The coaches named Northwood University rookie Julia Goncalves the conference’s “Freshman of the Year,” while Zane Colestock, head coach of the Timberwolves’ women’s tennis team, was tabbed the “Coach of the Year.” A two-time first-team All-GLIAC honoree, Deridzard went 10-0 overall in singles and 14-2 in doubles this season to lead Northwood to its second straight GLIAC Championship. Deridzard did not drop a set in at the No. 3 singles position and teamed with Goncalves to go 10-0 in the regular season at No. 1 doubles. In the past two seasons, Deridzard has sported a combined record of 69-10 (35-1 singles, 34-9 doubles). Goncalves went 25-5 in her first season at Northwood, going 11-3 in singles and 14-2 in doubles. Her record included an 18-1 mark in GLIAC play (8-1 singles, 10-0 doubles). Goncalves also advanced to the fourth round of the ITA Regional Tournament, defeating No. 1 seed Charity Siegmund of Mercyhurst College along the way. Colestock guided Northwood to a perfect 13-0 record and its second straight GLIAC Championship this fall, earning him his second Women’s Coach of the Year award. His career record as Northwood’s women’s coach now stands at 103-32 (.844). Colestock has also won the GLIAC Men’s Coach of the Year award eight times. Joining Deridzard and Goncalves on the 2004 All-GLIAC first team are: sophomore Molly Basha of Ferris State University; junior Kristina Bogdanovic and sophomore Sue Rossano of Northwood; senior Aijana Otunchieva and sophomore Monika Malinska of Michigan Tech University; senior Natalya Natyshak of Wayne State University; and freshman Charity Siegmund of Mercyhurst. The 2004 All-GLIAC second team includes: senior Marie Cameron and junior Alison Koopsen of Grand Valley State University; freshman Celina Grondin of Lake Superior State University; sophomore Marissa Muchow and freshman Leila Salek of Ferris State; freshman Amy Palmgren of Michigan Tech; junior Natalie Paparella of Mercyhurst; senior Nikki Schwarz of Saginaw Valley State University; and junior Haleema Syed of Wayne State.
