Finalmente, The fifth edition of the Madeira Organ Festival takes place from 17 to 26 October. It being a festival of established quality in its programming, it is one more event in the annual calendar that enriches the cultural events of Autumn in Madeira and, very particularly, the cultural tourism sector and all the visitors who come to Madeira at this time. The Organ Festival was created five years ago as part of the “Madeira Cultural Festivals” project, being in a sense the end of a long process of restoration of the organ heritage of this Autonomous Region, a precious historical legacy of over twenty instruments from the Iberian, Italian and English schools of organ building, of which there still exist significant examples in the churches of Madeira. Over the course of the years, and subsequent to the making of the inventory and organological description, the restoration of a number of these instruments was methodically undertaken, with subsequent recording and publication of CDs with different repertoires chosen for each of the organ, according to a strategy that aimed at bringing them before a the widest possible public. This objective of safeguarding our heritage became more and more visible with the publication of the book Organs of the Churches of Madeira. Qualificar e diversificar a oferta cultural de qualidade é o grande objetivo do projeto “Festivais Culturais da Madeira”, desenvolvido pela Secretaria Regional da Cultura, Turismo e Transportes, e nesse desiderato o Festival de Órgão ocupa um papel de relevo, pela atratividade e intercâmbios que suscita e pelo público que já conquistou, promovendo o melhor da nossa identidade patrimonial e artística no mercado mais vasto do turismo cultural. plete process that began with the surveying and inventorying and continued to the exposure and enjoyment of this singular heritage, we have the creation and execution of a great Organ Festival, which seeks to enable the viewing in harmony of the various faces of Beauty, historically moulded in the art of space (architecture) and of time (music), here once more linked in the aesthetic enjoyment that only culture may provide. Throughout this journey of almost two decades, which runs from the restoration of old instruments to the building of the great organ newly created for the Church of the Colégio and the subsequent foundation of the Festival the restoration work of the master organ builder Dinarte Machado deserves special mention, and the contribution of the organist João Vaz by means of the artistic direction of the festival; both with a deep knowledge of the diversity and richness of our organ heritage, and who were present, always with great enthusiasm and professional sensitivity, the whole process that allows us th present today the fifth edition of the Organ Festival, with repertoires that will allow us to hear the best of the great masters of European music. Qualifying and diversifying culture of the highest quality is the great objective of the “Madeira Cultural Festivals” project, developed by the Regional Secretariat for Culture, Tourism and Transport, and in this desire the Organ Festival occupies an important role, through the attractiveness and interchange to which it gives rise, and through the audiences it has already gained, promoting the best of our identity, both as heritage and art, in the much vaster world of cultural tourism. The Madeira Organ Festival returns once again to the churches of the Region. Crowning an intense and continuing activity of restoration, publicizing and valuing of the organ heritage of Madeira, carried out over the course of more than a decade by the Regional Government of Madeira, this festival has established itself as one of the most significant of its kind. It has been one of the objectives of the Festival, since its first edition, to present programmes that allow the exploration of the multiple potentialities of the instruments of the Island. The 18th century organs of Portuguese origin, the organs imported from England in the 19th century and the recent organ of the Church of the Colégio have, during the last four years, been vehicles of the expression of varied repertoires, at the hands of many Portuguese and foreign organists. In this edition, the Church of the Colégio is the stage for two solo reticals by Pieter van Dijk and Joris Verdin, dedicated respectively to Johann Sebastian Bach and to Franco-Belgian music, while Iberian and Italian music from the 16th and 18th centuries is presented at the Church of Machico by the young organist Daniela Moreira. Paralelamente a estas manifestações, uma conferência de Rui Vieira Nery e uma visita a dois dos mais significativos órgãos do Funchal proporcionarão uma perspectiva diferente da música para órgão e do património organístico da Região Autónoma da Madeira. plores the fusion between organ and voice in the Churches of São Pedro (Funchal) and of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe (Porto da Cruz), with late 18th century peninsular repertoire, while the organ of the Church of Igreja de São Martinho is played by João Santos, together with the Classical Orchestra of Madeira under the direction of Norbert Gomes. The programme of João Paulo Janeiro and Paula Erra is an unusual combination of organ and literary recitation, at the Church of the Convento do Bom Jesus. The 5th Madeira Organ Festival closes with another novelty: the presence of the harmonium. Extremely popular throughout the second half of the 19th century, this instrument fell into almost total disuse throughout the 20th century, and has only really been rehabilitated very recently. Joris Verdin is one of the world’s specialists in the harmonium, and brings us a solo programme with voice (with the participation of Maria Ferreira), which will demonstrate the poetential of the instrument, so little known today. In parallel with these concerts, a lecture by Rui Vieira Nery and a guided visit to two of the most important organs of Funchal will furnish a different perspective on organ music, and of the organ heritage of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. A música francesa chegou a Weimar através de It was largely during his younger years that Johann Sebastian Bach’s career as an organist flourished. His first positions in Arnstadt, Mühlhausen and Weimar respectively gave him the opportunity to play regularly during services and concerts, and to compose many different works for the organ. The Weimar years (1708-1717) particularly were in that respect a very fruitful period. Although Bach never travelled any further than to Northern Germany, he was very well informed about the different musical styles in other countries such as Italy and France. Through his direct contacts to the great masters Johann Adam Reincken and Dietrich Buxtehude, he learned the compositional principles of Northern Germany. O segundo tema é completamente contrastante, começando no cimo do teclado, descendendo em saltos e tendo um forte perfil rítmico. such as the Livre d’Orgue of Nicolas de Grigny. The Concerti Grossi of Antonio Vivaldi were brought to Weimar by Prince Johann Ernst von Weimar who studied law in Utrecht and visited Amsterdam. The virtuoso Pièce d’orgue constitutes a unique example in Bach’s organ repertoire. The title and the tempo indications clearly show already French influence. The middle part, with its strong harmonic development, recalls the plein jeu. Growing pedal lines help to maintain the tension over a long period. In the third part, the descending pedal motive in semitones ends on a repeated organ point on D. The Orgelbüchlein is a collection of forty-six short choral preludes, based on hymns collected in the Weimar songbook. All preludes have an obligatory pedal part. Each chorale has a clear character in which key, musical motive and movement are in unique balance, expressing the text in relation to liturgical time. Bach required that an organist be a “multitasker” avant la lettre. In his six Trio Sonatas he expected the player to divide his personality into three independent parts: the two hands both imitate a violin while the feet perform the bass like a cello. The sonata originates from Italy and is strongly connected to the composer Arcangelo Corelli. The monumental Prelude and Fugue in B minor was composed in Leipzig at the end of Bach’s extremely productive life. The key of the piece and the expression of the musical motives suggest that this composition is related to theme of the Passion. Bach even fixed the registration above it: “pro Organo Pleno”, “for the full organ”. The Fugue is double, with two themes: the first is a stepwise motive in eight notes, without any specific rhythm. The second theme is greatly contrasting, beginning at the top of the keyboard, descending in leaps and having a string rhythmic profile. Alongside this evolution, the instrument’s cultural and social functions were also adapted to the needs of each time and geographical space. The association of the organ with the liturgy and the church building is undeniable, occurring from the 13th century onwards, moving from an exception to becoming its exclusive habitat. A primeira parte do programa é dedicada à estética barroca. De Elgar, compositor do reforms of later centuries, with their practical consequences for the liturgy, the instrument came to acquire characteristics related to its geographical origin. In Europe there were different families of organs, differing in their organological characteristics, so that one may distinguish instruments of Iberian, German, Italian and English origin, as is the case with the instrument used in this concert. The first part of the programme is dedicated to the baroque. Starting from French dance of strict metre, we will hear the first of the seven cantatas from the oratorio Membra Jesu nostri patientis sanctissima, written in 1680 by Buxtehude for 5-part