This can be seen in the statistical summary of our promotional activities involving around 200 films displayed in the pages of this catalogue. This is an anniversary and a review that we wish to attach importance to and put into perspective through a series of activities that aim to show the role played by the Portuguese short films included in Agência’s catalogue throughout these 10 years in the establishment of Portuguese films both in Portugal and abroad. Thus, and besides our regular activities, in 2009, the Agência will pay special attention to the films which made its history, by increasing their circulation, in touring themed programmes that include the work that best represents Portuguese short films of the last decade, promoting their distribution in alternative circuits both in Portugal and abroad. We will also celebrate our anniversary by issuing a book of critical reviews of our most emblematic films to which we have invited a series of film professionals to contribute. We would also like to highlight the organisation of events which aim to examine and reflect upon Portuguese contemporary short film production and its role in the perceived profile of Portuguese cinema in Portugal and internationally. Besides this highlight, Agência will continue its normal work, as it has done over the last 10 years, of promoting Portuguese short films all over the world, based on a strong sense of public service where the dissemination of Portuguese culture is done through an extremely innovative and creative cinema genre, the short film. Agência has a very important role in the international projection of Portuguese short films through their promotion in festivals and other similar events and through the organisation of initiatives and special retrospective programmes. Our film catalogue shows the complexity and aesthetic amplitude as well as the range of different points of view of an entirely new generation of film directors, covering documentary, fiction, animation and experimental film. However, special projects and projects with different features such as video installation, concert ‑films and composite work coexist in the same catalogue, giving the Agência’s occupation a more comprehensive and multifaceted scope, thus including tendencies and currents that use short film in the production of new performance and multimedia content. The Agência’s work is focused on the promotion of the films included in our catalogue by entering them into film festivals and other events, for which we manage a print archive, and by participating in film markets, usually associated with film festivals, which aim to actively promote the distribution of Portuguese short films. We also take itinerant video stations to some festivals, which allow the viewing of our entire catalogue in digital format. These are privileged venues where promotional activities can be steered and done in an individual manner to reach TV channels, exhibitors and programmers. This work can often guarantee the future success of a film both artistically and financially. In addition, the Agência is also a distributor of films through organising special short film retrospective programmes (for itinerancy) which are shown in festivals, cinema clubs, city council initiatives and other exhibition venues, special programmes for target groups (such as young audiences) and the setting up of partnerships with other cultural entities, thus guaranteeing the public’s access to short films outside the exclusive context of festivals as well as an alternative distribution circuit to commercial venues. These totally human‑looking beings are intelligent and versatile – they’re capable of doing simple things like watering plants, laying the table, doing the laundry or feeding a pet. But that’s not all. These beings are almost autonomous and can even talk or interact with us. They have been designed to be more than a perfect appliance; they can cater to what the customer wants them to be – they can be mere home helpers or a children’s toy but they can also be sophisticated lovers or the perfect companion for lonesome people. Before being delivered to their customers, the manufacturer develops a kind of final quality control test, supervised by a technician, where certain skills (like learning the customer’s language) are improved. This part of the process invariably occurs in a closed environment, usually a house with key characteristics of the customers home. Alpha is one of such artificial beings. He and Beta are a couple only a few weeks away from being shipped to their future owners in Japan. His only company is Luisa, the cleaning lady, with whom he plays cat and mouse. To escape the sleep of reason – which creates monsters – Hugo exercises his lyrical vein by writing, with his friend Manuel, songs about their neighbourhood. The quiet dilettantism of our protagonist is shaken by Catarina, a young and beautiful translator who’s starting her professional life as a freelancer. Hugo is hooked and wavers. High above, a kestrel falcon hovers. It’s not the only bird of prey that can do it. 28 Cumpridas as obrigações académicas, Hugo passa os dias em casa descansando a cabeça de intermináveis leituras de autores pouco conhecidos. Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery opened in 2005 with the specific aim of highlighting this borderline territory of artistic creation which, on occasion, has had some difficulties in being seen on a regular basis at film festivals and even in contemporary art galleries. For some years now, Agência has reserved some space in its catalogue for those artists and works that are difficult to classify and present in traditional cinema venues of a more general nature. In this way, Agência aims to fulfil the need to provide a platform for displaying the work of artists who stand at the intersection between different fields. PEDRO MAIA Born in 1983. Somehow these private gestures caught on super‑8 film, repeated again and again in different families in different continents, enacted so that they can stage the act of family itself, all this has slipped away. Has the need passed? Is this what is being presented in Pedro Maia’s dirt encrusted projections? Here are elusive shadows, the delicate materials turning and strobing and shaking as if to emphasize the fragility of the look, the fragility of these family compacts have come apart at last, and in their dissolution, in the dying moments of their foreclosure and abandonment, these pictures have been left behind. They are unmoored, as stranded as their viewers. Lost. And let us not forget the materials. If the family has disappeared, if Maia’s Super‑8 Series marks the disappearance of a certain kind of family (could we name them the analog family? The ones who have not yet admitted the time bomb of the personal computer?) then its remains are equal parts family fragments and the messenger itself, the chemical base of the film, the scarred PEDRO MAIA See page 33 acetate no longer able to bear even a picture, only an impression of its passing. Who sees and who is seen? The video corrects the perspective leaving us alone with the Foly Bergeres servant: now we (contemporary spectator) are seduced by her gaze. It is a new unfinished Manet because not everything was corrected. In “Video killed the painting stars” #3 (Wall) (remake of Manet) the mirror effect is annulled and places us in the true spectators position, conscious of the “trick”. “Video killed the painting stars” starts with the idea that there is in us a destructive pulsion of the image, substantiated by several exemples through men history: since Jesus extruding the usurious of the temple, the lutheran iconoclash or the afghan buddhas explosion, to Mr. Bean effacing the Whistlers mother face. The author invested on a destructive and transformer pulsion and selected significative works of the visual cultural of our time. To get it, he used the classification of the several kinds of iconoclasts mentioned by Bruno Latour in “What is iconoclash? Or is there a world beyond the image wars?”. Thus we have classic iconoclasts who dont accept images as knowledge mediators and who consider essential their total erradication; others JOSÉ MAÇÃS DE CARVALHO Born in Anadia, Portugal in 1960. He made his studies in Modern Languages and Literatures, Coimbra University and a post‑graduation in Arts Management, Instituto de Estudos Europeus de Macau, in 1998. He works on photography since the early 90’s and started to work on video on 2000. During the period he lived in Macau, he was Invited Assistant at Instituto Politécnico de Macau and Pedagogical Coordinator of Educational Television. He curated the project “Topografias da Vinha e do Vinho”, a photographic mission about the Bairrada region, Cordoaria Nacional, Lisboa, and Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlim, 2002. Curated Museu do Vinho da Bairrada’s temporary and permanent exhibitions, Anadia, 2003. He also curated in 2005 “My Own Private Pictures”, Plataforma Revólver, in the scope of LisboaPhoto. He was nominated for the BESPhoto 2005 prize, CCB, Lisbon, January to March 2006. He has had exhibitions in several countries around the world such as Portugal, Macau, France, Spain, Holland, Slovakia or Brazil. believe we should not extract an image from the images torrent and isolate her; some attack or condemn images by their symbolic value to others and not for beying images; others simply destoy to build again, and others use challenge and irreverence to affirm their independence from the image. This project experimentation and investigation also conduced the author to create a new serial video called “Iconofilia” (of which are exhibited two) and which reflects not the common idea of image obcession but rather the veritable image persecution, the perfect image in search of objectivity and truth. Or is there a world beyond the image wars?”. 