Os alunos puderam entender que um artista não se House Captains’ Breakfast The first House Captains’ breakfast was held on Tuesday, 31st August at 8.00 am. Our new Captains and Vice Captains got together with the Heads of House to make a plan for how to organise the house system throughout this academic year. Their first task was to split into their house groups and brainstorm what they thought were the qualities of another House. The whole idea of this activity was to show that although all Juniors are in different houses we are all together in one community. In addition, all the houses should respect and support each other in any situation. The first house event will take place on Friday, 10th September during Golden Time where the Year 6 pupils will begin the House Buddies with the Year 3 pupils. The next House Captains’ meeting will be held on Tuesday 14th September. We are looking forward to all the creative ideas and events that our new House and Vice Captains will come up with! MAD Friday On Friday 27th August, the MAD teachers organised the first MAD FRIDAY Podcast Radio Programme along with two artists in residence working live in the lunch area. Senior pupils and teachers could have a look at the work and ask questions whilst listening to songs composed by them, library announcements and a Fernando Pessoa poem. We would like to thank the following people for their wonderful participation: Tomohisa Takeda - Violin, Tiffany Bueno - F. Pessoa poem, Song 1 - Year 9 students, Song 2 - Leonard Herzog, Julieana Herweck, Mr. Haygarth - for promoting the event. Stay tuned for next MAD Friday on September 24th We are looking for volunteers (both teachers and students) for next month's Podcast Radio Programme! Please speak to any of the MAD teachers. In Kindergarten learning is fun! Last week kindergarten children explored patterns in a very different way. Children created their own pattern while making fruit kebab. It was delicious and a great learning experience for them all!! English - Descriptive Writing Year 9 have looked at descriptive writing and the different techniques you can use to enhance description. Each student was given a photograph and they had to write a descriptive piece inspired by the photograph. Calu Malta based her description on the photograph below: heated part of me was the beating heart against my ribs. It was the only proof that I had a heart, considering all the things I was forced to do. The horizon lay dead against the tall, lifeless buildings, giving me no hope whatsoever that maybe, just maybe, my future would be sunnier. Did I have a future? Or was this it? The cold wind slapped my face viciously. I looked up at the sky, in pure defiance, yelling in my head: ‘That’s all you got?’ As a response, it swiveled around me in chilling circles. I gave a shudder, but kept on dragging my feet through the deserted, lonesome path. Holding the gun awkwardly in my small, skinny arms, I made sure it was pointed far away from my face. If it faced me, it would stare with its unwavering single black eye, and mock me. I hated to feel that cold hand that squeezed my heart painfully whenever it was pointing at me. The gun is my worst enemy. My best friend, the one that defended and protected me. My only friend. The street smelled like defeat, and it burned in my nostrils. Trash littered it, and bugs were taking over. My feet were bare and raw against the freezing cold cement, and I could do nothing about it but bite down on my lip. The streets were completely wet, sleety and dirty, due to the strong rain, and the complete chaos this city was put through. My bright orange shirt was a pathetic contrast to what I was feeling right now. It was so cold that I couldn’t feel the wind nipping annoyingly at my skin anymore. I was utterly numb, and the only considerably There were abandoned food shops that surrounded me, crowded me into a small patch of darkness. I felt them hovering over my head, pressing me for answers: ‘Why did you do this? You helped to destroy this town! You’re a monster! You did this for no reason, am I right? Silently avoiding dwelling over all the horrific events I helped produce, I focused on the only sounds in this endless pathway: my shallow breathing. My quiet footsteps. My beating heart. Click. Crash. The loud, echoing sounds stopped me dead. My head snapped right, left, the gun was raised involuntarily and automatically by my own hands. It felt smooth and cold against my dead fingertips. I was clutching it so tightly to my chest it hurt; I could feel it against my screaming ribs. “Who’s there? Come out!” My voice shook at the last word. I couldn’t believe it was so small and child like. A woman stepped behind a fallen bin, her hair burning red against the black velvet that covered the sky. Her eyes shone like two blue jewels. She was covered by dirt and fear, a cloth trying to hide her away from her true beauty. She was probably one of the rare survivors of this massacre. “Hi,” she tempted. The lady’s voice was musical, and it made me wiggle sweetly inside. She gave a small cough as she saw my menacing gun. LANGUAGE CORNER Dedé Toffoli ? ? ? Name:_______________________________________ Year: _______________ “Could I get through?” The shame blazed inside of me. She was afraid of me? All I wanted was her to pull me into her arms and press me to her chest, so I could smell her perfume. So I could run my fingers through her silky hair. And she would tell me: ‘I love you. You are my child, my son. Nothing will ever touch you.’ That would never happen. Never would I have a mother. All I would have is this stupid gun and the empty cars that lay around me. “Ye-yes. Yes.” I lowered my weapon, hoping I would reveal a lonely child that was desperate for love, hoping it would be like a curtain – one that would strip me away from all the hate, from all the sadness, that would show what was behind it. A small boy. A child. A person. Before I knew it, she was gone, her presence ripped suddenly and rapidly from me. I was like an island in the vast, terrifyingly deep, blue sea. Blood splattered horribly against the pavement, and the heat that the woman had brought to me made me chilly all over again. The hatred that this town felt for me was everywhere: oozing out of the buildings, the streets, the emptied shops, even the litter. I was below everything. Anything was better than me. Me and this gun, all alone. Not even the abandoned cars were on my side anymore; even they were judging me. I smiled morbidly as I trudged on. The gun is my worst enemy. My best friend. My only friend. Student Council The school would like to congratulate this school year’s new members of the Student Council. They were recently elected to their posts by their peers to represent their respective classes for a duration of one term. Their first meeting was a lovely school breakfast followed by a brainstorming of activities for International Day of Peace (September 21). A cidade grande a fascinava. Devido à grande velocidade da evolução tecnológica, com o The Media’s Role in the Elections This term, the Year 6 pupils have been learning about decision making in their unit 'Governing for Global Harmony'. To help the pupils in their inquiry, Mr Saul Hudson came into school to share an informative, interactive learning experience on how the media influences how people make decisions, especially who to vote for in the upcoming elections. The pupils not only learned from the engaging activity, but also had a lot of fun! They also don’t produce much heat, an advantage in the summer months. Read the labels on your art supplies – are all the ingredients non-toxic? Chemicals like mercury, cadmium, and lead, which are dangerous to humans, especially children, and the environment, can be found in seemingly-safe arts and crafts supplies. Feed your child organic, healthy food; they will ingest much fewer chemicals that could be harmful during formative years. Consider making your own baby food instead of buying jars. Only buy toys that contain no PVCs, a type of plastic which could be harmful to both children and the environment. Consider natural wood toys (FSC-certified wood), or better yet, just play outside. Environmental Impact of Products – Consider the full lifecycle of the products being sold – how were the products made, what were they made of, where were they made, how will they be used and where will they end up? - Often the answers to these questions are not readily available in which case selling recycled products reduces the amount of uncertainty. We cannot expect children to eat a balanced and healthy diet when we actively promote unhealthy foods. Good eating habits come from home! Offering cake mix, beef jerky and popcorn does not adequately supply a child’s daily nutrition requirements. Consider foods that really encourage a healthy lifestyle like fruits and vegetables.
