1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In 2012 the Centre for Textile Science and Technology (2C2T) has been involved worldwide in the development of
textile and clothing science and technology, with interest in subjects that are more relevant to the industry’s
competitiveness. In a broad sense, it can be referred that those subjects are related with Advanced Materials and
Structures, Technical and Functional Textiles, Design and Quick Response Strategies. Therefore the goals are
centred in the development of innovative solutions in strategic and emergent areas involving the textile chain:
• Development of new materials /structures/ products
• Innovative and improved manufacturing processes, methods, equipments and integrated systems
• Development of supporting technologies to materials/product engineering
• Development of new design methodologies, management and product marketing
The great majority of projects are developed in collaborative partnerships with other research units, institutions and
enterprises. This approach significantly contributed to develop synergies and stimulate research, carried out using
internal resources and external financing resulting from national and international funded projects.
Concerning the scientific activity, the performance of the unit in 2012 was similar to the previous years and can be
quantified by the following indicators:
3 chapters of books, 57 papers in international journals, 97 papers in conference proceedings, 29 communications
in international conferences, 10 organization of seminars and conferences, 6 doctoral theses concluded, 38 doctoral
theses in progress, 4 patents, supported by 40 funded projects and other non funded projects financed by the
National Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) Unit funding.
In this year 8 new projects were started, with a total budget of 637 thousand euros, being 630 thousand euros
allocated to University of Minho. Concerning the 40 ongoing projects within 2C2T, they present a global funding
of 19,9 million euros, being 4,3 million euros the total amount allocated to University of Minho.
2. UNIT STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION
The 2C2T Centre started its activity in 1978, being the first unit of R&D in Portugal specialized in the development
of Science and Technology of textile materials and processes. Research activity is organized in three research
groups:
• Textile Physics (coordinated by the Principal Investigator Rosa Maria Vasconcelos),
• Textile Chemistry (coordinated by the Principal Investigator Maria Teresa Amorim),
• Management, Design and Marketing (coordinated by the Principal Investigator Raul Fangueiro).

The management structure of the Unit is composed by the Director (Unit Coordinator) assisted by a Vice- Director,
the Steering Committee and the Scientific Board. The 2C2T has an External Advisory Committee involving four
individualities which provide the Unit with competent and experienced opinions regarding Unit’s performance and
strategy.
The Director is responsible for representing the Unit, nominates the Principal Investigators of the Research groups
and, assisted by the Vice-Director, ensures the management activities.The Steering Committee, which comprises
the Director and the Principal Investigators of the Research groups, ensures the management of the Research
groups and is responsible for elaborating the annual reports, activity and budget plans. The Scientific Board
competences are mainly concerned with the approval of the activity reports and financial budget and decide on the
general organization of the Unit and on the research activities to be carried out within the Research groups.
The unit involves 25 PhD researchers working in the three above identified areas. Several grant researchers are also
involved. (See Annex I)
3. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The Unit adopts a multidisciplinary approach in carrying out research, involving multiple competences, concerning
materials, product, processes and equipment development, design, management and marketing. The research
activity is highly internationalized through a collaborative effort with the most important worldwide universities,
research centres, enterprises, individually or inside networks, connected with running projects or concerning
forthcoming goals. The participation of the Unit in international networks of experts, research institutions dealing
with intelligent and smart textiles and European standardisation concerning technical and functional textiles and
functionalisation of textiles, opens wide chances to be on the leading edge in what concerns innovation
opportunities.
The Textile Physics Research Group research activities are oriented towards the engineering design of innovative
high-tech multifunctional textiles integrating new materials and on the development of flexible and intelligent
processes control systems. The major emphasis is in the development of textile-based products integrating
electronic systems (e-textiles,i-textiles) for protection, safety and personal empowerment applications, textiles with
improved functionality (medical textiles) and textiles and clothing for physiological comfort. Established and
newly developed devices for monitoring and real-time control are being used on the study of the dynamic
behaviour and fault prediction of sewing and knitting processes. Similarly, developed textile support equipment is
being used to design, improve and evaluate materials and products properties, performance and behavior and to
establish performance standards for raw materials and yarn production based on the use of prediction and decisionsupport tools. Studies on sensory analysis of textiles are also being conducted to assess handle and predict total
comfort properties.

