Nas dinâmicas que a cidade de Ponta Delgada tem gerado no sentido de se tornar cada vez mais desenvolvida
e cosmopolita será inevitável referir a importância
que a construção do empreendimento das Portas
do Mar veio trazer à urbe micaelense. Aquela obra,
fundamental para o desenvolvimento da cidade,
da ilha e até da Região, tornou-se um incontornável ícone de Ponta Delgada e para todos os que
nos visitam a bordo dos cada vez mais frequentes navios de cruzeiros.
Aquele investimento é claramente uma mais-valia
para a cidade e extremamente atrativo para o incremento de escalas de turismo.
Between the development stages of Ponta Delgada, thanks
to which the city has become ever more attractive and cosmopolitan, it is impossible not to refer to the significance that the
construction of the complex ‘Portas do Mar’ has added to the main
city of São Miguel Island. This great work of civil engineering, a key
element for the development of the city, island and region, has become
a main icon of Ponta Delgada, especially for those who visit us arriving
aboard cruise ships, as increasingly happens.
This investment is clearly an added value to the city, being a highly
attractive element for the increase of passenger ships’ calls. It was
a bet won: since 2008 we continue in our trend towards growth.

Neste particular foi claramente uma aposta ganha e desde 2008 que a tendência é o crescimento. Se 2012 ficou referenciado
pelo facto dos portos açorianos terem suplantado as 100 escalas e os 100 mil passageiros, 2015 definiu novos patamares com
138 escalas e perto de 142 mil passageiros, dos quais 104 mil passaram pelas Portas dos Mar. No ano de todos os recordes,
fomos visitados todos os meses por navios de cruzeiros do que se pode concluir que o empreendimento Portas do Mar esteve
durante quase todo o ano com assinalável movimento.
Mas a importância do Terminal não deve ser entendida apenas no espaço ilha, mas também no contexto global do arquipélago, dado que o mesmo veio agilizar toda a logística inerente aos cruzeiros temáticos, cruzeiros esses que, com início e
terminus em Ponta Delgada, visitam a maioria, se não todas, as ilhas dos Açores, potenciando, assim, as economias locais.
Embora este empreendimento se tenha tornado referência na respetiva ilha, facto é que se tem revelado como potenciador
no desenvolvimento global da Região.
The year 2012 will be remembered as the year when the Azorean ports have increased to more than 100 stopovers and
100.000 passengers; the year 2015 has set new levels, with 138 stopovers and almost 142 mil passengers, 104.000
of which passed through ‘Portas do Mar’. 2015 really was a year of records: every month several cruise ships were
welcomed, and the complex ‘Portas do Mar’ has seen a considerable movement.
The new terminal has an importance which goes far beyond the island: in the context of the entire archipelago, is
has improved the whole of logistics concerning to thematic cruises. Starting and ending in Ponta Delgada, this kind
of cruise enables tourists to visit most of the Azorean islands (or all of them), strengthening their local economy.
Whilst it has become a reference in São Miguel Island, this investment has proven to be a particularly relevant
contribution to global development of the Region.