choir. Considered the first Lutheran cantata, its texts are taken from the Old Testament and allude to seven different parts of the crucified body of Christ. From this volume of cantatas we shall hear that which refers to the feet (Ad pedes), in a keyboard reduction based on the version for chamber orchestra. The baroque keyboard repertoire, with the exception of works that require pedalboard, is Retrato de Jean-Philippe Rameau, atribuído a Joseph Aved. Whether as a solo instrument or basso continuo in the context of chamber music, there is a freedom available to the performer in the choice of instrument. There is naturally a different sensibility involved in their playing, given the organological differences between a plucked chordophone (the harpsichord) and the keyed aerophone (the organ) and the consequences of these differences, in that, in the latter, the organist may make the sound last as long as is desired. The Sonata for keyboard in C minor by Seixas, published in 1980 by Santiago Kastner in the Gulbenkian Fundation’s series Portugaliae Musica, bgins with a fugato for two voices on a theme of four notes incessantly repeated throughout its 45 bars, but which rapidly gives way to other melodic developments and a simple harmonic structure, alternating between the tonic and the dominant, with brief harmonic sequences. Moving to the second half of the programme, and following the bridge made between the Marian hymn composed by the organist João Vaz, we arrive at the English repertoire. We shall hear two organ pieces by the late romantic composer Elgar, contrasted in character, from his Vesper Voluntaries. Then, in more contemporary style, we hear Toccata in Seven, composed by John Rutter in 1974. Making use of a title comes from a genre of some five centuries’ history, frequently associated with keyboard virtuosity, the composer uses an irregular metre, in seven beats per bar, varying the distribution of the rhythmic groups (3-2-2 and 2-2-3), thus alternating the accentuation during the course of three sections of distinct characters. John Rutter is equally renowned for his innumerable sacred works for choir and organ, so traditional in English composition, of which we shall hear two of the best-known. Finally, and festively, we hear two works by Malcolm Archer, organist, conductor and teacher at Winchester. Throughout the final decades of the absolute monarchy in Portugal and up to the definitive establishment of the liberal regime, in 1834, innumerable travellers left, in their diaries, letters and memoirs, descriptions, sometimes of great richness, of the music of the liturgy celebrated in the churches and convents of Portugal and colonial Brazil. These include frequent references to the role of the organ in these services, rarely with detailed technical description of the specifications of the instruments, but often with very revealing reflections on their aesthetic and symbolic function in the liturgical context, their characteristic colorful sound, their varied repertoire and the standards, more or less impressive, of the performers. Desde a apropriação do repertório vocal por parte A programme that seeks to bring together music and literature can at the same time be a rewarding challenge and difficult to bring off in the context of a concert, especially when we are talking about a solo organ recital. However, taking into account the preparation of a programme dedicated to the oldest organ repertory, especially in terms of Portuguese and Iberian music, the connections between the art of making music and that of the literary gloss are extremely various, from the use • 26 • FESTIVAL DE ÓRGÃO DA MADEIRA dos tangedores de órgão, que se verifica nas colectâneas de música para tecla em que as intabulações de peças vocais predominam de modo esmagador, passando pelo duplo papel de poeta e músico que algumas figuras do humanismo ibérico souberam assumir, como Juan del Encina, Gil Vicente, Damião de Góis, entre outros. Do Cancioneiro Geral de Garcia de Resende publicado em Lisboa no ano de 1516, extraímos a famosa cantiga de Jorge Roiz de Castelo-Branco, mais recentemente difundida pela fadista Amália Rodrigues com música de Alain Oulman, mas que neste recital faz par com outra intabulação extraída da mais antiga colectânea impressa de música ibérica para tecla de Gonçalo de Baena. of vocal repertoire by organists, which may be seen in the collections of music in which intabulations of organ pieces predominate, to the double role of poet and musician that some of the figures of Iberian humanism took on, such as Juan del Encina, Gil Vicente and Damião de Góis. Thus, in an attempt to reflect to some extent this creative duality, this concert programme includes music and the “gaia scienza” of some authors, or the technical capacity and creative freedom of literature, unfold mutually, in parallel, in themes that may or may not be related, allowing dialogue between organist and recited