Duzentos quilómetros a Norte do Círculo Polar Árctico,
encontramos luxo em forma de gelo. Cartão de visita
de Jukkasjärvi, uma pequena vila na Lapónia sueca, o Ice
Hotel é o primeiro hotel do mundo feito de gelo e neve.

Two hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, we came
across a unique luxury in the form of ice. The calling card
of the small Swedish Lapland village Jukkasjärvi, the Ice
Hotel is the first hotel worldwide built from ice and snow.

Criado em 1989 por Yngve Bergqvist, há 24 Invernos que o
Ice Hotel convida a experimentar as temperaturas negativas,
entre luxuosas paredes glaciares. O primeiro bloco de gelo foi
colocado sobre o congelado rio Torne, para edificar uma galeria de arte em forma de igloo.
A técnica de construção foi sendo aperfeiçoada e o interior da
estrutura gélida foi aumentado para envolver um bar de gelo, e
receber os primeiros convidados a passar uma noite de sono
abaixo de zero. E as reacções quentes a esta experiência deram origem ao hotel mais frio do mundo.
De arquitectura efémera, o Ice Hotel é reconstruído todos os
anos. Com o frio árctico de Outubro, chegam os primeiros blocos de gelo, vindos do já referido rio gelado, que reedificam o
espaço para estar pronto em Dezembro – data em que o hotel abre portas, preparando-se para receber 50 mil visitantes,
ao longo de quatro frios meses.
Sob o seu tecto glaciar, encontramos duas luxuosas acomodações. Abaixo de zero, temos a acomodação fria, com 65 quartos de gelo (concretamente a 5 graus negativos, a temperatura dentro do quarto), mais um espaço de sauna e uma área
de relaxamento. Os clientes que se atreverem a passar uma
noite na companhia de temperaturas negativas, são recebidos
com vestuário quente e sumo cálido de sabugueiro. Já nos
bungalows da acomodação quente, a temperatura ambiente
é mais convidativa, estando o gelo apenas do outro lado da

Built in 1989 by Yngve Bergqvist, the Ice Hotel has been
inviting guests to experience negative temperatures, in
the shelter of luxurious glacial walls. The very first block of ice was placed over the frozen waters of the Torne
River to build an igloo-shaped art gallery.
The building technology has improved over time. The inside of the icy structure has now expanded to include an
ice bar and to provide rooms for guests wanting to spend a
night sleeping under zero degrees. The enthusiastic reactions led to the coldest hotel in the world.
Due to its ephemeral construction, the Ice Hotel is rebuilt
each year. The first blocks of ice arrive every October,
brought from the Torne River, mentioned above. By December, the reconstruction is finished and the hotel opens
its doors to 50,000 visitors per year throughout the four
months of the season.
The glacial roof guards sumptuous accommodations. Below zero, the rooms are cold. There are 65 ice rooms (with
temperatures around minus 5 degrees Celsius, inside) as
well as sauna and lounge. Those guests who are ready
to brave the cold are met with special warm clothes and
a warm drink of lingonberry juice.
The heated bungalows outside the hotel are more comfortable, with the ice merely standing guard outside the door.
There are 72 heated rooms. There are four restaurants,

porta. Estão disponíveis 72 desses quartos com aquecimento. À
disposição, estão também quatro restaurantes, com opções gastronómicas entre o tradicional, o gourmet e o Ice Menu – servido
em cristalinos pratos feitos, evidentemente, de gelo. Os mais sedentos podem sempre visitar o Ice Bar, seja para beber champanhe numa taça de gelo ou dançar numa pista de neve.
Sendo o Ice Hotel um projecto movido a criatividade, todos os
anos dezenas de artistas internacionais são convidados a inspirar-se no gelo para desenhar e esculpir o interior de várias divisões da acomodação fria. Este ano, o hotel surpreende-nos com

uma suite que convida a dormir dentro de uma carruagem de gelo,
esculpida à semelhança do icónico metro de Londres. Outra surpresa é a suite MINI Evolution – criada por Peter Koerbler, em parceria com a MINI – cujas paredes contam a história da evolução
da marca. Destaca-se, também, a arte de língua portuguesa presente no lobby, cujo interior foi esculpido pelo artista brasileiro
Speto. ‘Todo Mundo’ é o nome deste projecto de design, inspirado
no futebol e no Mundial de 2014, que tem o Brasil como anfitrião.
O Ice Hotel está à sua espera até Abril. Depois, as portas fecham-se e este sonho de luxo derrete. Até ao próximo Inverno.

with a range of menus from traditional to gourmet and
including an Ice Menu – served in ice crystal dishes. The
more sedentary guests can always enjoy a tipple of champagne from a glass made of ice or dance on a snow slope.
Since the Ice Hotel is a creative project, every year dozens of international artists are invited to design and to
help sculpt the interior of several of the hotel’s rooms.
The surprise this year was a suite that invited guests
to sleep in a carriage made of ice, sculpted to resemble
the London Underground. Another surprise is the luxu-
rious MINI Evolution suite – designed by Peter Kroeber,
in conjunction with MINI – whose walls tell the story of
the British automaker.
It is also worth mentioning the Portuguese language art in
the hotel lobby. Its interior was sculpted by Brazilian artist
Speto. ‘All the World’ is the name of the project inspired
by the 2014 World Cup to be hosted by Brazil.
The Ice Hotel will be waiting for you until April and then
the doors will close and the walls of this gem of a hotel
will be allowed to melt. Until, that is, next winter.
