The Jacarandas are no longer in
bloom… but not to worry. This simply
means that it’s summer once again
in Lisbon! After days of intense
celebration during the month of June,
the city takes on a different rhythm as
the summer proceeds and the days
grow longer. Suddenly we’re more
aware of ourselves and our brief
moments of contemplation when we
find ourselves hoping that time will
last, giving us the illusion that, for
once, time will obey us, free us.
Thus, this is the moment in which
we bask tranquilly in the great city
of Lisbon, letting its light invade us, its
spaces inhabit us, its unusual silence
capture us, where we’re left hanging,
expecting…
Where a being seeks existence and
an emotion seeks expression, one
encounters the schedule of events
included in Com’Out Lisbon. With this
program we return for one month to a
great variety of settings – squares,
gardens, belvederes, neighborhoods –
and the most diverse arts and
entertainment: cinema, music, visual
arts…
In this way, we understand that film
never limited itself to the flat surface of
a screen; that music can prolong space
and expand time; that the ravens of
Lisbon still crowd the mind and
awaken the eye; that sometimes people,
distant from us, have one voice that is
worth listening to.
A program that carries within
itself the wanderings and the escape of
a different city, one made of space,
imagination, and freedom, within
which we await an enchanting
experience, with the sun setting and
the serene river in the background…

Los jacarandás ya no están en flor. Eso
quiere decir que vuelve a ser verano en
Lisboa. Tras las jornadas de intensas
celebraciones que junio nos reservó, la
ciudad cobra otro ritmo en los días
largos. Súbitamente, nos mostramos
más atentos a nosotros mismos
y a los pequeños momentos que
contemplamos, y esperamos que
el tiempo se detenga, brindándonos la
ilusión de que, en esta ocasión, nos
obedece y libera. Es este, por lo tanto,
el momento de vivir tranquilamente
Lisboa y dejar que su luz nos invada,
que sus espacios nos habiten y que un
inusual silencio nos atrape,
suspendidos, expectantes...
Entre un ser que anhela ser vivencia y
una emoción que anhela ser
experiencia, se encuentra la
programación de Lisboa na Rua. Con
ella, regresamos durante un mes a
variadísimos escenarios —plazas,
jardines, miradores, barrios — y a
multitud de propuestas: cine, música,
artes plásticas...
De este modo, comprenderemos
que el cine nunca se limitó a la
superficie plana de la pantalla, que la
música puede prolongar el espacio y
dilatar el tiempo, que los cuervos de
Lisboa aún pueblan nuestro
pensamiento y despiertan nuestra
mirada, y que la gente —en ocasiones,
distante— tiene una voz que merece la
pena escuchar.
Una programación que transporta en
sí misma el ocio y la evasión de una
ciudad a otra hecha de espacio,
imaginación y libertad en la que
esperamos que sea feliz con el sol en lo
alto y el río, sereno, al fondo...

> Big Band (also called Orchestra) is a
type of ensemble associated with jazz
music that typically brings together
around 18 musicians and became popular
during the swing era (1930-40). In contrast
with smaller formations in which music
could be created spontaneously, the music
played by Big Bands is subject to
arrangements and more careful prior
preparation. Of the innumerous Big Bands
that marked the “swing” period in the
U.S.A., those of Fletcher Henderson, Count
Basie, Benny Goodman, and Duke
Ellington stand out as some of the major
highlights of the era. As happens with jazz
and other forms of art, the diverse styles of
music for Big Band also went through
transformations. The appearance in the
1940s of a new language (bebop) that
favored small formations caused many
orchestras to disappear and gave birth to
others such as those of Billy Eckstine or
Dizzy Gillespie. It was, however, between
1950 and 1970 that perhaps the most
diverse changes in direction occurred—the
period in which conductors and arrangers
like Gil Evans, Sun Ra, and George Russell
introduced cool, free, classical, and rock
elements into their music. Today one can
find orchestras practicing all styles of jazz;
some, largely European, practice
avant-garde jazz/music as is/was the case
with the Globe Unity Orchestra, Vienna
Art Orchestra or Italian Instabile
Orchestra (among innumerous others). In
Portugal the process started later but it’s
still going on. (began later but the country
is on its way). The materialization of a
series of Big Band concerts happened in
the year of 2010. With the success of it’s
first edition it was important that the
project had continuity and kept on giving
this musical genre mainly to a less
attentive audience and not only jazz lovers,
most of all because it is a musical
composition that for its technical features
it is less available to the audiences. This is a
renewed opportunity that, in 2011, should
not be missed. The Big Bands presented in
this program do not represent the entire
universe of Big Bangs within our country.
However, the diverse sound and style (and
distinct sound) of these five orchestras give
a broad example of what our conductors
and arrangers have to offer. Enjoy the 5

