Message of Mercy
Jesus to St. Faustina
My daughter, do not pay so much attention to the vessel
of grace as to the grace itself which I give you, because
you are not always pleased with the vessel, and then the
graces, too, become deficient. I want to guard you from
that, and I want you never to pay attention to the vessel
in which I send you My grace. Let all the attention of
your soul be concentrated on responding to My grace as
faithfully as possible. (5)
Mensaje de la Divina Misericordia
Jesús a Santa Faustina
fielmente posible. ( 5 )
Mensagem da Divina Misericórdia
Jesus a Santa Faustina
a maior fé possivel. (5)
From the Pastor’s Desk
This weekend, after the Saturday 4:00PM Mass, the
parish will celebrate a simple farewell to Sister Margaret
Rose, who is being transferred by the Salesian Sister
Provincial from our parish community after ten years of
selfless and dedicated service to all of our children, both in
the school and most especially in our religious education
program. Thank you and farewell, Sister Margaret Rose!
During this past year, Sister has done a
‘YEOMAN’S task in bringing together the parish programs
of Holy Rosary and Corpus Christi—we owe her a
tremendous debt of gratitude! Some 635 young people were
able to learn more about their Catholic Faith because of her
efforts and strong leadership. In these past weeks, ever
keeping the needs of the young people before her own, she
has been working very clearly with our new Religious
Education Coordinator, Mrs. Irma Austin so that our
program will not miss a beat in spite of the transition. In
fact, this September, our religious education program will
join the four Port Chester churches together and we will
have some 950+ young people in religious education! While
I thank Sister Margaret Rose for all of her work, I want to
say a special thanks to Mrs. Irma Austin, our new
coordinator, for taking on this huge responsibility. Thank
you, Mrs. Austin!
As we bid farewell to Sister Margaret Rose this
weekend, it is a time for us to reflect on the importance of
after school religious education for our children. In the
Archdiocese of New York, our Catholic elementary schools
are caring for some 25,000 young people, while our parish
based religious education programs are now caring some
100,000+ young people! This represents a major shift in
how we need to educate our young people in our Catholic
Faith. In his recent letter On Love in the Family, our Holy
Father, Pope Francis reminds parents that they “...can never
completely delegate the moral formation of their children to
others. However, in the same letter he emphasized the
importance of our Catholic Schools and the importance of
religious education. Nothing or no one can replace the
family, especially in today’s culture. But at the same time
the family needs the help of the Church to educate their
children in the faith. With so many of our young people not
in our Catholic Schools, we must try to do everything we
can to provide a solid, consistent and well-rounded religious
education program. We are making efforts to try to do this;
it is a serious responsibility of the parish to provide such a
program and of the parents to make sure their children
participate in it and take it in all seriousness.
As we begin this new phase in our parish merger, I
urge all of us, whether our children are in Catholic School
or our religious education program to do all we can to
educate them to view the world with the love of Jesus and
who can understand life with a view to serve God.
God bless you!
Eu agradeço a Ir.

Welcome, Irma Monserrate Austin
Irma Monserrate Austin was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Her father, Andres Cortez Chaparro was born in
Aguada, Puerto Rico. When Andres was seven years old, his mother, Juanita, passed away at age 29 and Andres
was taken in by a kind family where he worked in their bakery and attended school through 5th grade. At age 12
he left school to work in the sugarcane plantations of Puerto Rico and at 17 he traveled to Hartford where he met
and married Irma’s mother in 1957.
Irma’s mother, Monserrate Roman Chaparro was born in Anasco, Puerto Rico. Monserrate’s educational aspirations were disrupted by personal challenges and after she had raised her family, she went back to school earning
her high school diploma in 1972 at the age of 47. All of her children attended her graduation ceremony. Monserrate’s continuing education is centered around her Catholic Faith Formation.
In the early 1920s, Irma’s maternal grandparents, Juan and Santa Roman, took over the running of two grammar
schools established by Juan’s parents. They continued the family legacy of providing educational opportunities for
the children in the barrios of Quebrada Larga and Caracol in Anasco, Puerto Rico for over 70 years. Irma’s mother and her 11 siblings all attended the grammar schools and volunteers served as teachers. Santa Roman used her
kitchen to offer a meal program for the students. In the 1960’s, they received funding to build a small cafeteria.
Juan Roman served as the principal and the schools remained open and operational until 1983.
Irma’s grandfather also had a thriving coffee plantation business which provided jobs for families in neighboring
communities. When Irma was in grade school, she lived one summer with her grandparents learning the manufacturing and distribution of the coffee from beginning to end. This experience had a lasting impact on Irma and set
the tone for the importance of taking care of the land, people and providing for a community.
Irma attended elementary and high school in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1979 she graduated with honors from
Hartford Public High School and received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Fairfield University in
1983. Shortly after graduation, she began her professional career at Xerox Corporation. In her 12 years at Xerox,
Irma held various roles all focused on customer service and training. She achieved a Master of Science in Educational Computing from Iona College while working at Xerox. Later she joined Microsoft Corporation and in her
15 years at Microsoft, she implemented many projects all focused on collaboration and teamwork.
Irma comes from a close-knit family and her parents and siblings have motivated her to work hard and to always
give back to the community. Irma served as a board member of the Lois Bronz Childcare Center (LBCC) in
White Plains, NY and working with the Education Committee, she collaborated on projects to help build up Parent Participation and strong Model Teachers as well as Hispanic Outreach for LBCC.
An important element of Irma’s life is her family strong catholic spiritual upbringing. She has served as a catechist for 22 years teaching various levels and is currently enrolled in a catholic leadership program for the Archdiocese of New York. While at Saint John the Evangelist Church in White Plains, Irma launched a parent outreach
program for religious education families in order to strengthen the role of the family in their child’s religious education and spiritual formation.
Irma resides in White Plains, New York with her husband Bryant Austin of 28 years. They have two daughters,
Sei Ra and Shakisha. She enjoys time with her grandchildren, Rehzon, True, Ezekiel and Xi-Yen. Irma embraces
teaming opportunities to help build out strong and vibrant programs and take on new challenges. She is looking
forward to serving her ministry as Coordinator of Religious Education for our Parishes of Port Chester, New York.