COME TO THE THEATER
Descendente da tradição dos cineteatros, que animaram a vida cultural do país desde meados do
século XX, este Teatro assume-se como depositário de uma história com 65 anos e, essencialmente,
como um espaço de construção do presente e do futuro.
Inaugurado em 31 de março de 1951, o Teatro Micaelense foi projetado pelo conceituado arquiteto
Raul Rodrigues de Lima, um especialista em salas de cinema e de teatro. Por iniciativa de
Francisco Luís Tavares, diretor-delegado da Companhia de Navegação Carregadores Açorianos,
e com o apoio da sociedade micaelense da altura, surgia então, em Ponta Delgada, um teatro
de grande dimensão, num espaço urbano expressamente rasgado para o albergar.
Durante cerca de quatro décadas, o Teatro Micaelense serviu a ilha de São Miguel com uma
programação regular, tendo-se constituído como uma das mais importantes estruturas da
vida cultural e social dos micaelenses. A partir de meados da década de 80, a quebra de
receitas que afetou os cineteatros um pouco por todo o mundo, a par com a degradação
do edifício, conduziram à inatividade e posterior encerramento.
Reabilitado pelo Governo Regional dos Açores, o Teatro Micaelense reabriu ao público
em 5 de setembro de 2004, sob projeto do arquiteto Manuel Salgado.
A descendent of the tradition of cine-theaters, which stimulated the country’s
cultural life from the mid 20th century onwards, this Theater takes on its place
as a depositary of a history of 65 years and, essentially, a space for building
the present and the future.
Inaugurated on the 31st of March of 1951, Teatro Micaelense was designed by
the renowned architect Raul Rodrigues de Lima, a specialist in cinema and
theater rooms.
Through the initiative of Francisco Luís Tavares, director-delegate of the
Companhia de Navegação Carregadores Açorianos, and with the support
of the São Miguel society of the time, then emerged in Ponta Delgada
a sizeable theater, in an urban space specifically stripped to host it.
O Teatro Micaelense presta um
serviço público no domínio da promoção cultural, através
da apresentação, produção e coprodução de atividades
nas mais diversas vertentes artísticas: do teatro à dança,
da música erudita ao jazz, do cinema às artes plásticas e
à fotografia. É um palco aberto à comunidade e pretende
ser um polo dinamizador no âmbito da criação artística,
proporcionando aos criadores locais um espaço de
divulgação do seu trabalho.
Paralelamente, e complementarmente, o Teatro Micaelense - Centro de Congressos assume-se como um instrumento privilegiado para o desenvolvimento do sector MI
(Meetings and Incentives) nos Açores, permitindo a realização de conferências, reuniões profissionais e outros
eventos sociais.

Micaelense provides a public service within
the field of cultural promotion, through the presentation,
production and co-production of activities from the
most diverse artistic strains: from theater to dance, from
classical music to jazz, from cinema to the visual arts and
photography. It is an open stage for the community and
intends to be a driving force in the field of artistic creation,
providing local creators with a space to present their work
to the public.
In parallel and complementarily, Teatro Micaelense Congress Hall takes on its place as a privileged instrument
for the development of the Meetings and Incentives sector in
the Azores, allowing for the holding of conferences, business
meetings and other social events.
For about four decades, Teatro Micaelense served the island of São
Miguel with regular programming, having become one of the most
important structures of São Miguel’s social and cultural life.
From the mid-80’s onwards, the fall in revenue which affected cinetheaters throughout the world, alongside with the deterioration of
the building, led to inactivity and, later, closed doors.
Rehabilitated by the Azores Regional Government, Teatro
Micaelense reopened its doors to the public on September
5th 2004, under the project of architect Manuel Salgado.

THE HONOR OF MARKI
O Coliseu Micaelense foi inaugurado a 10 de maio de 1917, com um
projeto de arquitetura de António Ayla Sanches que marcou uma
época de referência cultural no arquipélago, recebendo na altura
o nome de Coliseu Avenida.
Em 1950, passa a designar-se Coliseu Micaelense após ter sido
adquirido pela Companhia de Navegação Carregadores Açorianos, dirigida por Francisco Luís Tavares.
A partir dos anos oitenta, foi sendo progressivamente desativado, mantendo apenas os tradicionais Bailes de Carnaval,
até ficar de todo encerrado por avançada degradação das
suas instalações.
The Coliseu Micaelense opened on May 10th, 1917, as result
of an architecture project of António Ayla Sanches, which
marked a period of cultural reference in the archipelago,
receiving at the time the name of Coliseu Avenida.
In 1950, its name is changed to Coliseu Micaelense after
being acquired by the Companhia de Navegação Carregadores Açorianos, led by Francisco Luís Tavares.
After the eighties, it was gradually disabled, maintaining
only the traditional Carnival Balls, until its activity was
terminated due to advanced deterioration of its facilities.
Em 2002, a Câmara Municipal de Ponta Delgada adquiriu o Coliseu Micaelense e promoveu
a maior obra de recuperação da sua história de nove décadas.

In 2002, the Municipality of Ponta Delgada acquired the Coliseu
Micaelense and promoted the greatest work of restoration of its
history of nine decades.
On january 30th, 2005, the Coliseu was reborn into the world of
the culture. With a diverse program designed to meet the expectations of an eclectic community, the Coliseu is the welcoming hall of
the Municipality of Ponta Delgada and also undoubtedly of São Miguel.
Its beauty, historic character and energy are felt as we walk through its
hallways, making this historic building a living landmark of Azorean culture.

