rio minho 2 - The Whip Zone
Vilas e Cidades Próximas Melgaço, Valença do Minho. Inside the Village of Melgaço, we have to find the market, and turn right just after for a very small road between walls that will become dirt. keep going down until the parking and follow the path to the river. On the river is better to learn the banks because there are almost no references Take Out Arbo River beach (Spanish side). Drive from Melgaço direction Valença do Minho and turn right to get into Spain and cross the bridge. About 100 meters after, next to a car parking on the road, turn right to a small and steep road that leads to another parking close to the river and a grassy field. Good access to the water (and a bar on summertime). Near Village and Cites Melgaço, Valença do Minho. Distance 4.5 Km Gradient 20 meters Remotness The valley is relatively inaccessible with only few accesses. On the Spanish side, the railroad follows the river and there are a couple of footpaths leading to it. Classification Class III Description An excellent extension of the first run, that is better with a lower volume, next to the 125 cumecs. Then you are going to get loads of wonderful holes and magnificent waves to surf. After you pass under the bridge, land right to take-out on the grass field. Here you find a great place to relax after the run, with some little playspots just in front of you if you still have some power left ... If you don't feel tired at ali, then you must paddle downstream for about 500 meters to meet the famous Minho wave (Ola), wide-open and incredible smooth, perfect to surf and horizontal moves, followed by another one, steeper and breaking, just the thing to pull out some vertical stuff. The wave is on it's best when the river's f/ow is about 125 cumecs. As there is no gauge, you have to watch the river in front of the grass field: if you see ali the boulders and sand in the middle of the river, it is too low (25 cumecs). If they are ali under water, it's too high. It is normal to go down to the wave for some action and then paddle back (3 portages to make). If you are more keened on holes, paddle a little further downstream from the wave (around 300 meters) to get into a perfect hole that is used for both Portuguese and Spanish freesty/e competitions. But this playspot only works with the ecological minimum flow of 25 cumecs. Save some strength because you have to paddle about 1 km against the current to get back to the grass field ...
