From November 11th to November 20th Centro
Cultural Vila Flor will once more be the stage for
Guimarães Jazz. On its 19th edition, Guimarães
Jazz presents a continuation of the format of
previous years with performances of renowned
international jazz musicians. If in previous years
the program has been considered a luxury, in
2010 Guimarães Jazz has once again a quality
program that reflects the consistency and full
growth of this festival in the past few years.

Entre 11 e 20 de Novembro, Guimarães volta a ser palco de mais uma
edição do Guimarães Jazz. Naquela que é a sua 19ª edição,
o festival inscreve-se numa linha de continuidade do formato que
se foi consolidando nos anos anteriores, apresentando grandes nomes do
panorama internacional da música jazz. Se, nas edições anteriores,
a programação do festival tem sido considerada de luxo, em
2010 o Guimarães Jazz volta a afirmar-se pela qualidade artística do
seu programa, mas acima de tudo pela consistência e maturidade que
tem vindo a consolidar nos últimos anos.

ARTISTA MAIS SE NOTABILIZOU, REUNINDO UM CONJUNTO ALARGADO DE
INSTRUMENTISTAS RELEVANTES, DO PANORAMA ACTUAL DO JAZZ.
The opening night concert of Guimarães Jazz 2010, in and of itself, represents a moment of enormous celebration for us.
To inaugurate the festival, we are savoring the flavors and ambiance of the music of Lionel Hampton by bringing together an orchestra,
a venue which Hampton was most noted for, reuniting a broad range of prominent instrumentalists on today’s jazz scene.

¶ Sobre Lionel Hampton Nascido no início do século XX, natural de Louisville,
Kentucky (EUA), Lionel Hampton foi
um dos primeiros vibrafonistas da história do jazz. Em 1930, numa sessão de
gravações ao lado de Louis Armstrong,
pelo facto de ter tocado num vibrafone
durante uma pausa, acabou por ser integrado num dos temas gravados, nunca mais tendo largado este instrumento desde então, o qual
o viria a popularizar e a inscrever na história do jazz “The

¶ About Lionel Hampton Born at
the beginning of the 20th century in
Louisville, Kentucky (USA), Lionel
Hampton was one of the first vibraphone players in the history of jazz.
In 1930, overheard during a break in a
recording session with the legendary
Louis Armstrong, Hampton’s talent
was added to one of the songs, and he never thereafter left
the instrument which he would later popularize, becoming
“the King of the Vibes” in the history of jazz. Throughout
a career which spans nearly eight decades, Hampton has
worked with such names as Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich,
Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Stan Getz and

Quincy Jones. In the 1940s, he formed his own orchestra
which became recognized world-wide for its enormous energy and musicality, for its exuberant concerts and for the
quality of the musicians. In 1942, the orchestra recorded an
unforgettable performance of the classic “Flying Home” in
which a tenor saxophone solo by Illinois Jacquet was included; it was this revolutionary performance which opened the
way for what is commonly called rhythm & blues.

Kenny Garrett is a saxophone and flute player who has enjoyed a unique career in the universe of jazz. Starting off in clubs in his home
town of Detroit, at the age of 18 he became a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Miles Davis’ electric band, and since then
he has built up a discography of more than a dozen titles as leader and more than 200 recordings as a sideman with artists such as
McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson and Ron Carter.
O seu interesse pela cultura sul asiática reflecte-se numa boa
parte do seu trabalho, através de variações em torno do jazz
mais contemporâneo e do funk. Dos vários discos que gravou, podemos destacar a coesão e a unicidade de “Sketches
of MD”, o seu mais recente registo ao
vivo, ao lado de Paroah Sanders; “Beyond
the Wall”, de 2006 foi dedicado a McCoy
Tyner e agrega também a colaboração
de Sanders e do vibrafonista Bobby
Hutcherson; “Pursuance”, uma série
de gravações da década de 90, baseadas
na música de John Coltrane, em colaboração com Pat Metheny, Brian Blade
e Rodney Whitaker foi votado “Jazz
Album of the Year” pelos leitores da revista Down Beat. Em Janeiro deste ano
foi vencedor do Grammy para Melhor

