FOREWORD
The first Congress RCANS (Regional Committee on Atlantic Neogene Stratigraphy
(lUGS, UNESCO) / Atlantic General Events during Neogene was held in Lisbon, October 12-
15, 1992. It was organized by a Committee (General Secretary, Miguel Telies Antunes;
Executive Secretary, Jotio Pais) composed of members of the then "Centro de Estratigrafia e
Paleobiologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa".
During this Congress, a new RCANS Direction was elected: M. T. Antunes
(President),]. Civis / Univ. de Salamanca, Spain and V. Padron / Escuela superior de
Geologfa, Minas y Geofisica, Caracas, Venezuela (Vice-Presidents), J. Pais and B. Cahuzac /
Univ. Bordeux, France (Secretaries).
One of the main aims of the Congress was to dinamize studies about the Atlantic
Neogene and its relationships with Mediterranean and other areas. This led us to produce an
Abstracts volume (on Boundaries and Correlations; Geodynamic evolution; Biodynamics;
General events) (122 p.), a "Ciencias da Terra (UNL), Numero Especial", a Special Volume
which is primarily an Excursions Guide but containing syntheses about Neogene: in Portugal,
in some regions in Spain; and in Morocco (121 p.).
Nevertheless, the need of a better Iawwledge ofAtlantic Neogene researchers and their
working fields was felt. In order to fulfill this need, we (July 1993) edited "Researchers
Adress, Fields ofInterest / Bibliography List" (55 p.) containing the available data at the time.
Furthermore, we difused a circular letter asking for additional data. This allowed us to edit the
present volume.
We hope that this enlarged and updated version will meet our goal in helping and
establishing connections among researchers interested in Atlantic Neogene. We hope therefore
that our contribution will be useful for the reinforcement of closer scientific ties and
development of new iniciatives - specially as far as Working groups are concerned
March,1995

Special concern is given to palaeoecological and palaeocenographic interpretations based on Nannofossils,
particularly in their role as froxy of Global events related to climate or/and Ocean circulation pattern changes.

3 major research areas: 1) Miocene phosphorite deposits of the Florida Platfonn; 2) Cenozoic sediments from the New
Jersey margin (ODP Leg 150); and 3) Miocene Monterey Fonnation, south-central California. 1) Origin and age of
largely reworked phosphorite deposits in Florida. Relation of phosphogenesis to sea level and global C and P cycles.
2) Origin of diagenetic carbonate minerals and glaucony. Correlation of glaucony to sea-level fluctuations and
phosphorites of similar age from the southastern D.S.A. 3) Correlation of volcanic ash layers throughout the
south-central coastal exposures of the Miocene Montery Fonnation. Evaluating the progressive alteration of vitrous
ash to smectitic clay minerals.
Further remarks:
The advent of Sr isotope stratigraphy has revolutionized our ability to resolve complex depositional packages of the
continental margin of the southeast D.S.A. we are in the process of assembling a working group involved with
unraveling the Neogene stratigraphy of Eastern D.S.A. continental margin integrating litho., bio. and isotope

and by deep water characteristics. 2 - the variations of deep-water benthic foram faunas in cores from the Quaternary as
well as from the entire Cenozoic trace variations in ocean productivity and of changes in the deep water circulation. 3 The benthic faunas of the eastern and western North Atlantic basins have followed a generally similar (but distinct
detail) history. 4 - benthic foraminifers lend themselves to a low-resolution biostratigraphy.

Main research
results/research in progress:
A biostratigraphic zonation in the pampean area (central-eastern Argentina) is proposed. The biozonation include 10
biozones for the continental Upper Cenozoic of the pampean area. In addition, the mammals are used as indicators of
climatic changes in the same area. Are verified important faunal turnovers related to global changes.

Main research
results/research in progress:
Wold (1992) Through analysis of the Cenozoic sediment mass/age distribution and the change in area of sea floor for
the northern North Atlantic (Charlie-Gibbs to Jan Mayen FZ) through time, it can be concluded that there is a deficit of
Oligocene to Miocene sediment in the region. The mass of Pliocene to quaternary sediment is much larger than that of
the older sediment and may have been derived primarily through the erosion of Eocene and Oligocene sediment by
deep-water currents.
The sediment drift-portion of the total regional sediment mass, increased significantly 3 times during the Cenozoic.
Each of these drift-growth phases, lasted between 3 and 4 m.y. The first two growth phases, from the Late Eocene to
Early Oligocene and from the Early to Middle Miocene, were accompanied by northward-shifts of depocenters to the
newly-fonning sediment drifts. The third and largest growth phase occurred between 7 and 3 Ma, and may have been
preceded by the initiation of accumulation on Eirik Drift, 8-7 Ma.
A computer program combining backstripping with plate tectonics was developed to reconstruct the paleobathymetry
of the region between the Charlie Gibbs and Jan Mayen Fracture Zones from the East.
Greenland margin to the European shelf for the past 50 m.y. These reconstructions were first to combine a
backs tripping model including decompaction of sediment with a gridded plate tectonic model.
Quantitative methods to predict the formation of evaporites, bauxites and coal, using the results of GCM simulations
are being developed by Wold, Pollard, Schulz, and Hay at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (Boulder,
Colorado). Wold plans to compile a database of presently exposed c1imate-senesitive sediments and use observed
climate data and GCM simulation results to develop validation techniques for paleoc1imate models. We will then test
these techniques to determine whether it is possible to accurately predict the sites of deposition of climatically
controlled sedimentary deposits in the Cretaceous.