es un ensemble asociado a la música de jazz
que normalmente reúne a cerca de 18
músicos y que se popularizó durante la
época swing (1930-40). Frente a las
pequeñas formaciones, en las que la
música se puede crear de un modo más
espontáneo, la música que interpretan las
big bands está sujeta a arreglos y a una
preparación previa más cuidada. De entre
las innumerables big bands que marcaron
el periodo swing en EE.UU., destacan las
de Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie,
Benny Goodman y Duke Ellington. Tal
como sucede con el jazz y otras formas de
arte, también los diversos estilos de música
para big band sufrieron transformaciones.
La aparición en los años 40 de un nuevo

atento, y no solo a los amantes del jazz, este
género musical que por sus características
logísticas está menos accesible a todos. Una
nueva oportunidad recuperada, para
aprovechar en 2011. Las big bands que se
presentan en este programa representan
todo el universo de las big bands del país.
Los distintos estilos y sonoridades de estas
cinco orquestas son el retrato de lo que
nuestros maestros y arreglistas nos pueden

> With nearly 10 years of existence
Reunion Big Jazz Band (RBJB) occupies a
prominent place in the national
dissemination of orchestral jazz. Along
these years RBJB has become a take-off
point for dozens of young musicians that,
in the meantime, have affirmed
themselves as important names in the
national jazz scene (panorama). One of the
factors that has contributed most to the
customized sound of RBJB since the
beginning has been, without a doubt, the
“multi-talent” involved in some of the
band’s elements, embodied in arrangements of “standards” and in original
compositions, which the orchestra takes
particular pleasure in playing. The fact
that Johannes Krieger recently took over
direction of the RBJB reinforced this
tendency, as Krieger—besides being an
excellent trumpeter—is also an arranger
and a prolific and elegant composer. In
this second edition of the series “The Art of
Big Band” RBJB (Reunion) will give
particular attention to the interpretation
of themes and arrangements written by
members of the band.

Reunion Big Jazz Band (RBJB) ocupa un
lugar destacado en la divulgación
nacional del jazz para orquesta. A lo largo
de estos años, la RBJB fue la rampa de
lanzamiento para decenas de jóvenes
músicos que han llegado a ser nombres
importantes del panorama jazzístico
nacional. Uno de los factores que desde
sus inicios más contribuyó a la sonoridad
personalizada de la RBJB ha sido, sin
duda, el “multitalento” de alguno de sus
miembros, materializado en arreglos de
“standards” y de composiciones originales
que la orquesta interpreta con particular
gusto. El hecho de que la dirección de la
RBJB haya sido asumida recientemente
por Johannes Krieger vino a reforzar esta
vertiente, ya que Krieger, además de un
excelente trompetista, es también un
arreglista y compositor prolífico y
elegante. En esta segunda edición del
ciclo “El arte de la big band”, la RBJB dará
prioridad a la interpretación de temas y
arreglos de miembros de la banda.

> With various albums recorded with
renowned guest musicians, the
Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra (OJM) is the
most “international” and one of the most
dynamic orchestras of Portuguese Jazz.
Created in 1999 under the direction of
Carlos Azevedo and Pedro Guedes, the
orchestra develops a line of orientation
that favors the creation of its own
repertoire and the organization of specific
projects to which soloists, conductors, and
composers of international renown are
invited. Through the diversity and
imagination of the programs they
present, as well as through the regular
issuing of their discography internationally and their continual growth, the OJM
truly assumes the role of a national jazz
orchestra. In their ten years of activity,
some major highlights include the closing
concert of Porto 2001, the recreation of
Sketches of Spain with the Remix
Ensemble, the presentation of the music
of Carla Bley, the recording of the CD
Portology with Lee Konitz, the recording
of the CD OJM invites Chris Cheek, and
the concerts with John Hollenbeck and
Dee Dee Bridgewater, which joined OJM
with the National Orchestra of Porto
(Orquestra Nacional do Porto), concerts
with Kurt Rosenwinkel, and still concerts
with Joshua Redman and Chris Cheek at
the in inauguration of the Cine-Teatro
Constantino Nery in Matosinhos. OJM has
also crossed borders, performing at
Carnegie Hall in New York, in Brussels,
Milan, and at the JVC Jazz Festival (U.S.A.).