His interest in South Asian culture is reflected in the majority of his work through the use of more contemporary
jazz and funk style variations. Of the various albums he
has recorded, we would like to highlight the cohesiveness
and melding on “Sketches of MD,” his
most recent live performance, one with
Pharoah Sanders, “Beyond the Wall,”
from 2006 which was dedicated to McCoy
Turner and which united Sanders with
vibraphone player Bobby Hutcherson,
“Pursuance,” a series of recordings from
the 1990s based on the music of John
Coltrane, featuring Pat Metheny, Brian
Blade and Rodney Whitaker and voted “Jazz Album of the Year” by readers
of Down Beat magazine. In January of
this year, Garrett received the Grammy
Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album
with “Five Peace Band – Live.” ¶ At
Guimarães Jazz Kenny Garrett presents
the quartet bearing his name in a concert which will explore jazz standards
with exciting arrangements as well as
offer some of his own original songs,
all with the rigor and musical sophistication we have come to expect. Making
up the group are Johnny Mercier on
organ and piano, Kona Khasu on the
bass, and Nathan Webb on percussion.

Saxophone Summit is a group which brings together three of the greatest living saxophone players in the jazz world today – Dave
Liebman, Joe Lovano and Ravi Coltrane – musicians representing three generations and three distinct schools, which side by side
explore the notions of contrast and diversity as a way of encountering and synthesizing each one of their languages of sound.
Criado no final da década de 90 com o intuito de reinterpretar e celebrar a herança mais recente do extenso legado do
mestre John Coltrane, a formação original deste projecto era
composta por Michael Brecker, cuja colaboração foi eternizada no álbum “Gathering of Spirits”, editado em 2004 e calorosamente recebido pela crítica. Michael Brecker faleceu em
2007, altura em que Ravi Coltrane se juntou ao grupo, participando na elaboração do segundo disco, “Seraphic Light”, de
2008, expressamente dedicado à memória deste saxofonista
precocemente desaparecido. ¶ Trio multifacetado onde a equação supera a soma das partes, os Saxophone Summit trazem
ao Guimarães Jazz uma música desinibida e livre, caracterizada pela sonoridade primordial de cada um dos seus instrumentistas, dignamente influenciada por John Coltrane. ¶ Joe
Lovano é um dos saxofonistas mais influentes da actualidade.
O seu trabalho junto de nomes como Paul Motian, Bill Frisel,
Charlie Haden, John Scofield, Elvin Jones, Dave Holland ou
Hank Jones, foi determinante na solidificação de uma forte
e distinta abordagem à improvisação, que caracteriza o seu
estilo e todo o seu percurso até à data. ¶ Ravi Coltrane é um
dos mais brilhantes e prestigiados músicos da sua geração.
Filho de John Coltrane e da pianista Alice Coltrane, conta com
uma lista interminável de colaborações com músicos intemporais, entre eles Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnnette, Rashied Ali,
Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen,
Gerry Gibbs, Graham Haynes, Steve Coleman, McCoy Tyner,
Pharoah Sanders ou Branford Marsalis. ¶ Dave Liebman é um
verdadeiro artista da renascença no panorama da música contemporânea, com uma carreira que se estende há mais de quatro

Created at the end of the 1990s in the interest of re-interpreting
and celebrating the more recent heritage within the extensive
legacy of John Coltrane, the original make-up of the group included Michael Brecker, whose collaboration was made eternal
in the album “Gathering of Spirits” released in 2004 and warmed
received by critics. Michael Brecker passed away in 2007, and Ravi
Coltrane was invited to join the group, participating in the second album, “Seraphic Light” which came out in 2008 and was
dedicated to the memory of the recently-deceased Brecker. ¶ A
multi-faceted trio where the end-product is greater than the sum
of the parts, Saxophone Summit brings to Guimarães Jazz an uninhibited and free style of music characterized by the primordial sounds of each one of the instrumentalists, themselves duly
and commendably influenced by the great John Coltrane. ¶ Joe
Lovano is one of today’s most influential saxophone players.
His past work playing beside names such as Paul Motian, Bill
Frisel, Charlie Haden, John Scofield, Elvin Jones, Dave Holland
and Hank Jones has been crucial in the creation of a strong and
distinct approach to improvisation which characterizes his style
and artistic path he has taken up to the present. ¶ Ravi Coltrane
is one of the most brilliant and prestigious musicians of his generation. Son of John Coltrane and pianist Alice Coltrane, the list
of timeless musicians he has collaborated with seems endless,
and among them are: Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnnette, Rashied
Ali, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen,

This year marks the fifth concert to be recorded of a collective which is renewed and which transforms itself each year
the festival is head. The TOAP Project/Guimarães Jazz has seen the widest range of combinations possible, with dozens of artists
who represent the most interesting and evolutionary happenings in jazz today participating.

