DIARY DATES Week 8, Term 2 – Thursday 19 June 2014
DIARY DATES 20 June LINC Program 2-3pm 23 June Uniform Shop open 8.45am 26 June Aboriginal Technology Performance Week 8, Term 2 – Thursday 19 June 2014 Communication: You need to ensure that the Front Office has your current contact information including phone numbers and email addresses. This is to make sure that we can contact you in case of any emergency and that you are receiving our weekly correspondence. Today every child will bring home this double-sided note in hard copy so that we can guarantee that every family is receiving our regular communication. Please email the Front Office at [email protected] with your preferred email address and updated phone numbers if you are not currently receiving electronic correspondence or you have changed your work, home or mobile number recently. Currently, the Education and Training Directorate are updating the Garran Primary School website. The school is liaising with the IT sector within the Directorate to make our revamped website interactive and user-friendly. This may take several months to complete but will result in a more functional website. At the same time, we are attempting to update our policies, practices and information on the current website. Garran Primary School App: Great News! Our school mobile phone App is up and running. It is a little application that sits on your phone and gives you instant access to our school information when you click on it, 24/7. The app gives parents the ability to instantly access newsletters without going to the website, or to send in an absence note whilst you stand outside the school because you forgot to write a paper note! To download it to your smartphone by going to either the Apple App Store or Android Google Play Market and search for Garran Primary School. Once you have found it press install or download. Students’ Semester One Academic Reports: Student reports will be sent home in Week Ten which commences Monday 30 June 2014. The report provides parents with detailed information regarding their child’s academic and social progress. We have refined our school report templates to make sure that they align to the evolving Australian Curriculum. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress, please make an appointment to see your child’s class teacher. Family Contribution: In conjunction with this note, a letter about Family Contributions has also been sent home with your child today. This contains updated information about the new Family Contribution which has been approved by the Garran Primary School Board. Please take the time to read this letter and if you have any queries, please contact Jennifer at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your support. Nationally Consistent Collection of Data: The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) project collects data from schools about the number of students who require adjustments to participate in education. It will present a national picture of the supports schools provide students. From 2015, this information will be collected in every school across Australian, every year. The purpose of the process is to help governments to target support and resources in schools to help all students reach their potential. During Term Two 2014 all ACT Public Schools will be taking part in the NCCD. Schools will identify students who need adjustments and are identified as meeting a broad definition of disability. This definition is based on the Disability Standards for Education 2005 which is an inclusive definition of what constitutes a disability and does not necessarily require a medical or professional diagnosis. A letter will be sent home to families of students that have been identified as requiring adjustments and supports. This letter will outline the process and ask for your permission to include your child in the data collection. No names or personal information is collected as part of the collection process and students. More information about the NCCD can be found at the Australian Government Department of Education website. http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability The Hospital Development: We are meeting regularly with representatives from Hindmarsh Constructions and the National Capital Private Hospital with regards to the construction currently being undertaken at the private hospital. We would like to acknowledge the high level of respect we have been shown by the coordinators of this project. Together we have created guidelines focusing on the safety of our children. A map of the Traffic Management Procedures is on display in the foyer of the Front Office for your perusal. If you have any issues, please email Jennifer at [email protected] We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the National Capital Private Hospital for upgrading our car park and contributing funds to cover the major cost of the boom gate. The Boom Gate: In our continuous endeavour to improve the traffic situation at Garran Primary School, including the availability of parking spaces, a boom gate will be constructed at the entrance of the staff car park. The construction for the boom gate will commence tomorrow Friday 20 June at 4pm. It is anticipated that the boom gate will be in operation early next term. The boom gate will not be operational during student arrival and departure times and all parents will be provided with access via a code. Request for Parental Involvement in Ensuring the Safety of our Students: In numerous states and territories across Australia including NSW and Western Australia, they have volunteer parents and grandparents who are known as ‘School Crossing Supervisors’ otherwise known as ‘Lollipop Ladies and Gentlemen’. We are seeking volunteers to stand at the crossings on both Gilmore Crescent and Kitchener Street for 25 minutes each afternoon from 2:55pm. If we have a number of parents who could support us with this important endeavour, we could organise a roster so you may only be rostered on every so often. Please contact Jennifer at [email protected]. Garran Primary School P&C 5c Drive: It’s time to clean out your wallet for any loose change! Every day next week, the School House Captains will be collecting 5c coins from students across the school. This is to kick-start our fundraising for our biannual Garran Primary School Fiesta! We all were writing a procedure on how to make French Crêpes. Our procedures got put in the Garran Gazette because we used clear language to describe the method. We set them out properly using punctuation and clear language. We used command verbs and adverbs. We kept our steps simple and didn’t use too many. To make the end fun we finished off with French words like “voila” – there you are! and “Bon Appetit” – Enjoy! We hope you like our procedures and try them out. Jennifer Hall - Principal 6205 5844 http://www.garranps.act.edu.au Sally Vardy - School Board 0409 711 889 Yesterday, the 5/6 girls AFL team took part in the James Hird Cup at Reid Oval. The girls performed strongly in their first two games against Trinity and Chapman finishing on top of their pool. The next game was against a very confident Radford, who had promised to beat us earlier in the day. However, it was Garran who had the last laugh winning comfortably. In the final game, we faced Queanbeyan with the winner taking home the James Hird Cup. After a tightly fought first half, Queanbeyan proved too strong and were worthy winners. I would like to congratulate the girls on finishing runners up and for the outstanding team work and sportsmanship they showed throughout the day. The team consisted of: Maya Berry, Elise Boulton, Anna Chung, Isabel Cruz Clare, Tarrah Delgado, Katie Fonoti, Jacinda Hledik, Olivia Lacey, Olivia Lewis, Amber Mollison, Charlotte Mueller, Nevinka Perera, Bidushi Paudel and Stephanie Waldron. Well done girls! Alistair Scherer