Praia Formosa (‘Beautiful Beach’), on the South coast of the
Island of Santa Maria, in the civil parish of Almagreira, is a
large indentation of the shoreline, characterized by several
natural elements that make this beach an excellent place:
the valley of Ribeira da Praia and its green hillsides form a
very beautiful landscape. When seen from the viewpoint of
Miradouro da Macela, this beach is really a stunning view.
The golden sandy beach (due to the existence of fine-grained limestone), with its clear and warm waters, make this
place a unique coastal bathing site in the Azores.

The sea and the islands are inseparable. From the 1,000 recorded shipwrecks, we have selected 25 sites that preserve events from the 15th
to the 19th centuries, time capsules that showcase episodes from the
great narratives of the history of the Azores and of the world. These
sites can be visited through scuba diving, free diving and/or through
companies that offer vessels with glass bottoms. The Guide covers sites from Formigas to Flores, including five archaeological parks, three
cemeteries of anchors, one area with cannons and 21 shipwrecks
from different nations and times.

O Roteiro visa a proteção dos bens, assim como a sua fruição pública. Estes variam
em relevância histórica, interesse patrimonial, integridade material e dificuldade
de mergulho. O acesso apenas poderá ser realizado por intermédio de núcleos
dos clubes navais e dos operadores das marítimo-turísticas especializadas, requisito indispensável para instituir uma conduta ética, que permita realizar a
atividade de forma confortável e segura para o mergulhador, sem prejuízo para

A publicitação do Roteiro será complementada em terra, onde se criarão
centros interpretativos. Apresentado na V Bienal de Turismo Subaquático,

O mar e as ilhas são indissociáveis. Dos 1000 naufrágios registados, selecionaram-se
25 locais, que apresentam histórias entre os séculos XV a XIX, cápsulas do tempo,
que encerram episódios das grandes narrativas da história dos Açores e do mundo.
Esses locais podem ser visitados através de mergulho de escafandro, em apneia e/
ou através de empresas com embarcações de fundos de vidro. O Roteiro estende-se
das Formigas às Flores, incluindo 5 parques arqueológicos, 3 cemitérios de âncoras,
1 núcleo de canhões e 21 naufrágios, de diversas nações e cronologias.

The Guide aims to protect the local heritage and allow
the general public to enjoy it. The sites feature variable historical relevance, interest in terms of
heritage, material integrity and difficulty in
terms of diving. Access to the sites can only
be gained through the specialized centres
of marine clubs and sea tourism operators,
an essential requirement for establishing
an ethical conduct that allows divers to
carry out this activity comfortably and safely, without harming marine species and
the archaeological sites. The publication of this
Guide will be complemented with the creation of
interpretive centres on land. It was presented at
the 5th Biennial of Underwater Tourism of the Azores at Graciosa Island, on December, 2015, and it will be
published by ATA (Azores Promotion Agency) at the beginning of the summer.

seja uma das experiências únicas a vivenciar nos Açores.
Com início no final da década de oitenta, poucos anos após a proibição da caça
à baleia, os Açores têm ocupado o seu lugar no mundo como um dos melhores sítios para se observar as cerca de 25 espécies de cetáceos, residentes e
migratórias, que aparecem no mar deste arquipélago. Uma verdadeira experiência a não perder!
Whale watching is one of the unique experiences that the Azores have to offer. If
started in the late eighties, a few years after the ban on whaling came into effect,
and the region now ranks as one of the best places in the world to see about 25
species of cetaceans, both resident and migratory, which can be spotted in the
sea of the archipelago. A truly great experience that you should not miss!

