The prevalence of substance use among Connecticut youth is greater than the prevalence in both the Northeast region of the country and nationwide. While the patterns of substance use and the factors contributing to use may vary, adolescent substance use and its consequences are a subject of concern in all Connecticut communities. A variety of resources exist in Connecticut communities that can help prevent substance use among youth. The University of Connecticut Health Center (UCHC), under contract with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, conducted a Community Resource Assessment from 1997-98 to identify substance abuse prevention resources available to youth in selected communities in Connecticut. The primary objective of the survey was to conduct a comprehensive inventory of the number, type, and availability of prevention services for youth. The survey can also be used to identify gaps in prevention programming relative to the needs of youth as measured through a school survey. New Britain was one of seven Connecticut communities randomly selected to participate in the Community Resource Survey. The INFOLINE Directory of Community Services was used to initially identify appropriate agencies. Persons familiar with substance abuse prevention services in New Britain then checked this list for completeness and accuracy. All agencies were contacted by UCHC research staff and asked to identify programs in their agencies that were available to youth. The directors of these programs were then mailed a questionnaire to obtain information about their program. For the purposes of this survey, a substance abuse prevention resource is defined as any service that addresses specific risk or protective factors for substance use among youth. Risk factors are conditions or situations that increase the likelihood of substance use and protective factors are those conditions that decrease its likelihood. School-based programs, as well as programs provided by church organizations, are not included in this resource list. This list contains program descriptions and contact information for resources available to youth in New Britain that address risk and protective factors. Risk and protective factors are categorized according to the domains, or areas of influence in a youth’s life, such as the individual/peer, family, school, and community domains. A checklist is used to indicate which programs address which risk and protective factor. The resource list also provides information on agencies that serve the town of New Britain, as well as statewide agencies that provide substance use prevention services for youth. We hope that you will find this information useful to your organization in contributing towards the prevention and reduction of substance use among youth in New Britain. 1 Programs available to youth in New Britain, Connecticut that address specific risk and protective factors for substance use Program Information Program Mission Artists Collective • 35 Clark Street, Hartford, CT 06120 • (860) 527-3205 Contact: Dollie McLean To promote the arts in education.
