Mother Mine & All Of Us is a furniture collection
inspired by human anatomy. It drifts from
the will to value the reflection of my own
identity, represented in the shape of a simple
fragment, the most wounded piece of my female
architecture. Place where all human beings are
engendered and formed. The idea started from
the need to materialize a “graffiti”, a hieroglyph,
a capricious arabesque that repeatedly fills the
blank pages of my notebooks. It is the trace of my
identity, the engravement of my youthful female
body in a x-ray plate.
That sketch reveals itself in the first pieces of
the collection, restrained and elegant, occupying
the space strongly. The mimesis of my hip lives
beyond myself and creates it's own space.
The collection was built through a
multidisciplinary net of agents from different
quadrants and markets. This way the collection
is also a means of promotion for the fine work
and innovation of the producers, makers and
partners of the portuguese industry that worked
alongside Ana Fatia to achieve excellence suitable
for international markets.
Story behind the
coleection.name
The title 'Mother Mine' was inspired by my
grandmother. She passed away 3 years ago at the
age of 100. Her life was full and wonderful and
she left behind a house with plenty of memories
that corroborate all that. This coincided with the time I was starting the
final work of my masters degree.
I saw my grandmother's house and her objects
as an opportunity for personal reflection and
research.
I realized the origin of all material and cultural
knowledge she left to her grandchildren. Her
objects were like timestamps, a mark of different
decades in her life and in our education.
My shared memories in that house gave birth to
a strong idea — to create a gift that I could give
her and that would convey my appreciation for
the education she gave me. I soon discovered that
all that was a reflection of my own identity.
I decided then that this should be represented
in a collection inspired by a part of my anatomy.
The female hip, an important structure in the
bearing of life was a parallel to my grandmother,
the central structure of my family.
The title came naturally, my grandmother was a
mother of mine and of all our family.

Bypassing all thought, in constant mutation
I assumed the primal sense of my original
transcendental inspiration, both as to matter, and
thought itself, - vestiges all, or clues, present or
future; integral parts all, assuredly eloquent, and
precise, of what they might say, could they only
have tongue of their own to speak for themselves
- thus allowing us to live, recall and retain, the
secret depths we all of us possess as living beings
with us. Objects that induce, perhaps even create,
sentiments: anguish, sadness, smiles, whith a
way of bringing to life things from our deepest
imaginings and most intimate feelings - and even
perhaps, to create them out of nothing…
Emotion; Passion; Lightness, Simplicity. Were
my "guide lines" to express this reflection on
my own identity, by way of simple fragments
of myself,wooded, but vital, from my structure
as a woman, - unique enclosures wherein are
formed and bred all human beings and thought.
Eliminate; observe; and observe a new, until, the
very mode of creation itself is attained, beyond
material things, and thought itself.

('Incommode in High Heels' — a word play in
portuguese, with the words 'incommode' and
'commode', a chest of drawers or chiffonier of
a decorative type popular in the 18th century)

'MM.DoSitz's' - is an accessible stool for
everyone. Its focous is purely the act of
sitting. "Sitz" means "to sit" in German
and "Do Sitz" means "Sit Here". That why
we decided to call it "Do Sitz's" enforcing its
purpose as an inevitable action.

After Graduated in 2009 in Industrial Design
by Escola Superior de Arte e Design at Caldas
da Rainha, Ana Fatia started her professional
career as a Designer in the same year as her
formation ends with the first edition of Action for
Age promoted by ExperimentaDesign and the
Gulbenkian Program for Human Development.
Simultaneously she has worked in ModoDesign,
an Industrial Design Studio in Lisbon. Since
2008 has researched about Social Design as a
social innovative tool, in which continues to
work. From industrial products to services, from
communication to typography, she uses her
creativity to explore all areas of design.
Curiosity is the strongest point to discovery.
Mother Mine & All Of Us is her first personale
collection, a limited edition produced in
partnership with the portuguese industry,
apresented for the firt time a Salone Satellite
during Milano Design 2012.

"How to turn my life
upside down?"
How did it all start ?
My work was selected for Salone Satellite during
the Milano Design Week, which left me ecstatic
and worried at the same time. To guarantee my
presence at the event, I had to fulfill the required
payment of 1500 euros and only 3 weeks to do it.
Though I didn't had that amount available, I
though that money shouldn't be the problem but
a solution.
I then created the concept "anafatiaGO to
Milano" stating that my objective would be to
ask people for help funding the project and help
spread the word, shouting to the world the reason
behind my work concept. This came up to be
because I think creativity is an important factor
and it must be valued. I defend that imagination
shouldn't have to have limitations and shouldn't
be submissive to the existing means, because I
think the means can be created.
I needed 1000 friends, each one contributing
with 1€ in order to not be excluded from the
event. «Do you want to be my sponsor?» — the
project launched and people were shouting
«Fatia, Go! Go! Go!». The spread of the word,
that I wished so much, had started. The
campaign endured for 3 days on the main streets
of downtown Lisbon.
Four girls: me and three friends assisting me. A
logistics person and 3 photographers to register
the moment, were the other end of this perfect
venture.
We were sporting t-shirts with the saying:
«anafatia"gO" + 1€ = Salon Satellite».
Believing that this would always be possible, it
was out of the question to have any doubts about
it.The discourse was something like:
— Do you know Ana Fatia? A portuguese
designer selected to be among the 150 best
young designers in the world, at the Milano
Design Week?
I myself didn't receive cash in my hand, people
would put it in a big pink piggy bank baptized as
the 'Pink Floyd'.
Everyone could help support the cause with
more than one euro, but I always asked for
1€ only.
Each time 1€ was deposited in the piggybank, a
photo would be taken to make the new supporter
an official sponsor. Later, people could go to this
event Facebook page and press the 'like' button
on their photos.
In 3 days, we achieved our goal. First phase was
conquered.
Why did you decide to go crowdfunding and
what inspired you?
Inspiration is born from the will to believe
that people can achieve anything by sharing.
It is necessary to show the world that there are
several ways to achieve our goals. This is part of
'integrate' an 'educate'.
Believing in the power of creativity, and under
time-pressure, and didn't had no other way out. I
had to «fazer-me à vida», a portuguese expression
roughly translated as «getting it on with life»,
meaning «get it done»). So I didn't had much
choices but to prove that this method was an
effective means for self-production projects.
