Northwood’s Deridzard Named 2004 GLIAC
Women’s Tennis “Player of the Year”
Northwood’s Goncalves Earns “Freshman of the Year” Honors, NU’s Colestock Tabbed “Coach of the Year”
BAY CITY, Mich. -- Northwood University junior Aurelie Deridzard was named the 2004 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) women’s tennis “Player of the Year” by the league’s head coaches in all-conference
balloting.
The coaches named Northwood University rookie Julia Goncalves the conference’s “Freshman of the Year,”
while Zane Colestock, head coach of the Timberwolves’ women’s tennis team, was tabbed the “Coach of the Year.”
A two-time first-team All-GLIAC honoree, Deridzard went 10-0 overall in singles and 14-2 in doubles this
season to lead Northwood to its second straight GLIAC Championship. Deridzard did not drop a set in at the No. 3
singles position and teamed with Goncalves to go 10-0 in the regular season at No. 1 doubles. In the past two seasons,
Deridzard has sported a combined record of 69-10 (35-1 singles, 34-9 doubles).
Goncalves went 25-5 in her first season at Northwood, going 11-3 in singles and 14-2 in doubles. Her record
included an 18-1 mark in GLIAC play (8-1 singles, 10-0 doubles). Goncalves also advanced to the fourth round of the
ITA Regional Tournament, defeating No. 1 seed Charity Siegmund of Mercyhurst College along the way.
Colestock guided Northwood to a perfect 13-0 record and its second straight GLIAC Championship this fall,
earning him his second Women’s Coach of the Year award. His career record as Northwood’s women’s coach now
stands at 103-32 (.844). Colestock has also won the GLIAC Men’s Coach of the Year award eight times.
Joining Deridzard and Goncalves on the 2004 All-GLIAC first team are: sophomore Molly Basha of Ferris
State University; junior Kristina Bogdanovic and sophomore Sue Rossano of Northwood; senior Aijana
Otunchieva and sophomore Monika Malinska of Michigan Tech University; senior Natalya Natyshak of Wayne
