MÁSCARAS EM PORTUGAL 2011 INTERNATIONAL MASK THEATRE FESTIVAL FI Varge e Aveleda Jouluna ja tapaninpäivänä kylien nuorien poikien naamiokarnevaalijoukko ottaa silmätikukseen yhteisön jäseniä tai jopa kokonaisia perheitä, naljailee ja pilailee heidän kustannuksellaan. Erityisesti naimattomat tytöt ovat vaarassa joutua näiden armottomien peltinaamaisten arvostelijoiden kynsiin. Kaikenlainen fl irttailu ja seksuaalinen käyttäytyminen paljastetaan, jotta tekijät puhdistuisivat ja osaisivat välttyä uusilta kiusauksilta. Tällä rienaavalla rituaalilla on yhteisössä pyhä merkitys, se pyyhkii symbolisesti pois synnit, ohjaa sosiaalisesti, puhdistaa ilmapiiriä, ja valmistaa yhteisöä uuteen vuoteen. EN Varge and Aveleda On Christmas and Saint Steven’s day, the “caretos” of the “festa dos rapazes” from Varge and Aveleda play the role of critics of the censurable, or seen as such, acts committed by some members, groups or families of the respective communities. The critics specially target the group of the unmarried girls, mock at flirting and sometimes are made through the explicit language of sexuality. This is the profane ritual called “loas” (carols) in Varge, or “comédias” (comedies) in Aveleda. This form of criticizing mundane events is a profane act that involves something sacred: the purification or social expurgation of the community, the remission of its sins through public disclosure and social prophylaxis, the preparation of the community to enter a new productive cycle that will initiate with the New Year. The censurable acts are disclosed in order to purify and redeem its doers, and to prevent repetition. Either the “caretos” themselves or local craftsmen manufacture the masks using tin plate. EN Baçal The 12th Night in Baçal, celebrated on the 6th of January, is brought to life by the social group of the boys, thus the name “festa dos rapazes” (the party of the boys). The “festa dos rapazes” and the 12th Night might be two sides of the same celebration: Pagan and Christian. In fact, all rituals included in the festivity are carried out by the boys and do not seem to be connected to the Christian tradition, but to festivities of the agrarian cycle that used to take place in certain critical periods in Nature: the solstices, the beginning of the year, the beginning of a season. In Baçal the masks are made of straw, cork, switch and twig by locals. -António A. EN Cidões – The Feast of the Goat In the village of Cidões, Vinhais, the locals have maintained a ritual since long forgotten times, which aims at expunging all evil. A goat, widely known as a symbol of the Devil, is cooked in earthenware. The following night serves as playground for transgressions where the boys create chaos all over in the village, running through the streets with an ox cart. The noise will certainly prevent the population from sleeping. EN Masks from Portuguese villages The carnival mask is a living tradition in Portuguese villages. Every year, ordinary people present the various characters – which are at once archetypal and unique to the local area. With the ritual masks, people carry the centuries-old tradition, and blending pagan and Christian elements. Rituals are important community-cleaning events, reinforcing the cycle of the human and the divine relationship between good and evil, fertility and death. This exhibition is a production of Portugal’s Progestur organization, which documents this tradition. EN MasQue 2011 – October 21-23, 2011 Teatteri Metamorfoosi would like to extend a very warm welcome to this international mask festival, which is now taking place for the third time at Stoa, the cultural centre in the east of Helsinki. From the beginning, the idea was to bring together some of the most prominent home-grown and international theatre artists, who use masks in a delightful or interesting way. We want to share with you our search for everything a mask can be. Over the three-day festival, each performance sheds a new, unique and creative light on how masks can be used. The borders of mask work will bend and creak, as we see a melancholic Marilyn, a terrible bitch, a Cinderella with an eye patch, a monitor-headed Don Quixote, and a god torn by love for the flesh. In this kind of company, nothing strange is a stranger. As well as Finnish performances, we welcome troupes from France, Britain, and Switzerland. There are also presentations, where local theatre artists will treat audiences to a behind-the-scenes glimpse of their work and show how to physically build a mask character. There are also workshops on offer, where you can try mask acting for yourself!
