Empresa associada Expediente NEW,S Fevereiro 2013 2 Editorial Editorial A company made of people The last few years were intense for the company. We managed to establish ourselves as one of the largest port, maritime and logistics operators in the country. This achievement was possible thanks to all the collaborators who dream of a company which is great and have worked to make this a reality. This edition of NEW,S brings you a retrospective of the main activities of the Wilson Sons Group in 2012, with a special mention for the inauguration of the Tecon Salvador expansion. Thanks to a larger area and more modern equipment, the terminal contributed towards attracting investments to the state of Bahia, which has proved to be a tool for its development. In 2012, we also increased the customs areas of the Santo André Inland Port (EADI) as well as inaugurating the São Paulo Logistics Centre in Itapevi. With the incorporation of these two units, Wilson Sons Logistics is now able to offer the complete range of logistics to the state of São Paulo. We also modernized Brasco’s Sistema Niterói with building works at the Ilha da Conceição and Guaxindiba bases. Furthermore, our outlook for 2013 is very positive. We are to inaugurate the Guarujá II shipyard, which will double the production capacity of Wilson Sons Shipyards, allowing for the construction of larger vessels. In February, Wilson Sons Logistics started operations in the Suape Logistics Centre, which is a strategic area due to its proximity to the port. We are also planning to deploy new vessels for port and offshore support fleets. This edition also features an interview with the president of the State of Bahia Docks Company (Codeba), José Muniz Rebouças. In Tour around WS, NEW,S showcases the new features of the William Salomon Maritime Improvement Center and speaks about the launching of the book on the Group’s 175 year history. And in the Historical Awareness column, we will learn more about the Creating Bonds volunteer program, which has been operating for five years. Have a nice read! Boa leitura! NESSES TRÊS ANOS A EMPRESA VEM APRESENTANDO CRESCIMENTO ECONÔMICO, COM AUMENTO DE RECEITA, AMPLIAÇÃO DE LUCROS E UM AMPLO PROJETO DE INVESTIMENTOS E MELHORIAS NA INFRAESTRUTURA PORTUÁRIA. “UMA DAS CONQUISTAS DA CODEBA FOI O RECONHECIMENTO DA IMPORTÂNCIA DO SETOR PORTUÁRIO, NÃO SÓ PARA A ECONOMIA BAIANA, MAS TAMBÉM PARA TODO O NORDESTE BRASILEIRO”, AFIRMA REBOUÇAS. SEGUNDO O EXECUTIVO, AS PERSPECTIVAS PARA 2013 SÃO POSITIVAS. “VIVEMOS NA BAHIA UM MOMENTO DE AVANÇOS E CRESCIMENTO. ESTAMOS NOS PREPARANDO PARA UM SALTO DE QUALIDADE NA ECONOMIA DO ESTADO, NÃO APENAS NA ÁREA DE PRODUTOS PRIMÁRIOS, MAS TAMBÉM NA PROSPECÇÃO DE NOVAS INDÚSTRIAS, E A CODEBA ESTÁ INSERIDA NESSE CRESCIMENTO.” M DOS PRINCIPAIS PARCEIROS DO EXPANSÃO, O PRESIDENTE DA NEW,S Fevereiro 2013 4 José Muniz Rebouças, presidente da Codeba: Reconhecimento do setor portuário cresceu na Bahia José Muniz Rebouças, president of Codeba: Recognition of the ports industry grew in Bahia NEW,S | Quais os desafios encontrados pela Codeba? NEW,S | Diante disso, quais foram as ações realizadas? According to the president of Codeba, José Muniz Rebouças, the state will increase the quality and the ports will be benefited by this One of the Tecon Salvador’s main partners in its expansion process, the president of the State of Bahia Docks Company (Codeba), José Muniz Rebouças, celebrates the achievements which have taken place during his time in management, which started in 2009. During these three years, the company has been displaying economic growth, revenue has increased and profits have grown, also there is a large investment and improvement project in place for the port’s infrastructure. “One of the accomplishments of Codeba was the recognition of the port sector’s importance, not only for Bahia’s economy, but also for the entire north-east of Brazil”, says Rebouças. According to the executive, the outlook for 2013 is positive. “We are currently undergoing a moment of advancement and growth in Bahia. We are getting ready for performing a leap in the quality of the state’s economy, not only in the area of primary products, but also in the prospecting of new industries, and Codeba is a part of said growth.” estrutura para atender as necessidades impostas. NEW,S | Como você avalia o ano de 2012? Além disso, o novo Marco estimula a concorrência, assegura amplo acesso à infraestrutura portuária e incentiva a participação do setor privado. . NEW,S | Did the company report any profits in the last three years? José Muniz Rebouças | The main challenge we faced during this period was to reorient the company’s path to a virtuous cycle of growth. Between 2007 and 2009 we had undergone a period of crisis which was very severe in terms of foreign trade, marked by two serious crisis scenarios: the European and the American. These crises affected commercial relations between countries, and