Conference Programme 11th International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean Congress 26 to 30 September 2005 Lisbon, Portugal Map of IST Welcome INSTITUTO SUPERIOR TÉCNICO Unit of Marine IST Technology and Congress Engineering Centre The International Congress of International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean has nearly 27-year history since the first Congress of the International Maritime Association of East Mediterranean (IMAEM) held in Istanbul in 1978, and was progressively enlarged to other countries neighbouring the Mediterranean. Av. António José de Almeida Av. Alves Redol Av. Rovisco Pais I have the pleasure of welcoming you to participate in the 11th International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean Congress in Lisbon, Portugal, which will be held at Instituto Superior Técnico between 25 and 30 September 2005, dealing with many aspects of Maritime Transportation and Exploitation of Ocean and Coastal Resources. In 1990, the name of the association was changed to International Maritime Association of the Mediterranean (IMAM) and it has continued being an association of academic and professional institutions that aim to contribute to the efficient, economic and safe operation of ships, offshore and coastal structures and port infrastructures in order to promote the advancement of the use of the seas and coastal waters for a sustainable development of the societies. While previous Congresses were more concerned with ships and maritime transportation, the 2005 edition of the IMAM Conference, which has been organised by the Unit of Marine and Technology Engineering of IST, has widened the scope by including various topics related with the exploitation of ocean and coastal resources, an area that is believed to have become increasingly more important. The technical programme consists of more than 200 papers dealing with aspects of hydrodynamics, ship structures, machinery and propulsion systems, control systems, vessel design, shipyard technology maintenance and repair, marine environment, fisheries and aquaculture, maritime transportation and port operation, coastal and offshore development, safety and reliability, and design for the protection of the environment. I believe that we have brought together all the main ingredients for a successful and worthwhile Conference and I hope you all enjoy it! Av. Authors, who have not provided their presentations by e-mail in advance, should hand them to the Secretariat at the Congress venue on the day before the presentation is scheduled. Time Keeping Chairmen have the responsibility to introduce the speakers from the Bibliographic Notes available, to lead the discussions and to make sure that the time schedule is observed. It is suggested that Chairmen should show some tolerance for minor delays with the presentations and/or discussions but on the other hand they should be strict in not allowing major changes from the basis time schedule. As a rough guideline, a 5-minute drift in one of the presentations can be accommodated but more than that should be absolutely avoided in order not to penalise other authors and/or presentations. Overhead projectors will not be available. To avoid last minute problems of compatibility, authors cannot use their own laptop computers and need to deliver the presentation to the Secretariat beforehand. A staff member will be on hand to assist with any difficulty that may arise. Computer Area A designated area will be available with access to computers, where delegates will be able to check presentations and have access to the Internet. Internet Access Delegates will be provided access to the WIFI Network available on campus. For those who do not use this option, some computers will be available in the computer area with access to the Internet. Proceedings The papers presented at IMAM 2005 Conference will be included in the Proceedings to be published by Taylor & Francis (A.A. Balkema) in a two-volume set plus CD-ROM and included in each delegate’s registration pack which will be distributed at the Conference venue.
