CARCASSONNE
THE "CITÉ"
Information
1
The "Cité" of Carcassonne (3rd – 14th centuries) is the largest medieval site in Europe on the UNESCO World Heritage
list. Built over the ruins of a roman fortress, the "Cité" of Carcassonne became famous during the crusades
against the heretics, when the city was one of the headquarters of Occitan Cathars.
In August 1209 the crusading army of Simon de Montfort forced its citizens to surrender. Nowadays, behind
the walls composed by a double ring of ramparts and 52 towers and barbicans, the castle sits overlooking the
surrounding area. The Old City offers to visitors an intricate network of narrow streets with small terraces, nice
cafés, restaurants and hotels...

BASTIDE SAINT-LOUIS & CANAL DU MIDI
4
Information
2
The king of France "Saint-Louis" authorized the inhabitants to build a new City "La Bastide" on the left bank of
the "Aude" river. The Bastide "Saint Louis" was born in 1245. During the Hundred Years’ War, the Black Prince
destroyed a great part of the Bastide due to a big fire in 1355. Later in the 17th century, the Bastide would
become a City dedicated to draperies. In the 19th century cultural life in the city became very rich thanks to the
profits from the wine trade. Nowadays, the walker will appreciate the Bastide Saint Louis with its numerous
private mansions, its churches and its spice market. Near the Bastide, the Canal du Midi built in the 17th century to
link the Atlantic and Mediterranean, is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and flows through a region steeped
in history. A boating holiday on the canal du Midi is a unique experience to find "serenity".

Fortifications de Vauban
inscrites sur la Liste du
patrimoine mondial en 2008
Your eyes simply won’t be able to take it all in...
One of Vauban’s masterpieces and on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Citadel of Besançon is considered
one of the loveliest in France. It overhangs the old town of the Franche-Comté capital, hemmed in by a river
bend, by more than 100 metres and offers visitors spectacular panoramas from its ramparts. It conceals a
historical heritage that is also lively, astonishingly varied and emotionally charged, perfect for exciting visits.
Within its fortress, discover numerous points of interest devoted to History and Memory (Espace Vauban,
Comtois Museum, Museum of the Resistance and Deportation) and, which makes it extremely unusual, to
the animal world with the different parts of the Natural History Museum: aquarium, insectarium, zoological
garden. Nowhere else in France is it possible to see such an illustration of biodiversity in one place.
NEW 2013: Programme to mark the 5th anniversary of the UNESCO listing.

FONTENAY ABBEY
10
Information
10
Founded by Saint Bernard in 1118, Fontenay Abbey is one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in France.
The Romanesque architecture gives remarkable homogeneity to the 12th century monastic buildings. Visitors
successively come to the church, dormitory, cloister, chapter-house, scriptorium, warming-house, together
with the forge, where the old hydraulic hammer was restored in 2008. Converted into a paper mill during the
French Revolution, Fontenay Abbey was purchased in 1820 by Elie de Montgolfier, a descendant of the first balloonists.
The paper mill was in operation until 1906, when Édouard Aynard, son-in-law of Raymond de Montgolfier,
purchased Fontenay. Today, the same family still continues the maintenance and conservation of the site. The
privately owned Fontenay Abbey was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1981. Less than half an
hour’s walk away, visitors can see the Saint-Bernard pool and Les Munières clearing, where the monks extracted
iron ore.

LE MANS,
THE PLANTAGENÊT CITY
Information
11
For 17 centuries, the Roman wall has enclosed the centre of Le Mans, the Plantagenet City, so-called after the
powerful Plantagenet family from Le Mans who reigned over England in the Middle Ages.
Streets and narrow passages lined with Renaissance mansions and half-timbered houses painted in bright
colours rise to the assault of Saint-Julian cathedral. The cathedral holds numerous treasures including, with
Chartres, the most outstanding set of mediaeval stained glass windows.
Its heritage, developed and invigorated, has earned Le Mans the designation "Ville d’art et d’histoire" (City of
Art & History).
On summer evenings, La Nuit des Chimères offers a journey through the imaginary and the fantastic.
Performances are staged by Skertzò at seven sites (shows with images, sound and light effects).
This unusual setting hosts high quality events throughout the year, like the plants and garden design festival,
"Entre Cours et Jardins" (last weekend in october). It is also a popular location for numerous film shoots in natural
settings (Cyrano de Bergerac, On Guard, The Iron Mask, etc.).