this exerts a direct impact on port activities. In general terms, the main difficulties found at the beginning of the period were related to changes in the economy and general issues of the national and international port market. José Muniz Rebouças | Yes, that is also an important achievement. We saw growing accumulated profits throughout these years. In 2009, the total revenue was R$ 71 million, in 2010 it rose to R$ 95 million and in 2011 it rose again, this time to R$ 115 million. We expect to close 2012 with a positive variation in cargo movement of approximately a 10% increase on the previous year. This represents a positive reaction from the market, which has perceived the potential of the ports of Bahia and now opts for moving cargo through here. NEW,S | Como você avalia o ano de 2012? NEW,S | In the face of this scenario, which were the measures taken? José Muniz Rebouças | Our obligation was to return to a cycle of growth. In order to do this, we had to reorganize processes, presenting ourselves to the national and international ports market as a company which was competitive and in possession of the required infrastructure to attend to the needs at hand. We got to work on the reorganization of operational and administrative issues, the recuperation of port equipment, development of infrastructure improvement projects, securing of resources for tenders, contacts with old customers and developed prospecting. All of this with the objective of overcoming the crisis and placing the company on a cycle of growth. NEW,S | Which are the main achievements of your term as president? José Muniz Rebouças | The recognition of the importance of the port sector not only for the economy of Bahia, but also for the entire Brazilian north-eastern region. This leads to new investments, both by the government and the private sector. We managed to make Brazil look more closely at our eastern coast, and the ports of Bahia in particular. Investments in the port sector were very concentrated around the north-south axis. Therefore we started to claim these investments, not only for the ports, but also for access to these. This allowed us to further accentuate our competitiveness. In more internal terms, we managed to restructure the company to fit the profile of a port authority. Codeba had been behaving like an operator. We broke that paradigm and little by little we are making the company see and understand itself as a port authority, a planning, furtherance and support company, not only where the state and national economic guidelines are concerned, but also the operators which are present in the areas of our ports. NEW,S | What are the prospects for 2013? José Muniz Rebouças | Our aim is to continue at the same rate, both where traffic and investments are concerned. We currently have infrastructure and maintenance work being carried out in all three ports. The outlook for 2013 is very positive. We are undergoing a moment of advancement and growth in Bahia. We are getting ready for performing a leap in the quality of the state’s economy, not only in the area of primary products, but also in the prospecting of new industries, and Codeba is a part of said growth. The enlargement of Tecon Salvador and the adapting of the berth for larger vessels will allow for the attracting of new lines to Salvador, for example. The allocation of a berth for coasting trade purposes is another potential which I think is undoubtedly deserving of a mention. NEW,S | And the infrastructure investments in Salvador? José Muniz Rebouças | The Port of Salvador has finished dredging works for deepening to 15 meters, at a cost of R$ 55 million. Furthermore, Wilson Sons, which operates Tecon Salvador, invested R$ 180 million on new equipment, which will increase movement from 250 to 530 thousand TEU per year. Among the newly-acquired equipment are three new Super-Post Panamax container cranes and six electric RTGs, which are overhead cranes to carry out the movement of containers over the yard. NEW,S | Which are the investments planned for the Port of Aratu? José Muniz Rebouças | The Port of Aratu represents 60% of Codeba’s income, therefore we pay special attention to it. I’m in a position to confirm that there is where we have the most number of active projects. We have already finished the dredging and rock removal works for deepening to 15 meters at a cost of R$ 60 million. We have one of the main renting plans of the port underway. There are many companies interested in investing and operating in Aratu. There are proposals for the construction of a new solids terminal focused on iron mining worth around R$ 300 million, 50 of which will come from public investment. There will also be the implementation of the third terminal which specializes in operations involving liquids, which will result in an investment of almost R$ 1.05 billion, R$ 950 of which will come from private sources. NEW,S | What are the plans