Bernardo Moreira, Ohad Talmor, João Moreira ou Alexandre
Frazão são apenas alguns dos nomes que acreditaram neste desafio lançado pelo Guimarães Jazz à editora Tone of a
Pitch em 2005. ¶ Este ano, integram
o colectivo TOAP/Guimarães Jazz os
músicos André Fernandes, Mário
Laginha, Julian Argüelles, Nelson
Cascais e Marcos Cavaleiro, para um
concerto de puro jazz ao mais alto nível, de matriz europeia contemporânea, mais português do que nas edições
anteriores deste projecto, nas quais a

This year, the TOAP/Guimarães Jazz
Collective features the musicians

European contemporary jazz at its highest level, but a bit more Portuguese than
in previous editions of the project in
which American musicians were more

shown among the performers, the project this year will present new compositions by long-standing favorites, André
Fernandes and Nelson Cascais, and
will feature old chums Mário Laginha
and Julian Argüelles, who shared the

Fernandes is the co-founder of the
“Tone of a Pitch” record label. He was
born in 1976 and studied at the Hot

e a Orquestra Nacional do Porto. ¶ Julian Argüelles nasceu em 1966, em Birmingham (Reino Unido) e estudou no
Trinity College of Music. Colaborou com Archie Shepp, Tim
Berne, Hermeto Pascoal, Steve Swallow, John Abercrombie,
Dave Holland, Peter Erskine, Evan Parker e Carla Bley, entre outros. Durante quatro anos integrou a formação da
big band britânica Loose Tubes, com a qual gravou dois discos. Actualmente é membro da HR Big Band de Frankfurt,
da Kenny Wheeler Big Band, da Django Bates’ Delightful

The Quintet formed by young New York musicians on the rise – Samir Zarif, John Escreet, Zack Lober and Greg Ritchie – the collective
called The Story, offers a diverse jazz repertory which contemplates the more traditional currents in the genre as
much as it does minimalism and contemporary erudite music.
Este quinteto empático que se encontrou por acaso numa
jam session no Harlem, conta já com uma longa experiência
de palco, tendo realizado a sua primeira tournée em Maio de
2006, na Holanda, e continuado desde então na estrada pelos
Estados Unidos, Canadá e Europa. ¶ Definem a sua música
como a história (The Story) das suas vidas. Contadores de narrativas urbanas, em palavras musicais ora líricas ora impiedosamente reais, estes cinco músicos estreiam-se em Portugal
no Guimarães Jazz, com um repertório explosivo de jazz moderno, onde música clássica e rock progressivo se fundem
em música progressista. ¶ Lars Dietrich é um reconhecido
saxofonista de Amesterdão (Holanda).

This close-knit quintet, which met by chance during a
jam session in Harlem, is now a group with quite a bit of
stage experience, with their first tour together stepping
off in May 2006 in Holland and performances since then in
the United States, Canada and Europe. They define their
music as the story of their lives, a clear reference to their
name. Urban story-tellers expressing themselves in musical words, be they lyrical or irreverently real, these five musicians will have their premiere performance in Portugal at
Guimarães Jazz, offering an explosive repertory of modern
jazz, where classical music and progressive rock blend to
make progressive music. ¶ Lars Dietrich
is a well-known saxophone player from
Amsterdam. Once having worked with
Herbie Hancock and Joe Lovano, he has
been critically acclaimed and is the recipient of the DownBeat College Soloist
Award, given by the prestigious Down
Beat magazine. ¶ Samir Zarif was born
in Houston, Texas. He began studying
violin at the age of four and saxophone
at the age of 10. He attended the High
School for the Performing Arts and later went on to New Orleans University
where he began his professional career,
performing regularly with the Jason

Approaching the piano very much as a percussion instrument, Gonzalo Rubalcaba is the creative force behind dynamic rhythms which
reveal a highly refined knowledge of the potential of the instrument. According to Down Beat magazine, Rubalcaba is “gifted with
prodigious technical ability, with extreme depth and knowledge of jazz, rooted strongly in afro-Cuban rhythmic nuances.”
Virtuoso pianista, Gonzalo Rubalcaba repete a sua presença