text. Both music and literature are from the 15th and 16th centuries. They include different genres and forms in an attempt to illustrate some important examples of both disciplines, making occasional reference to significant moments in Portuguese history. We begin with a text by Juan del Encina which seeks to differentiate between creator and performer, separating them on Boetian lines – a polemic that would continue beyond the 16th century in various ways – and in parallel the hymn to St Bernard, Exultat celi curia. The chronicles of Santa Cruz from which comes the text entitled Dom Affonso e o Cardeal de Roma go back to the origins of Portugal and portray the founding ing as someone wild and irreverent, but concerned with the future of the country that he founded. Paired with this text is the intabulation for organ of a vocal work attributed to Gullaume Dufay, La Portugaler, found in the most famous keyboard anthology of the 15th century, the Buxheimer Orgelbuch. From the Cancioneiro Geral of Garcia de Resende published in Lisvon in 1516 we have taken the famous song by Jorge Roiz de Castelo-Branco, most recently sung by the fado singer Amália Rodrigues to music by Alain Oulman, but which in this recital pairs another intabulation from the oldest printed collection of Iberian music for keyboard by Gonçalo de Baena. Clamabat autem mulier by Pedro de Escobar, appeared in various collections of music for keyboard and plucked strings. Of Dom Manuel de Portugal, Count of Vimioso, it is known that he wrote above all mystical poetry, almost all in Spanish, but also a Treatise on Prayer in Portuguese. A nobleman concerned in the defence of patriotic ideals, according to some writers a kind of Portuguese Thomas More, he was a contemporary of the famous Carreira family of musicians, chapelmasters and composers of keyboard music who decisively affected the development of the Tento and its performance. The Sonnet by Dom Manuel is dedicated to the memory of another important Portuguese poet: Sá de Miranda. On 19 April 1506, an appalling event took place in Lisbon, the killing of all Jews and New Christians. Damião de Góis describes it in detailed fashion in his royal chronicle. Though it was not unique, this event was decisive in the exodus from Portugal of the Jewish community, the implications for the development of the history of the country. In parallel with this text we perform the Tento do 4.º Tom by Heliodoro de Paiva. To conclude this programme there is an excerpt from Gil Vicente, considered the cofounder of Iberian theatre, together with Juan del Encina. The excerpt is a speech by the Soul from the Auto da Alma, which curiously begins in the same way the Cântico Negro by José Régio, but which here makes his penitence asking for help after confronting his mixed nature, divine and erring, or emulating the ideas of Erasmus and the Roman Church. A melhora prova é o facto In the literature concerning organ music, the second half of the 18th century is generally described in terms of decay. The “Flemish School” was gradually dying out after the disappearance of Abraham Van den Kerckhoven. A parallel is often drawn with neighbouring countries, such as the decadence of the French classical organ and the decline of the “Bach tradition” in Germany. In the 18th century, organ building flourishing in Belgium, though the abundance of particularly valuable instruments on one hand, and the scarcity of published organ music on the other is a paradox in the history of Belgian organ music. The programme skips a large part of the 19th century, because the organ music of that time is very much connected with a certain organ specification which is in many respects different from that of the instrument you will hear tonight. In the 20th century, musicians rediscovered the music of the past, and organists especially tried to find inspiration in organs from before the French Revolution. Two ways of dealing with it are represented by Tournemire and Alain. His music is both expressive and well constructed, with influences from Italy and Spain, but in a very personal interpretation. Kerckhoven is the main personality in Belgian organ music in the 17th century. No works were published during his lifetime, but his compositions survive in many manuscripts. Codex un poco Faenza is clearly inspired by one of the most ancient sources of keyboard music. The Codex Faenza is a 14th century Italian manuscript that contains adaptations and ornamentations of both sacred and secular French and Italian vocal works of the Ars Nova. The organ used by the performers of the Codex Faenza consisted of the basic elements of an organ; a few registers and keys arranged according to pitch on a keyboard. Organists of the period had a simple instrument on which to play. When we hear such pieces today we are influenced by many other styles of music that prevent us from hearing this music of the past with the ears of six centuries