space being adopted. This was achieved mainly through the design of the central distribution area and the relationships established between windows, mirrors and key visual contexts. The perforated closets, which are essential in the definition and characterisation of any space, were original designs, developed specifically for this project”, this architect explains. He used Recer’s Urban series, M10x10, in light blue. This event was completely different from any other exhibition in the sector held in Portugal, since it provided the opportunity to create innovative spaces. The Procura Arquitecto (Find an Architect) space gave architects the opportunity to get in touch with potential clients directly and present their services and architecture suggestions, as well as to establish contacts with companies exhibiting at the event. There was also a specific exhibition area that featured good practices in restoration, called Histórias Felizes (Success Stories). The Focus Kitchen space involved three kitchens, all notable for their architecture and design. With the aim of encouraging the restoration of buildings and a return to town and city centres, the emblematic Rua do Almada was recreated in a section of the fair that took the same name. The street is increasingly considered a must-see by professionals for anyone looking for different architecture and design solutions. But Fliesenhandel an der Cristallerie has also made an excellent partnership, as these products sell very well.” During the visit, Jürgen Lichtmess appreciated the friendliness of the Recer team, including the President of the Board of Directors, Antero Calvo, who he had “the pleasure of meeting”. He is pleased with Recer’s commercial strategy, as well as with the company’s innovative design that attracts German consumers, particularly que toca à oferta dos revestimentos“brancos” e em grandes formatos (33x90). On the way to Rome and Santiago, thousands of pilgrims, merchants, warriors, men of faith and culture, passed by it and saw the same stones as people do today and the river Douro, that liquid road, alongside which these beautiful convent lands used to stretch. The culture of the monks, who not only prayed but also taught, healed and made good wine, grew fruit, devoted themselves to horticulture, honey and liqueurs, were the cement that bonded men and peoples who depended on their faith and knowledge, united against the Moors, helping the King D. The Alpendurada Convent of today has been rebuilt using the same centuries-old stones of num enquadramento feliz do presente com o antigo de que ressalta um bem-estar, beleza e paz únicos que envolvem todos quantos por aqui passam. It retains the austerity and mystique of the olden days in a fortunate blend of the present and the past that creates a wonderful sense of wellbeing, beauty and peace that envelops anyone who happens by. 17TH AND 18TH CENTURY TILES Back in those centuries there was a taste in Portugal for monumental ceramic tile work in churches, palaces and religious houses like the Alpendurada convent. The tile was fully exploited as a decorative material. However, since it was very expensive to commission large unique panels, suited to each locale, the choice often fell upon repetition tiles. Os desenhos típicos passaram a ser ing polychrome patterns which were produced by combining a variable number of tiles, forming panels of 4, 16, 36 or more elements. Tile painters used illustrations of ornaments that arrived from Europe and exotic printed fabrics from India to create ceramic tiles designed for large surfaces. From the last quarter of the 17th century, various patterns of tapetes reproduced in blue and white began to emerge, like the ones we can see on the walls of the rooms in the Hotel Convento de Alpendurada. This reflected the influence of similarly coloured Chinese and Dutch porcelain. For some time Portugal bought monumental tile collections from Holland (the last import was in 1715) in which blue was often the main colour. Apart from the large figurative panels, the Netherlands was also the source of common tiles, called figura avulsa, or stand-alone figure, each representing an independent scene. The “chronicle” tile also appeared, depicting historic scenes. Palaces – after 1640, when Portugal regained its independence from Spain – were covered in tile panels representing battles, hunting scenes or scenes of everyday life. The Hotel Convento de Alpendurada also houses several collections of these panels that portray scenes from the life of the convent and/ or theactivities of the people on the land. In the entrances and staircases of the wealthier palaces there are the “welcoming figures”, representing doormen or armed soldiers. In churches and convents, the tiles depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments and recount episodes from the life of the Saints, in series of panels which bear some resemblance to a cartoon narrative. At the beginning of the 18th century, during the reign of D. João V, tile painters acquired the status of artists, frequently signing their work. os concheados irregulares em dois tons de azul em contraste. It was the Cycle of the Masters and of the increased production of tiles. Tiles during the Pombaline period (from the Marquis of Pombal), after the death of D. João V, were influenced by the rococo style. The typical designs now became irregular shell-shapes in two contrasting shades of blue. Othe colours were used later. The figurative panels of the time often feature courtly and bucolic scenes. In the second half of the 18th century, and especially after the Lisbon Earthquake, the registos de santos (register of saints) began to appear, small panels which were placed on the façades for protection against catastrophes. The most frequent images are of Saint Anthony, the patron of the city of Lisbon and Saint Martial, the saint invoked against fires. Around 1780, in the reign of D. Maria I, the neoclassical style emerged: the “D. Maria style”, as it became known in Portugal. It was popular until the early 19th century. Tiles began to portray rosettes, wreaths, feathers and medallions with landscapes. MYSTERY AND MYSTIQUE IN ALPENDURADA A sense of mystery and mystique are still present in the Hotel - Convento de Alpendurada, opening people’s eyes to beauty and perfection. The rooms, whose furniture, chandeliers and tiles date from the 17th and 18th centuries, seem to reflect the good taste of princes and kings. The rooms, former cells, still have the same stone benches by the window overlooking the countryside, where the monks used to sit and read, pray, study and reflect. The surrounding gardens, the cloister, the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the belvederes and over 2 km of Douro riverbank warrant its description as paradise on earth. The animals that can be found in the complex – wild boar, ducks, partridges, foxes, wild cats, kites, rabbits and eagles – are a true revelation of nature. In the forest, with over two million trees of every kind, there are also 20 houses that have been restored using materials from days gone by (granite and seasoned chestnut wood) with wooden roofs and balconies that overlook a breathtaking landscape, giving it the beauty and dignity often found in small manor houses, in a dream setting. ROMANESQUE AND BAROQUE ARCHITECTURE Built in the 11th century, the Alpendurada Convent underwent several changes during the 16th, 17th, 18th and 20th centuries. With its religious, Romanesque and baroque architecture, this old convent for monks of the Benedictine Order includes a baroque church with a longitudinal layout, a single nave covered by a barrel vault and carved secondary altarpieces and a main front which ends in a triangular pediment. The cloister is plain, with arcades with round arches supported on ionic columns.
