a green hotel. Leave your bags, catch an
electrical trolley car to eat at a restaurant
where the food contains no pesticides and
from there pedal your way on a bike path
to an urban farm. Your afternoon snack
could be an organic hot dog, followed by
shopping for clothes made out of recycled
PET bottles. Even your happy hour can take
place at a bar that serves vegetables grown
on the roof of a neighboring building, and
there’s the possibility of wrapping up the
evening with a fine vegetarian dinner. Any
food left on your plate will be transformed
into compost by the city – don’t worry. Your
only chore back at the hotel is plugging
a wire from under the hood of a car in to
any electrical outlet, just like charging a
cell phone, in order to have enough battery
power to drive to a vineyard on the city’s
outskirts – one with an ecological production process, naturally. Welcome to the
greenest city in North America.

resumo de cinco dias vividos em San Francisco, em setembro.
Fomos conferir por que ela acaba de ser reconhecida como a metrópole mais verde da América do Norte pelo Green Index, estudo
desenvolvido por especialistas da Economist Intelligence Unit e
patrocinado pela Siemens. Sua liderança ambiental vem de longa
data: em 1892, um sujeito chamado John Muir fundou ali o Sierra
Club, que viria a se tornar a mais longeva organização conservacionista dos Estados Unidos, hoje com 1,4 milhão de associados.
E John, um dos pais do movimento verde, virou o nome da Muir
Woods, uma floresta com sequoias-gigantes nas redondezas. San
Francisco sempre esteve na vanguarda. Na região nasceram a
Organização das Nações Unidas (em 1945) e os movimentos beat
(nos anos 50), hippie (na década seguinte) e gay (nos 70), entre
outras iniciativas que mudaram o mundo, como a produção daqueles computadores com logotipo em forma de maçã, conhece?
Believe it. This is not some futuristic eco-freako projection, but
rather the summary of five days spent in San Francisco, this September. We went to see why it was just recognized as the greenest city in
North America by the Green Index, a study developed by specialists
from the Economist Intelligence Unit and sponsored by Siemens. Its
environmental leadership has a long history: there, in 1892, a man
named John Muir founded the Sierra Club, which would become the
longest-running conservationist organization in the United States,
with 1.4 million current members. And John, one of the fathers of the
green govement, gave his name to the Muir Woods, a forest of giant
sequoias outside the city. San Francisco has always been on the cutting edge. This region was the birthplace of the Organization of the
United Nation (in 1945), the beat (in the ‘50s), hippie (in the following
decade) and gay (in the ‘70s) movements, among other initiatives
that have changed the world, like the production of those computers
whose logos are shaped like apples ­– ever heard of them?

mítico Woodstock. Quase 45 anos depois, bastou darmos aquela
voltinha de reconhecimento pelas ruas para perceber as pessoas
se reunindo no parque que leva o nome da ponte mais famosa da
cidade, assim como nas outras áreas verdes que cobrem 17% do
seu território. Em uma das praças mais cênicas, a Alamo Square,
encontramos amigas com crianças e cachorros, casais de namorados e até os integrantes de uma banda, a Chamberlin, gravando seu

On the road after the airport, the radio set the mood right away.
“If you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers
in your hair,” Scott McKenzie sang the lyrics by John Phillips, of
The Mamas & The Papas. Search for it on YouTube to jog your
memory: this is the famous invitation to travelers on their way
to the city to display flowers in their hair, and which became an
anthem for peace and love that excited 25,000 hippies on the
lawn of Golden Gate Park during the Monterey Pop Festival in
1967 – two years before the mythic Woodstock. Nearly 45 years
later, all it took was a quick walk around getting familiar with
the streets to notice people gathering in the park named after
the city’s most famous bridge, as well as the other green areas
that cover 17% of its area. At one of the most scenic squares,
Alamo, we met friends with children and dogs, couples and even
the members of a band, Chamberlin, shooting a video. “We love

