Although the education of women and girls is closely tied to good health and women’s economic empowerment, women and girls in many countries do not get the educational support they need and deserve. To help reduce barriers that prevent girls from being educated and to equip women to become leaders in their community, ExxonMobil Foundation launched the Educating Women and Girls Initiative in 2 2005. Extensive research confirms that programs directed at educating women and girls can have a multiplier effect for local communities, leading to better health conditions, reducing poverty, and slowing the spread of HIV/AIDS. ExxonMobil Foundation has previously partnered with ADPP Angola in the fight against malaria. This book is a result of the collaboration between ADPP Angola and ExxonMobil Foundation. A frequência às aulas melhorou durante o projecto – as meninas ficaram mais motivadas para aprenderem e para terem um bom desempenho na escola Attendance in classes was improved during the project – the girls became more motivated to learn and to do well in school 3 9000 Meninas para um Futuro Brilhante 9000 Girls for a Brighter Future O projecto “9000 Meninas para um Futuro Brilhante” decorreu de 2008 até 2011. Elas receberam o ensino escolar básico combinado com cursos vocacionais ou The project “9000 Girls for a Brighter Future” ran from 2008 through 2011. It aimed to empower 9000 girls in school and out with the formal education system. 1500 of the girls were students at four lower secondary schools in four provinces; Cazenga, Caxito, Benguela and Huambo. The schools are run by ADPP in cooperation with Ministry of Education in Angola. They received basic school education combined with vocational courses and life skills 4 training. 7,500 out of school girls in the communities surrounding the schools were were reached with the key project messages through Girls’ Clubs and life skills lessons. In this way the project has equipped almost 9000 vulnerable girls, from the poorest social circumstances, with the skills to achieve a better and brighter future. The project was implemented by ADPP Angola with support from ExxonMobil Foundation. profissionais e formação para habilidades para a vida. O empoderatambém porque as conquistas educacio- mento das jovens meninas e mulheres é 6 The youth of today are the future of the country, and training and education of children and young people are therefore essential in the effort to create a better and brighter future. In Angola, half the population is under 18 years of age and more than half of Angolan girls aged 15-19 have given birth. Although school enrolment levels have risen in Angola in general there are still too many children and young people not attending school, particularly in rural areas – and more than half of them are girls. As a result, illiteracy in rural areas is high– many young girls can neither read nor write. Equally importantly, they don’t have the skills or the selfbelief to change their future. Education is important for everyone, but it is especially significant for girls and women. This is true not only because education is an entry point to other opportunities, but also because the educational achievements of women have a relatively greater knock-on effect for the rest of the family and across generations. Young girls who have been educated are likely to marry later, avoid teenage pregnancy and to have smaller and healthier families later on. Educated women recognize the importance of health care and know how to seek it for themselves and their children. Education helps girls and women to know their rights and to gain the confidence to claim them and in this way take responsibility for their own future. A solid basic education can also foster a spirit of entrepreneurship in young women, as they become empowered to secure their own financial future. When it comes to promoting gender equality, empowerment of young girls is important. Women’s and young girls´ empowerment is also vital for sustainable development and the realization of human rights for all - regardless of gender. The girls use ADPP’s Youth Club Manual, which covers a wide range of relevant topics. 7 “Aprendi que tanto homens como mulheres são capazes de fazer as mesmas coisas e é por isso que nós temos que estabelecer melhor igualdade no género em Angola” - Isabel Linda Sambalundo, 14 anos “I have learned that women and men alike are capable of doing the same things, and that is why we must establish better gender equality in Angola” - Isabel Linda Sambalundo, 14 years old 8 Professoras mulheres são bons modelos de comportamento para as meninas Female teachers are good role models for the girls 9 Realizações chave Key achievements •Um total de 8698 meninas, tanto a frequentar a escola como fora do sistema de ensino, tiveram acesso directo a três mensagens chave: Adquirir educação Manter-se saudável Evitar a gravidez precoce •1536 meninas completaram, com sucesso, um ano escolar no projecto e conseguiram bons resultados. 