for expanding the Port of Ilhéus? José Muniz Rebouças | Ilhéus was the port which had the most impact during our time of administration. When we took over the company, it moved around 40 thousand tons. In 2012, it totaled almost 500 thousand tons. A large growth in segmented cargo, pioneer, such as sugar, which we managed to bring to that port for the first time. As for projects, we will be carrying out access dredging works to 14 meters depth and environmental compensation works in the beaches to the north. We are currently waiting for the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) to grant us the license for maintenance dredging. NEW,S | And finally, what are your expectations where the new Port Regulations Framework is concerned? José Muniz Rebouças | The Port Regulations Framework lays out guidelines for the expansion and modernization of the sector and optimizes the infrastructure of port installations. It stimulates an amelioration of management, as well as valuing and training manpower at the port and guaranteeing improved efficiency and safety of the activities carried out. Furthermore, the new Framework stimulates competition, insures widespread access to the port’s infrastructure and encourages the participation of the private sector. In short, I believe that it will define and diversify a wide range of new opportunities for ports throughout the country. The company remodeled the courses for its staff, adopting a more modern and comprehensive format. “Our objective is to bring together the excellence offered by Wilson Sons in operations with tugboats through courses and training sessions for the improvement and knowledge of crew members”, says Gerson Luiz Rodriguez da Silva, the Improvement Centre’s manager. In 2013, the number of classes will grow, in order to be able to attend to the rest of the crew, not only the commanders. The classes will be aimed at all of the company’s crew members, and the disciplinary content will be based on long-standing models of the maritime community, subject to evaluation by a pedagogue. “Within this context, we are pioneers among Brazilian tugboat companies”, says the manager. “Quanto maior a distância, maior é a economia. O tabaco cresceu 16%, as cargas congeladas aumentaram 35% e a madeira evoluiu 14%. . Tecon Rio Grande está otimista com a atração de commodities agrícolas em 2013 Tecon Rio Grande is optimistic about attracting agricultural commodities in 2013 NEW,S Fevereiro 2013 15 Retrospective 2012 Growing in order to grow further Wilson Sons expands and inaugurates units in 2012 with the development of businesses in mind Normally, infrastructure projects undergo a long maturing process. They are endeavors which require much input and long construction periods. In the last few years, and believing in the potential of the Brazilian economy, the Wilson Sons Group announced a number of different investments, some of which were concluded in 2012, in keeping with the Investment Plan. In July, the company inaugurated the São Paulo Logistics Center in Itapevi which, in conjunction with the Santo André Inland Port (EADI), customs-bonded in September, is now able to offer the entire range of logistics to the state of São Paulo. In November, as a result of an R$ 180 million investment, the expansion of Tecon Salvador, which modernized and increased the capacity of the terminal, was concluded. Also in 2012, the group launched three tugboats and two PSVs and modernized Brasco’s Sistema Niterói. “It was a year in which many projects ceased to be only on paper. That is heartening. Thanks to these expansions, new units and vessels, we will be stronger in continuing our successful trajectory”, says the CEO of the Wilson Sons Group, Cezar Baião. In 2013, other expected investments will also be concluded, such as the inauguration of Guarujá II, which doubles the production capacity of Wilson Sons Shipyards, the start of operations of the Suape Logistics Centre in Pernambuco and the launching of more vessels. TECON SALVADOR MODERNIZED Tecon Salvador, the container terminal of the capital of Bahia, is already preparing for receiving the world’s largest vessels in operation. “With improved capacity, we will seek cargo which leaves from other ports of Bahia or even different states”, says the executive director of Tecon Salvador, Demir Lourenço Junior. “We have worked actively in the attracting of cargo from the north of the state of Espírito Santo and the north-west of Minas Gerais. We also have a business focus which will be directed towards the states of Goiás and Tocantins.” The expansion of the terminal included buying new equipment. The company acquired three Super-Post Panamax container cranes and six rubber tired gantry cranes (RTGs). The container cranes, which move containers from the quay to the vessels, have 60-metre long booms which are capable of attending to 22 container-wide ships. One of the segments which tends