NORMANDY
ABBEYS ROUTE
Information
13
More than 30 appealing and beautiful abbeys, all slightly similar yet all unique, are a reminder of how richly endowed Normandy was in the Middle Ages: Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, Jumièges Abbey, the Abbaye aux Dames and
the Abbaye aux Hommes in Caen, Bec-Hellouin Abbey are among the best known. The abbeys are lively places
that host high quality events throughout the year: exhibitions, concerts, etc.
Several of them are home to religious communities with whom it is possible to share precious moments remembering one’s roots and the important things in life. One cannot remain insensible to the evocative power of these
age-old foundations, centres of History and Faith; as visitors approach their senses are awakened to the atmosphere, feelings and aesthetics, by the shimmering colours and mixture of scents from a medicinal herb garden,
crows flying round the towers and spires, the pure sound of Gregorian chant, or simply the silence.

PALAIS GARNIER

14
The Palais Garnier, which opened in 1875, is one of the architectural gems of Paris and symbolises the transformation
of the city envisaged by Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann. Since then, it has become a world-famous temple
of opera and choreography. Today, the Palais Garnier is one of the theatres of the Paris National Opera, with the
Bastille Opera, and the only opera house in the world which you can visit unaccompanied all year round.
Information
The Palais Garnier will take you by surprise with its rich architecture and its intricately decorated interior,
both enhanced by recent restoration work. This palace of marble and gold unwinds the splendours of its grand
staircase and foyers, abundantly decorated with paintings, sculptures and mosaics. It houses the Opera Library and
Museum (National Library of France) and its permanent collections, and holds temporary themed exhibitions
two or three times a year which highlight the riches of the works and collections on the heritage of dance and
opera.

PARLEMENT OF BRITTANY
16
Information
16
The symbol and backdrop to the episodes that have marked the history of Brittany, the Parlement building is also
a remarkable example of 17th century grand royal and Parisian decorative style.
Constructed between 1618 and 1655, the seat of the sovereign court of justice, responsible for recording edicts
and royal letters, expresses the prestige of its function in its walls. The Great Chamber, a magnificent gem of
interior decoration, with coffered ceilings and carved and gilded panelling, offers a unique example of the
pictorial style of this period.
After a century of construction, Louis XV’s architect, Jacques V Gabriel, endowed the palace with a royal square,
giving it rhythm by alternating granite and tufa – a setting for the statue of the Sun King. With the Revolution,
the parliament lost its political aspect but retained its role as a court of justice. The fire of 1994 traumatised the
Bretons, fortunately put right by an exemplary restoration and the re-opening of the building as a court of appeal
and historic building open to the public.

CHÂTEAU
DE VERSAILLES

Information

A World Heritage site for 30 years, the château of Versailles is one of the finest achievements of 17th century
French art and architecture.
Louis XIII’s former hunting lodge, transformed by his son Louis XIV, became the seat of the French Court and
government in 1682. Until the French Revolution, his successors improved the château in their turn. The garden,
designed by Le Nôtre, is still the model formal French garden – the ‘bosquets’ provide real rooms of greenery and
the many long perspective views seem to stretch to infinity.
In the park, there are two châteaux to visit: the Grand Trianon, constructed in 1670, and the Petit Trianon with its
grounds, given in 1774 by Louis XVI to Marie-Antoinette, the only queen to have imposed her personal taste at
Versailles. Since their restoration in 2008, the Trianon châteaux and Marie-Antoinette’s estate have recovered
their cohesion and now reveal the private life of the queen who lived a simple, country life within these walls.

It was at the Château du Clos Lucé, on the invitation of King Francis Ist, that Leonardo da Vinci lived the last three
years of his life. He brought with him three of his major works: "the Monna Lisa", "Saint John the Baptist" and
"the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne".
Leonard da Vinci devoted his time to perfect his inventions. Prolific and inspired, he worked as an engineer,
architect and even entertainments director, organizing sumptuous festivities for the Court.
In his residence, just 300 meters from the Château Royal, he drew up plans for a model château for Francis Ist in
Romorantin and designed the double helix staircase in Chambord. Surrounded by numerous artists, he inspired
thought and fashion.
A visit to the château and park allows visitors to share the private world of the Master and to discover the modernity
of his inventions.

