A VARIAÇÃO NAS INTERROGATIVAS-Q DO PORTUGUÊS BRASILEIRO Mary A. Kato (Universidade de Campinas/CNPq) USP, 2015 Plano da apresentação 1. Conceito de variação 2. Variação entre criança e adulto 3. Mudanças nas perguntas-Q do PA e PCL para o Pmoderno: mudança de ordem 5. Inovações estritamente no PB via gramaticalização 0. Variação intra- e inter-linguística 01. Variação intralingüística : objeto da Teoria da Variação (Labov 1972) • Estudo da variabilidade inerente e a heterogeneidade sistemática na fala. • Objeto de estudo é a Língua-E (externa e extensional), na nomeclatura de Chomsky (1986). • Metodologia: lingüística de corpus, métodos quantitativos sofisticados 0.2.Variação interlingüística (nova linguística comparativa): objeto do modelo de Princípios e Parâmetros (Chomsky 1981, 1986 ) • Objeto de estudo: Língua-I (interna, intensional, individual) : conhecimento de um falante maduro de uma Língua; • Metodologia: essencialmente de introspecção, mas veja Chomsky (1964:9): “ julgamentos de gramaticalidade e semelhantes são tão questionáveis quanto (...) [um]produto do sistema como um enunciado, (...) [como tal] provavelmente sujeitos a (...) erros e outras condições irrelevantes (i.e. limitações de memória, distrações e erros).” • Metodologia em diacronia: essencialmente via Língua-E • No Brasil: Tarallo e Kato (1989) e o Projeto de diacronia do PB 0.3. Variação (intra-linguística) estilística Gramática tradicional: “a colocação pertence mais ao amplo domínio da estilística do que mesmo da sintaxe”(C. Brandão, 1963: 666). (grifo meu) Labov (1972) : as variantes são necessariamente idênticas em referência e valor verdade, mas diferem em significado social e/ou estilístico. Chomsky e Lasnik (1977): uma regra é estilística quando ocorre entre a ES e a PF, não afetando a LF. Ex: Heavy-NP-shift Ex: (i)[ Uma carta que praticamente anula o compromisso] acaba de chegar. (ii)[ Uma carta] acaba de chegar [que anula o compromisso]. Kayne e Pollock (1978) Stylistic inversion não é uma regra estilítica: (i) Quand partira Jean? Saito e Fukui(1998) “Heavy-NP-Shift” não é motivado por operação de checagem e é, portanto, opcional. 1. Brazilian Portuguese, a scenario where variation is expected to occur (extraido de Kato, no prelo) .. ."....The spread of a new parameter setting through a speech community is typically manifested by categorically different usage on the part of different authors rather than by variation within the usage of individuals, although the data are sometimes not as clear as that idealization would suggest, because a writer often commands more than one form of a language.". ( Lightfoot 1991, p. 162) My claim, however, …. is that such variation can be present in the grammars of single individuals, a fact that poses problems in a parametric framework, where variation/optionallity is, in principle, precluded to occur when a grammar is selected by the individual. 1.1.Why does BP allow morphological“doublets”? “Syntactic heads, we believe, behave like morphological formatives generally in being subject to the well-known “Blocking Effect” (Aronoff 1976), which excludes morphological doublets, and more generally, it seems, any coexisting formatives that are not functionally differentiated…This exclusion, however, does not mean, either for morphology or for syntax, that languages never exhibit doublets. Rather it means that doublets are always reflections of unstable competition between mutually exclusive grammatical options.” (Kroch 1994: 181 ) 1.2. Two case studies to be considered 1.2.1. The variation between the null subject and the overt pronominal subject; 1.2.2. The optionallity of wh-movent. 1.3. EP +NSL BP is like En when subject is a pronoun,but it is different from EP when the subject is null: (3) a. O Joãoi disse ao Billk que elei/k/h estava com fome. BP=En b. O Joãoi disse ao Billk que Øiestava com fome. BP≠ EP 1.5. What is the nature of the NS in BP? Proposal: it as a logophoric pronoun, equivalent to the long distance anaphora jibun in Japanese, which can also be null. The logophoric NS (LNS) occurs , as we said, in a sub set of contexts of prototypical pro identified by inflection. (Kato 2009) 2.1.4..Hypotheses regarding the Null Subject a)core grammars, attained by parameter selection, has no doublets; b)core grammars are attained before schooling; c) if the child is the agent of syntactic changes (Lightfoot 1999), a “core grammar” should always have the innovative variant, namely the Overt Subject Pronoun; d) I-language may contain doublets if the adult has an extended periphery (Chomsky 1988) obtained through late instruction. 2.1.5. Summarizing, the child exhibits an insignificant rate of LNS when she starts school, but shows real variation/optionallity between OPS and LNS, when she ends secondary education. Considering that the LNS is learned by instruction, its place is in the periphery of the Brazilian’s literate I-language. The individuals codeswitch between the OPS learned through selection and the LNS learned through instruction. 2.1.8. Further evidence: Kato, Cyrino and Correa (2009). The same happens with 3rd person clitics in BP, which are late acquisition items, and are in variation with weak non-clitic pronouns. (4) a. Jonas – Deixa ela comigo!.... b. Wh-in-situ is derived by movement (extraído de Kato, 2013) Japanese has always been considered a wh-in-situ language. But for Miyagawa (2001) Japanese has whmovement of a short type to T/I. Languages can have long or short Wh-movement. Kato (2013) also analyzes BP as always having obligatory last resort wh-movement of a short type to the low VP-adjacent FocP, proposed in Belletti (2004). (6)’ [ForceP Q. Summary of 3 a) Inside core grammars children can exhibit variation between items that do not involve the same numeration. Core grammars do not contain “doublets”, and “doublets” consist of the same numeration. a) Variation in cleft wh-questions have to do with phonological reduction. Children seem to prefer the phonological shorter forms. b) The preferential option for the wh-in-situ would be a function of the input frequency, a thesis strongly defended in Yang (2002). 5. Aparecimento das formas inovadoras das contruçõeswh em corpus No corpus escrito do PB examinado por Kato e Mioto (2005), os autores encontraram apenas um caso da estrutura com apenas Wh-que, enquanto no corpus oral encontraram 18. (TV) Conclusões • Considerando os resultados dos projetos em que me vi envolvida, posso afirmar que , através da combinação herética de uma boa teoria (Princípios e Parâmetros) e de uma boa base de dados empíricos, descobrimos muita coisa sobre o PB, seja da modalidade falada, seja da modalidade escrita, seja sobre os fatos diacrônicos, seja sobre os fatos sincrônicos, seja no nível macro-paramétrico (translinguístico), seja no nível micro-paramétrico (interdialetal). • O trabalho que ilustrei é o tipo de pesquisa que me encanta, em que a gente levanta hipóteses fortes preditivas, mas onde a gente também encontra alguns resultados empíricos surpreendentes.