Com uma geografia privilegiada por beirar o Oceano Pacífico
de um lado e a baía de outro, San Francisco convida a explorações
a pé ou de bike. Deixamos o Nissan Leaf recarregando na garagem
do nosso green hotel, o W, e aproveitamos a oferta gratuita de bicicletas. Carlton, Intercontinental e Hilton, além do Orchard Garden
e do próprio W, integram um seleto grupo de hotéis verdes da
cidade. As placas de green business que ostentam na fachada indicam que suas práticas vão além de quartos cujas luzes se apagam
na ausência dos hóspedes: as soluções se estendem até o uso de tecidos reciclados nas roupas de cama e de produtos biodegradáveis
na faxina. Os disputados certificados Leed (Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design), dados aos prédios mais sustentáveis
do planeta, estão em mais de 130 edificações do skyline da metrópole, como no AT&T Park – o estádio do time de beisebol Giants,
iluminado por mais de 500 painéis solares.
Escolhemos as ciclovias mais planas, que beiram a baía entre
as duas grandes pontes, partindo da Bay Bridge, passando diante
do píer turístico Fisherman’s Wharf e seguindo até a Golden Gate
Bridge. Cruzar os 2.700 metros da gigante vermelha que se tornou
o maior cartão-postal da cidade não é exatamente o passeio mais
gostoso durante o verão, tamanha a quantidade de pedestres, mas o
downhill que espera os bikers do lado de lá, a caminho de Sausalito,
no condado de Marin, encerra o trajeto com adrenalina. Antes de

this city, its atmosphere, its landscape,” said Eric Maier, one of
the members of the group from Vermont.
With a privileged setting on the edge of the Pacific Ocean on one
side and a bay on the other, San Francisco welcomes exploration
on foot or bike. We left the Nissan Leaf charging in the garage of
our green hotel, the W, and took advantage of the offer for free bike
rentals. Carlton, Intercontinental and Hilton, as well as Orchard
Garden and W itself, make up a select group of green hotels in
the city. The green business signs displayed on the facades indicate that their practices go way beyond rooms whose lights shut off
when guests are away: the solutions extend to the use of recycled
fabrics in the bedsheets and biodegradable cleaning products. The
much-coveted Leed certificates (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), conferred upon the most sustainable buildings on
earth, have been given to over 130 buildings in the city’s skyline,
including AT&T Park – the stadium of the Giants baseball team, lit
by more than 500 solar panels.
We chose the flattest bike paths, which border the bay between
the two big bridges, leaving from Bay Bridge, passing in front of
the touristy Fisherman’s Wharf and continuing to the Golden Gate.
Crossing the 8,900-foot length of the red behemoth that’s become the
city’s main landmark isn’t exactly the most pleasant activity during
the summer, as shown by the quantity of pedestrians, but the downhill run that awaits bikers on the other side, on the way to Sausalito,
in Marin county, ends the ride with a rush of adrenaline. Before

Horizons encanta por oferecer terraço com vista para a metrópole,

Se o plano para o dia seguinte for conhecer o zigue-zague da
Lombard Street, o antigo reduto hippie no cruzamento das ruas
Haight e Ashbury, as ladeiras de Chinatown ou a ilha de Alcatraz,
é melhor encostar a bike. Espalhada em um sobe-e-desce de 50 colinas, San Francisco usa desde 1873 os chamados cable cars, que
hoje somam 40 carros puxados por cabos de aço subterrâneos.
Os bondinhos amados pelos turistas são as vedetes do mais vasto
sistema de transporte público dos Estados Unidos – maior até que
o de Nova York. Somam-se a eles o metrô, 26 trólebus históricos
chamados de street cars e outros 333 ônibus elétricos, todos impulsionados por cabos suspensos, além de ônibus e táxis híbridos,
que utilizam tanto diesel quanto eletricidade. Assim, metade dos
coletivos locais não emite carbono algum no ar, algo fundamental
no trânsito de uma cidade de 800.000 habitantes. O número é mil
vezes maior que o da vila de Yerba Buena quando ela deixou de
pertencer ao México e foi incorporada pelos EUA com o nome do
santo italiano São Francisco de Assis, em 1847. Se considerada
toda a área metropolitana, porém, a San Francisco contemporânea já acumula 4,3 milhões de habitantes.
A miscigenação de americanos, latinos – mexicanos, na maioria
– e chineses está tão incorporada à rotina que muitas placas incluem as três línguas: inglês, espanhol e mandarim. É o caso dos
informativos sobre como separar o lixo, visto que a bem-sucedida
coleta seletiva da cidade, implementada nos anos 70, obriga os moradores – sob pena de multa – a colocar todos os recicláveis juntos
no cesto azul, lixo imprestável no preto e, na lata verde, orgânicos.
boarding the ferry back to San Francisco, take some time to enjoy
the view and pound the pavement between the shops and bars in
the little city. There, restaurant Horizons is attractive for its terrace
with a view of the metropolis, live jazz and the energetic food of chef
David Malenowsky, who uses ingredients from farms in the region.
If your plan for the next day is to see the zig-zag of Lombard
Street, the old hippie haven at the intersection of Haight and
Ashbury Streets, the hills of Chinatown or the island of Alcatraz,
you’d better leave your bike at home. Spread across the rise and
fall of some 50 hills, San Francisco has been using its so-called
cable cars since 1873; today, there’s a total of 40, pulled by underground steel cables. These trolleys so beloved by tourists are the
darlings of the vastest public transportation system in the United
States – even bigger than New York’s. Add to it the subway, 26
historic trolleys called street cars and another 333 electric buses,
all propelled by suspended cables, as well as the buses and hybrid
taxis, which run on diesel as well as electricity. As such, half of
the local fleet does not emit any carbon into the air, something
fundamental with the traffic of a city of 800,000 people. This
number is a thousand times greater than that of the village of Yerba Buena when it ceased to be a part of Mexico and was incorporated into the U.S., named after the Italian saint, Francis of Assisi,
in 1847. When considering the entire metropolitan area, however,
San Francisco currently has a total of 4.3 million inhabitants.
The mixture of Americans, Latinos – most of them Mexicans –
and Chinese is so incorporated into the city’s life that many signs
include three languages: English, Spanish and Mandarin. This is
the case with announcements on how to separate garbage, being
that the city’s successful collection practices, implemented in the
1970s, requires residents – under the threat of a fine – to place
all their recyclables together in the blue bins, useless trash in the

