TROMBINI TRIUMPHS WITH KIWIPLAN
Facing today's global challenges in manufacturing
head on, Trombini Embalagens' corrugating plant in
Farroupilha, Brazil recently completed installation of
Kiwiplan's complete suite of fully automated software
systems including corrugator scheduling, plant floor
scheduling and data collection as well as paper and
finished goods inventory systems.
“When we were shopping for a software vendor,
Kiwiplan consistently came to the top of our list. Their
sophisticated knowledge of the industry and their
ability and expertise in providing and implementing leadingedge technology solutions are
key reasons they were our
number one choice,” comments Edesel Schulz, industrial
manager.
Trombini is the largest
manufacturer of corrugated
boxes in southern Brazil,
through its industrial units
located in Curitiba and
Farroupilha. These plants are
equipped with state-of-the-art
equipment and the highest
levels of technical qualification. The company aims to
deliver rapid, high-quality services to the market
throughout Brazil.
Business and Customer Benefits
Edesel remarks, “Since implementing Kiwiplan’s
Total Solution at Farroupilha, we have achieved major
improvements. Specifically, the plant has become
highly organized and our procedures are clear. Most
importantly, by leveraging the technology, we’ve
integrated and aligned production, shipping, customer
service/sales, and the other critical areas. We’ve been
able to restructure our organization and manufacturing
tasks to improve on our already excellent on-time
delivery record—this is critical to our customers.”

Roberto Teixeira, Sales Manager for Goettsch Brasil
Ltda (Kiwiplan marketing representatives in Brazil),
remarks, “These improvements are exciting news for
Trombini. I’ve truly enjoyed watching them advance so
significantly. Their improvements coincide with those
achieved by plants throughout the world that are using
Kiwiplan’s products and, as a result, are achieving
significantly improved productivity through planning
and scheduling, improved uptime, reduced waste, and
increased throughput, among others.”
“The quality, depth, detail,
and accuracy of information the
system provides is excellent,”
continues Edesel. “Without a
doubt, Kiwiplan is allowing us to
respond more quickly to order
and production changes throughout the plant. Although we
aren’t yet tapping the full
potential of the information
provided, through Kiwiplan’s
ongoing support, training, and
consulting services, we’re
continuing to improve the
procedures to do so.”
Stronger Customer Relationships
Edesel says, “Today’s global trend is for companies
not to use warehouses and storage areas. Therefore,
every order becomes an emergency order. The customer needs it right away. The Kiwiplan system is
helping us meet our target to supply products when
customers request them; these orders no longer are an
‘emergency’ but are orders that are managed with ease
and consistency. Having the right information in the
right place at the right time enables us to deliver
products to our customers when they need it. Customers trust us because we can deliver what we promise.
Additionally, we save on the costs associated with not
carrying unnecessary inventory.”

Great Northern Corporation, one of
Kiwiplan’s sheet plant customers, orders
board from three main suppliers—their sister
plant and two external suppliers. When they
needed a program that would enable them to
order board automatically and easily, keep
track of what needs to be ordered, and
indicate where it has been ordered from,
they turned to Kiwiplan for a solution, thus
the launch of Kiwiplan’s Sheet Maintenance
System, SMS, in the U.S. market.
Automatic, electronic order placement
from sheet plant to supplier
SMS automatically displays all of the
orders for which board has not yet been
ordered. When users click on the order,
they can select the company from which
they want to order the board. The system
then automatically creates a file and sends
the order electronically to the chosen
supplier.
Real-time communication with plant
scheduling system
SMS also communicates to Kiwiplan’s full
plant scheduling system (PCS) that the board
has been ordered and from where the board
will be coming. If the plant decides to use
existing stock instead of ordering new board,
SMS automatically tells PCS to determine the
slitter/scorer routes for this existing stock
rather than ordering new board. This
interface works with corrugator scheduling
systems other than Kiwiplan’s, such as the
company’s own host system or other
scheduling software.
Benefits corrugating and folding
carton plants as well
providers, the better equipped they will
be to meet these demands. Transmitting an order electronically means one
less phone call, higher accuracy of
order details, and fewer returned goods.
SMS can also mean more business for
sheet-feeder plants, since sheet plants
and folding carton plants using this
system are more likely to place orders
with plants that will allow for this direct
integration and electronic transmission
of orders.