10 •A total of 8698 girls, both in and out of school, were directly reached with three key messages: Get an education Stay healthy Avoid early pregnancy •1536 girls successfully completed a full school year in the project and achieved good results. For some, completing the school year and passing the exams is well above expectations, while others aimed to top grades. •The same girls took part in vocational training for an academic year. •Some of the girls who were students in the first year of the project became life skills assistants for other girls in the final year of the project. They could tell and show how they were using what they had gained through the whole project - the education, the vocational training and life skills - to make a brighter future for themselves. •Having taken part in the project for three years, and after countless teachers meetings and capacity building sessions, the headmasters and teachers became strong advocates for a brighter future for all girls. This mindset was established in the project period and will continue to create changes long after end of the ExxonMobil Foundation funding period. •The Girls’ Clubs in the communities encouraged out of school girls to interact with the school students and participate in a range of school-organized or school based activities, including theatre, HIV campaigns, tree-planting, sport and more. One positive side effect of the project was that a number of these girls consequently enrolled in school. As part of the project, the girls followed the regular curriculum of 7th, 8th or 9th grades together with their male counterparts. The other components of the “9000 girls” project gave them a new-found confidence, which helped them in their normal studies. For example, many girls found it easier to speak out in class and to put forward and discuss their opinions. Being more active helped them learn more, which in turn encouraged them to be more active. Many of the girls also realized that they could make decisions about their future and work to make these happen, for example, they could work hard in school with the aim of continuing their studies or getting a job. 14 The girls took part in vocational training in two to three of the following courses: •Agriculture and environment course •Cooking course •Cutting and design course •Decoration course •IT course •Theatre course Common for all the vocational training courses was that they combined theory and practice, e.g. learning the importance of good nutrition and learning how to cook nutritious meals; learning the principles of design then producing a finished garment. The vocational skills courses were modular with all girls taking each course in turn. Good synergy emerged from this, for example, with the emphasis on good nutrition in the cooking courses and the work with vegetable gardens in the agriculture courses – in this way the courses mutually strengthened each other. Entrepreneurship training was also a part of the courses potentially enabling the girls to generate income from their new skills. The interest from the girls in sport was very encouraging. The sports activities had a number of benefits, apart from the obvious one of improving the girl’s physical well-being and therefore also quality of life. Sport is a very good social activity: through the sports activities the bond between the girls was strengthened and it provided a good way of involving girls from the community in the project activities. In general, the Life Skills Courses, the atAll of the girls participated in life skills lessons on topics such as: 17 “Quando estávamos no grande evento em Viana sobre o HIV / SIDA falei com mais de 10 famílias e 8 pessoas decidiram fazer o teste. Quero continuar ajudando as pessoas e quero continuar fazendo parte dessa equipa.“ - Eunice Alice Armindo Bula, 14 anos “When we were at the big event in Viana about HIV/AIDS I talked to more than 10 families and 8 people decided to go for testing. I do not know their status, but I am happy to be part of a group of people who care about other people. Girls’ Clubs were established and run in communities near the four schools with the aim of spreading the key project messages on getting an education, staying healthy and avoiding early pregnancy. In order to effectively reach out of school girls, the girls at the schools were trained as peer educators who passed on life skills messages through the Girls’ Clubs. Os alunos participam, igualmente, na gestão diária da escola. of the individual child; to enable them to become self-reliant and contribute to the development of the country. All four schools offer education to 9th grade. The pupils follow the national curriculum and in addition participate in a range of extracurricular activities including community health campaigns, tree planting activities, sporting clubs, cultural events and more. The pupils also participate in the day-to-day running of the school. The four schools aims is to provide children and young people from less fortunate parts of society with access to a good theoretical and practical education, in addition to providing a range of life skills. Furthermore the schools provide a stable and secure learning environment in which to promote the social, practical and academic development 23 ”Gostaria de discutir todos os tópicos de que falámos, também, com outros, para ouvir a sua opinião e para que eles pudessem ouvir a minha” - Florieta Loujimba, 16 anos ”I would like to discuss all the topics that we have been talking about with others as well, to hear their opinion and so they could hear mine” - Florieta Loujimba, 16 years old 24 25 The Girls As Meninas 26 Um total de 8968 meninas foram coberto pelo projecto, incluindo 1536 meninas de idades compreendidas entre os 12 e os 18 anos que completaram, pelo menos, um ano lectivo numa das quatro escolas. A total of 8968 were reached by the project, including 1536 girls aged 12 to 18 years who completed at least one full school year at one of the four schools. The girls all come from vulnerable families and poor communities near the schools. Common for all the girls is that they all have - in spite of their situation - an eagerness to learn and improve their prospects. The project has succeeded in putting the girls in a position where they have a good set of life skills, are willing and able to fight for their rights, and- for many of the participants- have achieved much improved learning outcomes. The project also succeeded in making