Nascido em Havana (Cuba) em 1963, no seio de uma família rica em tradições musicais, Gonzalo Rubalcaba adquiriu os seus primeiros conhecimentos de música com o pai,
o pianista Guillermo Rubalcaba, e com outros músicos próximos da família, como Frank Emilio, Peruchin ou Felipe
Dulzaides. Contudo, foi através da influência dos mestres
Erroll Garner, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson e McCoy Tyner
que se aproximou do jazz. ¶ Começou a estudar piano aos

Garner, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson and McCoy Tyner that
brought Gonzalo Rubalcaba closer to jazz. ¶ He began his
study of the piano at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory at
the age of nine and received a degree in composition at the
age of 20 from Havana’s Institute of Fine Arts. At that time,
Gonzalo Rubalcaba was already playing in clubs throughout
Havana, but in 1990 he gained international notoriety appearing as a surprise guest performing with Charlie Haden
and Paul Mohan at the Havana Jazz Festival and in a memorable performance at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland.
He played with the Aragon Orchestra on tour in France and
Africa. In 1985, he formed his own group, the Grupo Proyeto,
with whom he recorded his first album at the beginning of
the 1980s; today his discography is made up of more than
20 titles. In June of 2001, he received the “SFJAZZ Leaders
Circle Laureate Award.” After eight Grammy nominations,
it was in 2002 that he was awarded two statuettes, for Best
Latin Jazz Album of the Year for his album “Supernova” and
for co-producing the album “Nocturne” with Charlie Haden.

After a week of rehearsals, the students from ESMAE – the Escola Superior for Music and the Performing Arts of the Polytechnic
Institute in Oporto will take to the stage of the Small Auditorium of the Vila Flor Cultural Centre to present their
Big Band, directed by the musicians of the group The Story - Samir Zarif, John Escreet, Zack Lober and Greg Ritchie to perform a
concert prepared exclusively for Guimarães Jazz 2010.
Desde 1998, têm vindo a ser desenvolvidos diversos projectos de big band, aproximando músicos portugueses e estrangeiros. Durante vários dias de ensaios e de aprendizagem
intensiva, conduzidos por um compositor/director criteriosamente seleccionado para o efeito, os instrumentistas
participantes são desafiados a preparar um programa musical diversificado para o interpretarem no festival. Esta experiência de partilha permitiu à organização do Guimarães
Jazz preparar diversas produções em torno deste acontecimento, testando a resposta do público e da cidade. Este trabalho, unicamente pensado na participação dos estudantes
de música cria uma série de eventos paralelos integrados
no programa das workshops que decorrem em vários pontos da cidade. As competências de produção e concretização
de projectos seminais exclusivos a este festival foram postas à prova e evoluíram ao longo de todos estes anos. Esta
prática tem sido enriquecedora para todos, sendo já indissociável da grande estrutura onde assentam todos os princípios e objectivos pedagógicos do Guimarães Jazz. Jason
Lindner, Orrin Evans, Marcus Strickland e George Colligan
foram alguns dos nomes que orientaram este projecto. Este
ano a tutoria é entregue aos nova-iorquinos The Story. Os
músicos Lars Dietrich, Samir Zarif, John Escreet, Zack
Lober e Greg Ritchie dirigem as Oficinas de Jazz em 2010 e
este trabalho culminará num concerto final com acesso livre, durante a tarde.
Various big band projects have been developed since 1998,
bringing together musicians from Portugal and around the
world. After days of intensive learning experiences and rehearsals led by a composer/director who has been scrupulously selected for the task, the young performers take up the
challenge of preparing a diverse musical program to perform
at the festival. This experience of mutual sharing has allowed
the organization of Guimarães Jazz to prepare various productions surrounding this event, thus testing the public’s and
the city’s response to it. With the motivation and participation of these young musicians as the initiative’s sole rationale, the event features a series of parallel events integrated
into the program of workshops which take place at various locations across the city. For the event, the level of production
skill and the ability to carry out important projects seen exclusively at the festival were put to the test, with the result
being that the initiative has evolved in a positive way over the
years. The event has been beneficial for all involved, becoming now an integral part of the greater structure in which all
the principles and learning objectives of Guimarães Jazz are
placed. Jason Lindner, Orrin Evans, Marcus Strickland and
George Colligan are some of the names of musicians in the
past who have given their guidance to the project. This year,
the mentors are the New Yorkers of The Story. ¶ Musicians
Lars Dietrich, Samir Zarif, John Escreet, Zack Lober and
Greg Ritchie will direct the 2010 Jazz Workshops, and their
work will culminate in a free afternoon concert.