Entre as espécies mais comuns de se observar está o Cachalote (Physeter macrocephalus), o gigante dos mares imortalizado
no clássico Moby Dick, com dimensões que podem atingir os 18 metros de comprimento e as 44 toneladas de peso. Outras
espécies comuns nos mares dos Açores são a Baleia Azul (Balaenoptera musculus) e a Baleia Comum (Balaenoptera physalus).
Não nos podemos esquecer, ainda, do papel importante dos vigias que ficam em terra e que, sem os quais, a probabilidade
de avistar estas espécies seria muito menor. A presença das baleias também se faz sentir no património que foi recuperado
e preservado ao longo dos anos e que pode ser visitado nos museus públicos e privados existentes em diversas ilhas.
A apenas duas horas de avião, diretos de Portugal continental, está uma diversidade de atividades e inúmeras experiências.
Desde a natação com golfinhos, ao mergulho, para iniciados ou profissionais, passeios a pé e variadas, ótimas ondas para
surf e bodyboard, canoagem ou Stand-Up-Paddle nas lagoas ou no mar. A observação de cetáceos é apenas o início de
uma aventura pelas nove ilhas dos Açores.
Among the most common species, you can spot the Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus), the giant of the seas immortalised in Melville’s classic Moby Dick, whose dimensions that can reach up to 18 metres in length and 44 tonnes in weight.
Other common species in the sea of the Azores include the Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) and the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus). We also cannot forget the important role of those who stay on land without whom the likelihood of spotting these species would be much lower. The presence of whales on land can also be witnessed in the heritage that has been
recovered and preserved over the years and that can be visited in public and private museums that exist on several islands.
Just two hours direct flight from Portugal mainland, the Azores offers a diversity of activities to experience: diving, for beginners or professionals, walks and great waves for surfing and bodyboarding, kayaking or Stand-Up-Paddle in lakes or sea.
The whale watching is just the beginning of an adventure through the nine islands of the Azores.

ALCIDES’S STEAK
A carne açoriana apresenta singularidades que a tornam uma referência
gastronómica da região, sendo procurada por muitos apreciadores. Tendo
esta qualidade reconhecida, o prato que se distingue é o bife. Existem variadíssimas receitas, para todos os gostos e carteiras. Mas há bifes que se
destacam, como é o caso do Bife do Alcides.
Este prato regional, que conta com 60 anos de história, nasce com Alcides
Cabral de Melo. Não sabia cozinhar, mas tinha muita vontade de aprender e
não gostava de imitar os outros. Assim, com ajuda do senhor Manuel, um dos
seus cozinheiros, baseou-se na receita do então típico bife inglês e adicionou
pimenta e alho.
Azorean beef benefits from unique features that turn it into an icon of regional cuisine, being
sought after by many connoisseurs. With this widely recognized quality, steaks are the dish
that stands out. There are a great number of recipes for all tastes and purses. But some
steaks stand out, such as Alcides’s Steak.
The history of this regional dish goes back 60 years and starts with Alcides Cabral de Melo.
He did not know how to cook but was eager to learn and did not like to imitate others. So, with
the help of Manuel, one of his cooks, he based his steak on the recipe of the then typical English
steak and added pepper and garlic.
Pedro Melo, filho do senhor Alcides e o atual responsável pela continuação do seu legado,
conta como é feito o bife, os ingredientes utilizados e como a receita se mantém igual
durante este tempo todo, alterando só o modo como é servido o prato – as batatas
passaram a ser servidas à parte. Para a confeção do Bife do Alcides terá de se utilizar
carne de qualidade, com um peso compreendido entre 220 e 360 gramas. Junta-se sal,
alho e pimenta da terra dando-lhe um gosto tão regional e tão nosso. O bife é frito em
óleo e é flamejado. A duração deste processo de fritura varia de acordo com o gosto de
cada um. A acompanhar é servida a batata frita caseira, impreterivelmente regional.
Apesar da já considerável longevidade deste prato, Pedro Melo acredita que o Bife do
Alcides tem muito futuro pois há cada vez mais procura.
Pedro Melo, Alcides’s son and currently responsible for continuing his legacy, has told us
how the steak is prepared, the ingredients used and how the recipe has remained the
same throughout time, only changing the way how the dish is served – chips are now
served as a side. To prepare an Alcides’s Steak, you have to use quality beef weighing
between 220 and 360 grams. You then add salt, garlic and red pepper sauce that provide it with a regional and local flavour. The steak is fried in oil and flamed. The duration of
the frying process varies according to each person’s taste. Homemade chips, imperatively made from regional potatoes, are served as a side dish.
Despite the considerable longevity of this dish, Pedro Melo believes that the steak has
a great future as there is growing demand.