DU HAUT-KŒNIGSBOURG
26
Information
27
For more than 850 years the distinctive silhouette of Haut-Koenigsbourg castle has marked the Alsatian
countryside. Visible from afar, the imposing fortress nestling in the heart of the Vosges forest, overlooks the
winding wine route at its foot. To enter the main gate of Haut-Koenigsbourg is to walk into the mediaeval world.
It has it all - towers, bastions, keep, portcullis and a drawbridge.
The mediaeval garden presents different aspects of 15th century garden practice: planting in squares, kitchen
garden, medicinal herb garden, etc.
Restored in the early 20th century, this magnificent stone sentinel offers a remarkable view of the nature of a 15th
century castle.

of Nantes. This granite and white tufa giant is the last château on the banks of the Loire before the sea. With
its remarkable buildings from the 15th and 18th centuries, this Breton monument leads you on a truly magical
journey into the heart of history. Thanks to its large-scale restoration, the entire monument is open to visitors.
The courtyard, the complete circuit of the ramparts, the moat gardens and the night-time illuminations all make

CHÂTEAU ROYAL
DE BLOIS
30
A panorama of the art and history of the Loire châteaux, the Château Royal de Blois is an ideal introduction to
the region.
Around the courtyard, dominated by the majestic Francis I staircase, there is a real anthology of French architecture, from Gothic and Renaissance styles to Classicism. The residence of 7 kings and 9 queens of France, the
Château Royal de Blois is a place that evokes the power and everyday life of the Court during the Renaissance, as
is borne witness by the royal apartments, furnished and adorned with magnificent multi-colour decor.
In 1845 it was the first historic residence to be restored and served as a model for the restoration of several other
châteaux.
A "Musée de France" that is home to more than 35,000 works, the Château Royal de Blois displays part of its
collection in the apartments, in the Musée des Beaux-arts, and part during several temporary exhibitions.

DE BEAUREGARD

35
Only 20 minutes from Chambord - less than 2 hours from Paris... Beauregard is the new hidden treasure of
the Loire Valley.
Former hunting lodge of Chambord, built under Francis I’s orders, it has always been known for its famous
"Gallery of Portraits". Monumental work of 327 portraits of illustrious people. The chateau of Beauregard, it is also
its authentic 15th century kitchen and a collection of stylish furniture that complete this elegant house of great lords.
"The Loire is the Garden of France!" To go even further, a contemporary conceptualization of the landscaped park of
40 acres was begun in the 1980s.
Its garden called "Garden of Portraits" is the main marvel of the park redesigned by the famous Gilles Clément, creator
of the gardens of the Quai Branly Museum in Paris. It comes to light entirely once we cross it with its twelve chambers
of hedges of twelve different colors representing the reigns of the kingdoms mentioned in the Gallery of the chateau.
To delight young and older children, numerous activities are proposed (treasure hunts, dressed up visits, bike tours).
Inhabited by the same family since 1926, Beauregard is the unmissable step for lovers of the Loire Valley.

ESPACE DALÍ
Information
45
L’Espace Dalí, in the heart of Montmartre, presents the only permanent exhibition in France devoted entirely to
the master of Surrealism and particularly to his sculptures and prints. Journey to a phantasmagorical world and
see more than 300 works made by Salvador Dalí, one of the major artists of the 20th century.
This superb collection of sculptures highlights three-dimensional pieces of some of the most famous surrealist
images of Dalí’s work. They represent a significant aspect of his creative output, providing a coherent overview
of his interest in form.
Dalí also illustrated the main themes of mythology, histoy and religion. Through this considerable body of work
he expressed his own view of universal poetic and literary themes.

INSTITUT
DU MONDE ARABE
46
Information
46
The result of a partnership between France and Arab countries, the founding charter of the Arab World Institute
(IMA) was signed in 1980. The building opened its doors in 1987. Recognised as being of public interest under
French law, the IMA aims to develop knowledge of the Arab world and promote its culture and civilisation to
French and European audiences.
Created by a group of architects (Nouvel, Lezenes, Soria and Architecture Studio), the IMA building is a metaphorical
synthesis of the architectural designs of the East and West, and a bridge between tradition and modernity.
Beyond the modernist appearance of the glass and aluminium building, there are a number of architectural
elements characteristic of eastern tradition — mushrabiya on the south façade, an inner courtyard, a ziggurat
made from a tower of books — reinterpreted in new ways.

LES MACHINES DE L’ÎLE
47
"Some strange machines came to populate the Isle of Nantes. After the Great Elephant, this is now the turn
of a Manta Ray, a Sea Snake and of all kinds of incredible boats to take possession of the banks of the Loire
River. These uncommon machines were born from the hands of the constructors of the company La Machine
and came to life in between those of Les Machines de l’île, in the public eye. Their backwards and forwards
between the building workshop and the Gallery give impetus to the movement at the heart of the former
Dubigeon warehouses. They convey a mysterious reality to this island just like the time when vessels were
launched there for all the trips of the world."
In the industrial warehouses of the former shipyards emblematic of the industrial and port heritage of the city,
several extraordinary Machines are being built. "Les Machines de l’île", imagined by François Delarozière and
Pierre Orefice, is an unprecedented artistic project.
You can discover the Gallery of the Machines, dedicated to the plant world, and see the flight of the Heron over
the model of the Heron Tree; dive into the Marine Worlds Carousel, an incredible structure over three levels
devoted to the sea; or even travel on the Great Elephant.