39 FRAME BY FRAME Frame by Frame was commissioned by Vila do Conde Shorts in 2006 for an exhibition at Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery. In my darkroom, the “Manufracture“, I develop films by using an archaic contact DREAMWORK printing process that emphasizes the specific, plastic qualities of film. Concretely speaking, 35mm film sequence in acrylic on light box I create without a camera, working directly (100x150x28cm) + DVD loop with the film strip and undertaking various physical manipulations. I use mainly “found” Sequência em película 35mm em acrílico sobre film footage as a starting point: Hollywood caixa de luz (100x150x28cm) + DVD loop movies, amateur films, diverse reel headers, etc... I primarily print the material frame by frame, using a notable variety of light sources: I use a cone of light emitted from an enlarger (L’Arrivée), the red beam of a laser‑pointer (Outer Space, Dream Work), and diverse miniature flashlights (Instructions for a Light and Sound Machine). The technically prescribed limitations of single film frames are often overstepped during this printing process. It is in these moments that what I would like to call “invisible cinema” is born: artistic elements of the film arise which can not be seen in the movie theatre. For one, the pictures fly by at 24 frames per second, thanks to the projector. And then there’s the immovable framing of the image, again as imposed by the projector which only reveals a certain portion of the 41 film strip. By examining unmoving pieces of celluloid, hidden structures created in the darkroom are revealed, making palpable the unique quality of the physical film strip as a specific, irreplaceable medium. The exhibition Frame by Frame hopes to unfold these invisible worlds and make them accessible to the eye. A exposição Frame by Frame pretende revelar estes mundos invisíveis e torná‑los acessíveis aos nossos olhos. FILM CONCERTS FILMES CONCERTO Several years ago, Curtas Metragens CRL started a new section in Curtas Vila do Conde and it has since then supported original projects in which music articulates with moving images by inviting musicians to compose sound tracks for a film or a sequence of silent films. Due to the great participation of audience in these projects, the Agência proposes to make valuable these partnerships between musicians and directors through film‑concerts and to promote them in places and events in 2009. The landscape has a majesty that serves to reflect the meditative interiority of the artist independent of any human presence. … New York is framed PETER HUTTON Peter Hutton is an experimental filmmaker born in Detroit, Michigan, USA, in 1944. He studied painting, sculpture and cinema at the San Francisco Art Institute. Hutton has made over twenty films, most of which are portraits of cities and landscapes from around the world. He uses a cinematic approach that is quite minimal and contemplative, filming silent tableaux (that are reminiscent of the first films made by the Lumière Brothers) almost always in black and white, with a 16mm camera mounted on a tripod. While the apparent lack of movement in many shots may initially evoke still photography, even the least active of Hutton’s images subtly evolve, creating a mysterious and haunting effect. The serene landscapes often contain a strong undertone of environmental disturbance that confronts our desire for imagery of pristine nature. He has been the director of the Film and Electronic Arts Program at Bard College in New York since 1985. Many of his films have been shown in institutions such as the Whitney Biennial in New York, the Museum of Modern Art of New York, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, the New York Film Festival and the Rotterdam Film Festival. in the dark nights of a lonely winter. The pulse of street life finds no role in NEW YORK PORTRAIT; the dense metropolitan population and imposing urban locale disappear before Hutton’s concern for the primal force of a universal presence. With an eye for the ordinary, Hutton can point his camera toward the clouds finding flocks of birds, or turn back to the simple objects around his apartment struggling to elicit a personal intuition from their presence. … Hutton finds a harmonious, if at times melancholy, rapport with the natural elements that retain their grace in spite of the city’s artificial environment. The city becomes a ghost town that the filmmaker transforms into a vehicle reflecting his personal mood. The last shot looks across a Brooklyn beach toward the skyline of Coney Island’s amusement park .The quiet park evokes the once frantic city smothered by winter. Nature continues its eternal cycles impervious to the presence of man, the aspirations of society, or the decay of the metropolis. 