to grow in conjunction with expansion is that of refrigerated products. Tecon invested in an increase in the number of reefer sockets and is focused on attracting cargo of this type in the first semester of 2013. In order to help in this endeavor, the company in- NEW,S Fevereiro 2013 16 troduced Reefer Intelligence, specialized attendance for refrigerated cargo COASTING TRADE NAVIGATION As part of its expansion process, Tecon Salvador re-inaugurated the Cais de Ligação, a preferential space reserved for coasting trade navigation. With a 240 meter-long and 12-metre deep berth, the quay is prepared for receiving vessels focused on that modality. As well as coaster ships, the berth will also be able to receive long haul and smaller vessels. In order to stimulate the use of coasting, both Tecon Salvador and Tecon Rio Grande, which is also operated by Wilson Sons, carried out events last year. At the seminar “Advantages of the Coasting Trade”, which took place in October in association with Codeba, the Federation of Industries of the state of Bahia (Fieb), the Logistics and Supply Chain Institute (Ilos) and ship builders, the factors which explain the potential of growth in the coasting trade were discussed, these include the trend towards a higher usage of containers at sea, the expansion of intermodal transport and investments in berths and exclusive ports for attending to this modality. “Conditions in Brazil, which has an enormous area of navigable coast and concentrates a large part of its riches near the coast, are extremely favorable for coasting trade navigation. However, there are some factors which still hinder the growth of this mode, such as the amount of red tape and the lack of incentives to cushion fuel costs.”, says Patricia Iglesias, Tecon Salvador sales manager. She states that the company developed a commercial area which caters exclusively for the coasting trade and that they are planning to open an office in Manaus (AM). “We wish to showcase the advantages of this modality to companies. We expect the coasting trade to grow by at least 15% this year, and that’s what we are working towards.” In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the seminar “The Coasting Trade: A Logistic Alternative”, organized by Tecon Rio Grande in Porto Alegre gathered ship builders and representatives from the industry. The event, which was sponsored by the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Fiergs), and almost 140 participants attended. The coasting trade has been growing very much in the last few years, boosted by the vigor of the country’s economy, says Tecon Rio Grande’s sales director Thierry Rios. In 2010, 21,774 containers destined for the coasting trade went through Tecon. Last year, this number grew 23%, reaching 26,798 containers. “We are currently seeing a crisis in the United States and Europe, which are traditionally the strongest markets. In Brasil, due to the increase in the population’s buying power, the internal market has strengthened and companies have increasingly been turning their sights towards within the country. This stimulates the coasting trade”, explains the executive. At the event, the coasting trade ship builders were able to showcase instances of success to the participating companies. “There are many advantages of coasting when compared to the road network transport option”, says Thierry Rios. “The containers are not at risk of breaking down and the companies do not have to pay for insurance for theft, which is commonplace on the roads. Furthermore, the coasting trade is more sustainable, drastically reducing greenhouse effect gas emissions.” Rios further states that the costs derived from coasting are lower. “The larger the distance, the higher the savings. Companies could save between 20% and 30% in logistics costs using coasting navigation. And with the implementation of the law which limits truck driver working hours, the modality has become the best alternative for orders to be delivered on schedule.” TECON RIO GRANDE FOCUSSED ON 2013 If 2012 was a difficult year for Tecon Rio Grande, the outlook for 2013 is very positive. Since the beginning, the global prospects for last year were harsh. “In spite of this, we managed to keep the number of containers moved stable”, says the sales director. They came to 636 thousand TEU in 2012, compared to the 394 thousand for the previous year. Even when taking into account the stable performance, some sectors increased the cargo volume. Tobacco grew 16%, frozen cargo increased 35% and wood rose 14%. The installation of a Martini Meat refrigerated warehouse meant an important achievement for business, generating almost 3 thousand new containers in 2012. This volume had been leaving via the ports of Santa Catarina. Thierry Rios also points at the relevance of intermodal transport for the businesses of Tecon Rio Grande. The cargo volume which reaches the terminal through the Brado