\\\ Northern Europeans have long complained of a lack of forest fruits in the cold and snowy months. Now they can rely on the Portuguese company Hubel, which is the first in Europe that has managed to produce raspberries in the depths of winter. up54_sucessoPT.indd 46 12/03/18 15:30 up54_sucessoPT.indd 47 12/03/18 15:30 0 01 S U C E S S O E M P O RT U G U Ê S / P O RT U G U E S E S U C C E S S \\\ Em 2010 a Hubel exportou cerca de 370 toneladas, tendo dobrado esse valor no ano passado, com os morangos a representar 70% da exportação. \\\ In 2010, Hubel shipped nearly 370 tons in 2010, and doubled that figure last year, with strawberries making up 70% of exports. At the end of last century, when Humberto Teixeira looked at such an intemperate sight, it wasn’t quite that particular image of Northern European winters that he glimpsed but rather an enormous market opportunity for Hubel. “The agricultural products that we were producing in the Algarve had become much less profitable, so we were looking for alternatives at the time. We saw this gap in the Nordic market and looked at our operation – the right technology, experience and perfect climactic conditions to produce forest fruits. It was all a combination of factors.” Perhaps Humberto is right and the success of this project originates simply from a combination of factors. However, while he drives us around the 14 hectares of greenhouses in the Algarve, we can’t help thinking that the success was more down to vision and desire. It’s remarkable to see, for example, the strawberry production lines literally hanging in the air, the hibernation process of the plants and the workers with their famous tablets, which allow the entire company to know, in real time, the quantities and quality produced, performance bonuses and training needs. At Hubel, there’s a noticeable appetite for innovation, and talking to its director general is an excellent example of this. He can be distinguished by his competence and knowledge but also by the glint in his eye when, at the end of our visit, he proudly demonstrates how the entire productive process is controlled technologically in the machine room: the definition of the waters, the mix of nutrients, meal times. Everything can be programmed on site, in any of the greenhouses or even at home, sitting on the sofa. up _ abril / april 12 up54_sucessoPT.indd 48 12/03/18 15:30 > > dutivo é controlado tecnologicamente: a definição das águas, a mistura de nutrientes, a hora das refeições. À partida, seria de estranhar esta opção, mas ela explica-se pelo profundo Humberto takes us on a short journey back in time and some of the historical milestones of a company that this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. It’s worth knowing that, for example, the company was founded on the marketing of irrigation support systems for agriculture, an area that is part of the group’s current portfolio, along with the water industry, fertilisers and production methods; and that agricultural production, which is perhaps the image that the public knows best, only came ten years after, as only as an experiment because, as Humberto says, “we were seeking knowledge that could prove to our clients that the solutions we offered were actually more profitable”. When it developed this agricultural area in 1992, the company immediately became a pioneer with its use of hydroponics, a subset of hydroculture in which plants are grown in soil-free recipients and fed with a nutrient solution made up of water and substances crucial to their growth. The technique was initially used for melon and tomato production, a step that represented, at that time, an innovation, both in the Algarve and Portugal itself. However, certain structural changes in the country, like entry into the European Union, would see the project discontinued, while the experience and technology remained in place. In 1998, the company started hydroponics trials with strawberries, with the idea of supplying the Northern European market in the winter. It appears to be a peculiar option, however, this is explained by the fact that that consumers normally know this type of product well and have a close relationship with brands. Because of this, “the only viable option was offering this fruit at a time of the year when local producers couldn’t meet these needs”. And this is how we get to Hubel’s magic trick, which is getting the fruit to appear in the wrong season. \\\ The director general of Hubel, Humberto Teixeira, was born in Faro, on 14th January, 1955. U > company’s general director outlines three factors that made this possible: “First, our experience in hydroponic systems allows us to control the plant nutrients and maximise quality. Then, the winter climate of the Algarve and this region in particular, between Faro and Tavira, is similar to Nordic summers. And finally, the hibernation of the plants, which is a key process in this equation, because it allows us total control of their life cycle”. Since 1998, when strawberry production began, Hubel has witnessed successive improvements in the quantities produced, while receiving very encouraging signs from the market itself. So much so that, five years ago, Humberto and his team decided to make history once again in the agricultural field and attempt raspberry production, this time in partnership with the world’s largest producer – the American company Driscoll’s. The results are plain. From the initial couple of tons exported in that first year, Hubel shipped nearly 370 tons in 2010, and doubled that figure last year, with strawberries making up 70% of exports. This record will soon be broken and, in 2016, the company forecast that 5,000 tons of red fruit will be transported to the supermarkets of Northern Europe. This number does not include the potential for blackberry production, which is currently in its early stages in the company’s research office. Humberto Teixeira is still surprised. He never imagined that the agricultural production business could reach an annual sales volume of 4.5 million euros, around 15% of the group’s turnover, and employ over 200 people at the height of production. However, the truth is that, given the enormous potential of this market, these figures are constantly improving. He says that the future is already mapped out. “It involves increasing the area of the operation, continuing technological development and further improving the quality of their produce.” After all, there’s an image and reputation to uphold; like it says in the TV advert: “If you want to eat the best raspberries in Europe, talk to Hubel.” U up _ abril / april 12 up54_sucessoPT.indd 50 12/03/18 15:30
