Volume 1 Number 2 2009 Quarterly Chamber Honors the Memory of Its Founder V icente Juliano Bonnard, President Emeritus Business Programs” at Cornell University, a of the Brazilian-American Chamber of founding member of the “Business Institute for Commerce, Inc., passed away on June 2, Brazilian Studies” at Pace University and a founding 2009, at the North Shore Hospital. He was 82. Mr. Bonnard was a founding member of the member of the “Business Institute” at San Diego State University. He served as Chairman of its Organizational Committee until his passing. From 1948 to 1967 Mr. Bonnard was Head of the Brazilian Aeronautical Commission’s New York Office. The panel provided an overview of cross- border tax issues faced by Brazilian and U.S. companies as a result of the financial crisis, and also offered insight into tax challenges and opportunities during the economic crisis, including use and acceleration of losses, use of tax attributed to acquired companies and tax implications of debt work-outs. During his inspiring presentation, Mr. Mesquita stressed that Brazil’s decision to cut its primary budget surplus goal should be seen as a government attempt to limit damage to the economy during the global recession. He also emphasized that the monetary easing campaign started by the Central Bank in January was already having a positive effect on economic activity, with household consumption expected to rise 1.6% in 2009 on the back of improving labor markets.
