St. Fidelis Mission Statement: The mission of St. Fidelis Parish is to provide a welcoming, Christ-centered environment, serving all who desire to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ by offering the Sacraments and Scriptures. We are committed to ministering to the needs of all, using our gifts and talents to serve the Body of Christ, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. JULY 29, 2012 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JESUS, “THE BREAD OF LIFE” In the Gospel reading for the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear the story of Jesus’ multiplication of the loaves and the fishes. This is one of the few miracle stories contained in all four New Testament Gospels. It clearly left a significant impact on the early Christian communities, since all four Evangelists include it in their Gospel narratives. In the Gospel of John, this miracle will begin a series of encounters that will lead to Jesus’ identity as “the bread of life”. During Year B of the church’s three-year liturgical cycle, the Gospel readings in ordinary time are taken from the Gospel of Mark. The one exception is a stretch of five Sundays (the Seventeenth to Twenty-first Sundays in Ordinary Time) where the Gospel reading is drawn from the Gospel of John. So, for the next five Sundays we will hear from the Gospel of John. The first reading is taken from the Second Book of Kings. The First and Second Book of Kings chronicles the activities of the kings, beginning in 961 BC with the final king of the United Monarchy (King Solomon), through the many kings of the divided northern kingdom of Israel and southern kingdom of Judah, concluding with the fall of Judah to the Babylonians in 587 BC. The two books also contain two large cycles of traditions on the prophetic figures of Elijah and Elisha (see, for example, 1 Kgs 17 – 19 and 2 Kgs 2 – 9). Today’s first reading is the story of Elisha’s miraculous multiplication of loaves. It is part of a series of miraculous activities by the prophet Elisha within this section of Second Kings. One of the main points of these miracles associated with both Elijah and Elisha is to authentic them as true prophets from the God of Israel among the many false prophets active in the divided kingdom at that time. The challenge of discerning true prophetic voices from false prophetic voices was a constant reality for the people of Israel. The Gospel reading narrating Jesus’ multiplication of the loaves and fishes bears some striking similarities to the first reading of Elisha’s multiplication of the loaves. For example, both Elisha and Jesus multiply barley loaves of bread. But in the case of Jesus, something more significant is happening than simply authenticating a true prophet sent from God. Jesus’ fourfold action of taking, blessing, breaking, and passing the loaves has clear Eucharistic overtones. This is significant, since there is no institution of the Eucharist in Jesus’ farewell discourse to the disciples in John’s Gospel (Jn 13 – 17). Moreover, the crowd’s reaction to Jesus (“This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world”) is an acknowledgement by the crowd of Jesus connection to Moses and the prophetic tradition that followed (see Dt 18:15 – 18; Mal 3:23). We continue to hear from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians for the second reading. In today’s reading, we hear Paul’s exhortation to the Christian community in the city of Ephesus to live moral and upright lives. Paul stresses the need “to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” Among the characteristics of a moral and upright Christian life, Paul cites humility, gentleness, and patience. When this is experienced among members of the community, there is experienced a “unity of the spirit” that speaks well to the fidelity of our call. As Catholic Christians, we experience this “unity of the spirit” in our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist. Prefigured in the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves by Elisha and Jesus, we celebrate our unity in Jesus Christ, “the bread of life.” Please pray for the souls of Ann Sasena and Arnold Totin who passed away recently. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed rest and rejoice in God’s kingdom of joy, peace and glory. Saint Vincent de Paul Food Drive is the first weekend of each month. Please place your non-perishable food items at the back of the church. In today’s Gospel, Phillip worried about “enough food” for the crowd. What is ENOUGH? When does our ENOUGH deprive another family of their fair share? Jesus performed today’s miracle because one child was willing to share and risk living with less. Can your family live more simply so that other families can simply live? The Benedictine Oblates will meet on Thursday, August 2nd at 7:00pm in the double classroom. The Diocese of Pittsburgh is once again planning its annual Golden Wedding Celebration for the couples who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. This year’s celebration will begin with Mass at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 21st at 2:30pm. Bishop Zubik will be the celebrant. A reception will follow in the lower hall at the Cathedral. If you are one of the couples celebrating your 50th anniversary in 2012, and would like to receive an invitation to this event, please call the rectory or drop a note in the collection basket no later than August 5, 2012. RCIA Inquiry Sessions: If you, a friend or family member have been coming to Mass for a while, and are not Catholic, or do not attend Mass, but are interested in possibly doing so, we would love to have the opportunity to join you in fellowship and invite you to learn what Catholics believe, within an informal and welcoming setting! This inquiry session is an opportunity for you to ask those perplexing and difficult questions and to hear some candid comments from Fr. Murphy, Joan Pilat and former RCIA candidates. Everyone is welcome at this session…you don’t have to be a non-Catholic to attend, enjoy and learn! Coffee, donuts and light refreshments will be served! Please join us on August 26, 2012 after the 10:30 Mass in the double classroom. Please RSVP by calling the parish office…and remember, “Each One Bring One”! Join the group who will be participating in a formation course for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Level II, which will be held August 13-18. This 2nd Level focuses on the history of salvation as presented in the bible and lived/celebrated in the Liturgy. Level I is grounded in relationship with the Good Shepherd, while Level II includes more specific moral formation what is my response to God's gift of Love. Take the full course or join us for at least one day. Level II certified catechists can guide sessions for children ages 6-9. Also, check out our blog: http://www.saintfidelisgu.org/ Family Faith Formation: The Process of Making New Disciples for the Lord We are in the process of revitalizing and broadening the faith formation aspect of parish life. We are doing this by strengthening the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program and introducing a lectionary-based system of gospel weeklies for the older children and youth. One major element of that revitalization is to staff the Faith Formation program with catechists, aides and other volunteers to support the work of witnessing to the Faith to our children and youth. There is a 2-way benefit for those in the work of catechesis: 1. You are, by your very presence, witnessing to the value of your relationship with Jesus, His Father and the Holy Spirit as you provide the youngsters the opportunity to see and absorb the riches of our Faith. 2. You also have your faith enriched as you grow into a deeper understanding of the fullness of the gospel message. Please contact Celine, Joan or Anna Marie in the Faith Formation Office to volunteer or to discover where and how you can be an instrument of the Lord for the good of the children and youth of the parish. There are catechist openings in the following levels: Sunday AM grades 3, 5 Sunday PM grades 6, 7 and 8 and the 2 months of the 9th grade Confirmation Prep. Monday PM grades 2, 5, 6 We need aides for all levels especially Sunday AM and Monday PM. THE HARVEST IS GREAT, BUT THE LABORERS ARE FEW! Be a part of the RCIA Hospitality Team It is a great joy when someone comes forward wanting to become Catholic. At that time we want to support and encourage everyone's journey through the RCIA process by being a welcoming presence, by giving them a forum for their questions and by providing education and spiritual formation opportunities. The parish staff handles the education and spiritual formation of the catechumens and candidates. But we really need help with the hospitality arm of the gatherings. Hospitality includes not only your welcoming presence, but also helping to provide simple refreshments, and another person who will recognize the catechumens and candidates outside of the Thursday evening setting. The commitment is most Thursday evenings from September through April. The pay-off is a renewal of your own faith and the pleasure of walking with others who sincerely desire to participate in the Catholic Tradition.