ago. The Codex un poco Faenza is an expression of this helpless nostalgia. Joseph Hector Fiocco, of Italian descent, was active in Brussels and promoted the modern Italian style in Belgium, besides the classical French idiom. His pieces in general have French titles, but the style is Italian, with a lively melodic inspiration and an idiomatic keyboard treatment, including broken chords and scales. • 41 • MADEIRA ORGAN FESTIVAL mento idiomático do teclado, incluindo acordes quebradas e escalas. There is no single musical instrument with a history as clearly defined as that of the harmonium. Its existence is entirely linked to the musical idioms of the period 1830-1930. Towards the end of the 18th century, a new wave of developments began in the world of keyboard instruments as, throughout Europe, people sought new solutions to the increasingly problematic issue of combining sustained sounds with dynamic expression. Organ builders such as Sébastien Erard experimented with special stops, piano makers developed new forms of the pianoforte, while the harpsichord and clavichord gradually disappeared altogether. None of the instrument makers found a solution that combined practicality and compactness with an instrument able to be produced on a large scale, and was comparatively durable. Equally, the instrument makers failed to find a manner of making the organ, or pianoforte, truly ‘expressive’. Following various forms of the so-called ‘orgue expressif’, developed during the first decades of the 19th century, it was finally left to Alexandre François Debain to invent an instrument which would radically change the keyboard world. In 1842, he took out a patent on a keyboard instrument, which he called the “Harmonium”. In this manner, a keyboard instrument had been created which fulfilled the key desire of the time: a sound so supple as to make all variety of musical expression possible. The harmonium came into existence to fulfil the era’s desire for an expressive keyboard instrument and not as a replacement for the organ, although this was a role into which it was often pressed. This must be considered a somewhat remarkable phenomenon: the harmonium found itself in church due to such characteristics as stable tuning, limited size, a flexible sound with which to accompany a choir and also its limited need for maintenance. This programme presents a cross-section of original harmonium repertoire for the “salon” or concert together with sacred pieces for soloist and accompaniment. This instrument, with 1586 sounding pipes, is situated in a religious space with certain particularities. As a church typical of those belonging to Jesuit colleges, with a broad nave and quite a gentle acoustic, the organ had to be specially conceived, especially with regard to the measurements of the pipes. Thus all the pipework of the instrument has been specifically tailored to produce a full sound, and each stop produces a timbre with an individual personality, forming part of a harmonic ensemble based more on the sound of fundamentals and less on harmonics. It was also felt to be essential to give the instrument a certain ‘latin’ sonority that would favour performance of ancient music of the Italian, Spanish and Portuguese schools of the 17th and 18th centuries. Another aspect to be taken into consideration was the need to complement the current range of organs available locally: the new organ responds in an ideal fashion to the performance of works of periods and of technical and artistic requirements that none of the 24 historic instruments of Madeira cater adequately for. It also enhances the range of organs that constitute the island’s heritage by being present in this particular religious space, as well as by existing side by side with other historical instruments. In the decision to build it for this church, not only were the issues of acoustic, aesthetic and liturgical space taken into account, but also the presence there of an important historic instrument which is currently on the list of instruments undergoing restoration. • 66 • FESTIVAL DE ÓRGÃO DA MADEIRA FUNCHAL’S CATHEDRAL At Funchal Cathedral, the presence of an organ can be documented from the very beginning of the 16th century. In 1739 King João V gave the Cathedral a new organ made in Lisbon by the organ builder Francisco do Rego Matos. In 1740 the Chapter had this instrument placed in the original gallery, placed in a recess above the former sacristy, situated to the left of the sanc- tuary (Ferreira 1963: 18-19). No longer in working order, this organ was dismantled in 1925 and eleven years later given to the Igreja do Colégio. In its place the Cathedral Chapter decided to buy the organ that belonged at that time to the Anglican Church. The minutes of the Chapter meeting of 5 January 1937 mentions “that by order of His Most Illustrious and Most Reverend • 67 • MADEIRA ORGAN FESTIVAL • 68 • FESTIVAL DE ÓRGÃO DA MADEIRA Lord, the Bishop had bought