SMS can bring to your US-based plant,

The Triple Play
“Through the collaborative efforts of
Trombini, Kiwiplan and their Brazilian
office in Jundiaí headed by Luis Pedroso,
and Goettsch Brasil, all requirements in
terms of the project timing, installation,
and implementation have been met in less
than a year without breaking the budget,”
notes Roberto.
“Kiwiplan and Goettsch were fortunate

TROMBINI TRIUNFA COM KIWIPLAN
Encarando os desafios globais da
atualidade das lideranças de fabricação, a
unidade de chapas e ondulados da Trombini
Embalagens em Farroupilha, RS, Brasil,
recentemente completou a instalação do
conjunto completo de sistemas para
completa automatização, incluindo
programação de onduladeira, programação
de piso de fábrica e coleta de dados bem
como dos sistemas de estoque de papel e
produtos finalizados.
“Quando estávamos procurando um
fabricante de software, Kiwiplan vinha
insistentemente em primeiro lugar de nossa
lista. Seu conhecimento sofisticado da
indústria e sua capacidade e perícia em
fornecer e implementar soluções com
tecnologia de ponta são as razões-chave pelas
quais foi nossa escolha prioritária”, comenta
Edesel, Schulz, gerente industrial.
Trombini é o maior fabricante de caixas
de papelão ondulado no sul do Brasil, com
suas unidades industriais localizadas em
Curitiba, PR e Farroupilha, RS. Estas fábricas
estão equipadas com equipamento de nível
de “estado-de-arte” e os mais altos níveis de
qualificação técnica. Seu objetivo: a entrega
rápida de produtos de alta qualidade através
do mercado brasileiro.
Benefícios ao Cliente e Benefícios
Empresariais
Edesel destaca: “Desde que
implementamos o sistema de Solução Total,
da Kiwiplan, em Farroupilha, temos atingido
aprimoramentos de grande importância”.
Especificamente a fábrica se tornou
committed to learning and using the
software to the maximum advantage,”
comments Roberto. “Powerful software
such as Kiwiplan’s that offers full automation and an ability to gain in production
throughput requires a major cultural shift
beyond the old ‘business as usual.’
Trombini not only accepted change but
embraced it. The combination has been
spectacular, as I have watched the plant
perform better and better. With the
sophisticated, multi-module software and
everything fully operational in Brazilian
Portuguese, what we did together was
quite an achievement.”
Edesel concurs, “Everyone involved in
the project was really committed. We
understood and respected the contribution
each party brought to the table. None of us
allowed distance, language, or cultural
differences to get in the way—we all had
the same vision and set the same goals. We
are proof positive of a true partnership.
Trombini is definitely a different, more
competitive company now that we have
Kiwiplan.”
altamente organizada e nossos procedimentos
são nítidos. De maior importância ainda, ao
nivelarmos a tecnologia conseguimos integrar
e alinhar a produção, expedição, vendas e
serviços ao cliente, bem como outras áreas
críticas.
Temos sido capazes de reestruturar nossas
tarefas de organização e fabricação para
incrementar nosso já excelente registro em
entrega on-line – isto é algo crítico para nossos
clientes.
Roberto Teixeira, Gerente de Vendas da
Goettsch Brasil Ltda (representação de
marketing da Kiwiplan no Brasil), destaca:
“Estas melhorias são informações animadoras
para Trombini. Foi um grande prazer
observá-los avançar tão significativamente.
Seus aprimoramentos são os mesmos
alcançados por outras empresas através do
mundo que estão usando os produtos da
Kiwiplan, e que como resultado têm atingido
significativa melhora de produtividade
mediante planejamento e programação,
tempo útil incrementado, redução de refugo e
aumento de velocidade de produção das
máquinas, entre outros”.
“A qualidade, profundidade, detalhamento
deles. Os clientes confiam em nós uma vez
que podemos entregar o que prometemos.
Adicionalmente, economizamos nos custos
associados com manutenção de estoque