Several trails and walking paths allow exploration of the islands in a
unique way, with different degrees of difficulty and physical effort.
The adventure continues in marine and inland waters! Here, you
can find perfect waves for surfing, bodyboarding or other less
widespread sports. Stand-up paddling or canoeing, on the lakes
or on the sea, is just a part of an unforgettable trip due to thermal
waters. You should not miss a relaxing bath after a day
of so much adrenaline!
All the Azorean islands have volcanic origins. The archipelago extends along a
west-northwest to east-southeast orientation (between 36°”44° North latitudes
and 25°”32° West longitudes), and the island of Flores is the westernmost point of
Europe. According to the 2011 Census, the population in the Azores was 246,102,
living in an area of 2,325 square kilometers. The islands are divided into three
groups: the Eastern Group (São Miguel and Santa Maria), the Central Group
(Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial) and the
Western Group (Flores and Corvo).
With its mild climate throughout the year, it is so easy to island-hop

Dialing 112 does not necessarily mean an ambulance will
be dispatched. The call handler will decide what is appropriate.

Is there a different response in different situations?
The response time can vary. Serious cases which require an
ambulance response are prioritized. The ambulance immediately
leaves the station in case of real emergency; having regard to
a lesser degree of urgency, the response time ranges between
40 and 120 minutes.
Who answers when I dial 112?
Call-takers are Police officers. Depending on the situation,
they can transfer your call to the appropriate service.
What types of questions will I be asked when I call 112?
You must supply all the requested information.
If I need an ambulance, who would be able to help me
with that?
Your call to 112 will be directed to a medical Emergency
Call Center. The call will be answered by a nurse.
Do I really need to speak to a nurse to call an ambulance?
Yes, you must speak to a fully trained and experienced
nurse in such a situation, because he/she can make
all the difference, identifying the problem and giving all
necessary advice.

Nascido em 1956, em Ponta Delgada, Duarte Toste iniciou carreira na Marinha Mercante em 1979, após o curso superior de
Pilotagem, ingressando na CTM para desempenhar funções de
Praticante de Piloto, 3º Piloto e 2º Piloto. Na Vinave, foi 1º Piloto,
Imediato e Comandante. Mais tarde, assumiu funções na Junta Autónoma do Porto de Ponta Delgada (JAP), posteriormente
Administração dos Portos das Ilhas de S. Miguel e Santa Maria
(APSM), e hoje Portos dos Açores. Foi aí que surgiu o desafio
de liderar a criação da empresa pública de transporte marítimo de passageiros da Região.
Born in Ponta Delgada in 1956, Duarte Toste began his career
in the merchant navy in 1979 after completing his training,
joining CTM as a Trainee Officer, 3rd Officer and 2nd Officer. At
Vinave, he was a 1st Officer, Chief Officer and Captain. Later
he worked at the Ponta Delgada Port Authority, which was
transformed into the Port Authority of the Islands of São
Miguel and Santa Maria and is today part of the Port Authority of the Azores. It was during this time that he was
challenged to lead the creation of a public company for
the transport of passengers by sea in the Region.
A decisão de aceitar presidir ao primeiro Conselho de Administração
da Atlânticoline foi tomada com ponderação. A convicção de que a
Região devia ter um modelo de transporte marítimo capaz de contribuir para a dinamização turística e para a mobilidade dos açorianos, até porque, “à data, o transporte aéreo era caro”, foi fator
que pesou na decisão.
Conciliar horários, lidar com a sazonalidade e recrutar pessoal
de hotel staff, área onde não existiam na Região profissionais
certificados, foram as dificuldades iniciais. “O fretamento do
primeiro navio, Ilha Azul só aconteceu depois de conhecermos outras realidades, pelo que todo o trabalho de análise,
pesquisa de mercado e levantamento de necessidades foi
essencial”, acrescenta.
Hoje, o Comandante continua a não ter dúvidas de que “o
serviço público de transporte marítimo de passageiros na
Região é da maior importância para o aumento do potencial
turístico de cada ilha”.
He accepted to chair the first Board of Directors of Atlânticoline after much consideration. His conviction that the
Region should have a sea transport model that is able to
contribute to the tourism promotion and to the mobility
of the Azoreans, because ‘to date air travel has been
expensive’, was a decisive factor that weighed in his
decision.
Harmonizing schedules, dealing with seasonality
and recruiting hotel staff, an area where there were
no certified professionals in the Region, were the
initial difficulties. ‘We only chartered our first ship,
Ilha Azul, after learning about other realities; therefore, all the work in terms of analysis, market
research and needs assessment was essential’,
he added.
Today, the Captain is still convinced that ‘the sea
transport of passengers as a public service is of
utmost importance to the Region to increase
the tourism potential of each island’.

