Transportation
Rio de Janeiro
 Bus: Rio de Janeiro has a vast bus system with more than 1,000 routes and a dozen operators. While the
bus system is a convenient form of transportation in the city, it can be very complicated for tourists. Buses
start at R$2.7 (US$1.25) each way. Route information is available online. www.rioonibus.com
 Taxi: Taxi cabs in Rio de Janeiro are yellow with a blue stripe. This is the most convenient form of
transportation around the city, but be prepared for traffic to be very heavy during rush hours.
 Metro: Rio de Janeiro’s subway system consists of two lines and 34 stations. The green line follows the
coastline, and the orange line runs farther inland. A single ride is R$3.5 (US$1.65), but passes with multiple
rides and passes that allow you to transfer to the bus system are also available. More information and
maps are available online. www.metrorio.com.br/en
São Paulo
 Bus: The bus system in São Paulo is very convenient, but heavy traffic during rush hours can cause long
delays. Fares are R$3 (US$1.4) each way, and can be paid for individually or with a card used for both
trains and buses. Route information is available online. www.emtu.sp.gov.br/EMTU/home.fss
 Taxi: Taxi cabs in São Paulo are white with a green sign on the roof. Taxis can be hailed on the street,
hired from taxi stands around the city or ordered by telephone. Some taxi companies, especially those
ordered by phone, have a fixed rate. As taxis in São Paulo are more expensive than other cities, be sure to
check the rate ahead of time.
 Metro and Train: With more than a dozen lines, São Paulo’s rail network reaches throughout the city and is
composed of both a subway and surface trains. A single ride is R$3.20 (US$1.50), and passengers can
purchase multi-use passes and passes that allow them to transfer to the bus system. A map of the routes
can be found online. www.metro.sp.gov.br/pdf/mapa-da-rede-metro.pdf
