The modulation by potassium of the transport of 137Cs+ by microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Corisco JAG, Linares-Rueda A, Burbidge C, Fernández-García, JA (artigo em preparação para submissão). 137 + Abstract: Uptake rate (v0), concentration factor (CF) and efflux rate of Cs in green algae Chlammydomonas reinhardtii (Chlorophyceae) depend on the external concentration of + + potassium ([K ]ext). In a low micromolar range, 1 – 50 mM [K ]ext, v0 and CF dependencies are 137 + -1 -1 non-lineal with a significant decrease in v0 from 21 to 5 pmol Cs mLcell volume h , and in CF + + from 48388 to 4568, when [K ]ext was changed from 1 to 5 µM, respectively. With a [K ]ext 137 + -1 -1 range 0,1 mM – 10 mM, v0 stayed inferior to 1 pmol Cs mLcell volume h , and CF under 500. 137 + 137 + -1 -1 + Efflux rate of Cs stays inferior to 1 pmol Cs mLcell volume h with [K ]ext < 0,1 mM and + 137 + -1 -1 + increases significantly with [K ]ext ≥ 0,1 mM up to 15 pmol Cs mlcell volume h . With K + + deficient cells ([K ]ext = 0,1mM) uptake kinetics of Cs is saturable, with affinity constant kM =9,8 + + -1 -1 + µM Cs , and Vmax = 4,7 µmol Cs mLcell volume h . With K sufficient cells, uptake kinetics is lineal. + Addition of 0,1 mM cyanide (CN ), an inhibitor of the proton pump (H -ATPase) of plant cell + membrane, reduces the accumulation of the radioisotope by K deficient cells, evidencing the 137 + energy requirement of Cs transport in such conditions, which is compatible with the functioning of a saturable transporter depending on a proton gradient. Addition of 0,1 mM + + 137 + + tetraethylammonium (TEA ), a K channel blocker, causes a decrease in Cs uptake rate of K deficient cells, indicating that along with an energy requiring transport system, there is also 137 + functioning a less significant diffusive component of Cs transport. Quantifying the natural background radioactivity in emergent plants and hydrophytes from river Tejo. Corisco, JAG, Madruga, MJM, Capucho M, Santos MG, Silva L (artigo em preparação para submissão). Abstract: The capacity of plants to absorb bioavailable radionuclides in nature can be used as a way to evaluate consistently the presence of radionuclides in riverine ecosystems, using emergent plants and rooted or floating hydrophytes as bioindicators. A monthly sampling 1/1campaign started in October 2013 at the locations of Vila Velha de Ródão and Belver in the basin of river Tejo. Sample analysis was made by gamma spectrometry with a HPGe detector, producing new reference data on the concentrations of some elements of the natural decay series of uranium 238 and thorium 232. Emergent plant Cyperus eragrostis, and submersed hydrophyte Potamogeton pectinatus (sago pondweed) were predominant and perennial species at the Vila Velha de Ródão sampling point, whereas the hydrophytes Ceratophyllum demersum (coontail) and Myriophyllum spicatum (water milfoil) occurred scarcely at the Belver 226 -1 228 sampling point. P. pectinatus had the highest levels of Ra (128±52 Bq kg , dry), and Ra -1 210 -1 (80±24 Bq kg , dry). Root system of C. eragrostis had the highest levels of Pb (38±25 Bq kg , dry). In single samples of M. spicatum (root system and stems) and C. demersum, revealed 210 226 228 detectable concentrations of Pb, Ra and Ra. It has been demonstrated the benefits of using the components of the Tejo aquatic vegetation as bioindicators of the natural background radioactivity, using gamma spectrometry as an analysis tool, once surface waters and underwater sediments hardly produce data above the detection limits.