rail line grew 41%. The client base for this modality also grew, and currently there are more than 50. The board has high expectations for 2013, as it is expected that Rio Grande do Sul will see record high numbers. “We are hoping to attract agricultural bulk to containers”, states the director. “We have already seen good results and will intensify actions in this sector.” According to Brasco’s executive director Renata Pereira, the modernization is part of the company’s on-going quest for excellence. “Brasco operates in a safe and efficient manner, continuously improving its infrastructure and processes as well as training and investing in its team. In this way, we are able to guarantee excellence in our activities as well as the satisfaction of our clients and collaborators”, says Renata. Diogo Salomão, Planning and Logistics manager at Brasco, explains that the company carried out a detailed analysis of its needs and decided on a variety of infrastructure projects, with HSE, operations and systems as well as changes to accommodate the demands and requirements of clients in mind. Work started in May 2011 and is expected to finish before mid-2013. All in all, the projects require an investment of R$ 15 million. The executive explains that Brasco’s objective is to make Sistema Niterói more secure and competitive from the point of view of infrastructure. “Safety is an asset and also our main product”, says Salomão. “We are a company of safe operations. That is how the market sees us and we intend to keep it that way.” The works are at a final stage at the base in Niterói, they cover paving, drainage, berth reinforcement and renovations to the administration building among other actions. As for Guaxindiba, the projects cover different issues, such as small changes in the pipe yard or the construction of an administrative building. Works at the unit are expected to finish in 2013. CLIENT BASE In 2012, Brasco regularly operated for Chevron, Anadarko, Statoil, Repsol and WesternGeco; also Petrobras in Porto de São Luís (MA). This year, the company maintains the same client base in Niterói, but they will also carry out operations for Total in the second semester and British Petroleum (BP) at the Port of Salvador. “We are faced with challenges”, says Brasco’s sales director, Thiago Freitas. “One of which is to broaden the focus of our activities to include the companies which provide services for the oil and gas industry.” . Wilson, Sons Logistics Banking on international trade Customs-docking of EADI Santo André and the inauguration of São Paulo Logistics Centre (CL) marked 2012 São Paulo, which is the main entry point of cargo in the country, received a new Wilson Sons Logistics unit, the São Paulo Logistics Centre in Itapevi, and had the Santo André Inland Port (EADI) entirely customs-docked. As well as the customs dock, which was inaugurated in September, the unit was also expanded. The EADI gained 10.8 thousand m² storage and 7 thousand m² bonded yard, totaling an area of 92 thousand m² which is totally bonded. Currently, the Santo André unit already heads the ranking of graving docks which are under the jurisdiction of the São Paulo Bonded Area, with 3,800 Import Declarations per month. The expectations are to have this number grow in conjunction with the growth of customs-bonded space. EADI Santo André operates in conjunction with the São Paulo Logistics Centre, which was inaugurated in July. Together, they comprise the Wilson Sons logistic network in São Paulo, made up of transport units which link the Port of Santos and the Guarulhos and Viracopos airports to these terminals. “Wilson Sons Logistics is renowned for comprehensively attending to the needs of our clients in the state of São Paulo”, explains the company´s executive director, Thomas Rittscher III. LOGISTICS CENTER Wilson Sons Logistics invested R$ 10 million on the São Paulo Logistics Centre to bring the most modern infrastructures for import, storage and distribution to the unit. “Our proposal is to integrate the entire logistics chain in order to guarantee comprehensive and customized solutions”, says Rittscher. “At our unit, we develop solutions for segments we define as key in our development strategy.” Amongst these segments are pharmaceutical products and cosmetics. As well as the traditional services, Wilson Sons Logistics offers segregated spaces and refrigerated chambers for these clients. The company also offers solutions for project cargo, involving equipment of large dimensions which requires planning and specific operational resources. The automotive sector is of interest to the company, as it is geared towards clients for whom import is an important business factor. Currently, Wilson Sons Logistics already caters for importers, circulating vehicles, motorbikes and spare parts. The company is also focused on the alimentary and drinks sector, especially for premium products such as wine. At the