> The Lisbon Underground Music
Ensemble (L.U.M.E.) is a project of
composer Marco Barroso, who has the
objective of creating a space for the
expression of his music and ideas in a
personal orchestral context, without
losing affinities to the classic Big Band
model in the process. Composed by
musicians with diverse experiences in the
fields of jazz, rock, classical, contemporary and experimental music, the group
seeks to align written composition with
elements of improvisation, in an eclectic
and original context. Launched in 2006,
L.U.M.E. released their first album in
2010 with a collection of songs that the
band’s leader composed specifically for
the formation, bringing together the great
talent and collaboration of a very diverse
group of players and improvisers. Be it for
the dramatization (many times ironic) of
the practices and vocabularies that pass
through Jazz, rock and other highly
technical forms of music, or be it through
the incursion in experimentalism that
assaults the fringes of these languages, the
music of Marco Barroso and L.U.M.E.
proclaim and reconstruct, in an original
way, the patrimonial role of “Big Bandism”,
fleeing from more conventional standards
and opening new esthetic perspectives.

band. Compuesto por músicos con
diferentes experiencias en los campos del
jazz, el rock, la música clásica, contemporánea y experimental, el grupo procura
aliar la composición escrita con elementos
de improvisación dentro de un contexto
ecléctico y de autor. El L.U.M.E, que surge
en 2006, publicó su primer disco en 2010
con un repertorio que su líder compuso
para esta formación en concreto, y en el
que se articulan tanto el talento como la
complicidad de un conjunto muy diverso
de intérpretes e improvisadores. Ya sea por
la dramatización (muchas veces irónica) de
las prácticas y vocabularios que pasan por
el jazz, el rock o la música erudita, ya sea
por la incursión en el experimentalismo
que asalta los límites de estos lenguajes, la
música que crean Marco Barroso y el
L.U.M.E. reconstruye de forma original la
carga patrimonial del “big bandismo”
huyendo de los patrones más convencionales y abriendo nuevas perspectivas
estéticas.

> The Big Band from City of Nazaré was
formed in 1999, by means of a proposal to
the Nazaré Council Council by the band’s
director. It’s principal objective was to give
to the young talents in the region the
opportunity to continue their musical
training in the area of jazz music. In their
already long-lived existence, the Big Band
presents itself in diverse festivals, both
nationally and abroad, including some of
the most important Jazz Clubs in the
country. The launching of their first CD
took place at the 2nd International Big
Band Festival, in 2003, in Nazaré. The
second disc, “Filme”, (2006), and the third,
“10 anos”, show the musical evolution of
the formation. On their latest album, the
band interprets themes from Wayne
Shorter and Charles Mingus, aside from
some of the most well known “jazz
standards”. This most recent collection
will surely be a favorite in this concert
from the series “The Art of the Big Band”.

formó en 1999 a propuesta de su director al
Ayuntamiento, y tuvo como principal
objetivo brindar una oportunidad a los
jóvenes talentos de la región para que
continuasen su formación musical en el

internacionales, y en los más importantes
clubes de jazz de nuestro país. El lanzamiento de su primer CD se produjo en el 2º
Festival Internacional de Big Bands que se
celebró en Nazaré en 2003. El segundo CD,
“Filme” (2006), y el tercero, “10 Anos”, son la
muestra de la evolución musical de esta
formación. En su último disco, interpreta
temas de Wayne Shorter y Charles Mingus,
además de algunos de los más conocidos
“standards” del jazz. En su concierto del ciclo
“El Arte de la Big Band” se dará prioridad a
este repertorio más reciente.

> The Hot Club of Portugal Big Band was the
first great formation, with regular activity in
Portugal, to dedicate itself exclusively to jazz
music; they came out in 1990 and their
premiere concert was directed by Zé Eduardo.
Now under the direction of Pedro Moreira,
they inaugurated the Culturgest jazz program
in Lisbon, having as a soloist the trumpeter
Freddie Hubbard. Benny Golson, Curtis
Fuller, Eddie Henderson, Chris Cheek also
played… they recreated the works of Miles
Davis / Gil Evans, Porgy and Bess, and
Sketches of Spain under the direction of
Robert Sadin, with soloists Tim Gagans and
Tom Harrell. Aside from innumerous concerts
throughout all of Portugal, the band carried
out a musical digression produced by
Culturgest and presented themselves in
Madrid at Círculo de Belas Artes. They also
presented themselves at the Republic
Assembly and in 2008—the year in which Hot
Clube de Portugal celebrated 60 years of
existence—they developed a project with
Maria João and Mário Laginha.

