Fernando Thebaldi, Viola [email protected] Long before earning his Master degree from the Royal Conservatories of Haia, Rotterdam, and Tilburg, Fernando Thebaldi began experimenting with music through a piano at the home of his family, who belonged to one of the first waves of Italian immigrants to the state of Espírito Santo in Brazil. Motivated by his mother, he began studying piano when he was nine years, and soon showed an interest in chamber music. When he was fifteen years old, attending a concert of the Filarmônica Capixaba, he heard the viola for the first time and immediately fell in love with the sound of the instrument. Later, when he discovered a recording of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with Pinchas Zukerman, Fernando began to devote himself exclusively to the viola. In 1984 he moved to Rio de Janeiro and began his undergraduate studies at UNIRIO under the guidance of MarieChristine Springuel, a master and mentor who had an influence on Fernando’s life similar to that of Gisella Bergman, later in Holland. Fernando Thebaldi has performed as soloist and chamber musician in Brazil and in several other countries, including Belgium, Italy, Saint Maarten Island, Paraguay, and the U.S. He lived in Holland for ten years, where he earned a master degree, performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with the Artemis Ensemble, and integrated the orchestras Randstedelijk Begeleidings, Adamello Ensemble, Brabants Kamerorkest, Laurens Bach Orkest, and Dordts Kamerorkest. He has participated in master classes with Bruno Giuranna, Gregor Horsch, and Siegfried Führlinger, and performed as a soloist with the symphony orchestras of the Rotterdam Conservatory, the Nacional da UFF, Orquestra Jovem do Rio de Janeiro, Filarmônica do Espírito Santo, and chamber ensembles such as the Ars Musica of Rotterdam, the Municipal de Asunción, and the Camerata Rio. He was a teacher at the Faculdade de Música do Espírito Santo for four years, and has given workshops on the viola in festivals such as the Festival de Inverno Domingos Martins, the Festival de Música Antiga de Juiz de Fora, Villa-Lobos Chamber Music Festival and the FEMUSICA in Campos dos Goytacazes. With the Quarteto Radamés Gnatalli, he has taken part in critically acclaimed chamber music concerts in the USA, Germany, Switzerland, and South Africa, in addition to tours of the Brazilian states of Acre, Piauí, and Mato Grosso, where the Quarteto has performed VillaLobos’s Guia Prático. In his free time, Fernando Thebaldi is a devotee of bodybuilding . Skiing, and diving are parts of his favourite hobbies, as well as cooking with his friends and spending time with his family, thus dividing his time between music and the other pleasures of life.