“Restos de comida e de podas de árvores são transformados em
adubo e vendidos a 200 vinícolas”, explica Robert Reed, relações-públicas da Recology, empresa privada que coleta e dá um fim
sustentável aos dejetos urbanos. Na pesquisa The Green Index,
San Francisco se destacou por reciclar 77% do seu lixo. Miami só
trata 18% e São Paulo cuida de apenas 1%.
Mandatória desde 2010, a compostagem foi bem-aceita. “Passei a
criar minhocas em casa para que minhas cascas de legumes e frutas servissem de alimento para elas”, contou Leora Sharone, vendedora que conhecemos no Heart of the City Farmers’ Market, feira de
rua que acontece às quartas e aos domingos na frente do City Hall,
o prédio da prefeitura (ficam diante dele, por sinal, alguns dos 30
locais públicos para recarregar baterias de carros elétricos como o
nosso Nissan Leaf). Em outra tarde, ao visitar a Hayes Valley Farm,
uma fazenda urbana, nos deparamos com um grupo de jovens levando em carrinhos de pedreiro galões de lixo repletos de sobras
de um restaurante da vizinhança para compostagem. “Acreditamos
que podemos ser um exemplo para outros bairros”, explicou Jay Rosenberg, um dos 100 voluntários que trabalham semanalmente ali.
A fazendinha faz o próprio mel, fornece a produção da horta orgânica a pacientes de câncer do hospital local, tem um recarregador
de baterias de celular movido a energia solar e se propõe a ensinar
os princípios da permacultura, um método de planejamento de assentamentos humanos sustentáveis.

sold to 200 vineyards,” explains Robert Reed, a public relations
agent for Recology, a private company which collects and disposes of urban waste sustainably. According to The Green Index
survey, San Francisco stands out for recycling 77% of its trash.
Miami only recycles 18%; and São Paulo, a mere 1%.
Mandatory since 2010, composting has been well accepted.
“I started keeping worms in my house and feeding the peels of
fruit and vegetables to them,” says Leora Sharone, a merchant
whom we met at the Heart of the City Farmers’ Market, held
in the street on Wednesdays and Sundays in front of City Hall
(right across, by the way, are some of the 30 public charging
stations for electric cars like our Nissan Leaf). On another afternoon, upon visiting Hayes Valley Farm, an urban farm, we
noticed a group of young people pushing wheelbarrows filled
with scraps from restaurants in the neighborhood for composting. “We believe that we can be an example for other neighborhoods,” explained Jay Rosenberg, one of the 100 volunteers that
work there every week. The little farm makes its own honey,
supplies produce from its organic garden to the local cancer
hospital, has a cell phone battery charger that runs on solar
energy and proposes to teach the principles of permaculture, a
method of planning sustainable human settlements.