SAFETY ON BOARD
O comportamento dos passageiros pode determinar o sucesso ou
o fracasso em caso de incidente, pelo que é indispensável ter em
consideração as orientações que se seguem.
Embarque: Deve estar à hora indicada no cais; respeite as regras
relativamente às bagagens de mão e de porão; não corra em cima
do cais; se estiver de carro, respeite a indicações da tripulação;
trave o carro e deixe engatado na 1ª mudança.
Em Viagem: É muito importante estar atento a todas as
indicações transmitidas pela tripulação, no início de cada
viagem; assista atentamente ao vídeo de segurança; não
é permitido fumar no interior do navio; não é permitido o
uso de garrafas e copos de vidro; é proibido permanecer
de tronco nu assim como colocar os pés em cima das
cadeiras/sofás; Sempre que ache necessário, chame a
tripulação. Não hesite nunca em pedir ajuda.
On Board: Please listen/watch any instruction by
crew before the travel; please watch the safety
video; smoking is banned in all indoor areas; it is
not allowed to use glass bottles or cups; passengers
cannot be bare-chested or put their feet on the
chairs/sofas; whenever necessary or convenient,
call a crew member. If you need any help, please
do not hesitate to ask the crew.
Passenger behavior is a decisive factor in the event of
an emergency. Please make a point of observing the
following safety instructions.
Embarkation: You must arrive at the pier on time; please
comply with rules regarding hand and hold luggage; do
not run on the pier; passengers arriving with their own
vehicle must position the vehicle as directed by the boarding
personnel; vehicles embarked on the parking deck must be
locked, engaged in first gear with the hand-brake applied.

Desembarque: Prepare o seu desembarque de forma calma
e ordeira; não se esqueça da bagagem de mão no interior do
navio; não corra; cuidado ao descer as escadas; ao recolher
a bagagem dos carrinhos, certifique-se de que é a sua; se
estiver a desembarcar com a viatura, respeite as indicações
dos tripulantes.
Emergência: As situações de emergência a bordo de um navio
são decretadas pelo Comandante ou pelos oficiais de serviço.
O Alarme geral faz-se soar (7 toque curtos e 3 longos • • • • •
• • ■■■) e o passageiro deve ficar no seu lugar e aguardar que
a tripulação dê indicações sobre o que fazer.
Numa primeira fase deverá vestir o colete salva vidas, (solicitar
um para crianças se for o caso), e depois AGUARDAR que o
encaminhem para as saídas de emergências; As tripulações
treinam semanalmente estes procedimentos pelo que estão
muito bem preparadas para executarem instintivamente
os procedimentos obrigatórios de abandono do navio. É
fundamental que os passageiros tenham confiança na
estrutura técnica do navio (tripulantes) e não tomarem atitudes
precipitadas.

Disembarkation: Disembark in an orderly and safe manner;
make sure that you take all of your belongings with you when
leaving the vessel; don’t run; be careful using the stairs; please
confirm that the baggage you take from baggage carts is yours;
disembark your vehicle as directed by the boarding personnel.
Emergency: An emergency situation is declared by the Captain
or by navigation officers. Should an emergency situation arise,
alarm signal will be sounded all over the ship (7 short tones and
3 long tones • • • • • • • ■■■). Passengers must remain in
their place and wait for the crew’s instructions.
In the first stage, the lifejackets are to be put on (lifejackets
for children are also available: you can request one of them, if
necessary) then they MUST WAIT. The ship’s crew will lead the
passengers to the rescue stations. Emergency drills, including
training in evacuating/guiding passengers out of the danger
area to assembly stations, are held weekly, so the crew
members can 'instinctively' perform their mandatory tasks if
the order to abandon ship has been given. It is of fundamental
importance that our passengers have confidence in the technical
structure of the ship (our crew) thus avoiding hasty reactions.
