JUAN DIEGO TRACK & FIELD: Morgan meet
Big efforts propel Juan Diego to big memories
By Bruce Smith
MatchupUT.com
The Juan Diego track
and field team drove to Morgan
with a full complement of
athletes, took advantage of the
good competition – and
weather – and came back with
some of its best memories of
the season.
“Any time we would get
our full team at a meet, we did
all right,” said coach Dan John.
“It’s just that we had soccer
and football meetings, so it was
rare. This meet we were full …
pretty strong.”
“Morgan runs a great
track meet,” he added. “When
you go against Morgan, you’re
going against the best athletes
in 3A. If you do well, you get a
sense of where you are.”
The Soaring Eagle
enjoyed the weather, as well as
a couple of nice days that led
up to the meet, which allowed
them to train outdoors.
Morgan won both the
boys and girls team
competition, with Juan Diego
second and Judge Memorial
third.
The Juan Diego girls got
great finishes from Brooke
Sorenson, Kiley Green, Lindsay
John and Annabah Glasser.
The boys dominated the
sprints and Mondo Yamaguchi
had one of his best meets of
the season, winning the 800
and taking second in the 1,600.
Oliver Weight carries the baton during Juan Diego’s win in the 1,600-meter relay.
“This was a fun part of
the season,” coach John said.
“Mondo is different. He has
heart, you know. This was the
meet where some people
started to look at our team and
say ‘wow.’”
The boys sprints were
led by Lars Gunderson, who
won the 100 meters in 11.30
seconds, Oliver Weight (won
the 200) and Jon Morales
(winner of the 400). Eric Heinz,
Cayden Sanchez and Dustin
Poore also finished near the
top. When you combine that
with Yamaguchi’s efforts in the
800 and 1,600, it was one of
the team’s best efforts of the
year.
Juan Diego also won the
Page 10
boys 400 and medley relays.
On the girls side,
Glasser’s performances –
winning the 300-meter hurdles
and joining Tyler Cain near the
top in the 100 hurdles – was
also impressive. It was also the
last meet where she would
compete.
“We (the coaches)
predicted Annabah would
easily place in state, but she
blew her leg out in a club
soccer game,” said coach John.
“She really started to improve
here.”
Teammate Emily Bruder
had also been hurt playing
soccer, so this was the second
soccer-related injury the team
suffered.