the present organ belonging to the Anglican Church, the price of which was thirty-four contos and five hundred escudos (34,500 escudos), added to which the cost of transport, reassembly, etc.”, and that it was placed in the choir gallery at the main entrance of the Cathedral. This instrument, much altered since then, was built in England in 1884, having been ordered by an English doctor who resided in Madeira and also played the organ. At a certain point, this doctor had decided to give it to the Anglican Church. The organ had resulted from the collaboration of various builders, though T. A Samuel (Organ Builder, Montague Road, Dalston-London) was responsible in 1884 for assembly in situ. The pipes – or, rather, some of them – were made by the firm Charles S. Robson (1861), the windchests by Wilson Gunnerson, the manual by the firm S. W. Browne and some of the metal pipes were the work of the company A. Speneir (1884). Originally using tracker action, some thirty years ago the instrument was considerably altered, with changes made to the mechanism and the addition of a number of reed stops en chamade. These modifications have completely altered the organ’s character, without making any kind of improvement from a musical point of view. As a result of this, and with the intention of endowing the Cathedral with an instrument appropriate for liturgical purposes and for concert work, major restoration to the instrument was undertaken and completed in 1995/96 by Dinarte Machado. Em Agosto de 1904, no decurso de uma campanha de beneficiação do coro alto da igreja, a Fábrica aproveitou também a ocasião para The organ of the church of São Pedro was obtained in England from the firm Flight & Robson in the 19th century. We have no documentation relating to its construction but we may place it as before 1878, when the firm was bought by Gray & Davison. We know equally little of the exact date of the installation of the instrument in the church, but in two inventories (1838, 1841) there is reference to an organ “of which much use is made” placed in the choir gallery, which point to the present instrument (AHDF Inventário: 3). In the course of the 20th century, the organ underwent various repairs, as a result of which, among other things, the pitch and tuning were altered, without, however, causing any significant damage to the original state of the instrument. In August 1904, in the course of a campaign to make improvements to the choir gallery of the church, the Benefice took advantage of the • 72 • FESTIVAL DE ÓRGÃO DA MADEIRA mandar reparar o órgão, tendo sido responsável pelo restauro Alfredo Saturnino Lino. Em 2006, este instrumento foi restaurado por Dinarte Machado. opportunity to have the organ repaired, the restoration being undertaken by Alfredo Saturnino Lino. We know that the work to the organ, as to all the rest, took a short time, for in a note signed 6 August 1904, the builder stated that the work “should be finished by the middle of the present month” (AHDF Documentos). The works actually finished on 25 August; all told, the work to the choir gallery and organ cost 150,000 réis, to which the District General Council contributed the sum of 50,000 réis, given over entirely to the repairs to the organ. Apparently, this work was a one-off intervention, for only two years later, the newspaper Heraldo da Madeira, on 15 November 1906, reported that the organ of the church of São Pedro was once more under repair. With the extinction of the religious orders and the subsequent sale of the congregation’s goods, the organ was also put up for sale, being purchased by a certain Romano de Santa Clara, who kept it in a wing of the dissolved convent. In 1921 he gave it to the fraternity of Santa Clara, so that it could once more be put to service in the worship of the church. In October 1923 the task of “repairing” it was put in the hands of the musicians César R. Nascimento and Guilherme H. Lino, who completed the work in November of the following year. Unused and badly damaged for many years, this instrument of considerable historical value underwent a major restoration by Dinarte Machado on the basis of proper criteria drawn from a knowledge of the organ-building practices of the instrument’s period. This was completed in 2001. The poor state of the instrument, completely disfigured, required a rigorous, in-depth study on which to base this restoration. Thus we see how from the outset Dinarte Machado went to considerable pains in the course of this restoration. This small positive organ was built in 1781 by Leandro José da Cunha (b. 1743, d. after 1805), who was from Lisbon and was one of the three members identified as belonging to this family of organ builders. Leandro was the son of the builder João da Cunha (b. 1712, d.1762), also from Lisbon, who built the organ of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, at Ponta do Sol. It is an example of a type of instrument typical of