these girls into role models for other girls in the community in similar situations. A further 7,432 community girls outside the school system were reached though the project. These girls are extremely vulnerable, and many of them are already mothers. As such, they have an acute need for life skills and support in making good choices about their future. On the following pages four girls from the program tell their stories. . I am from Luanda but now I live in Benguela with my uncle and aunt, because my mother is dead and my father is an alcoholic and therefore I could not stay at home. When my mother died it was a period with many difficulties in my life. And it was not so easy for me to continue in normal life and I was very good for me to move from Luanda to Benguela I have really liked to study at ADPP Formigas Benguela School. Before joining the program life for me was very difficult and now I think that there are some changes since I attended the Exxon program. With life skills program I learnt how to prepare my future and got to know about gender and equality, how to say no to the boyfriend pressure and I have also learned to respect a human being no matter what. I had opportunity to learn computer skills and I still want to learn the next skill cooking or cutting and Design. To be honest, I liked very much this about life skill, especially in the theme about how to say no to a boyfriend, because it is something that we as young girls need to talk about; but not always we find such a person to talk to. I think gained a lot. In the future I would like to go to university, so I can get a good job. I would like to be a teacher and teach about Portuguese Language to children. I live in Huambo with my family. My parents and seven other siblings. Both my parents are working in the local market and selling goods. Most of my siblings are very young and stay at home, but the rest is going to school. In this project I have participated in the cooking course for a week. I really like the courses, because I learned how to prepare many new meals. My favorite was fish and potatoes. I want to teach it to my family how to make it and to others also. During the courses I had to use and improve my math skills. Before I did not realize how important it is to know the measurements and to calculate properly. In the future I would like to study more, but instead of cooking I want to continue the course of informatics, I think it is important for girls also to know how to use a computer, not just for boys. When I finish my course of informatics, my plan is to teach it to my family so my parents can get a better job. My mother could work as a receptionist or could take easier other jobs, after I taught her about computers. I live in one of the most populated area of Luanda, together with my father and my mother. I have five sisters and brothers. I live in a place with a high level of criminality, small boys and girls involved in drugs, stealing, etc. Many of my friends have fallen pregnant around 14 and 15 years old. Some of them have had abortions, others have given birth and have stopped studying to take care of their babies. I had sexual intercourse when I was 14 years old. My boyfriend used a condom but I was very afraid of getting pregnant. I still have sex sometimes but I use contraceptives to avoid HIV-AIDS and pregnancy. In March I took an HIV test and I am negative, but I do not know if my boyfriend is too. I love him but I told him that I do not want to get pregnant before I am prepared for it. I decided to spend most of my time at the school. After the lesson I attend the kitchen course and sport lessons. Sometimes I spend the time studying under the big tree with my classmates. I tell my friends that they still have time to re-start studying and fight for a better future. Some of them come for the girls’ club activities. I have decided to have a different life. I want to be a doctor and help as many people as I can. I see my parents are very proud of me and they expect a lot from me. The school and the teachers have helped me to achieve my goal as they have done with other things I dreamed about. I have started playing football in the girls’ program which I have never tried before. In the kitchen course I have learnt to cook different kind of food which I do in my house. Some of my friends come to my house to learn how to cook following a recipe. I am very happy to be part of the program because I feel that I am learning a lot of different things. In the Life Skills training I have learned that women and men alike are capable of doing the same things, and that is why we must establish better gender equality in Angola. We discuss many different issues that concern us; sometimes we have been together with male peers, and sometimes in a female forum. We learn about differences and similarities between genders, as well as the physical changes that occur to our bodies during this period. It is very important, since many of us do not know what actually occurs. It is very helpful. I have also learned how to protect myself from different sort of common illnesses, as well as early pregnancy. I have learned why I must not commence early sexual activity because I am not prepared, and how to actually protect myself. Another important theme is domestic violence which we discuss a lot. It is a rather hot topic, because it happens all the time. Also we often think of the female as always being the victim, but we have also discussed that she might also be able to perform violence on her husband. My parents are very happy that I am able to participate in the program, because they can see a development in me. They are happy that the opportunity exists. Clube de Meninas na comunidade da aldeia.