melhoria dos procedimentos neste sentido,
através do suporte contínuo, treinamento e
serviços consultoriais da Kiwiplan.”
Relacionamento mais sólido com o Cliente
Edesel diz “A tendência do momento é que
as empresas não estejam utilizando depósitos
e áreas de armazenagem. Portanto, cada
pedido se torna um pedido urgente. O cliente
precisa dele de imediato. O sistema Kiwiplan
está nos ajudando a cumprir nossa meta de
fornecer produtos quando os clientes os
requisitam; estes pedidos não são mais
processados em um “clima de emergência”,
mas sim gerenciados com naturalidade e
A tripla jogada
comenta Roberto. “Um software poderoso tal
como o da Kiwiplan que propicia completa
automação e uma capacidade de ganho na
velocidade e forma de produção exige uma
mudança de cultura em nível primordial que
vai além do costumeiro ‘negociar como
sempre se negocia’. A Trombini não só
aceitou as mudanças como também as
adotou. A combinação tem sido espetacular,
à medida que tenho observado a fábrica num
desempenho cada vez melhor. Com este
software multimodular e sofisticado,
totalmente operacional no idioma português
do Brazil, é evidente que o que fizemos
juntos é uma grande realização.”
Edesel concorda: “ Todos os envolvidos
no projeto estavam realmente
comprometidos. Viemos a entender e
respeitar a contribuição que cada parte trouxe
ao projeto. Nenhum de nós permitiu que a
distância, idioma, ou diferenças culturais
interferissem no curso do projeto – tivemos
todos a mesma visão e fixamos os mesmos
alvos. Somos prova positiva de uma
verdadeira parceria. A Trombini é agora uma
empresa definitivamente diferente e mais
competitiva, agora que temos conosco
Kiwiplan.”

at Corrugated 2002 in Paris celebrated Kiwiplan’s 25 years
of continued growth and innovative development in the
corrugated box industry.
KIWIPLAN EUROPE’S 2003 USER’S GROUP SETS THE SCENE FOR CONTINUED INTERNATIONAL GROWTH
Growth, growth and more growth was the message given loud and clear by Bruce Howe, Managing Director Global Markets, at
Kiwiplan Europe’s seventeenth annual User’s Group meeting.
Staged in Amsterdam, the two-day event offered users of our high performance software solutions an opportunity to hear about
our ongoing international success, discuss our product developments and review
global issues relating to the corrugated industry.
Bruce reported: “In the face of a world-wide economic downturn, we have
bucked the trend with increased sales and, to back this growth, we are continuing
to expand our workforce. Our new German office has generated significant
business, and plans are now moving ahead to further expand the network of local
Kiwiplan offices across Europe.
“There has been a rapid adoption of the newly introduced Kiwiplan products
such as the company’s unique Continuous Automatic Scheduling Environment
(CASE) that provides huge benefits by fully automating scheduling in corrugator
plants. Also, new global standards in sales order processing are being achieved by
customers investing in Kiwiplan’s Enterprise Sales Processing (ESP) with 42 orders
Bruce Howe, Managing Director Global Markets
for this module so far.”
With 32 delegates from 13 countries participating, including key customers from the United States, the event was considered
one of the most successful. Marie Raine of Smurfit UK reported, “This was my first time at a Kiwiplan User’s Group. Being able to
interact and learn from other users was a major bonus, but seeing presentations from users on characteristics of the software,
benefits and innovative uses as well as some very exciting new developments was especially interesting.”
Bruce concluded: “We have been at the forefront in setting new standards in the corrugated box industry for the past 26 years
and we are ready to continue doing the same on an expanding global basis for the next 26.”

• The Arabian Packaging Company, one of the largest packaging manufacturers in
the United Arab Emirates, chose Kiwiplan manufacturing software solutions for
its fibreboard corrugated case plant in Dubai to help boost throughput and
improve operating efficiencies. Part of the Al Ghurair Group, Arabian
Packaging has also asked Kiwiplan to implement its complete software suite of
fully integrated products.
The Dubai installation includes Kiwiplan’s new Windows-based order entry
module Enterprise Sales Processing (ESP). Customized to meet the
requirements of the Arabian Packaging plant, ESP sets exciting new global
standards in sales order processing. Benefits include integrated e-business
functions, automatic costing and pricing, automatic document generation,
customized reports, and complete integration with factory floor and inventory.
• Impressed with Kiwiplan’s robust software systems it has already implemented,
La Veggia Group has selected the Kiwiplan’s manufacturing application
package for its sheet feeder plant in Parma, Italy. The well-proven Kiwiplan
solution has also been installed in this key customer’s corrugated box plant in
Roteglia since 1998 where it has played a major part in helping to further
strengthen operating efficiencies and, as a result, increase output.
The complete software solution will include an interface to La Veggia’s new
Mitsubishi single facer and dry end. It was Kiwiplan’s reputation as a leading
software supplier for the world-wide corrugated industry as well as an
organization which offers a ‘total solutions’ approach, including comprehensive
business consultancy, which prompted John Shortt, Technical Director at La
Veggia Group to invest in its products.
• Fast return on investment and significantly improved operating efficiencies are
two key reasons why Kiwiplan has won a major software contract from Smurfit
UK’s Norwich Corrugated Board. Used world-wide in some 500 corrugated
plants, the robust Kiwiplan software is being installed in both Norwich
manufacturing sites. Installation of the software will strengthen further
Smurfit’s focus on improving customer service. The company’s Windrush
operation already successfully utilizes the flexibility offered by the Kiwiplan
system.