49 NEW YORK PORTRAIT: CHAPTER THREE Peter Hutton, 1990 DOC/EXP, 16mm, BW, 15’, EUA Hutton’s latest urban film, NEW YORK PORTRAIT III, takes on a unique tone in relation to Hutton’s ongoing exploration of rural landscape. The very fact that Hutton is dealing with older footage, with archives of memory more than immediacy, gives it a different texture than his earlier New York films, in spite of many continuities with them. Hutton always found the presence of nature in the city, not only in his many shots of sky and vegetation, but also in the geometry and texture of the city itself, which NEW YORK PORTRAIT: CHAPTER TWO seemed to project an independence from the human. This film seems to bathe itself in nostalgia for things human, as if Hutton Peter Hutton, 1980‑1981 were looking at a vanishing race. Again DOC/EXP, 16mm, BW, 16’, EUA humour rather than lamentation prevails, Hutton’s black and white haikus are an exquisite distillation of the cinematic eye. The limitations imposed – no color, no sound, no movement (except from a vehicle not directly propelled by the filmmaker), no direct cuts since the images are born and die in black – ironically entail an ultimate freedom of the imagination. … If pleasure can disturb, Hutton’s ploys emerge in full focus. These materializing then evaporating images don’t ignite, but conjure strains of fleeting panoramas of detached bemusement. More but never has it seemed that people were so contingent in Hutton’s films. The high angle of observation, frequent in Hutton’s previous New York films (and an invocation of their diaristic observer quality), here seems to carry a sense of withdrawal, a distance matched by compassion. … The final image in which a small shape against the scale of skyscraper and sky suddenly reveals itself as human by its motion seems emblematic, as does Hutton’s observations of the accidents and rescue of people below on the street. than mere photography, Hutton’s contained Última parte do tríptico dedicado à cidade ‑with‑in‑the‑frame juxtapositions are filmic de Nova Iorque, Hutton dedica‑se aqui à sua explorations of the benign and the tragic…. exploração do espaço rural, recorrendo a New York Portrait: Chapter Two é, como o próprio nome indica, a segunda parte do extenso retrato que Peter Hutton desenvolveu da cidade de Nova Iorque. BILDMEISTER Bildmeister is a Portuguese rock band. Travelling among sonic indie rock, they use intensity and instrumental noise as main weapons. Throughout the years they have created their own sound and instituted their creations as an identifiable mark. From sonic alien friends to old factories, from low quality digital schematics to loud landscapes, they insist to pursuit the same path as always, making things as desired and as engineers of sonic rock. The catalogue of films available through Filmbox has around 100 titles taken from the works represented by Agência and is an important collection of recent Portuguese short films. The opportunity to access technical and artistic information, and watch short films in digital format, all via Agência’s website, makes the research process much more efficient and comprehensive for programmers, exhibitors and plain enthusiasts. Further to the launching at Clermont‑Ferrand, throughout 2007, Filmbox was at Mercado Internacional de Curtametraxes, part of Curtocircuito IV, Santiago de Compostela International Short Film Festival. It also took part in several Portuguese festivals including Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival, Ovarvídeo – Ovar Video Festival, Imago – International Young Film and Video Festival, Fantasporto – Oporto International Film Festival and Cinanima – International Animation Film Festival with excellent response. Filmbox provides an alternative to traditional circuits in accessing Portuguese short film production while promoting new talent as well and encouraging and building up new audiences. The consolidation of the project in 2008 was based on returning to the same festivals thus becoming a regular feature at the main Portuguese film events, and internationally, taking into account the relevance of Clermont‑Ferrand Film Market and the geographic proximity of Curtocircuito in Santiago de Compostela. In addition, the improvement in the contents available for research (namely, statistics on the films’ trajectories throughout the years) allows for a more thorough assessment of Portuguese short films’ acceptance and importance in Portugal and abroad. The potential for widening the range of initiatives that Filmbox can attend and the will to do so is quite big, thus the project’s future is linked to exploring new venues and audiences outside festivals and film events so that this type of promotion of short films may lead to a bigger and better understanding of the diversity and quality of Portuguese short film production. An analysis of these 10 years shows not only continued, sustained growth in activity but also an increasing positive return on the work carried out. It has been a period of building and defining the Agência’s current profile which is based on a blueprint that is as close to that of a organisations with the aim of putting together special retrospective programmes dedicated to Portuguese short films. Thus, the collaboration with several Portuguese institutions with a strong international presence as far as Portuguese culture is concerned, were very important for leveraging Agência’s work. The study of the data presented here shows the increasing programmer as it is of a distributor of Portuguese short films. number of films