Discover the whole Story at the Mémorial de Caen Museum
The extraordinary success of the "Mémorial de Caen" lies in the initial resolve of its founder, Mr. Jean-Marie
Girault. With destruction wreaked across almost three quarters of this martyr city of the Liberation in the summer
of 1944, Caen deserved a fitting tribute for the damage it suffered.
And such a tribute was paid, but with the focus on what continues to be the Mémorial’s running theme:
reconciliation.

MUSÉE D’ORSAY

The Musée d’Orsay is one of the most famous museums in the world.
This success, never refuted, is due not only to its exceptional collections of works made mainly between 1848

glazed roof provides unparalleled natural light, an ideal place to show the collections. The most famous artists
are all found here: Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, as well as Millet, Courbet, Puvis de Chavannes and

Through almost 4,000 works of every fine art genre, painting, sculpture, photography, the decorative arts and

MUSÉE FABRE
DE MONTPELLIER AGGLOMÉRATION

The Musée Fabre, an art museum, offers visitors a major collection of paintings from the 15th to 21st century
and a fine collection of sculptures. Veronese, Poussin, Steen, Ingres, Delacroix, Courbet, Bazille and Pierre
Soulages and the sculptors Houdon, Pajou and Richier are particularly well represented.
The Fabre museum regularly organizes major world-class exhibitions, such as "From the workshop to the painting: Italian drawing from Raphael to Tiepolo" from 16 February to 12 May 2013, presenting a panorama of
Italian graphic arts from the XVIth to XVIIIth centuries, from Raphael to Tiepolo, based on the Fabre museum’s
own rich collection. This event will be followed by a Paul Signac exhibition - "The colors of water", from 13 July
to 27 October 2013, in particular highlighting representations of the south of France by this major colorist and
neo-impressionistic painter.
Moreover, the private mansion Cabrières Sabatier d’Espeyran, from the 19th century, now hosts the brand new
Decorative Arts Department and offers the only collection, in any French decorative art museum, for discovering the lifestyle of 18th and 19th century bourgeois and aristocratic society.

MUSÉE MARMOTTAN
MONET
56
57
Located between the Jardin du Ranelagh and Bois de Boulogne, ten minutes from Trocadéro, the Musée
Marmottan Monet is a breath of fresh air in the centre of Paris.
On his death in 1932, Paul Marmottan bequeathed this building to the Académie des beaux-arts along with
all his collections, to create a museum in his name. On 21 June 1934, the Musée Marmottan opened its doors,
and over the years it has diversified its collections, with a donation from Victorine Donop de Monchy in 1957.
In 1966, the museum became a centre of Impressionism thanks to Michel Monet, who bequeathed his father
Claude Monet’s collection of paintings to the museum, now the owner of the largest collection of works by
Claude Monet in the world.
In 1996, the Denis and Annie Rouart Foundation was created within the museum, adding works by Berthe
Morisot, Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir and even Henri Rouart.
Information
NEW 2013: Marie Laurencin (1883-1956) exhibition from 21 February to 30 June.
The Marmottan Monet museum pays a vibrant tribute to Marie Laurencin, one of the most famous female painters of the 20th century. This exhibition is in fact the first organised in a French museum to pay homage to the
creator of some of the most captivating paintings from the first half of the century.

Gateway to the future, lille3000 is continuing the dynamism created by lille2004 European Capital of Culture
by inviting visitors to discover cultures from here or elsewhere through the most contemporary of artists.
Every three years, lille3000 transforms the face of the city of Lille with events such as Bombaysers de Lille
(2006), Europe XXL (2009) and most recently, FANTASTIC (2012), during which Lille is metamorphosed into
an unusual and marvellous destination with more than 500 events. Each festival brings more than one million
visitors to the city.
Over several months, Lille buzzes with shows, artistic installations, exhibitions and parades.
Every year, lille3000 organises internationally renowned exhibitions. The best of contemporary creation fills
unusual locations like the Tripostal, former mail sorting centre and the Gare Saint Sauveur, previously a goods
station.