The Textile Chemistry Research Group is organized under the concept of integrated research work covering
transversal fields of interest in the areas of textile polymers and textile processing. The major emphasis has been
fundamental knowledge in textile related sciences and industrial applications, towards development of
environmentally friendly finishing processes and functional products. Three main research areas are active:
Chemistry of Functional Textile Materials, Fibre Bioprocesses, Sustainable Processing and Finishing of Textile
Materials.
The Chemistry of Functional Textile Materials domain has been active in dye chemistry and adsorption (synthesis
of new catalysts for degradation of dyes in effluents), controlled delivery of substances (liposomes and
microcapsules), active textile materials (PCM-phase change materials) and reactive textiles (anti-bacterial textiles).
In what concerns the Fibre Bioprocesses area, intensive work has been produced regarding mechanisms of
enzyme’s application in textile processing, namely by modification of natural and synthetic fibrous polymers.
The Sustainable Processing and Finishing of Textile Materials area concerns plasmatic surface treatments in order
to radically change finishing processes and products, with high level of effects, higher durability, lower costs and
less products; electrochemical technologies, advanced oxidation processes and modification of membranes for
wastewater treatments are contributions to sustainable solutions for textile industry pollution problems;
development of new materials for reusable medical textiles with increased resistance to washing, drying,
sterilisation has also been the aim of important developments.
The Management, Design and Marketing Research Group has been undertaking research in the design and
marketing of fiber based products for a variety of applications. The core theme concerns the use of fibers and
fibrous structures as engineering materials. The main applications have been in concrete reinforcement, textile
reinforced composites for industrial applications (especially transport systems), in the fashion business and high
performance clothing for hygiene, healthcare and well-being, sports and protection.
The problems are dealt within the framework of a total product design approach. The design of new products is
seen in a business context and well integrated in the marketing strategy. These competences may concern visual
communication (colour, pattern, style, shape, etc.), tactile communication (handle) and functionalization leading to
performance and comfort properties of finished fibres and structures (2D/3D), depending on the applications
envisaged.
Market and emerging technologies analyses are performed (exploratory generation of ideas) in order to develop a
specification, a concept, a detailed design and a prototype and then the prototype is tested to evaluate its total
performance in meeting the requirements. CAD systems and simulation tools (e.g. FEA) are used for design.
The research work carried out by the Research Groups is supported by projects funded by the industry and national
or international research programmes. In the following table the on-going projects are described in brief.

Publications
Dissemination is a key factor to diffuse Unit activities and at the same time to promote excellence.The knowledge
that evolved from the research work carried out was disseminated to the scientific community through
publications and, when applicable, protected by patents. The table below presents a summary of the number of

OUTREACH ACTIVITIES
The purposes of the outreach activities carried out by the research Unit were:
• Raise awareness of the research carried out
• Inform the community
• Promote projects results and engage other researchers and stakeholders
These activities involved the organization and participation in conferences, workshops and technical fairs
targeting the scientific community, the industry, the institution and the government, as well as, the dissemination
through the mass media to promote public interest on textile-related research and education.

5. TRAINING ACTIVITIES
The Unit is responsible for a three years Doctoral Programme in Textile Enginneering leading to a PhD degree in
Textile Science, Textile Technology, Textile Management or Textile Design.
During the year of 2012 4 PhD thesis were concluded and 27 thesis are on going (See Annex III)
6. UNIT REPRESENTATION ON EXTERNAL BOARDS AND COMMITTEES
The Unit, through its members, is involved in the management boards of research and technological
organizations, on standardization technical committees (associated to the national member of CEN- European
Committee for standardization) and on scientific comittees of technical journals.