• In a move to further strengthen customer focus, maximize on-time deliveries,
and control production costs, Mondi has extended the use of Kiwiplan
software into another of its corrugated plants in South Africa. This versatile
software is now providing real-time production management control in ten
Mondi plants. Five Kiwiplan sites are operated by Mondi Packaging Europe
with Kuils River becoming the fifth Mondipak manufacturing plant in South
Africa to adopt Kiwiplan. Mondi’s decision reflects how today’s successful
corrugated manufacturing and converting plants are those able to focus on
streamlining the supply chain by
maximizing operating efficiencies.

ACCCSA COSTA RICA 2003—A SUCCESS!
In support of the packaging industry in Latin
America, Kiwiplan was pleased to participate in
the 23rd Convention and Expo ACCCSA Costa Rica
2003.
Rapid growth in the German market triggered the opening of the Kiwiplan office in Walldorf Germany.
Kiwiplan Europe Continues to Expand Customer Base
Since the early 1980’s Kiwiplan has serviced its European customers from an office in the United Kingdom. However, although the
European Community exists on paper, individual countries still have
their own language and culture. A recent review of the European
market showed that most of our users would like an even closer
relationship with Kiwiplan. For this reason Kiwiplan decided to
establish a regional office in Walldorf Germany. Close to the historic
and picturesque city of Heidelberg, Kiwiplan GmbH provides sales and
support services to the German speaking area of Europe and parts of
central Europe.
This new facility incorporates a call center linked to our worldwide
network of offices and thus provides corrugated packaging and folding
carton operations with immediate access to technical support 24 hours
a day, seven days a week.
In its first year, Kiwiplan GmbH has achieved some significant and
important sales. The first order was awarded by Rondo Ganahl of
Austria for implementation of software in four corrugated board plants
in Austria, Hungary, and Romania.
Closely following was an order from Bourquin SA located in
Switzerland. This project requires Kiwiplan to install systems in
Bourquin’s German speaking integrated box plant and its French
speaking sheet conversion plant located just a few kilometres away. For
the first time, Kiwiplan will enable both plants to share production data
in real time—and in the chosen language of the user.
The most recent project won was from Model, also in Switzerland.
Although its plant in Moudon has been a user of Kiwiplan products for
many years, its plant in Weinfelden will install Kiwiplan scheduling
software later this year. The driving force for choosing Kiwiplan was
based on trials that demonstrated the superior scheduling solutions
obtained for Model’s high-speed triple knife corrugator.
Along with the growth and new business generated by Kiwiplan
GmbH, Kiwiplan’s well-established office in Lichfield UK has achieved
remarkable successes as well with several new installations won from
both existing and new customers. The new sites are spread across
Europe and the Middle East with installations in the UK, Italy, and
Dubai (see article on page 5).
The success of Kiwiplan GmbH has reinforced Kiwiplan’s belief
that a close relationship with users benefits both parties. As a result,
plans are well underway to open further local offices in the main
markets of Europe in the next few years.
Dirk Pastoor, Sales Manager, who presented a paper on “The ‘Other Waste,’ or
How to Survive and Thrive Doing Business in 2003,” receives thanks for being a
sponsor of the closing gala dinner from ACCCSA Presidente: Ing.Jaime
Peñaredonda Manotas. Ocupa el cargo de Gerente General de Cartorama S.A.,