Após o concerto da New York Composers Orchestra, a
última noite do Guimarães Jazz 2010 prolonga-se no São
Mamede – Centro de Artes e Espectáculos. À meia-noite,
no café concerto do São Mamede, o grupo The Story
protagoniza aquela que é a última jam session do festival
e, às 02h00, na sala principal, é a vez de assistirmos ao
concerto de Christian Prommer, um dos mais talentosos
produtores e Dj´s no cenário musical alemão. Christian
Prommer passou os últimos 20 anos entre o acústico e o
electrónico, tendo tocado diversos instrumentos, destacando-se a bateria. Desde sempre ligado à cena electrónica
alemã dos anos 90, este multi-instrumentalista altamente
criativo encontra-se cada vez mais empenhado na busca
de novos horizontes artísticos. Em 2007, fundou o seu
próprio grupo “Christian Prommer’s DrumLesson”, cuja
música é composta essencialmente pela re-interpretação
de clássicos da pista de dança.
After New York Composers Orchestra’s concert, the
closing night of Guimarães Jazz 2010 continues at São
Mamede - Centro de Artes e Espectáculos. At midnight,
at São Mamede’s Café Concerto, “The Story” perform
this festival’s last jam session, and at 2:00am in the
main room it’s time to listen to one of the most talented
German producers and DJ’s, Christian Prommer. For
the past 20 years, Prommer has been playing from
acoustic to electronic music using several instruments,
but mainly the drums. This extremely creative multiinstrumentalist has always felt in close connection with
the German electronic music from the 90’s and is strongly committed to searching new artistic horizons. In
2007 he started his own jazz band “Christian Prommer’s
DrumLesson”, whose music is a reinterpretation of dance
floor classics.

Ao longo dos últimos 19 anos, o Guimarães Jazz cresceu
e implantou-se no contexto vimaranense de uma forma
identitária, “delito” em parte provocado pelos músicos
que a cada ano passam por Guimarães e por instantes
proporcionados nas suas performances. Instantes
possíveis apenas com o arrebatamento, êxtase e clímax
singular e pessoal. Um concerto faz-se da sequência
destes momentos, que por todo o envolvimento da ocasião, acontecem “distantes” do olhar do espectador. Esta
exposição pretende, através de fotografias que captam
um instante particular, apresentar o encontro do intérprete com a sua musicofilia. Treze momentos retirados
das últimas três edições do Guimarães Jazz, da autoria do
fotógrafo João Peixoto. Aqui, a fotografia, nada mais que
a cópia exacta de um determinado acaso, transforma-se
na manifestação de uma musicofilia particular, a paixão
do músico pela música.
Over the last 19 years, Guimarães Jazz has grown and
become integral to the landscape of the city of Guimarães,
giving it identity, one with a bit of an edge, due to the
musicians who pass through Guimarães every year
to share with us those fleeting moments which are
their concerts. These are moments made possible in an
infusion of enthusiasm, ecstasy and the attainment
of a unique, personal moment of climax. A concert is
made up of sequences of moments, in which everyone
becomes involved in what is taking place, distant from
the viewpoint of the spectator. This exhibition intends
to bring the performer and the music-loving audience
closer together through photos which capture a very
special moment. These are 13 glimpses into the last three
editions of Guimarães Jazz, brought to us by João Peixoto.
Here, the photography, which is nothing more than an
accurate copy of a passing moment, is transformed into
the experience of an individual audience member and the
musician’s passion for the music.

Naquela que é a sua 19ª edição, o Guimarães Jazz faz uma
retrospectiva dos cartazes que divulgaram o festival desde
1992 até ao presente ano. Porque cada cartaz sintetiza e
regista na memória cada edição do Guimarães Jazz, esta
exposição é um verdadeiro percurso através da imagem,
mas também do conteúdo e dos diversos espaços que já
acolheram o festival.
In this our 19th edition, Guimarães Jazz is presenting a
retrospective of the posters we have issued for the festival
from 1992 to the present. Since each poster synthesizes
and registers the memories of each Guimarães Jazz festival year, this exhibition is a true journey through images
as well as the content and the various venues which have
hosted the festival.