Lisbon, familiar and happy. A European
capital that doesn’t need stages nor
theaters to enjoy good music in the late
afternoon. The magic of this event is
recognized and spread along the summer
in various gardens, streets, plazas, and
viewpoints throughout the city of Lisbon.
Fridays and Sundays have must-see
attractions in diverse public spaces that
bring together, in the late afternoon,
thousands of alfacinhas (natives of Lisbon)
that are looking for the unique experience
of listening to vibrant sounds of black
music, in an urban setting, against the
backdrop of the summer sun.

cosmopolita, familiar y feliz. Una capital
europea que no necesita escenario ni salas
para disfrutar de buena música al caer la
tarde. La magia de este evento es
ampliamente reconocida, y se extiende a lo

Los viernes y domingos tienen una parada
obligatoria en diferentes espacios públicos,

> Celebrating ten years of Programa
Escolhas and the International Youth Year,
Programa Escolhas, the EGEAC and the
Instituto Português da Juventude (the
Portuguese Youth Institute), with support
from the Associação Mais Cidadania,
promoted a competition for young talented
musicians. The emergence of new artists
coming from underprivileged background
contexts, particularly in the context of
projects and areas where Programa
Escolhas operates, was the objective that
mobilized these partners. This is the
challenge that is embodied in the the CD
“A Nossa Voz”. All of the production work
lasted 10 months, and what preceded the
final product that can now be heard was
an intense process of empowerment and
negotiation, but mostly of constructing
strong ties of personal, social, and
intercultural relationships amongst all the
participants. Such ties allowed us to arrive
where initially it seemed difficult: to a
place where the voice of youth — critical,
but simultaneously constructive — allows
us to perceive, in first person, the
difficulties, the dreams, and the
expectations of those who seek to make
good decisions. And that will last. May “A
Nossa Voz” (our voice) inspire you to make
a difference in favor of social inclusion!
> En el año en que se conmemoran el 10º
aniversario del Programa Escolhas y el
Año Internacional de la Juventud, el
Programa Escolhas, la EGEAC y el Instituto
Portugués de la Juventud, con el apoyo de
la Asociación Mais Cidadania, promueven
un concurso para jóvenes talentos
musicales. La búsqueda de nuevos artistas
en entornos con menos oportunidades —
verbigracia, en el ámbito de los proyectos y
territorios en que opera el Programa
Escolhas— fue el objetivo que impulsó esta
colaboración. Este desafío se materializa
en el CD “A Nossa Voz”. Todo el trabajo de
producción, que duró diez meses y dio
lugar al producto que ahora se puede
escuchar, fue un proceso de intensa
capacitación, de negociación y, sobre todo,
de construcción de fuertes lazos
interpersonales, sociales e interculturales
entre todos los y las participantes. Estos
lazos nos permitieron llegar hasta donde
creíamos difícil al principio: un lugar
donde la voz de los jóvenes aquí presentes
—crítica, pero a la vez constructiva— nos
permite percibir en primera persona las
dificultades, los sueños y las expectativas
de quienes desean hacer la elección
correcta. Y que perdurarán. Deseamos que
“A Nossa Voz” le ayude a descubrir la
importancia de la inclusión social.

> There was a time when cinema was
shown in major theaters, with huge
screens for full audiences. During that
time, in Portugal, cinema traveled from
town to town. In every context cinema
exhibition was a party, a social event and
a meeting point. Movies in the Street is a
tribute to those times and their heroes: the
filmmakers, actors, projectionists, and
movie theaters… that is, cinema as a
collective act. Movies in the Street is the
result of many collaborations and
partnerships with museums, markets,
and various communities. Many opinions
and suggestions were heard. We are
bringing classics of cinema to the street
from different genres (fiction, silent films,
documentaries, animations, short films)
and various sources: European cinema,
Hollywood, Bollywood, and a great deal
of Portuguese cinema. This summer, in
Lisbon, we recreate the party!

