')* Delphi Secondary Alternative School (formerly ASE 2) is an alternative program that offers
only Academic courses in grades 9 and 10, as well as Grade 11 and 12 courses leading to
university and college. Small classes, independent and group learning, extensive computer
use, and an integrated approach to curriculum are important features of the program.
Delphi S.A.S. is designed for self-motivated, independent, and intellectually curious learners
who enjoy a challenge and demonstrate a commitment to learning, and who are responsible
and capable of handling decreased structure. The timetable combines regularly scheduled,
compulsory classes with research periods so those students can direct more time to
independent and collaborative study. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) a teaching method
used by McMaster University's Medical School and Harvard's Business School is one of the
learning strategies used to promote critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Since the inception of the Millennium Scholarship by Jean Chretien in 2000, ASE 2 has
had seven winners of this prestigious award. At Delphi S.A.S. students are encouraged to
become involved in leadership development and other co-curricular activities. Our flexible
timetable provides the opportunity for students to pursue interests outside of the school that
might not be possible in more traditional school settings. The development of the whole
person through positive and mutually helpful interaction with staff and students is essential to
the school's concept of a well rounded education.

In addition to the regular instructional program mandated by The Ontario
Curriculum , our school offers optional programs. Details of these programs can
be found in the Choices document available on the TDSB web (TDSB.on.ca). A
hardcopy is provided to students and parents in January of each year to assist
them in choosing courses for the following school year.

A variety of special education programs and services are offered to meet the
needs of all students, including students with exceptionalities, such as
behavioural, communication, intellectual, physical and multiple learning
disabilities. Students' exceptionalities are identified through a formal review
process undertaken by an Identification, Placement and Review Committee
(IPRC).

Information about the
success of our programs
comes from a wide variety
of student assessments.
These assessments are
based on clear
expectations for all
learners, consistent with
those described in The
Ontario Curriculum.
The primary purpose of student assessment is to improve learning.
Assessment has the greatest potential to improve learning when it is an
integral part of classroom activities. Teachers assess student progress
towards achieving the expectations on an ongoing basis by using
strategies such as projects, class presentations, homework assignments,
classroom observations, portfolios of student work, and tests.
Schools use assessment information and information from other sources
to make informed decisions for school improvement planning. Schools
identify areas of strength as well as areas that require improvement. Input
is obtained from a variety of sources such as student assessments,
teacher feedback, parent feedback, and community surveys. In this way,
schools monitor, celebrate and improve their efforts in providing a
supportive and challenging learning environment for all their students.

At the TDSB School Board meeting, August 30,
2006, "Alternative Scarborough Education 2" (ASE
2) became "Delphi Secondary Alternative School".
One of our main goals this year is, in a variety of
ways, to continue to inform the TDSB community of
the name change. In doing so we hope also to
convey the message of the excellent opportunities
for Student Success offered by Delphi S.A.S. The
Mission of Delphi S.A.S., is to providing an
academically focused school, promoting
independence, critical thinking and collaboration in a
small, congenial environment. While our philosophy
remains the same we will continue to insure that it
meets the needs of our students and community. To
this end we will modify and enrich our curriculum,
curriculum delivery and co-curricular activities, to
keep our program revitalized and strong.
A Grand Fundraising event is planned for the Spring
of 2007 to support our school initiative of alleviating
the suffering of the aboriginal peoples in northern
Ontario.
With regard to curriculum, we plan on continuing our
successful Literacy Program in order to again
achieve 100% success rate for students writing the
Literacy test for the first time as they did last year.
We plan to continue our successful Numeracy
Program to achieve an average of Level 3 for our
grade 9 students in the EQAO test of mathematics.
Extra curricular events include: ski trip, theatre trips
to see Shakespeare plays, Multicultural pot-luck
supper, and year end barbeque and graduation
prom.

Parents/guardians are welcome to contact the Head of Program or other staff to discuss their child's progress. Two
formal interview evenings are held each year.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to make appointments the with individual staff or a staff team, to determine the best
pedagogical approach to situations that may be of a more significant concern.
Two Open House evenings are held each year, one in November and one in January for students in grade 8 looking for
options for grade 9.
Formal reports are mailed home 5 times per year. Interim are mailed home in October, mid-semester in November,
semester 1 final in February, semester 2 mid-term in April and final reports in June.
Delphi S.A.S. has an informal parent/guardian/community council, "Delphi Community Association". Parents/guardians,
staff and other adult members meet regularly (usually once per month) to discuss ways of supporting the school.
The D.C.A. (Delphi Community Association), sponsors a barbeque in the fall to welcome new families into the Delphi
S.A.S. community and celebrate the beginning of the school year.
The D.C.A. has also been involved in supporting facilities improvements, assisting with the name change process and
fundraising for charitable causes.

Many of our students have been involved with Leaders' Today, in association with "Free the Children", to develop
leadership skills and become sensitized to the plight ot children in Developing countries.
We have partnered with Chapters/Indigo to raise money for our charitable initiatives. Our Charitable Causes Leadership
Group organized a drive to collect toys and other items for Christmas charities.