Portuguese organs in the first half of the 18th century. The fact that the instrument did not originally possess a basic 8’ (12-palm) stop – like many other positives of the period – but only 4’ (6-palm), seems to indicate a musical practice that relied on reinforcement in the lower register through the use of another instrument. • 79 • MADEIRA ORGAN FESTIVAL CHURCH OF NOSSA SENHORA DA CONCEIÇÃO, MACHICO In the historical documentation from before the 20th century there are references to two instruments: according to historical tradition, one was given to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in 1499 by King Manuel, and another acquired in 1746. As regards the Manueline organ, we may deduce that it was placed within the archway above the choirstalls on the Gospel side of the sanctuary. In the 18th century, the state of this instrument must have left much to be desired, leading to the acquisition of the second instrument in 1746. The organ arrived in Madeira in 1752, with the Council of the Treasury initially contributing the cost of purchase and later the installation costs. The recent restoration undertaken by Dinarte Machado was done with the principal objective of returning as far as possible it to its original constitution, in accordance with indications to be gleened from the pieces of the instrument during its dismantling. Thus, the restoration always proceeded from a philosophy of taking into account the specificities of the original pieces, from the configuration of the case and its polychrome decoration, to the way the registration, pipiework, bellowswork and even its placement – in the sanctuary – were returned to how they were originally. As regards the composition of the stops, the split keyboard, with the reed stop in the right hand, which the organ indicated was an original feature, which indeed characterised the instrument. The original keyboard, which was found piled in a heap, and which it was possible to repair and reassemble retains the short octave, as was usual at this period. The new • 80 • FESTIVAL DE ÓRGÃO DA MADEIRA pipework was completed with great rigour in accordance with the characteristics of the few original pipes that had survived, compared with the actual indications and dimensions of the windchest, which was also studied and recorded in great detail. There can be no doubt that this is one of the loveliest organs on the island of Madeira. It is one of the instruments that conserves some of the most typical features of Portuguese organ building in the 17th century. It should be stressed that the restoration work carried out on this instrument required study of considerable documentation, as well as comparison with other instruments of the period. Since no other instruments of this kind are to be found in Portugal, recourse was had to instruments from other countries for the necessary data. • 82 • FESTIVAL DE ÓRGÃO DA MADEIRA CHURCH OF SÃO MARTINHO, FUNCHAL The oldest documental reference it has been possible to find concerning the existence of a pipe organ at the parish church of São Martinho goes back to 1806. According to a record set down by the treasurer of the Confraria de Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Fraternity of Our Lady of the Rosary), an organist was contracted in 1806 to tune the organ (ARM Confraria: 2), and there are other later records referring to maintenance work. In the record of expenditure for the year 1862, to be found in the Accounts Book (18341877), the vicar José Rodrigues de Almada noted down the sum of 200,000 réis for payment of the new organ, specifying that 150,000 réis were contributed by the Benefice of the church; 40,000 réis was credited from the amount paid for the old organ and 10,000 réis was donated, thus making up the real price of the instrument (ARM Fábrica 1834-1877: 27). From this source it has proved impossible to determine the conditions for its transport, or where it was acquired. What is certain is that in 1863 the organ was already in this church, for that year Father João G. de Noronha was contracted to tune the said instrument, receiving 2,000 réis for his work (ARM Fábrica 18341877: 28). With the transfer of the parish to the newly consecrated church in 1918, the organ was then taken there, where it continued to function until 1934. According to the records found in the Accounts Book (1877-1954), the organ underwent successive maintenance works, the most expensive being in 1879 (a payment of 38,000 réis to Nuno Rodrigues) and, especially, in 1916, because it was very out of tune and had a number of technical problems (ARM Fábrica 1877-1954: 22-25v). As an instrument to accompany and enhance divine worship, the organ of the church of São Martinho will have participated in various solemnities, and in the year 1917 there is a record in the Accounts Book of receipt of 10.700 réis “arising from the contribution of the organ to the festivities” (ARM Fábrica 1877-1954: 26).