> In the era of ‘Economic Air Lines’, a
group of American tourists carry out a
prearranged vacation. The program
consists of visiting one capital per day.
When they arrive to Paris, they notice the
airport is exactly the same as the one they
departed from in Rome, that the streets
are just like those in Hamburg and that
the street lamps appear strangely similar
to those in New York. Little by little they
meet folks from France and some
friendships are created, which permits
them to spend 24 hours with Parisians—
among them, Mr. Hulot.

un grupo de turistas americanas disfrutan
de un viaje organizado. El programa se
compone de la visita de una capital al día.
Cuando llegan a París, observan que el
aeropuerto es exactamente igual al que
abandonaron al salir de Roma, que las
calles son como las de Hamburgo, y que las
farolas de la calle guardan un extraño
parecido con las de Nueva York. Al cabo de
un rato, encuentran franceses. Se crea un
pequeño calor humano que les permite
estar 24 horas con parisinos, entre los
cuales se encuentra el Sr. Hulot.

> Starting with a celebrated painting by
Millet, this film is a perspective on the
persistence, in contemporary society, of
scavengers—those who live off the
recuperation of things (detriment,
leftovers) that others don’t want or leave
behind. The scavenger is Agnès Varda,
who experiments for her first time with a
small digital camera, if you want to
consider her as a ‘scavenger’ of images that
others don’t want to see or do, and
therefore leave behind.

> A visit to the Italian capital. An
impressionist portrayal with autobiographical elements from the film’s creator,
who is also a character in the film. A
journey in 3 distinct time periods:
childhood in the country, the beginning
of the Second World War and in the year
1972. A passage through the day-to-day of
Romans, their lives, monuments, habits,
majestic architecture and chaotic streets.

> In 2007, six musicians that shared a
common link with Metropolitana
(professors, members of OML and former
students) formed Almost 6, a trumpet
quintet with percussion—an uncommon
formation in Portugal. Their mission:
explore the potentialities of the trumpet,
referring to the entire family of the
instrument, from the flugelhorn to the
piccolo trumpet, and utilizing a variety of
mutes. Their form of expression has been
very successful, containing a well-diversified musical repertoire, from baroque to
pop, from jazz to Portuguese contemporary
music.

retrato impresionista con mezclas
autobiográficas del propio director, que es
también un personaje de la película. Un
viaje a tres épocas diferentes: una
infancia en el campo, el inicio de la II
Guerra Mundial y el año 1972. Un paseo
por la vida cotidiana de los romanos, sus
vidas, los monumentos, las costumbres, la
majestuosa arquitectura y sus carreteras
más caóticas. Ciudad eterna, ciudad de
ilusiones.
> En 2007, seis músicos que comparten un
vínculo común con la Metropolitana
(profesores, miembros de la OML y
exalumnos) formaron Almost6, un quinteto
de trompetas con percusión, una formación
poco habitual en Portugal. Misión: explorar
las potencialidades de la trompeta
recurriendo a toda la familia de este
instrumento —desde el fliscorno a la
trompeta piccolo— y utilizando las más
variadas sordinas. Una empresa con mucho
éxito y un repertorio que se extiende desde
el Barroco al pop, desde el jazz a la música
portuguesa contemporánea.

> Inspirada en un famoso cuadro de
Millet, esta película es una mirada sobre la
persistencia de los rebuscadores en la
sociedad contemporánea: gente que vive
de recuperar cosas (basura, sobras) que los
demás no quieren o dejan tras de sí. La
rebuscadora es Agnès Varda, que prueba
por primera vez una pequeña cámara
digital y se mete en el papel de “recuperadora” de las imágenes que los demás no
quieren ver ni hacer y, por lo tanto, van
dejando atrás.

> The Metropolitana Brass Quintet brings
together musicians from the Orquestra
Metropolitana de Lisboa (Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra), professors from the
institution and a former student from the
same Academy—a result of the crisscrossing
of their experiences in the institution that
reveals, on stage, that music is the point of
union within the group. This singular
formation explores a musical repertoire
marked by its versatility of rhythms and by
the heat of their melodies, always leaving the
audience mesmerized by the dynamics of
their sound.

songs for late summer afternoons in
Lisbon mark the new edition of Classics
on the Street, taking place from August to
September. The city boasts hot sounds
and diverse rhythms in a variety of its

the EGEAC, with musical scheduling by
Metropolitana. Series integrated into the
program Com’Out Lisbon.