end of 2012, the São Paulo Logistics Centre reached 70% occupancy at the warehouse. The main clients were L’Occitane (cosmetics), GE Healthcare (equipment), BMW (motorbikes) and Ansell (protective gloves). As for the wine segment, the main clients were Winebrands and Mercovino, and the company is starting operations for New Wine. In 2013, the Logistics Centre will see some novelties, such as the building of an entirely acclimatized area exclusively dedicated to GE. The works should be finished before May. Resultado de um investimento de R$ 1,5 milhão, a Central Wilson Sons Towage Rebocadores da Wilson Sons participam de operação especial no Porto de Santos Awards and planning Wilson Sons tugboats will partake of the special operation at the Port of Santos Award granted by Petrobras and the expansion of the tool used for tracking vessels showcase the quality of towage services 2012 was marked not only by the expansion of Wilson Sons Towage, but also by the acknowledgement of the quality of its services and strategies to increase operational safety and planning. Said acknowledgement came in the form of the Petrobras Responsible Partnership Program (PPR) award, which took place in May. Sobrare, a part of Wilson Sons Towage, was considered a prominent company in the category of Operational Services in 2011. It was the fourth time the company had partaken of the PPR. For Sérgio Guedes, Wilson Sons Towage Operations director, the tribute was an acknowledgement of work well done by Sobrare. “To be considered prominent company at the PPR showcases the evolution of our partnership with Petrobras. Our vessels are amongst the most modern in the market and we are prepared for attending to any type of demand”, he said. In 2012, the company launched three new vessels - Pictor in January, Hamal in May and Delphinus in November. The three Azimuthal-propelled tugboats were built at the Guarujá I shipyard and have Damen technology and project engineering. This year, the fleet will grow even further. In February, the company will receive the Telescopium tugboat and is preparing for the delivery of two further vessels, as part of a cycle founded by the Marine Merchant Fund (FMM). In 2011, the Fund authorized a US$ 150 million loan to pay for the building of 12 azimuthal vessels. “The first tugboat of this cycle should start operations in October this year. The vessels will be built by Wilson Sons Shipyards, in Guarujá (SP)”, says the executive. “To have a shipyard in the group represents an important competitive differentiating factor, as it allows us to update the technology and guarantees deliveries within the foreseen deadlines.” Last year, the company also carried out important special operations. The relocation manoeuvres of the P-58 in Rio Grande, and the P-62 in Suape were carried out for Petrobras. Wilson Sons Towage also partook of the launching of the Zumbi dos Palmares oil tanker, the second vessel of Transpetro´s Fleet Modernization and Expansion Program (Promef), as well as of the arrival of new container cranes to the Port of Santos. Wilson Sons Towage has the largest port support fleet in Brazil, with over 70 vessels throughout the country´s coastline, of which 53 have azimuthal technology, which means their performance is far superior. PLANNED AND SECURE OPERATIONS In order to increase operational safety and efficiency, last year Wilson Sons Towage increased the number of vessels tracked by the Tugboat Operation Center (*COR*). The Center is a technological resource which remotely tracks the company´s vessels and generates indicators on the use of tugboats, collaborating in strategic planning and minimizing the risk of accidents, it is the result of an R$ 1.5 million investment. The COR´s pilot project started in 2010 by studying the technology available. The company sought software which was already available in the market and analyzed whether these software tools were adequate or whether they would have to develop their own. As a result of these studies, Wilson Sons Towage opted for using Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), provided by Transas. “The tool which proved to be more appropriate was VTS. In order to test the quality of the software, we visited a Canadian company which also uses it. We were impressed by what we saw”, says Sérgio Guedes. After the training period, the COR became operational at the Santos unit in 2011, looking after the vessels operating in the ports of Santos and São Sebastião. The tugboats catering for the ports of Rio de Janeiro and Sepetiba were connected to the Centre last year. The company is currently working to integrate the vessels which operate in the Ports of Paranaguá and Vitória. Once this is done, the COR will track 23 tugboats in all. A year for records Wilson Sons Shipping Agency beats its own record 2012 has made itself a place in the history of Wilson Sons Shipping Agency. The company closed the year with its