While at the meeting, I and the other steering committee members will be glad to discuss any questions or suggestions you have for our section! Presently, please read this Newsletter for updates on the EB 2013 program, the NCAR Reception/Awards Presentation Mixer, upcoming deadlines and events, the NCAR Trainee Page, and a list of new NCAR members. You may have heard that NCAR has been awarded an additional program slot for EB2014! Please send us your suggestions for symposia and FT for this event. The chances are now even better for having your favorite topic highlighted. I want to thank our Trainee Representative Amy Arnold for her outstanding service to the section. She rotated off the NCAR steering committee at the end of 2012. The new trainee representative is Karla K.V. Haack, PhD. MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR Good day to all. I am Julian Stewart and it is my privilege to serve within the NCAR steering committee as Secretary-Treasurer. Among my secretarial duties is the preparation of this Newsletter. In this endeavor I have been ably assisted by Christopher Schwartz PhD, currently doing post-doctorate work in my laboratory. Chris actually craved this opportunity and will receive many brownie points as well as good wishes. CARL LUDWIG DISTINGUISHED LECTURESHIP FOR 2013 Roger A. L. Paton of the Bristol Heart Institute UK will be rotating off the NCAR steering committee after three years of indefatigable service. We have all derived benefit from his splendid leadership and sage counsel. International members who hold primary membership in the NCAR section are eligible to apply for this position. Eligible candidates cannot hold another position on other APS committees during 2014-2016. Those interested in being considered for the position are invited to submit a letter describing one’s qualifications/relevant experience and Curriculum Vitae (CV) to Harold Schultz [email protected]. Information about the International member can be found on the APS website (http://www.theaps.org/mm/hp/Audiences/APS-Committees/tac) or by contacting Professor Julian F. R. Paton [email protected]. The terms of service will be January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2016. If interested, please submit your application letter and CV by April 10, 2013. Page 4 SUBMIT PROPOSALS for NCAR FEATURED TOPICS AND SYMPOSIA FOR EB 2014 Remember! The deadline for submitting NCAR Featured Topic and Symposium proposals for EB 2014 is April 5, 2013. We highly encourage our members to submit proposals. Two symposia and Three featured topics are sponsored by NCAR every year. A brief description of each follows: Symposia: Typically include 4-5 speakers; 20-30 min presentations with a 2 hr maximum time allotment. Organizers should consider multidisciplinary approaches (including participation of other APS sections) and the contribution by experimentation at multiple levels of investigation. Featured Topics: Typically include 1-2 invited speakers (20-30 min presentations), followed by 4 selected abstracts submitted to EB (10-15 min presentations); 2 hr. maximum time allotment. A special call for abstracts will occur in November 2013 to encourage abstract submissions to the selected featured topic categories. To ensure NCAR provides you with excellent programming, we need your input. Please consider submitting a proposal, or contact our NCAR program representative (Eric Lazartigues; [email protected]) with ideas and/or suggestions for individuals we can contact to solicit a proposal. Email Dr. Lazartigues to obtain the application forms. Further information on how to propose a featured topic or symposium can be found at http://www.the-aps.org/mm/hp/Audiences/Sections/neural-controlauto-reg/proposeftandsymposia_1.html NOMINATIONS FOR CARL LUDWIG AWARD 2014 The qualifications for the Ludwig Lectureship Award are described and past winners are listed on the APS website (http://www.the-aps.org/mm/awards/sections/ncar). Please submit a brief letter of nomination and the Curriculum Vitae of the nominee to Harold Schultz ([email protected]) by Sunday, March 31, 2013. Two letters of nomination are required for each nominee. !!SCIENCE POLICY ALERT!! SEQUESTRATION Funding for the federal science agencies such as NIH and NSF could face immediate budget cuts if budget sequestration goes into effect on March 1st. Since we are already in the middle of the fiscal year, those cuts would amount to about 9% of science agency budgets through the end of FY 2013. In an article in Politico, NIH Director Francis Collins described the devastating effects these across the board budget cuts would have on NIH research. Only Congress can stop sequestration. FASEB has posted an alert at http://capwiz.com/faseb/issues/alert/?alertid=62385281 with a model letter you can email to your Senators and Representative. The model message urges them to continue rather than to cut essential research funding. Sending this message to your elected officials is easy, but your message can have even more impact if you take a few minutes to personalize it. To help you do so, FASEB has posted new NIH congressional district and state factsheets. This is a convenient source for data on local NIH investment. FASEB also has some factsheets on NSF investment in about a dozen states. Catharine G. Clark, PhD.