> In the current Portuguese panorama,
there are various chamber groups formed
by former students of the Superior
Academy of the Metropolitan Orchestra
– a reflection of the developed curriculum
in which the practice of music in small
formations plays a fundamental role. This
is the case of this brass quintet, which just
recently assumed its name. Onlybrass
brings a strong repertoire of music for
brass, explored by different composers
with amazing results every time.

varios los grupos de cámara formados por
exalumnos de la Academia Superior de la
Orquesta Metropolitana, reflejo de un plan
El Proyecto Vicente propone tres líneas
de trabajo fundamentales, siempre en
torno a la relación entre el cuervo, la
ciudad de Lisboa y la zona ribereña y
Belém: el arte como ancla para el
desarrollo de proyectos extraartísticos, el
arte como pretexto para el desarrollo de
la cultura visual contemporánea, el arte
como contexto para la producción de
ambientes y escenografías en el espacio
público.
La programación se prolonga hasta el 25 de octubre.

> On the shrine of Hermitage, towards
the Marta Pinto Alley, in Belém, the
British artist Simeon Nelson dedicates a
contemporary relic to Saint Vincent. In
this sculpted evocation, the goal is a
modular system that synthesizes
ornamental geometry, Christian
spirituality and industrial design,
bringing body, paradoxically, to the
immateriality of religious myth.
On the surface, Vicentes multiply
obsessively in black and white, mute, with
only the sound of drawing on paper. The
drawings, which will be spread
throughout the city, are the work of João
Ribeiro, in a project that will disseminate
images made in partnership with Nuno
Maya and Carole Purnelle.
Along the Marta Pinto Alley, the Czech
artist Jana Matejkova proposes to decorate
the street as if the spirit of Prague had
taken control of the decorative traditions in
popular neighborhoods — as if the
Metamorphosis of Kafka had been called to
inspire Fado (traditional Portuguese folk
music), in a mutual encounter with magic.
The intervention invades the light of day
with shadows and transforms the night
into a flutter of mysteries hinting at light.
Memory, myth, creativity, future.
Vicent is the bit to the unrest.

Los cuervos —conocidos tradicionalmente como “vicentes”— son un
importante símbolo de la ciudad de
Lisboa. Nos observan discretamente
desde los blasones suspendidos de las
farolas de la calle y desde las banderas
oficiales, pero han estado ausentes de la
memoria colectiva. Ahora, el Proyecto
Travessa da Ermida decide “dar alas” al
cuervo de Lisboa desde la cultura
urbana, el arte público y la edición, con
la participación de creadores internacionales y la colaboración de diferentes
entidades, instituciones y empresas.
Vicente es el desasosiego cosmopolita de
la imaginación.

> El Quinteto de metales de la Metropolitana reúne a músicos de la Orquesta

En la fachada se multiplicarán los
vicentes. Obsesivamente, en blanco y
negro, mudos, sólo al sonido del papel.
Los dibujos, que se distribuirán por otros
lugares de la ciudad, son de João Ribeiro:
un proyecto de diseminación de la imagen
llevado a cabo en colaboración con Nuno
Maya y Carole Purnelle.
A lo largo de Travessa do Marta Pinto, la
artista checa Jana Matejkova se propone
decorar la calle como si el espíritu de
Praga se ocupase de las tradiciones
decorativas de los barrios populares,
como si la Metamorfosis de Kafka fuese
llamada a inspirar el fado en un
encuentro mutuo con la magia. La
intervención invade de sombras el sol del
día y transforma la noche en un aletear de
misteriosos vestigios de luz.
Memoria, mito, creatividad, futuro.
Vicente es el latido del desasosiego.

Ravens (pt. ‘corvos’) – traditionally
called ‘Vicentes’ in Portuguese – are an
important symbol of the city of Lisbon.
Discretely, they stare at us from
suspended coats-of-arms in street lamps
and gaze at us in official flags, but they’ve
been largely absent in our collective
memory. Now, the project Travessa da
Ermida has decided to ‘give wings’ to the
Ravens of Lisbon in a project of urban
culture, public art, and publication with
the participation of international
creators, developed in partnership with
various entities, institutions, and companies. ‘Vicente’ is the disquieting
cosmopolite of the imagination.

Project Vicente proposes three
fundamental lines of work, always
revolving around the relation between
the raven, the city of Lisbon and the
riverside zone, and Belém: art as anchor
of extra-artistic project developments;
art as a pretext for the development of
contemporary visual culture; art as the
context for the production of ambiance
and set designs in public space.