best result. “We are reporting growth year after year, despite the crisis. This showcases the good judgment of our strategy”, says Christian von Lachmann, executive director. As for the Tramp segment, it registered 3,137 vessel stopovers, this being the first time it had surpassed the 3 thousand stopover mark. The company also started to act as a shipping agent for ThyssenKrupp embarkations. There was also an increase in the attendance to other clients such as Sinergy, Noble and Vale. “This increase in stopovers was driven by the well-placed judgment call of attending vessels embarking solid bulk for international clients.”, said Frederico Sawabini, general Tramp manager. As for the Liner segment, there were 3,680 stopovers, the best performance of the last six years. The main clients were the Mitsui and Hanjin ship builders, confirms the Shared Service Hub (CSC) and Projects Manager, Flavia Carvalho. The main highlight of the year was one of the most challenging jobs for the company, and one which had the support of the entire team. The company was responsible for the coordination of the international logistics for the import of a cement plant from China to Brazil. The equipment, which was ordered by Cimento Tupi for the duplication of their Pedra do Sino factory, in Carandai (MG), started embarkation in December 2011 and lasted until September 2012. Successful completion was only possible thanks to the knowledge acquired by the business managers. Wilson Sons Shipping Agency was responsible for contracting oceanic transport for Tupi, the terminals for embarkation in Shanghai and Rio de Janeiro for unloading, the cargo inspection for both ports, the supervision of loading and offloading of the vessels, the customs house broker with expertise in duty exemption and special heavy cargo road transportation for delivery at final destination. The success of this work was guaranteed by Wilson Sons Shipping Agency expertise and its logistics manager, Renato Couto. In total there were 8 embarkations, 5 of which were from Shanghai and the other 3 were residual (far smaller quantities) from Europe. International events in Brasil may boost TransVisas If the eyes of the world are to be turned towards Brazil in the next few years with the carrying out of the different international events, TransVisas, which is a Wilson Sons Shipping Agency company, intends to broaden the range of services offered to foreigners who come to work in our country. Currently, the company focusses on temporary and permanent work visas for foreigners, mainly crew members from offshore and coasting navigation vessels. “Brazil is to host Rock in Rio, the Confedera- tions Cup in 2013, the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. These events will attract a large amount of foreigners and they will be in need of a solid company such as TransVisas, with the backing of Wilson Sons, to help them along the process”, says Christian von Lachmann, Wilson Sons Shipping Agency´s executive director. TransVisa works on the legalizing of foreigners who have come to live in Brazil and work for large companies or industries. Currently, the company operates within the chemical, navigation, offshore and naval construction industries as well as other technical areas. For example, TransVisas is a pioneer in the process of importing maritime manpower from Mercosul. In conjunction with the port authorities, the company managed to allow the issuing of obligatory documents for work on-board vessels with Brazilian flags for foreigners in possession of a temporary visa and who are registered through the Mercosul Agreement, providing a more comprehensive interpretation of the existing legislation. “Somos movidos a desafios. HSE Wilson Sons receives Health and Safety management award Implemented in the Guarujá shipyard, WS+ was acclaimed nationally and extended to other business areas of the Group Wilson Sons´ WS+ project in the Health, Safety and the Environment areas (HSE) was rewarded in December by coming first in the 2012 Dupont Award for Health and Safety Management of Staff. Implemented at the Guarujá (SP) shipyard in 2011, the program was analyzed by an independent Evaluation Committee comprised of dignitaries and researchers in the area of HSE, and supported by established organizations of the sector. The objective of WS+ is to create a culture of safety in the company through the DuPont consulting firm, which is internationally renowned for its expertise in the field. Its implementation at the shipyard started as a pilot project and, on conclusion in November 2012, it started became a model and is already being spread to other business areas of the Wilson Sons Group. “We are driven by challenges. This award is the result of a collective effort by our team. The shipyard has really undergone great changes”, says Wilson Sons Shipyards ‘executive director, Adalberto Souza. The results are significant. In just over a