A commitment to educating San Franciscans is also the driving
force behind the California Academy of Sciences, in the heart of
Golden Gate Park. On the terrace, the garden shaped like an arch
calls your attention, where circular windows allow the entrance
of sunlight and air circulation. Beneath this lunar scenery is a
greenhouse which contains Amazonian species that is itself one
floor above an amazing aquarium. There, groups of children can
interview divers while they’re underwater. Outside the gym, rows

Underdog, onde até cachorro-quente é sinônimo de healthy food:
as salsichas vêm de gado criado sem rações químicas, e são servidas em pães caseiros frescos com mostarda e ketchup orgânicos.
Quando o assunto é sustentabilidade, nenhuma mercearia da cidade é mais respeitada que a Rainbow Grocery, nascida em 1975
como uma c­ ooperativa de seguidores vegetarianos do guru indiano
Maharaj Ji. Como foi inevitável que a cooperativa abrisse suas gôndolas para industrializados, o guru deixou o negócio. Restaram os
237 donos-funcionários, entre eles Mary Murtagh, uma das pioneiras. “Muita coisa aqui é vendida a granel para minimizar o consumo
de embalagens, do arroz à farinha, das ervas aos diferentes tipos de
pasta”, diz Mary. Em tempo: San Francisco foi vanguarda também
no banimento completo do uso de sacolas plásticas, em 2007.

few blocks from the park is the colorful door of the Underdog, a
place where even hot-dogs are synonymous with healthy food: the
wieners come from livestock raised on natural feed and served on
fresh, homemade buns with organic ketchup and mustard.
When it comes to sustainability, though, there’s no grocery store
in the city more respected than Rainbow Grocery, born in 1975 as a
cooperative of vegetarian followers of the Indian guru Maharaj Ji.
Since it was inevitable that the cooperative’s shelves would stock industrialized foods, the guru left the business. That left the 237 owner-employees, among them Mary Murtagh, one of the pioneers. “Lots
of stuff here is sold in bulk in order to minimize the use of packaging,
everything from rice to flour, from herbs to different kinds of pasta,”
says Mary. By the way: San Francisco was also on the cutting edge
by completely banning the use of plastic bags in 2007.
TIROLESA SOBRE A FEIRA
Foi outro grupo espiritual da região, o Zen Center, que deu origem
ao restaurante Greens, primeiro vegetariano da cidade, aberto em
1979. Bem localizado, em um galpão envidraçado diante da marina de Fort Mason, o estabelecimento até hoje serve os monges
budistas com ingredientes produzidos em fazenda própria. A lista
de restaurantes verdes, não necessariamente vegetarianos, é vasta.
Todos se abastecem com pequenos produtores e cobram preços
quase 10% mais caros que os restaurantes comuns. Mas compensa.
Entre os recomendáveis estão o Bar Jules, ao lado da fazenda Hayes,
animado na happy hour; o Neptune’s, no Fisherman’s Wharf, que
ZIP LINE OVER THE MARKET
It was another of the region’s spiritual groups, the Zen Center, which
gave origin to the restaurant Greens, the first vegetarian restaurant
in the city, opened in 1979. Enjoying a good location, in a glass-fronted warehouse at the marina in Fort Mason, the establishment serves
Buddhist monks to date with ingredients produced on its own farm.
The list of green restaurants, which aren’t necessarily vegetarian, is
long. They are all supplied by small producers, and their prices are
almost 10% higher than normal restaurants. But it’s worth it. Among
the recommended are Bar Jules, next to the Hayes farm, which is lively during happy hour; Neptune’s, at Fisherman’s Wharf, which gets

um termo que explica que a casa segue princípios da antroposofia,
como rotação de cultivos e plantio conforme as fases da lua.
Você pode planejar bons dias ao ar livre dando uma esticada até
vinícolas sustentáveis dos vales de Napa e Sonoma. Se estiver com
um carro elétrico como o nosso, não se esqueça de recarregá-lo
antes, pois as tomadas elétricas públicas ainda são escassas. Ou
renda-se à paixão californiana por programas ao ar livre praticando, durante o verão, a tirolesa da Ziptrek Ecotours sobre a feira de
artesanato diante do Ferry Building. Depois, cruze a rua e se perca entre as barraquinhas de frutas, legumes e verduras do Ferry
Building Market, que acontece às terças, às quintas e aos sábados.
Os vendedores puxam conversa, oferecem delícias para degustação e sempre tem algum maluco com roupa divertida. Foi ali que
conhecemos Joseph Minocchi, um produtor de ervas e de flores de
Sonoma. “San Francisco pode estar orgulhosa de ser considerada
a mais verde da América, mas tem muita coisa para melhorar”,

of the Ferry Building in the summer. After, cross the street and

his part. After all, he’s a typical peace-and-love San Franciscan.