represented by the Agência (98 in 2008) which Initially, Agência’s work dealt mostly with entering the films festivals from a total of around two hundred short films that in our catalogue into film festivals, although occasionally it organised innovative and high impact distribution initiatives such as Shorts Generation – 10 years of short films in Portugal (2000) and Tales of Two Cities (included in the programme for Oporto and Rotterdam European Capitals of Culture (2001). Later, the Agência widened its scope and started developing new projects such as the film “Dinamite Never Land” (a compilation of 4 short films by Sandro Aguilar and Miguel Gomes) in 2003, and more recently, Other Stories: Education Through Image, Filmbox and Special Programmes which target younger audiences. Our efforts have ensured the regular participation of Portuguese short films in leading festivals and markets and have allowed us to include new forms of expression such as video installations and film‑concerts in our catalogue. The widening of our scope of activities implied a change in our main focus which had been entering our films into short film festivals (over 10.000 entries in 10 years). The shift in focus made us also prioritise contacts with festivals and similar events, partners and other cultural 70 were included in programming initiatives and entered in make up our catalogue. The current situation can be explained by the following factors: an increase in short film production in Portugal, the increasing quality of Portuguese films and, linked to this although not exclusively, the regular presence of Portuguese films in festivals and similar events. The initiatives carried out by Agência over the years and the fact that it has become an easily identifiable well‑positioned voice have definitely contributed to the international consolidation of the eclectic profile and the quality of Portuguese short films. The change in Agência’s scope in 2007 and 2008 can also be seen, and justified, by the results obtained: direct programming allows a bigger and more effective international presence of Portuguese short films; it allows a continued distribution of films whose competitive trajectory had finished due to festivals’ regulations. We would highlight again the growing acceptance of Portuguese short films in festivals and film events which TOP 10 SHORT FILMS (selections in festivals and other film events) HISTÓRIA TRÁGICA COM FINAL FELIZ 163 A SUSPEITA 116 ABRAÇO DO VENTO 102 CLANDESTINO 98 A NOITE 80 STUART 73 RAPACE 60 A DAMA DA LAPA 58 CÂNDIDO 54 A DROGARIA 52 0 50 100 is a consequence of the excellent quality of the Agência’s catalogue with recent films such as “História Trágica com um Final Feliz” (Tragic Story With Happy Ending, 2005) by Regina Pessoa, “Rapace” (Bird of Prey, 2006) by João Nicolau and “Cândido” (Candid, 2007) by Zepe, and from the early years,“A Suspeita” (The Suspect, 1999) by José Miguel Ribeiro, “A Noite” (The Night, 1999) by Regina Pessoa and “Clandestino” (Stowaway, 2000) by Abi Feijó. The ten most important films in Agência’s catalogue, which represent around 30% of the total of entries in festivals, cover the whole period analysed here which shows that there has been a regular flow of Portuguese production with a special highlight on animation, whose reputation abroad (“A Suspeita” Cartoon d’Or in 2000 and “História Trágica com Final Feliz” Grand Prix at Annecy in 2006) have resulted in an increase in co‑productions for producing Portuguese animation (such as the last short by Regina Pessoa and 150 200 acceptance in countries such as France and Spain with around 25% of the total and, in general, in western Europe. Brazil, by the same token, but with bigger cultural and historic affinities, has also a prominent place as far as the affirmation of Portuguese films abroad is concerned. By contrast, indeed at some distance from Portugal culturally and otherwise, there is China, with its increasing cultural energy and openness, which features in the top 10 of countries where our films have been distributed. 2009, with the prominence that our tenth anniversary grants, has particular relevance in the affirmation of Agência’s role as a programmer and to prove it we are highlighting the initiatives associated with the touring retrospective of the films most representative of the Agência’s trajectory in this first decade of activity. “Passeio de Domingo” by José Miguel Ribeiro). Another important fact is the emergence of a new generation of young directors whose profile integrates an array of new technical and artistic trends which are clearly seen in recent work such as the already mentioned “Rapace” by João Nicolau, and “Cândido” by Zepe, and also “Corrente” (Flow) by Rodrigo Areias, “Alpha” by Miguel Fonseca, “Fim‑de ‑Semana” (Weekend) and “Um Dia Frio” (Cold Day), both by Cláudia Varejão, “Outside” by Sérgio Cruz and “3x3” by Nuno Rocha. The relevance of cultural proximity becomes quite patent in the geographical distribution of the Portuguese short film participation in festivals and other events.