OFICINAS DE JAZZ
O Café Falado, ciclo de programação regular da responsabilidade do Centro Cultural Vila Flor, tem como objectivo
estimular a criação e promover a reflexão do panorama
sócio-cultural, tendo a palavra como ponto de partida para
acções de debate sobre diversas temáticas contemporâneas.
Em Novembro, numa altura em que se realiza o Guimarães
Jazz, as sessões do Café Falado, nos dias 09 e 16, serão
dedicadas ao Jazz. Na primeira sessão, que terá lugar no
Café Concerto do CCVF, propõe-se abordar a afirmação do
Guimarães Jazz enquanto evento cultural de referência e
seu impacto na região. A segunda sessão, que será realizada no São Mamede – Centro de Artes e Espectáculos, irá
analisar a emancipação do jazz enquanto linguagem.
As oficinas de jazz são um espaço de aprendizagem e de
troca de experiências entre jovens músicos e músicos
de jazz consagrados. As oficinas de jazz, assim como
as jam sessions, são dirigidas pelos músicos residentes
que se deslocam propositadamente dos Estados Unidos
da América, fixando-se em Guimarães durante duas
semanas. Este ano, as oficinas serão orientadas pelos
membros do grupo “The Story”: Lars Dietrich e Samir
Zarif no saxofone, John Escreet no piano, Zack Lober no
contrabaixo e Greg Ritchie na bateria.

The Café Falado (the Spoken Café) is a regular programming cycle hosted by the Vila Flor Cultural Centre whose
goal is to foster creativity and promote reflection on
the socio-cultural scene by using the spoken word as a
stepping-off point for debate and discussion of a wide
range of contemporary issues. The theme for the Spoken
Café, to be held from November 9th – 16th, will be jazz, to
coincide with the holding of the Guimarães Jazz Festival.
The first session, which will take place at the CCVF
Café Concerto, will take up the issues of Guimarães Jazz
being an important cultural event with impact for the
region. The second session, which will be held at the São
Mamede – Centro de Artes e Espectáculos, will analyze the
emancipation of jazz as a language form.

Momentos espontâneos de improvisação, as jam sessions
conferem ao Guimarães Jazz uma das suas facetas
identificadoras. As jam sessions são concertos fora de
horas que se estendem pela noite dentro, cumprindo
um importante papel na informação e na divulgação ao
revelarem a informalidade do jazz e da improvisação e ao
permitir que o público menos conhecedor desta música a
possa ouvir pela primeira vez, num ambiente mais directo
e próximo dos músicos. Incentivando ao divertimento, as
jam sessions traduzem-se em momentos de improvisação
conferindo ao festival instantes únicos de festa e de ritualização colectiva. Este ano, as jam sessions no Convívio
e no Café Concerto do CCVF vão estar a cargo do quinteto
“The Story”. Durante o festival, serão ainda realizadas
jam sessions, protagonizadas pelos alunos da ESMAE,
no São Mamede - Centro de Artes e Espectáculos, e nos
restaurantes Histórico By Papaboa e The Steakhouse.
Spontaneous moments of improvisation at the jam
sessions are one of the most identifiable moments of
Guimarães Jazz. Jam sessions are informal concerts played
almost all night long. They allow the unfamiliar audiences of jazz to listen closely to live performances. These
jam sessions are usually quite entertaining and full of
improvisation and unexpected performances, which give
the festival unique moments. This year’s jam sessions at
Convívio and CCVF’s Café Concerto are with “The Story”.
During the festival there will also be some jam sessions
with the students from ESMAE at São Mamede – Centro de
Artes e Espectáculos and restaurants Histórico By Papaboa
and The Steakhouse.

Jazz workshops are an opportunity for young musicians
to watch and learn with acclaimed jazz musicians.
The jazz workshops and the jam sessions are directed
by musicians who have been invited to come from the
United States to Guimarães for two weeks. This year’s
workshops are with “The Story”: Lars Dietrich and Samir
Zarif (saxophone), John Escreet (piano), Zack Lober (bass)
and Greg Ritchie (drums).

the NYCO is an endeavor which requires the highest level of excellence
from its members, not only as instrumentalists but also as performers improvising in a variety of idioms. Its
objective is to develop a regular performance ensemble for composers who do
not want to be confined to traditional
notions of the genre or to big band typical styles and who want to write jazz
music. Since its founding, the orchestra has presented the compositions of
Lenny Pickett, Marty Ehrlich, Anthony
Braxton, Bobby Previte, Elliott Sharp,