year and a half, there has been a 60% reduction in the frequency rate of lost time type accidents at the shipyard. “Before the implementation of the project, our own perception of a culture of safety was reactive, according to a study carried out in the unit. We are moving towards a stage of dependence, which showcases an actual change in behavior”, says João David Santos, Wilson Sons HSE corporate manager. Aléa Fizpan Steinle, Wilson Sons Group Organizational Development director says that the main issues the company seeks strengthening are the acknowledgement of all HSE responsibilities, discipline in the fulfillment of its rules, participation of management and the administration of deviations. “In a company which has almost 7 thousand workers, it is essential that all incorporate that culture, on a quest for interdependence in safety issues”, says the executive. According to Denise Grun, DuPont´s Sustainable Solutions director for South America, whilst the project was being designed, DuPont also proposed increased involvement of the company´s management in issues to do with HSE. “If management is not involved, it is not possible to carry out the necessary changes”. In her view, that differentiating feature is one of the main reasons for the project´s high level of involvement. “The company quickly perceives the advantages for the business, as HSE levels out the organization and productivity.” In 2012, WS+ was extended to four more businesses in the Group (Maritime Agency, Towage, Tecon Rio Grande and EADI Santo André). An HSE Executive Committee comprised of the company´s management was also created. The proposal is to implement the project in all of Wilson Sons units before the first semester of 2014. As for the Guarujá I shipyard, continuity of the project will be carried out through continuous monitoring and quarterly critical analysis cycles. . As well as WS+, the Wilson Sons Group invests in other programs to do with Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE). Two important examples which turned one year in 2012 were Brasco Commitment (Compromisso Brasco) and Você 100% (100% You). With the objective of preventing inappropriate use of alcohol and other substances in its units, the company implemented Você 100% in 2011, initially in Tecon Salvador, Brasco and Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore Units. In 2012, the company expanded the program to other businesses and units and has started to see results, as operations are less at risk. Another success story is the Compromisso Brasco, which aims at strengthening the culture of safety at Brasco even further. In September, when the program completed one year in functioning, the annual safety champions were rewarded, one of which was in the Niterói base and the other in Guaxindiba. . Historical Awareness Five years of Creating Bonds The Wilson Sons volunteer program started in 2007 In 2012, Creating Bonds, the Wilson Sons Group volunteer program completed five years in operations. However, the company´s commitment towards social responsibility started long before 2007. The first initiatives took place in 1994 with the creation of the Wilson Sons Social Actions Committee (CAWS), its main objectives being promoting actions and campaigns which were of use for the general public. During the course of the years, the actions carried out at the units throughout the country showcased a spontaneous adherence by collaborators to the social cause. They were on the front line in the fight in favor of poor children and adolescents in several Brazilian cities. In 2007, increasingly aware of the importance of volunteer actions, Wilson Sons launched Creating Bonds, a corporate program to organize and structure the actions already carried out. Also in October 2007, Creating Bonds implemented its first charity action through the project Crack in School - Crack in Soccer, which was carried out at the Jardim Catarina neigh- borhood, in São Gonçalo (RJ), in conjunction with the Viva São Gonçalo NGO. The objective of the project is to remove young people from marginality through sports and tutoring. Also in 2007, Wilson Sons partook, in conjunction with another 34 companies, institutes and foundations committed to volunteer work, of the founding of the Brazilian Corporate Council for Volunteer Work (CBVE). In November 2012 , as a culmination of the recent acknowledgement of the worth of the actions carried out by Creating Bonds, Wilson Sons - represented by its Tugboat, Offshore, Agency and Shipyards Vice President, Arnaldo Calbucci - was rewarded for its prominence in sustainability initiatives within the offshore naval industry. During these five years, Creating Bonds did not only contribute towards many children re-writing their futures, but also shaped the future of the Group, with hundreds of collaborators now united in favor of noble causes: the construction of a fairer society and a sustainable planet.
